This place was a romantic dream. The most beautiful welcoming inn I've ever been in. We wanted a place that was 1) less than 3 hour drive from Boston 2) beautiful nature 3) tranquil vibe, away from crowds 4) next to water 5) lovely modern rooms 6) a goat barn Just kidding about 6 but patting the goats was a great surprise. The innkeeper was also from the South and I felt back home. All the staff went out of their way to give us good tips about a secluded local swimming hole, the best places, and when to hit the lobster shack Red's Eats. We had white wine on the porch at night,the staff kindly brought out the bottle in ice and two glasses. Coffee was from an amazing roaster down the street. The entrance and communal areas at Squire Tarbox Inn are spectacularly well designed and furnished which makes for an exceptional first impression. However, that only serves to highlight the extent to which the substance and a stay at the inn fails to live up to both the expectation and the price. We stayed for four nights in total in room 9 (accessible from the outside on the end of the main building) so we got to see a fair amount of the inn and tried to make the most of the experience. Here's what we concluded. The breakfasts are utterly underwhelming and generic. There was zero evidence of any local ingredients being used, basic grocery store artificially flavored and sweetened yogurt, usually a sickly sweet baked item (almost certainly from prepared mixes) and a hot item. The hot item ranged from a tiny slice of omelette to a sweet and dry store bought croissant with some jimmy deans breakfast sausage. We're definitely not above a basic motel breakfast but we paid for something nice and most definitely didn't get it. The presence of several Sysco branded products left us feeling like most things were just ordered, trucked in and hurriedly reheated rather than anything actually being "cooked". That's doubly disappointing given they have their own (sadly very neglected) market garden, plus some chickens and goats. Would it have been that hard to do some freshly prepared eggs from the chickens that are literally steps away from the kitchen. The room was small which isn't necessarily a problem but the bathroom was incredibly cramped for me (I'm 6'2") such that I had to stoop to use the shower and couldn't raise my arms to towel off. The room had an old window mounted ac unit that kept it cool but was definitely noisy, but that was probably a saving grace as it drowned out the sound of the mice chewing under the floor boards. The sound proofing is also non existent. We live in an old 1800s house so know that some rodent activity and noise comes with the territory but this was just too unrefined and rustic for the price point. This was compounded by our experience when fetching tea one evening from the self service snack and drinks bar to see a mouse scurry across the floor and under the door into the kitchen. Needless to say we opted out of the breakfast on our final day. Next, the wifi was very temperamental. That wasn't a problem as that's hardly the reason most people come to Maine, but if you need reliable wifi, don't bank on it here. Finally, the location is nice but 20mins drive from the nearest town of Wiscasset, and about 30-40 mins from Damariscotta. That meant the Inn was pretty cut off from any restaurants. If they offered dinner to guests even on some nights then that would have made the seclusion an asset. Instead it became a bit of a chore. So overall, the Squire Tarbox Inn promises much but fails to deliver on the substance that makes for a really great stay at this price point. It looks great in photos and I'm sure would Instagram well, but get up close and the reality is different. A bit of research suggests the new owners are designers from Houston and possibly don't live on site and that's what it feels like. Well designed and visually pleasing but with a really disappointing lack of attention to detail and lacking an innkeeper focused on the small things that add up to a great experience. We'd have considered it good value at about half what we paid. As it was, we left ruing the missed opportunities and the several hundred dollars we felt we'd overpaid. read more

What an incredible place! It's clear that it's been renovated with every thought to creature comforts as well as design. The bedding was perfect, the furniture gorgeous AND comfy cozy, the decor a perfect marriage of modern and antique. The "quick breakfasts" turned out to be a French toast apple bake with bacon one morning and cheesy eggs on toast with coffee cake the next morning. Coffee and tea available all the time, as well as for purchase wine, beer and snacks. Wine/cocktail/water glasses and carafes were a great touch. No plastic waste in the rooms - hand soap and shower toiletries were in refillable glass pump bottles. And everything was absolutely spotless. The land is gorg - we took a walk after breakfast through the woods, down to the water and saw 4! bald eagles. Truly can't say enough good things about the Tarbox!! read more

My boyfriend and I recently stayed at Squire Tarbox Inn for a weekend staycation. We were eager to get out of our normal city grind and get off-the-grid. Once we arrived, we did not want to leave. We were greeted with a friendly "Howdy Folks" from their new innkeeper along with a friendly face and local's guide to Westport and the midcoast Maine area. The inn is an aesthetic dream and every corner is "instagrammable." The beds are so comfortable with beautiful, soft linens. We enjoyed a farm breakfast with eggs from the STI hens, local yogurt with goat cheese and blueberries, while we enjoyed our coffee in the sun filled living room. We explored the property and walked the trail down to the water. We spent some therapeutic time in the barn with the chickens and goats. At night we enjoyed snacks, wine and some classical music. A perfect way to end our stay. We can hardly wait to book our next getaway at the Squire Tarbox Inn. read more

I dont like small bed and breakfast Inns. I feel uncomfortable worrying about making too much noise, or coming in too late, or if Im in somebody's way. It just doesnt feel like vacation. And so if I had realized how small the Squire Tar Box was, I probably would have looked for someplace else to stay. But they were highly recommended, and situated on a farm and located near two lobster places we really wanted to check out-- so off we headed to Wiscasset Maine. The first thing we learned is, its not located 'conveniently' in Wiscasset, its actually on Wesport Island which means a long but pleasant drive past quiet lakeside homes. About as un-tourist as you can get. So un-tourist that we were convinced we must be lost. Once we realized we were in the right place, and got over the initial shock of feeling like we were in the guest bedrooms of a strangers house, (and the shock of no television) we acclimated and fell in love with the experience. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and you can roam freely around their organic farm. Walk amongst goats, pigs and chickens being raised as livestock, wander along rows of fruits and vegetables, and stroll down a wooded path to a pristine unspoiled, uncommercialized lakefront. On your way back stop to pet the owners Burmese Mountain dog, sit in some adirondeck chairs and watch the sun set. We didnt stay for dinner, but based on the smells drifting through the house, I recommend it. The rooms are authentic, the beds are heavenly, and the common rooms are comfortable and full of things to explore. Breakfast is farm fresh and cooked to order using ingredients grown or raised on the farm. And I definately recommend a visit to their farmstand for fresh eggs, and whatever else happens to be available that day. This unique and peaceful inn undeniably changed my view on the Bed and Breakfast experience. I'd go back without hesitation. One suggestion? We were disappointed that the honor bar closed sometime before 11pm. We were terribly thirsty at around midnight and went downstairs to find everything was locked up tight. It would be great if the owners made sodas and juices available around the clock. read more

I had the most wonderful vacation of my life here and I feel so lucky that I just happened to find this place on a dog-friendly hotel listing site. This inn is secluded, quiet, unique and gorgeous. The food is amazing and the family owner/operators were very friendly and helpful, yet they also gave us plenty of privacy. The rooms are lovely and there is plenty of hot water and great water pressure in the shower. Free wifi in the parlor. Be sure to stay long enough to explore the woods around the property. There are bikes free for use and the roads are quiet and long. There aren't many cars that drive through. There is a preserve nearby with trails that lead down to the water. It is so beautiful! I really enjoyed my long runs in the morning and evening here. There is a nice six-mile loop around the island that is amazing. There is also a little boat available. Be sure to take it out in the evening--very romantic! (be sure to bring bug spray) The dog-friendly rooms are very comfortable and cozy. My dog had a great time here too, and the owners were very nice to her. The inn is a short drive away from the many interesting towns nearby. I'm hoping that I get to visit here again soon. My wife and I were visiting for a wedding and decided to stay at the Inn based on its location. We were unexpectedly BLOWN AWAY. This place is amazing. From the initial greet from Roni and her daughter Lara until the departure we had no complaints! It is great to feel welcomed and at home in a place we've never been. Great hospitality for sure. We enjoyed a nice walk through the paths on property and saw the plethora of things to see: flowers, gardens, dock on a saltmarsh pond and watched the sunset, chickens, friendly housecats & dog with all the antique charm on this 1700's property. We had a spectacular dinner on a beautiful evening out on the screened porch, this place truly showcases eating off the land. The Chef, Mario even made an appearance! Our room was comfortable and cozy and we enjoyed hearing the wake up call of the rooster. It just brings you back to how things can be without all of the technology nowadays. We enjoyed breakfast each morning and all in all just had a really great time. We wish we had more time to just stay and enjoy this charming Inn. We hands down recommend it and WILL be back in the future. read more

It's been 20 plus years since I've been here and the charm and amazing food followed through to the new owners. When's the last time you reached your destination only to be greeted by friendly chicken's as you approached the building! Needless to say the breakfast here is topnotch and just simply amazing! We stayed over Labor Day weekend and decided to eat dinner at the Inn Friday night. The dining room oozes with history and atmosphere and the food section was impressive.We opted for the 32 oz prime rib for two, and the platter that came to the table was fit for kings! I had started with their crab cake and it was loaded with crab vs all the fillers other places use. The attention to EVERY detail at the table on top of fabulous service made for a 5 star evening. Even their beverage list, especially the wines, are hand picked by the owners and there's enough variety to suite wine aficionado's taste. This Inn is only a 10 minute ride to Wiscasset, Maine and 30 to Booth Bay Harbor, through nothing but scenic roads. So please ignore the reviews that say it's too remote. If you choose Maine as your destination then remote comes with it. Not every Inn is waterfront or in a bustling town. And being remote, you got to wake up to crickets and birds chirping, roosters howling, and just the cleanest air, and best night's sleep, you've ever gotten. The lovely Inn Keeper, Elizabeth bends over backwards to take exceptional care of you. The owners will make it a point to come see you at dinner. The last morning we were there, another couple polished off the fabulous muffins Elizabeth makes from scratch. She saw my disappointment because I didn't get one, and sent us home with a freshly baked batch. My Alex and I have been enjoying them for a few days now. Not many Inns go out of their way to do special touches like this. I can't say enough about this place, other than add it to your bucket list as a must. Charming and cozy, it really felt like we were on vacation. The Inn was very secluded. Lots of wilderness, an organic farm, pigs, goats, chickens and a rowboat for our enjoyment. The food was absolutely amazing. The hostess was very accommodating and allowed us to bring our two Yorkies, who tormented the gentle, well behaved Bernese Mountain dog living at the Inn. The price was great for the middle of summer. The Inn is so off the beaten path, there are no places nearby to get a drink or food outside the Inn. I recommend bringing a bottle of red wine and some snacks that don't need to be refrigerated. Otherwise, if you have a midnight craving, you'll be out of luck. Also bring bug spray. We both enjoyed our unique stay and I hope we have the opportunity to visit again. read more

This is the perfect place for anyone who wants to retreat from the world and just relax in a stunning setting, complete with deep historical roots that ooze from every corner of the place. Yes, it's "off the beaten track," but that's what makes it special: It's not the usual touristy BandB that seem to be popping up everywhere in Maine. The rooms are very "new England" and wonderfully charming -- and spotless. I had an amazing view out to the 12 acre "back yard," which just goes on forever and ever, and my own little deck. Liz, the innkeeper, couldn't have been nicer and went out of her way to make sure my stay was exceptional. I also met the owner, Roni, who is going to retire so they are trying to sell the inn (they've run it for more than 16 years). If I had the money, I'd buy it! Breakfasts were terrific (nice to see eggs that are really yellow from real live chickens!), although the dinner was just ok. If you're looking for a real New England/Maine experience, this place is a great bet. read more

My wife and I booked our stay at the Inn at the last minute and were we surprised by the serendipity of our find. From first driving on the island to arriving at the Inn we were impressed with how unspoiled the island was compared to its neighbors. The Inn just added to the magic of our find. Roni and Mario, the owner co-proprietors we're welcoming and gracious and our accommodations likewise. The food, starting with breakfasts that included a choice of fresh yogurt, fruit, eggs cereals and the best French toast were great starts to our day's activities, only equaled by returning to sumptuous dinners prepared by chef Mario and his wonderful staff. As if all of this weren't enough of a surprise, Monday nights are pizza nights and the Inn has an outdoor forno, pizza oven, where they make the "real thing," and they were outstanding. Mario and Roni and the entire staff made for a very special holiday and a time spent at a place and time that we'll long remember. We cannot recommend it highly enough! read more

I would like to quickly point out the potential this Inn has to offer.... but my recent visit fell short based on the cost for a single overnight stay.. including full service dinner and breakfast. We stayed in a bedroom with a private bath located in the former barn just off the main house. We had dinner reservation and each enjoyed a drink before hand from their nonor-system liquor cabinet. We also shared a bottle of champagne with a couple that joined us, plus a glass of wine. Our final bill was $320 for double occupancy, one night, dinner, breakfast, beverages. The room accomodations were adequate and quaint, but nothing truly special. Dinner was decent but not truly special either. We had the chef's special of seared scallops and I know suspect from the tasted, they were frozen-at-sea scallops versus fresh dry packed scallops off the coast of New England. Seeing we stayed on the coast of Maine I expected fresh catch seafood, also surprisingly no lobster offered on the menu... were we actually in Maine? A bit of a disconnect for me I learned the chef is recognized for his worldly training and level of success in a number of acclaimed restaurants in NYC - so excited to experience incredible food. Everything was ordinary regarding food presentation and flavor. Breakfast was included in the cost of the room and it was decent. They have organic free range hens but the scrambled eggs prepared fell completely flat on flavor. The pastries were somewhat homemade and somewhat baked from frozen doughs, or thawed from frozen pastries - I'm guessing since the quality was just that. Having traveled throughout the USA and parts of Europe, I have paid similar price for overnight stays and received outstanding customer service and quallity food. The Inn charged $75 for dinner - which included a soup or salad, main entree and dessert, Originally I was excited to stay at an Inn with such an acclaimed chef/owner - sorry it didn't work for me. read more
