Went here to meet up with some friends for the night. They've been going here for karaoke so we figured we'd come down and give it a shot. When we walked in, we were seated right away. Our friend was there waiting for us too. Our waitress was very professional when she approached and made sure she ordered everything correctly. The food came out in a timely manner and everything was great. It was Monday and they had specials that day for Mexican food. I like how they rotate the specials, depending upon what day of the week it is. If you're in Smithville, definitely stop here for food. It's worth it and it's a great experience. On a beautiful summer Thursday evening we came in around 7. It was DEAD inside. I was shocked. I guess because Historic Smithville closes early on weekdays there's no one around. We enjoyed the quiet on the patio. On that night it was prime rib night and wing night. We took advantage of both of these specials. Prime rib was good. Big portion. Good balance of fatty to lean. Bit one note on the seasoning and sauces (horseradish, au jus). I thought the wings were just ok. A tad overcooked - it looked like the wings were cooked once, then held (or maybe not), sauce/flavor added, and then re-broiled. Good crust and HUGE wings but the double cooking process left them on the dry side. Really high quality blue cheese though. They do a pretty good french onion soup too. read more

Stopped here once before and loved their wings, so we wanted to see if they would be equally good. The didn't disappoint! It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the sunshine while eating outside. Our server Bella was delightful and suggested the Downeast Cider draft. I'm not a big cider fan, but this was light and refreshing. Hubby got a Carlsburg Pilsner, but they have a very extensive bar to accommodate all whims. Ordered the 6 wings with the Cajun dry rub. I ordered the cheesesteak eggrolls which came with an excellent cheese sauce and scallions. The smashburger tacos were cooked to perfection. Our first time and Fred & Ethel's and everything was great. The restaurant itself is nice, rustic feeling, with indoor and outdoor seating (weather permitting.) Was here to celebrate a friend's life in a backroom gathering with 20 some folks and yes the stars have risen. Service was fantastic... the food delicious... and the room for the gathering ideal This is a room in which my retirement dinner (from a prior job) was held for those same 5 star reasons! When we walked in the ambiance of the restaurant was very cool. It felt like an old tavern. It was very slow that day so we were seated right away. Our waitress was super nice and helpful. I wish I could remember her name. We shared the cheesesteak egg rolls and they were delicious. The cheese sauce was great. For our meal we shared the shrimp tacos and short rib grilled cheese. The tacos were very flavorful. I have to say I'm not a person who eats a grilled cheese sandwich very often because I think they're boring. This sandwich was not that way. It was excellent. From the short rib, the sauce and the bread the entire sandwich was great. I had a beer which came out nice and cold and very good. The food came out quick and hot. read more

My coworkers and I decided to visit Fred and Ethel's for happy hour after work one Wednesday evening. I had only ever been to Fred and Ethel's on the weekend when there's an insanely long wait, so to walk in and get seated immediately was a pleasant surprise. Our group of 4 started with drinks and appetizers, buffalo wings and the buffalo chicken wontons. My rum punch was a little on the strong side, but I know some people love it like this so I'm not complaining. I prefer my mixed drinks to taste like juice so that's my own fault. The buffalo chicken wontons were AHHHH-mazing. I'm still thinking about how perfectly crispy they were with just the right amount of spice. For entrees, I did the bacon cheeseburger tacos and the fries with gravy and beer cheese because I love disco fries and these seemed similar. The bacon cheeseburger tacos came with three stuffed tacos that were huge. I could have shared and would have if someone else wanted to share with me. The beer cheese on the fries was good and even though the cheese and gravy made the fries soggy it was nothing a little fork usage couldn't handle. Other members of my party got chicken tenders and fries and fish and chips, but the menu has sooo many unique offerings you need to visit with foodies who like to share and are willing to try a bunch of different items. Friend and I took a drive to wander around the shops in Smithville and decided to have lunch here. It's cool looking and rustic inside. Cozy too because of the fireplace. We sat at the bar and Sylvia was our server. She was attentive and friendly and recommended some menu items. I had the brisket grilled cheese... so damned good! Friends had the chicken sandwich and hers was delish too. Tap beer tastes fresh like they care and clean tap lines. Clean bathrooms. Would totally go back. This restaurant is so great, the ability to put your name on the wait list and then go walk the village is perfect. They just get in and support the local area. The atmosphere was cozy but very smithville like. The service from the person checking us in for our table to the young lady who served us where perfect. So friendly and caring and just fully engaged. My crab cake was very good and a great portion. My daughter had chicken finger and fries and loved them. My only challenges are the bartender with the Eagles hat was just rude because she had to make 4 specialty drinks when we waited at the bar for a walk around drink. My other challenge is allow people to split the check, living in Ohio now they just allow it. What a way for others to come out and not have to work at the check and splitting it. read more

The interiors have a more rustic and wooded look, with super cute Tiffany glass lamps hanging overhead. The menu consists of typical American fare, and doesn't get overly creative or offer many vegetarian options. We weren't overly hungry and wound up ordering the F & E chicken sandwich and the chicken fingers. While neither dish was overly impressive with regards to recipe/quality, they did the job of filling you up and leaving satisfied. The chicken fingers were very run of the mill and bland tasting, but the chicken sandwich was presented well and of decent quality. The fries and mashed potatoes were similarly average. The service was pretty friendly, but slow at times, especially when it came to paying the check. Overall, not a bad dining experience at all and very convenient when visiting Historic Smithville, but I'd rather explore other options in the area if we returned. read more

It's Friday night and there's live music so the place was hopping at the bar but a little too loud for conversations. We had s group of 6 so we waited for 20d to be seated. Good menu of options and service was quick. My fish tacos was ok. The fish was too dry with no flavors at all. It needed extra sauce on the side for dipping to add more taste and texture. I love the fish from the fish and chips that my daughter ordered. The fish was flavorful and not bland like most fish and chips that I've tasted. The breading was fried to a crisp and not soggy at all. It held up without breaking apart when you broke the piece in half. It also didn't taste fishy. Maybe because they just haddock instead of cod. The wait was long. That's expected in an area like this. However for the food, it is not worth it. I had the chicken Caesar wrap. Yes, although it seems romaine lettuce is not in season, it is important to get the dark green romaine in a wrap for a Caesar salad. The white part of the romaine holds moisture making this wrap extra cold and flavorless. There was not much flavor to this wrap, dressing had minimal flavor. Definitely would not get that again. Chicken fingers did not come with a dipping sauce, had to ask for that. Also the blackened chicken Caesar salad looked just thrown on a plate. Croutons were way too big. When they are that big, all you get is a mouthful of crouton. It is best to be able to incorporate a little of everything in a bite. Spouse got the Jersey Girl burger which was cooked well done when asked for medium. Other than that the burger was ok. For the wait and price, the food is not worth it. My opinion. Hoping they can change their food to match their interior. It is nice inside. Well expect the bathroom. I've heard their quesadillas and drinks are good, but when I came on a Wednesday night, I wasn't impressed. My family had seafood trio dish which was basically in garlic water, Mahi Mahi tacos (which were okay), and the clams which didn't really have flavor either. Service was extremely slow but so was the night. I'm guessing Wednesday is their "B" team and maybe the head chef has off on that night. I would come back on the weekend to see if it is any better but I'm not sure a long wait time would be worth it. This quaint restaurant is great for a nice relaxing bite to eat. I had the turkey dinner and my other half had the teriyaki salmon. The salad that came with it was fresh and crisp. The turkey dinner was disappointing. VERY small portion and it tasted like it was processed meat. At least the vegetable medley was exceptional. The salmon teriyaki was exceptional! Tender in a sweet/ spicy sauce made the dish. Unlike the turkey it was a nice size portion. Overall a mixed experience. Would come back for the salmon but order something other than turkey.
