The only reason this is not a 5 star is because i'm modest with handing those out. Apparently this location has only been open a few weeks? They're killing it. The vibes are on point and our server, I can't remember her name, was super lovely personable and a complete joy to talk to. Ambiance wise it was a little noisy and we were still a little tight at our table even after moving it forward a bit, but those are nitpicks. This location is right next to the REI in southside, there's parking lots nearby, and this needs to be on your brunch list for Pittsburgh. They also have a downtown location, but according to the friends we came to this one with, this location is infinitely better as it's not dealing with the confines of being in a hotel lobby. Anyway, you're here for the food comments. Our party of 4 got 2 orders of the quiche of the day, a couple lattes, an iced coffee, the breakfast sando (with added bacon, for obvious reasons) with side home fries and the "I am Kazaam" (with added crab). As a quick side note on the last one: getting the bonus crab is definitely worth the mark-up because you get so many chunks of it. That friend loved his and devoured it. The quiche drew rave reviews. The soup was nice. My sando was lovely as were the home fries. My only nitpick is that it was a bit hard to hold with my hands and when I cut it, most of the egg slid over to one side, but that's probably both user error. It was a great sandwich. Got the Hen's Hash with corned beef. Notably, the corned beef was a minuscule portion given the $7 up charge. For comparison, I would have had more food in a slice of bacon than what I received in corned beef. It was also dry, stringy and overcooked. It was incredibly loud (not sure of any fix for that). Overall, the hash was pretty unremarkable. Now that's the down side. The upside is that the drinks were amazing. Creative and full of flavor. Really top notch. When my wife asked for a little almond milk for her coffee, it was a slight delay but the server came back with a fresh cup with the milk. It was so busy, I thought it a waste of time to ask but that was great service! A second trip and I must addend my review. Our server Levi went above and beyond to make us and our daughter feel special. They made her her own butternut squash purée, which she loved. Her server was very attentive and gave great recommendations. We ended up trying several dishes which were all delightful. So, I stand by my original comment, and do not recommend the quiche or the soup, however I do highly recommend the pancakes, the French toast, the chicken biscuit, and the lox. After this experience, we decided to upgrade to five stars that's how great it was. First post: The atmosphere was the one that you would expect of a breakfast place, and quite enjoyable. The staff was friendly and attentive, even though it took a while for the food to come out. The coffee was excellent and really enjoyed the pumpkin latte. My only comment or downside to it would be the tomato bisque was lukewarm, not sure if they were going for a cold soup or a hot soup? And the quiche, although flavorful and full of goodies, was a smidge overcooked on the egg. This is my parents' absolute favorite place for breakfast in Pittsburgh and having gone a few times myself it's easy to understand why. The SSW location is very easy to get to and park and the attached coffee shop elevates this restaurant to the max. I tend to make a reservation when going because I prefer to sit at a table, and the staff is always very kind and offering up recommendations and knowledgeable on their best sellers and favorites from the menu. read more

My first visit to the Southside location of The Speckled Egg was great! This is one of my favorite breakfast spots in Pittsburgh, so I was excited to hear about their expansion. I met my friend here on Small Business Saturday, and there was free street parking! There are plenty of nearby garages though since it is located in Southside Works. I love the collab they have with Commonplace Coffee. That is one of my favorite local coffee shops. We met at noon so I had already had my morning coffee, but next time I would try one of their coffee drinks. Our waitress was very sweet and attentive. We got to know her a bit and learned that she worked in Bloomfield for over 20 years. That is where my friend lives, and we all bonded over the neighborhood, lol. I browsed the menu and went with the goat omelette. This is always my favorite at the other location, and I just couldn't stray away from it. The filling had broccolini, mushrooms, and onions. I love the fresh herbs too. It was so flavorful and I really enjoyed every bite. We shared a side of pimento grits, and they were amazing too! I would order those again. I went here recently and ordered the Kazaam with rye bread, a shakshouka type dish with fresh herbs and crisp shallots. I enjoyed the richness of the sauce and the food was quite filling. The service was attentive and friendly, and the server made sure the person I was with got multiple refills on their black coffee. Food is great, business decisions are dishonest and frankly weird. My bill was $85. The suggested tips outrageously start at 20% and go to 30%. Not only is that egregious, but the percents are wrong - it showed almost $21 for a 20% tip on $85. I know you don't have to go to school to run a restaurant, but that's just basic math. What it really is, is dishonest. It's really disappointing since the food is great. They also have a weird policy where they won't seat your reservation until your whole party is there. AKA, they won't sit you and serve you a drink while you wait for the rest of your party and order more drinks... even when there's empty tables everywhere. Very questionable decisions seem to have been made but the food is good so we keep going. read more

This upscale diner/restaurant promises more than it delivers. A friend and I stopped here for a weekend brunch while waiting for her car to be serviced. I got a standard scrambled eggs & toast dish, which took much much longer than I'd have expected. Once the food arrived, it was quite good, though not extraordinary. The only other suggestion I have would be to replace the counter stools with either stools that have backs on them and/or foot rests. That said, I'd certainly return to The Speckled Egg, and I'd recommend it to others for brunch or another meal. read more

A wonderful spot in SSW for brunch, lunch, and coffee! Visited a little while ago for a late breakfast with my husband and had a very easy time finding a reservation online. The space is welcoming and bright, with lots of assorted seating options. The food is just as tasty as the downtown location, I'm happy to report - I enjoyed the biscuits and gravy with eggs, which is SO GOOD! My husband tried the Shakshuka with eggs and avocado, as well as the soup of the day (a sausage and pepper soup that was INCREDIBLE). We split the breakfast potatoes as well! As there is a partnership with Commonplace Coffee, there are two entrance doors out front. The one on the left facing the building takes you into the side with the hostess stand. I highly recommend making a reservation online (Resy) ahead of time for popular days and times. This second location is a much larger space than the downtown location. And they still find a way to pack the maximum number of diners in close together. When full, the airy, bright, and open plan space is quite loud, making it hard to hear your server or your own table companions. On our visit in September, the menu had just changed from the summer menu to the autumn menu so our server told us about the newly added menu items not shown on our paper placemat Brunch menus. Note: portion sizes are not large. The flavors are delicious. My brunch group enjoyed all our dishes. For food, we ordered the Ted Lasso (or Tasso?) omelette, Egg Nester, a cappuccino, one of the juices, and a maple sausage. Oddly enough, the non-entree items were the stars of the show. The juice was refreshing and not too sweet, and the maple sausage was outstanding. Unfortunately, for the entrees, the omelette had way too much egg (bad egg to filling ratio), but the filling was tasty. My fiancé had mixed feelings on the Egg Nester, which was a bit bland. It's also attached to the Commonplace coffee shop right next door which is a nice option if you're waiting to be seated. The food was so good! I usually don't order the french toast, but they made it very well here, and it wasn't too overtly sweet. It came with a delicious strawberry cardamom jam. The pumpkin pancakes were super yummy too - but come early because they only had one order left by 2:30pm. My only issue was that we made a reservation on Resy for 2:30pm, and right when we got seated I felt rushed to order and leave. I knew they closed at 3pm, but if you allow reservations up til 2:30pm then they shouldn't rush you to get out right when you get seated. read more

Wait staff were friendly, and were all wearing cool Halloween costumes. My breakfast classic - scrambled eggs, whole wheat toast and bacon - was good. This was an amazing place to have breakfast. I ordered the pancakes. They were so amazingly delicious! That is coming from a big time waffles guy. They even heated up the syrup. To begin, I was told to wait twice without further instructions. I inquired if I would receive a text or my name would be called because I was not informed. I sat outside and the same hostess called my name so I came inside and followed her. She turned around and told me that I was supposed to wait for another hostess. I told her that I was not warmly handed over to her so how would I know that? The next hostess seemed annoyed as she seated us. My friend and I had a 20 minute wait around 11 AM on a Sunday and were seated at the bar. I'm not exactly short but i couldn't put my feet on the foot rest at the bar so it was an uncomfortable seating arrangement. I got the I am kaazam which was good and flavorful (8/10). My family and I went to The Speckled Egg SSW for breakfast. I made a reservation the night before as I had family in town and know that this location is often busy. After arriving we were promptly seated. Our waitress came over to take our drink orders and asked us if we needed a minute. We said yes, of course. The waitress then came back a literal minute later and asked if we knew what we wanted. We asked again for a minute, and again, the waitress was back at our table about 60 seconds later. At this point she appeared impatient. I decided to just pick something and give the rest of the table a little time to decide. I chose the very first option on the breakfast menu which required you to choose a protein. I asked "Do you have sausage?" The waitress quickly replied, no eye contact, on her device "Yeah white, wheat, or sourdough?" Unsure if she had heard me I asked again "Do you have sausage?" She then stared directly at me, visibly annoyed, and said "Yeah, Im asking you about toast. White, Wheat or sourdough?" An awkward moment passed while she aggressivly stared at me. I completed my order and she then moved on to the rest of the table. When the food came, it was delivered by a kind young man and the food was perfect. I saw that the sausage was a sausage patty. Greasy food first thing in the morning upsets my stomach so I usually avoid sausage patties and opt for sausage links or something else altogether. Because of this I only had two eggs and toast for breakfast. Throughout breakfast our water was never refilled while we watched her pour water for the tables around us. After the table was cleared she asked if we needed anything else. I started to ask for the check when she interrupted me and asked someone else at the table if they wanted anything else, which they did not. No acknowledgement. I said again "I'll take the check when you have a chance." She glanced at me, gave a nod, then walked away. At this point the another person at my table stated "So rude". I still tipped 25% as everything else was very good. The food was cooked perfectly, the hosts were kind, and the young man who delivered our food was professional. I didn't want them to lose out because the waitress was short and unaccomadating to us. I understand how demanding restaurant work can be as I have also worked in that industry and other customer facing positions. It was hard for me to justify our experience as when we arrived about a third of the tables were empty and when we left about half of the tables were empty, all while being fully staffed. Love these restaurants but may think twice about coming to this location again. At the very least I hope Maura F. can exercise a little bit more patience with people just starting their day. read more
