Gateway to the North, Italian Steak Seasoning, Garamond Masala

Our favorite store in Old Town! If you need any type of spice, this is the place to go. We have been getting our spices there for almost 10 years and will gladly pay extra for the fresh and inventive spices they have. Our go-to is always Gateway to the North. This has a great mix of spice and sweetness that goes well with almost any meat or vegetable. I have recently been buying the Italian Steak Seasoning which is amazing for grilling. Great taste that doesn't overpower a well BBQ'd piece of meat. Finally, the service here is impeccable. There is always someone to assist and answer questions. Love this place!

From the moment you walk in, you are hit with the spices. Everything smells so good; sweet, spicy and savory. Walked in looking for something to kick up my french toast game. I found maple sugar. Cant wait to try it. Everyone was so nice but Jason stole my heart having such a genuine interest in my needs. He also explained some of the events the store has. I will return.

Love love love this place! Super clean and organized. Super well stocked. Smells amazing. And great bonus buy deals. If you're looking for it, they have it. If you didn't know you needed it, they have it. As a person who cooks for heart patient it is always great to find someplace that has amazing salt-free spice blends too.

ugh this store- could have spent hours. left with some saigon cinnamon (more potent/spicier than regular cinnamon), guajillo-chili powder, and ranch seasoning- because MSG makes the world go round. this place smells incredible (!) by the way, and with the best service.

I love this place. It has everything you'd ever want and their mixes are great. I am planning on doing a pepper tasting just to be able to try all the different kinds of peppers that they have! They're sure to meet all of your spice needs. And their gift options are also quite nice.

I hope this review "spices up your life!" This is one of four locations: Chicago Evanston (2) in Milwaukee AND one coming to NAVY PIER! If you do not see the sign it is because there is construction going on, but no worries-you will see the amazing window front with all of the exotic spice offerings. I came for: * Sumac to make a Turkish Shepherd Salad *Za'atar-which is considered "Arabic Thyme" to make a yogurt dip It was quite overwhelming with so many offerings, I felt distracted and wish that I had taken "more time" to "explore." Some interesting finds were: Peri-Peri Spice Himalayan Salt Pink Peppercorns Sweet Curry Hot Curry Morroccan Star Anise Sichuan Pepper Garam Masala Vietnamese Cinnamon Tumeric Vadouvan-Indian Spiced Curry Powder and many, many more! VERY COMPREHENSIVE. For FUN! I did notice that when I left the store my clothing and hair smelled like exotic spices. As Kramer on "Seinfeld" would say, "Stick a fork in me-I'm done!"

Is there the option to get custom amounts that are not pre-bottled? Bulk bin style/bring your own container?

We do not have custom/bulk-size offerings; sorry for the inconvenience. Our stores will have the same size options available on our website: www.thespicehouse.com

Do you add the Chicago deep dish pizza seasoning to the dough, sauce or just on top when done?

Do you still make BBQ, Northern Style Seasoning?

I don't know if they still have that. I'm a patron and have not purchased that item before. Hopefully you can get the info online from the company.

I was wondering if another kind of salt would work. The salesperson gave me a thorough rundown of what Indian Black Salt was and why I should not substitute anything else. She directed me to an Indian grocery store on Devon, and that's where I found the Black Salt. I was impressed by the clerk's depth of knowledge and reluctance to sell me something, anything, just to make a sale. Since then, I've returned many times for different kinds of paprika, rosemary, thyme, cinnamon, gift packs of spices, gift packs of popcorn, different kinds of barbeque sauce -- you name it. Everything I've bought has worked perfectly in my recipe. The gifts are well-received. The staff all seem to have an incredible depth of knowledge. I also appreciate that you can buy spices in amounts as small as half an ounce. Sometimes, trying a new recipe requires unusual spices. I'm willing to try such new recipes because I don't have to buy a whole seven-ounce bottle of something I may never use again. And yes, the aroma in this place is magical. Savory Spice Shop should sell room fresheners that smell like their store.

A slice of vegan cake at Whole Foods costs $5.00. Too much! I decided to bake for myself, and for that, I needed vegan ingredients. Enter Groupon. I got bars of Cacaos 71% Ultra Rich Chocolate; packages of Vegan Espresso Chocolate Wafers; two containers of Vegan Rice Milk White Chocolate; and two packages of Vegan Chocolate Chips. Everything is delicious. Everything works well in recipes. Even I was surprised how good these products are. I mean, who thought you could get White Chocolate with Rice Milk? But you can! I can't discern any difference in taste between the vegan version and the full fat version that uses dead animals as part of its ingredients. I'm also pleased to be able to patronize a small, local business. The company does offer a lot of other products, which I cannot review as I have not used them. However, the high quality of the things I have had only encourage me to try other products. The staff is really nice, too. I met one of the production people, and talked on the phone to the owner. Super sweet, both of them. They answered all my questions patiently and completely. In fact, they were so enthusiastic about the products that I got excited, too! I highly recommend eSutras, even if you don't have a Groupon! I will definitely be patronizing this business in the future.
