Great little pub and restaurant in town. I'm lowkey glad the spot down by the water was closed because it led us here. Great beers on tap, cocktails galore, and plenty of food options. I stumbled onto this place at the recommendation if a friend. We went their and ordered the Big Pig. It was thw best sandwich I ever ate. And the mozzarella sticks were the bomb as well. Ill make a special trip for that sandwich and I live 2.5 hrs away. read more

It was an enchanting experience - a drive through the verdant countryside, the spectacular ferry ride across the river to Cathlamet, and then the discovery - The Spar! Right in the middle of Main Street. For years, there had only really been one restaurant in town, which was an OK place, but not much choice. This place used to be a bar, and not appropriate for kids. But when we got there today there were no more beer signs, just a charming brick face, with a real restaurant inside. (You can still get beer and drinks, but now so much more...) It was the new owner herself (only 11 days) who took good care of us. The food was decent, and we enjoyed sitting outside and taking in the small town Cathlamet atmosphere. We began to chat with her about her future plans for the place, and this is one to watch! A first-class restaurant and a delightful back-bar, the transformation will continue into a place well worth traveling to. I gave it a 4-star rating after our experience today; but if only half of what she has planned materializes, The Spar will become a genuine 5-star experience. Cathlamet is a charming small-town-America experience. And The Spar will make it well worth the trip. read more

I got the steak salad add grilled jalapeños and my friend got the French dip with Cajun fries SOOOO YUMMY!! Also the service was so good we came in on the weekend when the daughter of the woman who owns the restaurant works and she was 10/10!! My friend got the drink special which was a creamsicle for $7 and I got a beer, both perfect. My parents recommended this place and I'll now be recommending it to the next! This establishment is very cute and has a nice atmosphere. Ample seating, pool table and top tier customer service. We didn't order adult beverages, just soda & water, both were fine. We opted for some dinner. The menu offerings were plentiful and that alone shouldn't be a red flag with a properly ran kitchen. They serve breakfast & lunch all day and dinner options after 4. I ordered a burger and upgraded to a side garden salad. My burger was okay, a little saltier than I'd like. The salad wound up being replaced with cold, overcooked, over-salted fries I didn't ask for. My partner ordered fish & chips. The fish was terrible and his fries were soggy and overly salted. There was only one staff in the kitchen and he kept trekking back & forth through the bar and back to the kitchen for "supplies". I actually watched him walk by me with salad ingredients but no salad ever appeared. This restaurant could be so much better if they reduced the menu offerings to items their staff are capable of executing well. And chill on the salt. My first & last time here. read more

We stopped at the Spar Restaurant and Bar hoping to get hamburgers on our way to the Long Beach penninsula where we have a beach house. We had the best burgers and fries we've had in a long time. It's in a funky old building with a cool bar and fun lights that remind us of stars on the ceiling. Service was good. The menu has many other items we'd like to come back and try on our next trip to the coast. read more

I've been visiting Cathlamet several times a year for many decades. It's a nice little tow and a convenient stop when doing my loop ride from Portland to Oysterville to Astoria and then back home. I especially enjoy visiting the marina, taking pictures and talking to the skippers of wooden hulled vessels. For a great many years, the main drag in Cathlamet was home to a few dive bars and greasy spoon restaurants. Then the town kinda dried up and most of the businesses on the main street were boarded up. One of the few places where you could get a decent lunch was Sharons Pizza out by Hwy 4. The Spar may have been in operation during those years. if it was it went unnoticed by me. In recent years the "downtown" area has undergone a revival of sorts and one of the "new" restaurants I noticed was the Spar. The joint does look like it's been there for a great many years but perhaps it now has new owners? Stopped in for a late breakfast and it was quite good. Meals fit for a lumberjack or a ship's crewman. Generous portions, decent prices, tasty! Had an excellent traditional American b'fast including a short stack and bottomless cup of coffee for under $20 including the gratuity. VERY happy this place is operating again! They have a monster 1/2# burger with every imaginable topping and garnish, also at a decent price. May have that on my next visit. Wait staff is great. There's plenty of parking but it's not always on the main street. You can easily find a place to park in this little burb if you don't mind walking a block or two. read more

I wish the owner of this place was paying attention enough to know that the cook is absolutely cutting corners and I've never tasted more bland and poorly cooked food in a bar, in my life! Not an exaggeration. Potatoes mashed with water, no salt, no butter, served cold. Undercooked chicken served cold, waaayyy over priced, took forever. Never going back. Let me begin by stating that I am writing the following review under food comatose... I just wolfed down a rib-eye steak, a salad and a whole French fries plate, and two full cups of Avid Apple Cider from a tab. I am in heaven . My wife and I booked a night at a nearby bed and breakfast and we were told to drive to downtown and hope for the best for any decent food, our expectations were very low. As we parked in the downtown ready to embark on the Mexican restaurant across the way we noticed the Spar. Initially, it looked like a bar but as we approached the door we were greeted and invited to join the celebration of the first night opening of the new restaurant. The atmosphere was exhilarating, festive, smell of freshness and brand new construction, kinda the opposite to what you expected when you looked from the outside, very pleasant surprise. We were greeted with big smiles from all of the local people, we kind of stuck out as outsiders however, the place was an epic success. Our food was delicious and the portions were very generous. The entire staff kept on coming by and made sure we are happy with our food to the point that some of the drinks that were served to us were left out of the final bill however we made sure to remind them to add it back in . At one point Robert, Red hair Jody's husband joined our table, we of course allowed him because he was wearing the proper pendant of the SF 49ers, go Niners!, no Seahawks fans were allowed . We exchanged stories about fishing and hunting and the good old days of Joe Montana. In summary, the place is a must visit, just don't let Jody close to you as she likes to tickle her clients... After a few days of camping we needed some refreshments, and we're so glad we found this spot! As with the current inflation situation, prices seemed on the high side, but after we got our drinks and some nosh, it was totally appropriately priced for what we received. My cocktail was a great pour, not overly strong, but definitely not weak. The bartender/server Shelia was excellent! She was kind and attentive. When asked about my service dog, she did so in a polite way, while following all legalities. My fella ordered potato skins, there seemed to be nothing frozen going on there. Toppings were fresh and so abundant he didn't even finish them all! I ordered the fried pickles, probably the best freaking fried pickles I've ever had. Pickles were juicy yet super crunchy, seemed freshly breaded. Everything came out piping hot. We'll def be back! read more

Thursday evening in Cathlamet not much to choose from but ...stopped in to get a beer and something to eat with friends...wow, friendly frazzled server and a collection of pretty much terrible food. Steak bites, more like Steak Chews and Chew and Chew, fries limp, greasy, dark brown, soup not hot or delicious, salads mixture of tired lettuce and veggies, sliders no meat all bun. Looks like they have just given up serving food just to keep their liquor license. Next time will stop and the grocery store next door and heat up something in a microwave...a much better choice read more

Grease Greasy food and bad grease came in with mom and gmom for steak. order and 5 min later the waitress said they had 1 steak so me and mom change are orders I get the chicken strips and mom gets the fish and chip. 3/10 for the chicken only the breading gets it the 3 because I like the panko breading otherwise no.only ate one strip before saying enough. the fry's no just no they are the skinny natural cut ones with the skin still on.over cooked and greasy had one bite and no. could tell the grease was bad. mom and gmom had there own problems mom only ate one piece of fish before she was done and gmom steak was mediocre at best also forget her mushrooms on the steak and when they came they were swimming in bad grease. First off, I had high hopes for this place, since the town needs more restaurants and local jobs. I was greatly disappointed. The food is barely edible and over priced. And the atmosphere/staff are sketchy. The food : I've eaten there twice, hoping the first time was a fluke, but the second time was just as bad. First time I had the fish (halibut) and chips. The fish is served as two pieces, so I figured they'd be two big fillets, but they were two small balls of frozen fish covered in about an inch of breading. The fries were old and soggy. I ordered a margarita and it was watered down. Just disappointing. The second time I visited, I ordered a patty melt. The patty was not cooked fresh. Right off the bat, I could taste it was frozen and was completely dry. I agreed to pay to upgrade to Parmesan fries, and regret it. The fries were so soggy... again. I literally sifted through them all to find a crunchy one, but there was none. They were covered with a layer of Parmesan dust that just made them even more so inedible. But my dinner was not as nearly as sad as my companions'. My partner ordered a chicken sandwich, but instead of a breaded chicken breast that you'd expect, they served her frozen chicken patty, that of the consistency of McDonald's chicken sandwich. Her mom got the soup of the day which was some sort of beef and vegetable soup that was disguised behind some fancy name. But it too, was inedible and it tasted straight out of a Campbell's can. I have also heard a couple of friends mention they got food poisoning from this place. The atmosphere: Now for the vibe of the place I can attest that it's very weird. The servers are rude, untrained and unprofessional. The bartender/owner seems to be the only employee of age. She is rude and has a weird attitude. She hangs and flirts around with the male clientele and neglects proper service to the female clientele. There's no bar menu, and most of booze she recommended was cheap stuff. The place is not hygienic. It smells like a sewer in there. I thought it was a one time thing but the second time I went it smelled the same. I have seen kitchen door open with fans facing in. Not sure if it's a lack of ventilation or plumbing backing up. Either way it smells awful. I definitely don't recommend it. Save your money and buy yourself your preferred bottle of liquor, because that'll be worth 100 times more than enduring the smell, overpriced water down drinks, subpar food, and service. read more

So disappointed in this visit . I brought my friends that came in from out of town. I don't know what happened but this place has went down hill, the food was awful so greasy and totally different then before . My 10 year old could have done a better job. Service was bad my server was rude and not professional or trained well. My food should have been free. I had the prime rib and they should have thrown it away it was so raw instead of serving it to paying customers. My friends had chicken and shrimp dinner. Both of them were up all night with stomach issues that kicked in before we even got home. They felt poisoned I will never be back, Don't waste your hard earned money this place should close its doors they are gonna kill someone with food poisoning. Came in a few months ago to such a amazing meal! I had a big group with me and my whole group was in awe with the food. Something has changed and not for the good. read more
