Came here with family for breakfast 1.) no kids menu For me to order my sons breakfast it would of cost 12$ 2.) food took awhile. Ordered gluten free French toast with bacon and a skillet with gluten free French toast. I asked why our French toast looks different , as my son is already eating. He then says only one is gluten free. He takes it back and I can over hear him (but barely) say something about "she" this and "she" that. One can only assume he was telling cook that I didn't tell him gluten free, which I did. 3.) Frisco skillet- waaaaay too much cheese. Potatoes seemed as if boiled. It's like they ran out of potatoes and decided to use the potatoes they were going to use for potato salad. Service was pretty good. The server was nice and person seating us was cool. When seating someone though turn to make sure they know what you're doing . She went to seat us, talked to another waitress, then walked away from us. But was actually seating us. I had the chicken fried steak. The breading was very well prepared. Flavor was good and the breading was light and crispy. The only reason I didn't give more than a 3 is because of the limited selection, especially for sides. I ended up getting corn for one side and mixed vegetables for the other side. Neither of which seemed to have any type of seasoning or flavor to them. I would suggest adding a couple more sides with flavor to the menu like mac and cheese or sweet potato. It is a pretty popular place in Bellevue and I would be willing to try it again to test out another entree. If you go, be sure to ask what specials they are serving that day as they are not listed on the standard menu and change frequently read more

I just happened upon this place in an Omaha magazine and so glad I did!! What a nice place and the prices are so reasonable!! They had a great variety of choices and great specials!! I have missed the Midwest and the great pork tenderloin!! For $8.99 I got a tenderloin three times the size of the bun and substituted for incredible onion rings!! Now I can see what the fuss is about! I had lunch with my dad, and we both agreed that this could easily become a favorite spot for us. He had the hot beef sandwich, and I did a BLT with a side salad. Most restaurant side salads are pretty blah, but the Special knocked that premonition out of my head pretty quick. Bountiful spinach, radicchio, celery, cucumbers and red tomatoes made it a perfect summer salad. The BLT was tasty too. My dad said the hot beef sandwich reminded him of the diner he used to go to as a kid in his hometown in Central Nebraska. He cleaned his plate and it was a huge serving. Lunch for both of us was $15.17, now that is a deal! Looking forward to coming back to try more items from the menu! Fantastic home-cooked American food that is made fresh daily is what the promise. They deliver it too. This place is fantastic with probably the best chicken fried steak ever made served with homemade mashed potatoes, biscuit and corn. The dinner salad was good. I tried it with their house dressing which as very good. We also had the chicken club sandwich on a ciabatta roll. The sandwich came loaded with bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese and avocado. The place was quite busy for being a new restaurant but the service was good and the food was outstanding. I LOVE find family owned restaurants that deliver on their promise of fresh, homemade food. read more

I am a big fan of this place .... Been here 6 or so times and each time seems better than the last. Great burgers, great sandwiches, good specials, and yummy chicken fried steak. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, I was tempted to have breakfast last time but couldn't pass up the prime rib. Real home style cooking here. I'm always too full for dessert, but their baked goods look terrific too, so next time I think I will take a to go bag of something home. read more

My family and I went to the Special for brunch one day and you know it's very good food when you cannot find a parking spot. When we got to our table the staff was really nice, friendly, and professional. I had ordered the meat omelette and when it arrived to the table it was so big it filled the whole plate! I was so full after eating half of it lol. It was very savory and very delicious. I also want to let the people in wheelchairs know they will have no problem navigating in that small place either but in the parking lot they do have handicap parking just not van accessable size for people getting out of the van in a wheelchair. LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING! I was looking on Yelp for places to eat because I am from New England and it is my first time in Nebraska. I saw that this had good reviews and the food looked delicious. I told my parents and sister that we were going here and they had no objections. So we drove to this restaurant and it was a complete dive... but, the food was absolutely delicious. I didn't try my moms because she got salad, and what 14 year old wants salad? I got the French Dip Sandwich. 10/10 would recommend. My dad got the chicken fried steak. SO TENDER! My sister got Mac + Cheese. Super cheesy. If you're a tourist and you see this restaurant. Just go. It's great food. read more

Stopped in for a late lunch at our old favorite bbq joint Amarillos, now named The Special. We were pleasantly surprised by the great service, fantastic food, large portions, and reasonable pricing. The mashed potatoes were from fresh, not dehydrated, spuds, the gravy tasted homemade and not canned. The roast beef was trimmed so no fat or gristle. Our new favorite mom and pop cafe. read more

Went in to try The Special first time today. Have been wanting to check it out for a while. Pleasantly surprised! We were seated right away. The coffee was good not weak like some places. We didn't have long to wait for our food. I ordered the San Fran skillet with toast. It was really good, eggs over easy were perfect. Had leftovers to take home. I did not even know it was there! But other people were talking about it so we tried it. I like all kinds of foods but I want liver and onions once in awhile and I can make it great but my family not only dislikes but don't like the smell when it is cooking so I have just gone without for years. Had it there... YUMMY!!!!! it was so good! My family liked everything they picked too! Located where the former Amarillo barbecue was, mainly is a lunch spot Strength of menu is their sandwiches, and those are quite good. The Special Chicken Sandwich is huge and delicious Make sure to drizzle some of that extra ranch dressing to make it extra messy and delicious. The burgers were really great. One secret- none of their meats are frozen. The beef with barley soup was clearly home-made, and it was really great. Even the onion rings are home made. Great family restaurant. Went in on a Sunday so their menu was a Sunday special with lots of brunch choices. Portions were very good even looking at other patrons choices. They do close at 2 pm on Sundays so keep that in mind. I would choose this as a good comfort food place to eat. read more

Went to The Special for Friday dinner. We ordered the Prime Rib with loaded mashed potatoes and salad. The Prime Rib was cooked perfectly - a little pink on the inside and some fat along the edges. We enjoyed it with a cup of savory au jus and some horseradish. The loaded mashed potatoes were awesome with real bacon bits in it and a side of sour cream. I was hesitant to try this place because of the name, but decided to give it a try based on the good reviews and since good breakfast places are limited in Bellevue. I was not disappointed! The interior is still nothing spectacular but it seems a bit brighter than when the building was a BBQ joint. I have eaten here twice now and tried the very veggie omelet and the veggie potato skillet. I do not eat pork and their menu is very pork intensive so that limited my options, but i do not mind since their veggie options were actually well prepared with fresh vegetables, tasted great, and did not seem to be an afterthought dish as vegetarian dishes often are. My true love of breakfast foods is hash-browns and they did not disappoint, pancakes were also great which came with my skillet. Ton of food for the price! read more

Terrible experience! We waited an hour and 15 minutes for our food. I finally had to bring it to the restaurants attention. Our food was ready and sitting in the window so we got our food right away after I brought it to their attention, the problem was it had sat so long in the window that it was cold. Cold eggs, cold French fries, cold hamburgers. I was not happy and they did not offer to make it right they served the food and we never saw them again! Don't eat here. read more
