Underwhelming Bistro Salad - I would not order it again
    Dianna M.

3 and 1/2 stars = When we first arrived I was a bit concerned - because a party left their entire meal - almost untouched! Our grandsons enjoyed the chicken strip meal and hamburger meal (with fries), Mr. Wonderful had the halibut sandwich. I ordered the Bistro Salad - it was mostly greens, some blue cheese and dried cranberries- they forgot the walnuts. Our waitress was stellar! The restaurant was extremely busy, as it was Father's Day. She was the only one of the floor, and was able to keep a nice flow going.

We haven't been here since the renovations, so it was a pleasant surprise at how nice, cozy and clean the place was. We stopped in on a lazy Wednesday afternoon and it wasn't crowded at all. The waitress was friendly and quick. She brought water and menus, and came back to take our order in timely fashion. I ordered the Turkey Bacon Swiss special with tater tots, my husband got the Patty Melt with tots. The food came quickly and was nice and hot. The sandwiches were grilled perfectly and chock full of meat! I could only eat half of my sandwich, it was filling. The tots were crisp and crunchy, but soft in the middle, as tots should be! My husband said the Patty Melt was delicious. He was pleased with the quality of the burger inside. We were both well pleased! The bathrooms were also very spacious and clean! That's always a good sign, if you ask me! There is also a nice parking area right out in front of the restaurant. Don't hesitate to swing on into the Duck Inn if you happen to be going by. It'll make your belly happy.

With Hwy 30 being closed due to landslide - we went home on Hwy 4. We stopped here for lunch around noon on a Sunday. Restaurant area was not crowded but the lounge was busy. Super clean, organized and welcoming. We picked our table and our waiter took our order fast. Drinks were brought (water & Pepsi) and our lunch order was right behind it. I selected the French Dip with coleslaw. It did not disappoint. My husband selected the Chicken Bacon Wrap w/Onion Rings. There was a $3 up charge but that was fine. He ate it all so I think it was good (and he also isn't a fan of chicken but like I said he ate it all). I did steal an onion ring - they were good as well. Overall, it's a great place to have along hwy 4 as there is already limited options on eating along this route from Longview to the coast. Stop on in....

    Pulled Pork Sandwich and Fries

After leaving here 10 minutes ago, I had to hop on a write a review right away. The Pulled Pork Sandwich was HEAVENLY. The ratio of pork and slaw was On Point. I am so happy I decided to have lunch here by myself while my husband is went to his disc golf tournament. Update: we came back for dinner. He had the chicken fried steak, and I had the ground chuck steak. To me: both we're good, but they weren't comparable to the Pulled Pork. I can just keep coming back and getting the same Pulled Pork sand which over and over and over again.

Amazing customer service and the food was delicious! I got the grilled salmon, rice pilaf and side salad. The side salad was super fresh and the salmon was cooked PERFECTLY. My husband got the fish & chips with coleslaw and he said the fish was some of the best he's ever had.

While I understand being the only person there to serve and what not, a prompt warning that the only flavor of pie was most definitely over a week old, soggy as could be, and full of undercooked, under mixed raw flour would have been human decency. To say this is the last time I will stop here is an understatement. Not to mention they charged me $16.75 for two slices on this paper plate and wrap. Thank you for ruining my 3 year olds excitement with what he described as "the saddest pie ever." Hopefully the food is better, but I won't be giving my money to these folks again. Best of luck

For a moment, I thought I had somehow took a wrong turn and had driven into rural Ireland. I was curious. I knew I had to check it out on our return drive home later in the day. Unfortunately, the hours posted to Yelp and Google were incorrect; either that, or the proprietors had closed early that Sunday night. Either way, they were gracious enough to let us poke about a bit before leaving, and I have to say, we will likely be making a special trip to revisit this place in the near future. The interior is warm, dimly lit, and filled with the heartwarming aroma of wood smoke from the black iron furnace, and Irish stew simmering in the kitchen. Lots of love and personal touches have been included in the interior decor: vintage artwork, framed and loose pictures, posters and newspaper clippings, antiques, tchotchkies, your standard neon bar signs, and hard wood furniture. It looks and feels lived in: a living history museum of the region, which apparently has more history than one would ascertain from driving through this tiny hamlet. Looking forward to knocking back a few drinks and enjoying a hearty meal here someday soon.

It's not big...less than a dozen tables inside, there is outdoor seating, and when the weather is nice I bet it's a great place to be on a warm summer evening. Right on the water, with views of the boats. Ilwaco itself is a bit of a dungy town, but this place offers some delicious dishes, and the ambience is cozy, & romantic. We were immediately seated, as we were the only ones at the restaurant on this cold, wet PNW day. We both ordered a cup of their crab bisque. Delicious. It really hit the spot, and warmed up our cold bones. What I really liked about it was it wasn't too salty! Both my husband and I added a bit of salt and that elevated the flavor, but I liked that the chef didn't over salt it, and gave me the choice of how much sodium I wanted to add. My husband wished he had ordered a bowl. It is delightful, flavorful and a decent amount of crab in it, as well. (I enjoyed it so much, I forgot to take a picture of it!!) The chef really knows his stuff and has a great flavor profile on the menu. My husband ordered the Helm Burger with tots. He gave them two thumbs up. The burger patty looked fresh homemade, as opposed to frozen bought at Costco. It was a decent size, & thick and juicy. With the addition of bacon to it, he was greatly satisfied. I ordered the Deckhand. Let me tell you, this was a delicious sandwich! The pork is tender and juicy, the sauce is sweet but not overly so. The picked added a wonderful crispy texture along with the sweetness of the caramelized onions....it was a tastebud explosion. So good. And so filling. I had to take 1/2 home and was a bit annoyed when I found my husband ate it the next day for lunch! I guess that just means I'll have to go back sooner than later to order it again. I'd like to also mention that the tater tots were perfectly fried and crispy! The waitress from friendly and attentive and the chef was sweet and so pleased with our compliments. Don't wait a moment longer. Get yourself to Ilwaco and check this gem of a place out! You won't be disappointed.

Burger served over done, cheese cold - not melted. Shrimp had some strange oily sauce that was not the advertised lemon garlic. View of the harbor is still good, but not worth $100 for a barely edible lunch. Very sad.

I've been visiting here a dozen times a year for four decades. There are a few eateries here. Many seem to come and go although there are a couple that have survived the test of time. RM38 is a newcomer... used to be in a small building with VERY limited hours. I gather their main biz was brewing craft beer for a very small clientele of businesses and the "saloon" was mostly a side hustle to help pay the rent. So I see they moved into new digs down at the marina. I won't take off any stars for the following since this seems to be their new business model: Offering uber-expensive, skimpy portions of not especially tasty food targeted to yuppies who have more money than brains. Suffice to say that you won't see many Bikers hanging out here. The good: Their patio has a nice river view and a pleasant breeze. Sitting out there enjoying a cold one on a hot Summer day is very pleasant. And during the Fall too so long as it's not raining. People complain about the lack of parking which is not an issue when you show up on a motorcycle. But there are LOTS of places to park although you may have to walk a few yards... you poor darlings. Staff is less than amazing but they are always courteous towards me. I suppose I am no more their dream customer than they are my dream hangout. But Bikers tend to be very generous tippers so they might want to keep that in mind. There's one long-established watering hole in Cathlamet but it's a dark, indoor venue. I like it there and it's more of a dive bar with very good food. The thing about Cathlamet is that if you are just an occasional visitor you have many options of where to stop for a meal and/or drink and never get bored. There's also a few good places at the other end of the ferry ride in Westport, Oregon. Hard to say how long RM38 will stay in business. I'm actually surprised that they lasted in their original location for so long considering that they were only open for a few hours during the weekend. It would be great if they quit pretending to be an upscale eatery and instead focused on providing a good value, tasty, filling meal for the money. Again, no minus stars for that but until new management comes along and makes some changes it will just be a pint or two for me and i'm on my way. Of course as always YMMV.

The drink was refreshing for the hot day but seemed small. It was cranberry juice and Squirt. The chicken was delicious. I really liked the seasoning on them and the fry was crisp. The coleslaw was bland and not really a flavor I enjoyed. Their barbecue sauce was great and complimented the chicken well. There wasn't much service as everything was self-serve. For dinner, we came back and headed up the stairs. We ordered pizza for take out. I got the Almighty and I absolutely loved it. The dough had a nice chew and the ratio of the topping was nice. I just wish there was a smidge more cheese. The view from upstairs was of the city and the waterway. I would definitely recommend coming upstairs for the pizza. The service up there was friendly and accommodating. The bathroom was also pretty with the painted walls.

But, even being a year round visitor, there are still some things that take getting used to like the limited hours for many restaurants. Even in the high season, the San Dune Pub is only open a few days a week and only during dinner hours. So, no lunch visits or late night drinking sessions. Also, no children allowed, just fur babies on the back patio. The best time to experience the San Dune is on a late summer afternoon or early evening on the back patio. It is a nice place to hang out sheltered from the traffic on Laneda and any strong wind coming off the beach. I've only ordered burgers and it hits the spot served on a brioche bun with a generous side of fries or tots. A funny quirk about the menu is that all of the cheeseburgers are the same price (currently $18). So whether you want a plain cheeseburger or the more extravagant Chipotle Bacon Chicken Burger, it is the same price. You can upgrade the side if you prefer salad or chowder. There are three large screens inside, so it is a place where you can watch a game, but there is also a wall with video poker machines that have the sound turned on, which is quite annoying. Personally, I'd turn left as you enter and stick to the quieter side of the dining space.
