This cute cozy restaurant is nestled in the Fan area and it's not completely hidden but you can definitely walk past and not know what goodness you're missing. I easily made reservations online and we were seated quickly. We still had time for happy hour and ordered a glass of their house red - delicious! We started off with the lamb lollipops and after the first bite we knew we were in good hands with the chef. For our entrees, we ordered the duck breast and the seasonal monkfish dish. My duck breast was extremely tasty and cooked to perfection. My boyfriend wasn't super impressed with his monkfish dish but I think in comparison to the duck breast he was a tad disappointed. This is a great place. The staff are great, Gaelen the bartender is awesome, very knowledgeable about the food and cocktails. I love to sit at the bar and watch the chefs. The baked oysters are the best I have tasted in Richmond: the lollipop lamb chops to die for, the mussels too. This is a little jewel of a spot. In the old Zeus Gallery Cafe space, it's welcoming and intimate without feeling crowded. Have only been once, for Sunday brunch, but that experience has me ready to come back for dinner, soon. Cocktail menu is a reason to visit on its own, working the equine theme with some concoctions I can't wait to try. Food menu changes seasonally. Two things discovered at brunch: watermelon radishes are a thing. A wondrous thing, when pickled just so. Also, who wants steak and eggs, if lamb and eggs are a thing? In an unassuming location on Belmont, walking distance from VMFA (in fact, walked over once after a Friday evening event). Why this little gem doesn't get as much press I have no idea but I'm shouting from the rooftops. IT IS GREAT! The food was brilliant, the flavors bursting. I've been meaning to post a review since the first time I came here a couple years ago and every visit since has been phenomenal. Most recently, we went in December for a birthday dinner. Reservations are a must and I made ours maybe a week ahead of time. When we arrived, the party who was at the table we were going to be seated at was finishing up, and I can't explain how apologetic the staff was. We are very understanding diners, I honestly thought nothing of it, but we were given free glasses of champagne "for our trouble." Who does that?! Every staff member I've encountered on each visit has been so friendly, helpful, attentive and never makes you feel rushed. The drinks have been spot-on and very tasty! The food. Holy sh*t the food. All I can say is you need to go to taste for yourself. Their menu changes with the season and may seem limited, but it's been so hard to make a choice every time! Everything about The Stables is sheer perfection. From the moment you walk in, you can expect to be Wowed. The service is impeccable. The food is the best I've had in Richmond. The bartender, shamefully I didn't catch her name) asked if I had ever had sloe gin before and when I said no she had me sample it to make sure I would like it before proceeding to make my drink which was delightfully refreshing. The bartender was extremely personable and fun to chat with, giving me pointers on places to check out, and I seriously was like we should be friends! Once my friend arrived, we were shown to our table. By the way, we didn't have reservations and even though it was pretty packed, they accommodated us! Looking at the menu, we basically wanted to try everything. We started with the burrata and the zucchini fritters. I can't say enough about how yummy both were but especially the fritters. Really more like a pancake and just exceptionally flavorful yet creamy on the inside. The server explained they don't own a deep fryer in the kitchen which I thought was awesome! My friend ordered the special small plate which was a ginger carrot gazpacho served with lime Greek yogurt sauce. It was as fresh as a summer day and just insanely good. She also orders the app scallops which were perfectly seated. I ordered the halibut and it was just about the most mouth watering piece of fish I've ever had. We walked into this amazing cozy space for dinner and from the minute we walked in, we felt at home. The waitress was kind and attentive and we ordered cocktails off of the drink menu and found out happy hour is still going on until 7! The Belmontier is a fabulous alternative to an old fashioned! We decided to have our monthly date night here tonight and it was spectacular once again. My wife had the flounder, which was catch of the day, and she was extremely happy about it. There is still good food in there, but the service is in free fall. First the new bartender said she had been there three weeks-she had to touch her hair or face a couple times, not wash her hands, then put her fingers in the drinks she made. (Drinks that require you to use herbs, and even to put ice cubes in drinks with her fingers) Yuck we switched to wine. Second-disorganized service- A-we called three weeks ago to make a reservation and ask for a booth, they had no record of the reservation, so we had to sit at the bar. B-Couldn't time courses. My lamb app came, then 5 or ten minutes later my wife's charcuterie came. At dessert mine came, and we sat waiting, and i finally had to ask if they could bring my wife's dessert. c-Couldn't deliver food hot-Our entrees were walked over to us by one of the chefs, (yay they both came at the same time!) both were pretty close to room temp by the time we got them. Now if you've ever been, you'd realize that the bar is right on top of the kitchen, so how is it possible to not get two apps and two desserts to move less than ten feet at the same time? How can you sit so close to the kitchen you can hear things sizzle and get cold food? Zero stars for the service, gave the stars to the kitchen. We tipped hoping that the bar staff tipped the kitchen so that some of our money went to them. Apparently, the place changed hands, maybe the new owner can get his feet under him. I suppose if I wanted cold food only and drinks that didn't need to be mixed, I might go back. (Kidding, never going back). Tonight I had my birthday dinner at The Stables. We were immediately greeted by a nice gentleman (I'm assuming he's the owner) and he took a good guess at who we were because of our reservation time. We were immediately seated and LA came over to get the evening going. She was attentive, friendly, and gave us great recommendations. The entire staff was friendly as well, so really great service. Glasses of water were regularly filled and a lot of smiles even though you could tell they were busy. Reservations are highly recommended! The duck breast crostini were tasty bites and the onion jam was really nice. My brother had the ribeye which was really good (I tried a lil bit), especially with the puree. I had the scallop tagliatelle which was also good and the scallops were cooked perfectly. The only letdown was the lack of salt (hence the four stars). I had the gin lychee (which was really sweet & tasty) so I made sure to take some extra sips of water to help clear my palette after the first bite. I was really surprised by the lack of salt and ended up asking for salt (which I never do)! LA was gracious and brought it right away. Either cooking the pasta in salted water or finishing it with salt would've made all the difference. I was pleasantly surprised with a lit birthday candle in my flourless chocolate torte and thought it was a really kind gesture. It was chocolately, the raspberry (I think) sauce was a great pairing, and I loved how the edges had a nice crisp for texture. After a cocktail, a glass of whiskey, a glass of red wine, our two entrées, and dessert, our bill came to a lil over $155 before tip. So we arrived to Richmond for a day and night to explore the wonderful food scene so many have spoken about. At the hotel we were giving a long list of options. But the bar tender mentioned one place above others for a casual good meal. The Stables We arrived to small quaint shop in the museum District. We arrived a couple minds early so we sat at the bar of about 12 seats surrounding the chef and assistant chef as they hustled around cooking and dancing to the music. Our seat was now available but at this point this was the best seat in the house. The bar was full throughout the night and as were the tables. We ordered directly from the chef all the while he was cooking, giving orders and plating food left and right. He even explained the dishes and gave recommendations. We started with the Charcuterie. It was really amazing! Perfectly presented and three distinct flavored meats, For our meal, I had the sirloin which was excellent and my friend started with the lamb chops. They are amazing. And later the scallops. The scallops were prepared perfectly. This place reminded me of restaurant back years ago. When people go and laugh and leave as it closes. With the feeling "You are the only customers for the night". The entire staff was just a thrill to be around and frankly I have not seen such a close group of coworkers smiling and getting along so nicely. They truly looked like they enjoyed and felt privileged to be working and I really enjoyed there vibe. read more

I went to the Stables on 8/18/18 for a special occasion with someone. First and foremost the service at the Stables was fantastic. Our waitress was professional and even asked me if the guest of honor wanted to make a big deal of the occasion. It was a nice for her to realize not everyone wants to be the center of attention. She also was more than willing to provide me with suggestions about what to order and how it could be customized to my liking. I had the fish with the salsa on the side which was perfect (so I could control the level of spiciness). The ambiance of the restaurant I would say is intimate. It was easy to hear the conversation of the group of women sitting next to us. Although, the price point of the restaurant is on the higher side; they do think about what is on their menu. The food is presented like a fine dining restaurant and the flavor profiles well thought out. In a nutshell, good food but the real reason I would consider going back is their excellent service. read more

Excellent brunch in the space formerly occupied by Zeus Gallery Cafe! I took a friend to brunch for her birthday, she was very excited about the menu. The place has a cool vibe to it, with various tiny rooms of tables. We started with one of their specialty cocktails, my friend ordered pancakes and I had a traditional 2 egg breakfast. The pancakes were amazing, they come with the best homemade syrup. I highly recommend them. My eggs came with choice of meat (which I subbed friend), potatoes, and a biscuit. The biscuit might be one of the best in town (close second to Perly's). I look forward to trying them for dinner soon! read more

My boyfriend and I went to the stables for a nice date night. We walked in and the atmosphere was very minimalist, with an upscale and intimate feel. I personally don't have a minimalist style so I would have preferred to see a little bit more of an inviting atmosphere. I couldn't really get a read on their style or what their brand was. We started off with a couple cocktails and they were on point, very good. We then had the muscles and scallop small plates to start off. The muscles were in a very intricate coconut milk sauce which I have never had anything like. It was very good. We wanted more sauce. And the bread that came to dip with the muscles was amazing. The scallop dish also had very very great flavor, the scallops were a tad over cooked though. But the greens that came in that dish were phenomenal. They must have been marinating for a long time. For our entrees we chose the rabbit and the duck dishes. The duck dish was extremely rich. The sweet potatoes were very mapley and sweet and the duck came with a cranberry sauce. My boyfriend and I ate a little of each dish and traded back and forth because both dishes were the perfect balance. The rabbit dish was kind of a noodle dish that was very warm feeling, simple taste but also intricate and different. It had a creamy sauce with veggies and the rabbit was like a pulled pork texture. Both were amazing, but I wouldn't have been able to eat that duck dish all the way through if that was what I ordered and didn't have someone willing to trade throughout, it was just sooo rich with the sweet potatoes. Our server was cute and bubbly and totally easy to talk to and helpful. She created a good vibe for us.
