Second only to Biltoki, but I am starting to think they are neck and neck. Yes this place gets packed but lucky for anyone coming in and having to wait....the bar is right in the front foyer and will serve you some delicious drinks while you wait for a table. I would suggest a Kalimotxo (Cali-mow-ch-oh) which is a red wine mixed with coke. Or a Pecan Punch which is extremely strong and you may be put off by the first taste, but after 2 or 3 sips you'll be a fan, and after just one of them you will feel the "punch" that drink gives you. The food is amazing and it is served family style (i.e. you all get soup, salad, bread, spaghetti, beans, fries, green beans) to share, and then your main course. I would suggest the baked Lamb, since it is a traditional Basque dish and it is done extremely well. read more

We were on a road trip coming back from Salt Lake City to California. Needed to stop for lunch, hadn't ever been to Elko, NV and did a search for local flavor...what a find! This Basque style restaurant is wonderful! We ordered the Basque family style lunch with lamb chops, one with, one without garlic. I stayed in Elko on my trip across country. I was recommended this place by the hotel I was staying at. It was in town, and had a nice old charm to it. The cabbage soup was killer and even my soup hating husband loved it. The currizo was very tasty too. I read how many people raved about the salad dressing and it was not what I expected. It was like it wasn't done being made or couldn't decide if it wanted to be ranch or another dressing. The steak and fish were great. Full of flavor and great portions. What I really didn't enjoy was all the sides. I understand when you mass produce things it has to be bland to accommodate the pickiest pallet. The great beans tasted canned as well as the spaghetti sauce. I would much rather have paid what I paid for smaller flavorful food then what was served. Bacon wrapped filet is Heaven and big enough for 2 especially with all the sides, Soup, Salad, Fresh Bread, Fries , green beans, red beans and spagetti. We drive 4 hrs just to have this wonderful, people think we are crazy, but you just can not beat the quality of the food. read more

This place is just a bit out of the norm if you have never experienced Basque dinning but rest assure the food here is fantastic. Visted the Star on two occasions over my 30 day stay in Elko, the first time I ordered the ribeye stake and it comes to the table in the form of half aside of cow amazing piece of meat. Now over a 100 years old, The Star Hotel is a living fossil. In fact when you walk into this "Basque" restaurant, you can smell the history in the air: cabbage soup, lashings of whiter-than-white bread, a "salad" composed of wilted iceberg lettuce drowning in mayonnaise, a choice of meat (e.g., chicken fried in deep fried fat or archival roadkill on the hoof), canned spaghetti and canned green beans, and a pile of odoriferous French fries that defies description. Such is the basic drill, plus the vicarious thrill of being seated next to larger-than-life characters (if by large one means alarmingly corpulent). All of it is meant to remind us that early Basque miners once ate here, and not that it bears the slightest resemblance to the cuisine of this noble race of people. Like miners of old, you indeed need a cast-iron stomach to dig into this mess. And it's expensive too! $85 for two plus tip seems a tad excessive for this history lesson in advance of a possible cardiac arrest. This place is all about quantity over quality. You get heaping portions of side dishes along with a gigantic main course. The soup was very tasty and well seasoned. It was the best part of the meal. The salad was bland. The bread was borderline stale. The fries were soggy. The beans and spaghetti were really over cooked. My baked lamb was mainly fat and bone. Coming from Vegas for a business trip, the steak sandwich was definitely good especially with the added garlic. I would have given 5 stars but the restaurant pulled the rug from under me. I didn't notice the mandatory 15 percent for take out until I got home. I've been here a couple times while working in Elko, and overall I like this place. The communal seating is kinda fun, and the steaks and other meats are excellent. The cuts are huge if your into that as well. I think the baked lamb is probably the best although my coworkers swear the ribeye or new york is best. So why 3 stars, and not 4? The sides that come family style just aren't very good. The green beans taste canned, the fries are a bit soggy, and I don't get the spaghetti. If you're in town, I'd say give it a try. read more

This place was fun, good, and definitely a must-do when you're in Elko. But the truth is it wasn't as great as everyone led me to believe. The cabbage soup was tasty and balanced, the salad and dressing were very good, and the sides were also good. My sirloin was huge, not incredibly tasty, and slightly on the tough side. Service was very good. The place was jammed. We waited at least an hour to be seated,, but that's part of the experience. I will eat there again, maybe order something different. We went here with a group, and that's a good thing. It's family dining, where the side dishes are brought out in big bowls/plates, and it's easy to eat way too much here. The people I was with seemed to enjoy their steaks well enough. I had the trout, and it was good. I don't remember noticing any vegetarian entrees AT ALL, so it's a good thing I eat fish sometimes. The salty cabbage broth soup and garlicky Caesarish salad that started the meal were nice. A good place to go as a group, provided that the group doesn't include vegetarians. read more

This not an elegant five star restaurant, but the food is great quality, served family style, and there is lots of it. wonderful grilled cod, a large petite new york and all the fixings including bread, salad, fries, beans etc. Great for kids and groups. Really good! Was really blown away by the food. The menu has some steep price tags but I had the bacon wrapped filet special for 23 dolars and that includes a whole meal with sides soup etc. in authentic basque style. I must admit... The food used to be much much better. The Star used to be one of those places you would go out of your way to eat. People would come visit just to go there. Now it's not even close to first choice. Most days not even worth the wait or the crowded dining you endure to get a taste of their cuisine. My mother was born in Elko,NV and I still have family there. No trip to Elko is complete without a stop at The Star. It is heaven. I love love love it and my impression of the place hasn't changed in the 45 years I've been a patron. My only complaint is that I live so far away and my visits are so infrequent. There isn't a bad dish on the menu and they are so friendly and customer oriented. I wish they would send out an expedition to the Kansas City area. That would be heaven. read more
