Honestly it's the worst places I've ever gone it's so loud the steaks are bland cabbage soup smelt and tasted disgusting. The salad was dressed with miracle whip, they didn't have ranch. The sides looked disgusting didn't even want to touch them but they fries were good only went there because we had a gift card. read more

This is one of the coolest restaurants as far as history goes in Elko. The food is excellent and you better come hungry because they feed you a ton! I went for lunch and had the spicy haddock and it was to die for! It was served with a salad, cabbage soup, and fries too! We couldn't pass ok dessert after reading other reviews on the bread pudding... what a great decision that was! This had to easily been the best bread pudding ever! Must try this place! This place is quite popular. Our party of three came here today for lunch around 1:30. It was very busy, but we were still able to be seated right away. As suggested by other reviewers, I ordered the steak sandwich with mushrooms and garlic. I thought it was fairly good, but I certainly wouldn't say this place was excellent. The salad was completely drenched in a garlic dressing. Other reviews seem to like this, but other than a overpowering garlic taste to iceberg lettuce, that was practically wilted, there were no other flavors. Same is to be said of the steak sandwich. I did like the slivers of garlic on the sandwich, but that was probably enough garlic for the entire meal, no need to douse everything else in it. This restaurant gets the three stars because of the service, not the food. The hostess was welcoming and our server was very friendly and great about giving recommendations. We came to this restaurant on a recommendation from a business associate of my husbands. I was satisfied but not overly impressed. The interior was not very impressive, very outdated and cheap looking. I did like that all of their food was homemade and our waitress was very attentive and polite. Maybe I got overheated walking to the Stars from our hotel, but waiting for 30 minutes to get a table was frustrating. Although every everyone waiting was friendly. The food itself was more than plentiful but not out of the ordinary. My lamb chop was tasty and the garlic heaping. My husband's steak was huge but not very tender. Once the main attraction is consumed, there is little room for the rest. The food could easily have fed a family of four. I felt guilty wasting it. read more

I miss The Star hard! There was never, ever a time I left The Star not completely pleased and ready to burst. If you are judging your experience based on the green beans or the lack of fancy tableware, you do not deserve to eat here. You are not visiting a fancy froo-froo square plate, mason jar restaurant, so if that's what you are expecting, it's YOUR fault you left dissatisfied. There will be a ridiculously long wait, so get a drink at the bar and enjoy listening to the old Basque men chat. Picon Punches are not for the weak; ONE knocked myself, my mom, my aunt, and my grams on our asses. You will sit next to people you don't know at the same table. It's just like Thanksgiving with the in laws (not really, but the overheard conversations can be entertaining). You don't pass food to those people you don't know, you get your own servings, so chill. The food is served out of plastic, worn in bowls and plates. No, it isn't fancy, but if a restaurant has to be fancy maybe they are trying to mask the fact their food isn't really that good. Yes, your sides are actually spaghetti, green beans, baked beans and fries. I love how random that is, but really I'm only there for the soup, salad and MEAT. Why would anyone cry about being served such an awesomely diverse amount of food? Out of all the times I ate at The Star, I don't think I ever ate the baked beans or spaghetti sides, so if you don't like it, don't eat it. It's not like you will go hungry neglecting some of the sides. Your meat choice will be cooked to PERFECTION and smothered in garlic. If that is all they served, I would be no less a fan. Your bill will be huge, but after the melt-in your melt cow that rivals any other steakhouse I've been to, it's like pocket change. One last thing, if you can't make dinner, go for lunch and get a steak sandwich. You will fall in love. I can't say enough about The Star. read more

We ate at the star after a recommendation from our hotel - obviously the poor girl at he hotel confused expensive with "good". Steak was good, fries were great, ranch beans very good, cabbage soup very good, spaghetti not great, garbanzos ehh, salad dressing good, bread ok, wine nice and good pricing. It is a sizable New York steak with the option of being topped with roasted garlic which I highly suggest, served on a big fresh piece of french bread. Along with that comes the traditional sides of fries that are fantastic and a green salad with a dressing that you will find yourself craving after you leave. It's not the best food I've ever eaten, or even the best Basque food (I still like the J&T in Minden best), but to come through Elko on a bitter cold winter night and walk into the loud and warm dining room of the Star Hotel is an experience that is hard to beat. For one night in Elko we could not have made a better choice. This is a wonderful old world experience, combining tons of really good food with an amazing staff. Anna was quite attentive and brought several additional items to make the dinner really special. The soup and salad were quite tasty, but the baked lamb was a true delight. The side dishes were somewhat overwhelming, but we did our best to sample everything, finding the garlic green beans the best. All in all, a great experience at a most reasonable cost. read more

Get hear early! They open at 5 (at least on Thursday) and people were waiting to get in! When we finished our dinner about an hour later there were many many people waiting to be seated! I don't think they take reservations. I had the pork tenderloin - big slab of pig cooked perfectly. Wife had the baked beef - delicious! Served family style you get soup, salad, bread, beans, a veggie and fries! There's no way you can eat it all! There's a nice bar there too - so waiting is not all that bad :). Elko has - surprisingly enough - some good restaurants, but if you're there for only one night you gotta try this place! And if you are looking for a place to stay check out the Thunderbird Motel about 2 blocks away... great place! read more

This place is awesome. It may say Basque style, but it american food really. Just the restaurant is set up in the traditional family-oriented basque style. The prices are great, the most expensive thing on the menu is the steak sandwich (12.99). It is also the best thing on the menu. The food is garlic heavy, so if you don't like garlic, you might want to rethink going here. Lots of history to this place as well, so make sure you check out everything. They also have a bar. Coming from the wine country, it was a cheap thrill to only pay $8 corkage! That alone gets a star. From the moment we walked in we felt like this was 'our kind of place'. Tony chose a Ribeye and I had the lamb Shoulder, each was cooked to perfection, and the left overs days later on my workday lunch salad reminded me just hoe tasty each item was. Something the Basque resturant does different, is add sauteed slivered garlic to anything you want, it kicked everything up, loved it. We started with the cabbage soup, thin and flavorful, does not fill you up, but gives your palate a good place to start. The salad dressing, tated like the BEST home made creamed garlic that I remember from Chicago, I would go back there for the salad dressing alone. The sides were yummy and the usual, canned/jacked up green beans (another memory from my midwestern youth) great fries and we opted out of the spagetti. We shared a not great desert, but thats not why we went there. The picon was spot on. On our trip to Provo, Utah and back we hit the trifecta of Basque resturants, so look for other reviews. read more

I'm headed home to California after a family road-trip to Ohio. I ordered takeout from the Star Hotel due to the positive reviews, hoping for a decent steak at least. After waiting 30 minutes (the place was packed on a Thursday night) and enjoying an inexpensive glass of wine at the bar I received two enormous bags. Forewarned by the reviews I ordered for my family of five a mere two kids entrees and a single steak. The steak was generous and delicious (say yes to the garlic!) but what merits the 5 stars was the enormous quantity of quality sides - salad, soup, bread, spaghetti, chili beans, green beans, french fries... We have food left over and it all tasted like home-cooking to my road-weary crew - each of my tired and picky children found at least one item to enjoy. I'm not sure I've sampled enough to know what Basque cuisine is. But I highly recommend this restaurant for hungry families looking for a homestyle experience. You may have to park a block away and wait a bit - I found it worth the wait. read more

Went to a company dinner and we were crowded into a back room with total strangers. I ended up with a very inebriated individual within inches of me. Not a lot to say, specially because I didn't wind up eating here. Arrived at the place and realized the loud noise right away, really loud music and people talking really loudly. No one received me, so I was about to enter the saloon to find a table and these two ladies were starring at me, until I asked for a table. They said they had a waiting list, even though I saw empty tables in the place, maybe because I was alone. So they put my name on the list, and I sit aside to work on some emails. When I tried to connect to Wi-Fi, I got a message that it had reached the maximum amount of people connected, and that I needed to wait for a spot.
