BEST PIZZA IN THE EAST BAY. I put June's among my top favorite pizzas -- probably alongside Tony's in SF. A group of friends and I popped in to try after an evening catching a World Cup game, and we found out that the pizza is everything the hype makes it to be. Staff were friendly and attentive, knowing which tables to bring orders to even with a lot of people around. The location in West Oakland is discreet but also mighty -- while slightly small, there's at least a parking lot outside! The industriality of the place adds character. Menu features marg and pepp pizzas -- limited but full of immense quality. Considering its size, the pizza is definitely a good bang for your buck! Our group got a half and half, and while both were absolute fire, I have to say the margherita is my favorite (and I think it's actually my favorite among all other pizza places I've had). Tl;Dr - Some say this is one of the best pizza places in East Bay, and if that's the case I hope some folks are wrong. While I dig the execution, the ingredients and the service felt short of this being anything but just ok pizza. Napa vibes, in a bad way. Ah yes, Oakland. While most know me to haunt The City, I do make it out to The Town every once in awhile. Most of the people I know lovingly call it Oakland Advanced Level, because if you f' around you gonna find out these days. But I digress, we were coming back from a fun little romp at the park for the Goth Gathering (super lame btw, was all just vintage clothes and temporary tattoos, where can I buy actual skulls in this town?) and we wanted to grab some dinner for when we got home. I did a quick research crawl on spots in the area (reddit, yelp, google) and June's Pizza kept coming up. I don't eat pizza as much as I want these days, years of beer and pepperoni za have made my stomach lining basically as sturdy as a piece of wet paper towel so I usually stick with Margherita if I get it. Personal favorites in SF are always gonna be Tony's (basic answer), Outa Sight (if you know, you know), Golden Boys (nostalgic, they got way worse), and anything thick detroit style (because I'm a Michigan boy at heart). So having sampled those titans, it's hard to impress me but when I walked in, I was excited. They have a warehouse location with a massive oven, fully decked out. The sign outside isn't even hung its some homeless encampment looking peice of board, complimented by their ridiculous 2 item menu in the front (check the pictures to see what I mean). Heh, not gonna lie it's kind of a little ironic in a bad way when you are literally 100ft from a real Beirut-style encampment selling $35 margherita pizzas with a play on that "this is a rustic no frills pizza shop", meanwhile all your customers are 40 year old Caucasian "I work in finance" types. Yeeeaaahhh, idk, that vibe didn't age well with me as I waited. But regardless of a vibe, I judge on flavor, so I grabbed the Margherita pizza, and a garlic dipping sauce. I noted the Orion Beers, June's Pizza wine (they make their own?) and other little goodies they were selling. Super odd and specific selection but I mean, I like all those things. We get home, I open the pizza that has my clear order stamped on it, and find... pepperoni pizza. Ok so they ignored my order thats fine, we got a more expensive pizza for less. Me and my wife were actually kind of regretful we didn't do the half and half so we rolled with it. First impressions are it looked gorgeous, they have the basil leaves in each corner and a ton of soft moss-like parmesan cheese all over it, great textures. But that's where it ended unfortunately and I really wanted to like it based on visuals. All I can say is the flavor just wasn't there, unfortunately. That delicious mossy looking cheese? Bland, either it wasn't aged or was skim or something, it tasted like nothing. The sauce, the cheese, all just really lacked seasoning / flavor. The only saving grace was that sauce, which was some of the better garlic sauces I've had. You can't rate a pizza based on an optional dipping sauce (though I mean if you get Outa Sight without that ranch, you committing a flavor felony ma' boy!). To be honest the pizza was better when I went back to it hours later. The dough got softer and everything was chewier and better, highlighting the quality of the dough. All in all though, this was really nothing to write home about at the end of the day. 5/10 on the pizza. Maybe in a pizza wasteland in a side of town that literally looks like a 3rd world nation, this might be considered best of, but I have a suspicion if I shopped around I could find something a lot better than this. It really wasn't my cup of tea but I could see it being better for some types of people if you go in person maybe, just not me. Next time I'm gonna check out that guy down the street with the BBQ, is he there always? That looked fire, I have regretz. For the bosses: Bring them prices down a little and I could see this being better. If the prices were 20% less I would probably consider this a 4. Throw in the sauce without paying $3.50, the pizza REALLY needs it. Use aged or more flavorful cheese for the finishing topping, that could also push it over the edge. More sauce, or more flavorful sauce, idk. The dough, no notes, it's delicious. May be a little harsh on this one, but you know I don't pull any punches, credit where credit is due. Really fun, bright, casual and delicious pizza place slinging out the same two (usually) pizzas nonstop - you know that means they do it with excellence :) Parking was a little tricky in the industrial surroundings but June's and the beer garden next door are an easy walk to find. Enter through the red door and glance up at the cardboard to find the day's offerings (usually just margherita or pepperoni by the whole, although slices available later at night and specials sometimes available during the week). There's likely a short line but very kind and friendly cashier, and while you wait you can decide if you want to add any sauces to your order (dipping sauces like homemade pesto or garlic sauce), and if you want to pick up any drinks from the fridge. The bathroom is outside of the restaurant in the shared building and is clean and easy to find. Service is quick so don't be alarmed about seating even if the place looks packed - people enjoy their piping hot pizza quickly and there's good turnaround for both the tables and the fun bar where you can watch the pizza dough stretched, sauce spread, toppings arranged, pie fired, and finishing cheese grated on top. We got a half n half (margherita on one side, and margherita with pepperonis on top on the other side basically). The crust was at places a little too black but overall crispy and delicious, and the sauce and cheese on top tasty. The fresh basil leaves to be eaten on top were aromatic chef's kiss and I wish more had been provided! Don't worry, the pepperoni is fancy too and provides a little kick. The price was quite fair for a large and good quality pizza ($36 I believe) and 8 generous slices more than enough for 2 people to share. We had a white pizza with stone fruit, bacon and chicory. I love creative pizza flavors but I tapped out over one slice. They also had Margherita and pepperoni options. The ambience is industrial and loud, so if you like that sort of hard-surface vibe, go off. There's no sign outside. Parking is impossible especially when some tool in a Rivian takes up 2 spots in the minuscule lot. You are expected to order at the counter, pick up your own paper plates and plastic utensils, bus your own tables, AND leave a tip. The server wiped down one of the tables with a damp towel; instead of collecting the crumbs and detritus in her hand, she wiped them onto the floor and chair seats. The floor was littered with crumbs, shredded cheese and napkins. Perhaps some training is in order. We had such a great time at June's! I love how simple the menu is, only offering three pizzas: margherita, pepperoni, and a rotating seasonal option. The staff were friendly and efficient. They answered my questions about allergens in the dipping sauces. Hooray for tree nut-free pesto! The ambiance was pretty rad too. The space has such tall ceilings that, although the tables are pretty crammed together, it didn't feel very cramped at all. The yellow tile on the pizza oven and the overall aesthetic of the place are really lovely. The pizza was absolutely delicious. I read the reviews and finally gave this place a try. Casual spot with table and bar counter seating by the kitchen. Cool decor. Friendly staff. Service was fairly quick at about a 10-15 min wait with 6 orders ahead of me. XL pizza only (8 large slices) and each one is a meal. Marg and Pepp were the only options besides a 1/2 & 1/2 combo. Finally had the chance to the June's pizza! Located near a brewery (perfect combo... pizza and beer) June's pizza is a fast pace pizza restaurant where there's not a lot of option to choose from. Margherita, pepperoni or their weekly special. Straight to the point and full of cheese. Service is quick and seamless, you order, you pay and you wait either for takeout or dine in. Though not a lot of tables, I feel as if it's better suited to take to go to maybe eat with beer next door or even to take home! I got the 1/2 margherita and 1/2 pepperoni. June's has been on my list to try for awhile now and I'm so glad I did. June's is a semi-small restaurant and the tables/counter-tops are first come, first serve. They only have 3 pizzas on the menu with 1 being a seasonal topping. The crust is a sourdough crust which does have a chewier texture, but I think it balances out the cheese, sauce, and toppings really well. The pizza itself was incredible, we got the half and half option. We came around 5:30pm so it was about that "almost" busy time where patrons started rolling in around the same time we did. There's a brewery next door so it could be a little confusing depending on where you parked. There's 2 places to park, the ideal one up front is usually full so we went to the one right the corner adjacent to brewery. Table seating is pretty normal. Watch out for strands of hair on the wall if you sit next to it. Pizza sauces are extra but I think it's a generous serving. The sauces themselves are really good too. When they serve the pizza they don't cut it out to your plate, you gotta grab it yourself which can be a hassle since it's really hot and they don't get you the utensil to pick it up, you just drag it to your plate or that's what we did. -1 star for not providing the utensil needed to get the slices off. We asked and they directly said they can't give us one. +1 star pizza was amazing +1 star sauces amazing +1 star how filling the pizza was with quality ingredients. The parm shavings were amazing and fresh Now to the final -1 star and why we won't be coming back anytime soon. When provided cups for water, our cups were VISIBLY chipped around the rim where we put our lips. We returned the first cup and they exchanged it willingly. Sat down to realize they exchanged it with ANOTHER CHIPPED CUP located on the same area as our other cup. I used my fingers to feel the rim to double check it wasn't just me, it was definitely chipped and I can feel the chip pull on the skin of fingertips. I took the cup myself back to them and let them know they gave us another chipped cup. I was confused why the young lady sighed and said they'll help me in a moment. I stood there waiting and after a few more minutes I flagged down another person and they blew me off with another "someone will help you in a sec" response. I left the cup there and shared the water cup my husband had. I cant confidently recommend this place, thought the pizza is great, as somewhere to sit down and eat in if they can't provide bare minimum utensils for customers to enjoy their pizza OR quality inspect their glass cups to prevent injuries. Don't judge a book by its cover! Late night on a Friday and we were starving. Either many places closing down or required a reservation- Junes Pizza looked like the only option. I have been to West Oakland plenty of times, but usually not at night especially around 11pm. We ended up driving right past this location and had to loop around. From the outside it's a warehouse with no real visible sign. Pulled up into the parking lot where there were some other cars - only way I knew that we must be at the right spot. Right before you walk in there is a wooden sign for the place - but on the ground :) You walk in and it's bustling! There were people there and they have a decent size for seating. There are only two types of pizza...ever. I asked the staff if they change it up and the said no. Judgment started to creep in as I thought - how can the stay in business with only two pizza options that are almost identical....well the reason why is cause their pizza is DELICIOUS!!!! They have a normal margarita pizza and then margarita with pepperoni. Pizza came out quickly and was so thin and flavorful I was truly blown away. Visited on a Saturday around 6pm with a friend, restaurant was busy but no wait to order. Seating was mostly taken so we did togo and ate next door at the brewery. Food: Margarita Pizza - good, crust has a nice chewy texture, with little charged spots, sauce is light and fresh with vibrant tomato flavor, mozzarella is mild and milky with a nice chew, Parmesan on the crust and fresh basil were great to finish off the pie Pepperoni pizza - great, pepperoni cups were nice and small with a good amount of spice and crisped up in the oven nicely, the other toppings were the same as the margarita, wished there was some hot honey on the side for drizzling or dipping the crust into Service was quick and efficient, order at the counter and wait for your pie, which took maybe 10 minutes before our pizza was ready. Loved that there were lots of togo plates available when you picked up the pizza and it was conveniently next to a brewery which had ample seating and outdoor patio space. All plus Tax for the privilege of dining in Oakland, California. We chose the Margherita as we didn't see the "$37.50 half and half" message scrawled on the bottom left of the overhanging hand written menu. Sadly it looked like they have one beer tap labeled "Beer". I have no clue what type it is. Never mind that. I passed. No diet cola here for those pre-diabetics. Sorry wifey. Lined this place. It's basically a shipping container pizzeria that serves only two types of pizza per day, a salad, and beer or wine, white or red. You can watch the pizzas being made, they're totally delicious, and the cheeeese! So good. We tried both that day, margherita and pepperoni. The basil they put on the margherita pizza is so good. Doesn't get more hipster than this. Pizza cred from fine dining cutting of teeth. Warehouse-y space in a semi-gentrified area of West Oakland that nobody in their right mind would have entered 2005 and earlier. Now it is crawling with puffy jackets, tapered pants/sweats, designer eyewear and strollers. On a weekend early evening the place was pretty darn crowded. Order at a table with an employee behind a POS register. Pretty barebones, super legit tiled pizza ovens open to be viewed, pizza cooks in full busy action. There are few tables, which get taken quick, but many get it to-go, and many take it to the brewery next door, which we were one of those. ONLY 1 size, a thin crust large. ONLY 2 types of pizza, a cheese and a pepperoni. The meat version may change, not sure. But you can do a half n half of the 2 types. For having such tight offerings, people were still lining up for this. Half n Half Pizza ($35/4*) The Crust: They use a sourdough crust. I could taste it slightly, but not as overwhelming as sourdough bread. For some reason I tasted it more when it was fresh on my first few bites. After that not really. There is a super nice chew to this dough, bubbles big time in that oven. No significant crispness, so to me this was closer to a Neapolitan style versus NY style. They do char this thing pretty aggressively, not on the bottom but the outer edges. The outer crust has several pockets of black/burnt spots, which I don't care for. I know they are actually trying to achieve this, but I find myself ripping extra burnt crust off, so it is kinda wasteful to me. The Sauce: Very sparse distribution. Sure it is there but the tomato flavor is very mild. Again more Neapolitan style versus NY style where the sauce is more concentrated tomato flavor with big hits of oregano. I'm definitely more of NY slice type of dude, more satisfying to me. The Cheese: Not sure what the main cheese is but it is very light. It literally just melds into the sauce without any cheese pull. I'm totally fine with this as I'm not a fan of heavily cheesed pizzas. But in what you lose in creamy cheese sensation, they return it in almost comical amounts of freshly grated parm all on the outer crust of the pizza. When parm is shredded in a fine grater like this, the shreds are super fine and delicate. Does add a stealthy boom of umami in the bites but also very messy as the grated parm falls all over the place. The Toppings: The pepperoni were the super tiny version. Not as salty as conventional American pizzerias. I loved it. In the take-out box they also put super fresh whole basil clusters on the corners of the box. The basil is still on the stems, so you have to rip it yourself onto your slices. I love fresh basil on pizza, so I didn't mind doing the extra work. Never seen this approach before, gotta be that hipster edge. Glad I finally tried them. And since I am now a fan of the brewery next door, this can definitely be a nice combo going forward. Yeah, I may not be the best person to ask about if you should go to June's Pizza. First timer alert. My friend and I went to check out all of the hype regarding this pizza. I will say that it is just the hype. Don't get me wrong, the pizza was good. They only offer 2 kinds of pizza. If I am not mistaken, the offerings change. How often? "I don't know". On the menu was a margarita or pepperoni pizza. The young lady taking the order wasn't that helpful. When we first walked in she advised that someone will be right with us and when she came back we advised that we were eating the pizza there, she said seat yourself. Hm ok. This is what I'm going to say, it's not about the food. It's about the environment and the mannerism of the staff. If you have someone that is taking orders, they should be able to inform you of the process, menu, and answer questions to ensure the best experience. Here not so much, it was more of a point and click experience in my opinion. The true definition of fast food. I didn't like the overall experience for a $35.00 pizza. Not to mention when you pay upfront, it is suggested to leave a tip...for what? To point, click and bust your own table? In this case it's called keep a tip instead of leave one. Gawd. FYI- slices are available after 9PM. I had to read that in the handwritten print on the butchers paper taped on the wall that the cashier kept pointing to. We arrived shortly after opening on a Friday afternoon. The parking lot was tiny but we secured a spot. There were several tables available to dining in. My best friend has been wanting to take me and our friends here for awhile, so we finally got the chance to! She placed the order while we waited at the Brix Factory Brewery next door. They're really nice to let us eat and drink there. Our wait time was about 30-40 minutes, but once we got our pizza, it was worth the wait and so delicious when fresh! I love how generous they are with the cheese and basil that compliments the simplicity of the pizza. Between the Pepperoni and Margherita pizzas we ordered, my favorite is the Margherita one! The pizza game from Oakland is strong with June's Pizza as a new up and coming contender with some real heavy hitters. My wife and I were introduced by family and were surprised to find it located next to a brewery in a small random lot. We lined up and patiently waited like everyone else. There is no menu board, but rather a hand written sign that includes their Margherita as well as a Special periodically. Seating is first come first served so you either have to get lucky or you can eat at the brewery next door as long as you order some beers to support their business too. Our party of 4 ended up sharing an entire Margherita pie and their special which at the time was pepperoni. The finished product looked like a Neopolitan style and NY style pizza had a baby. Puffy/airy crust with a nice char around a massive pie. Extra large slices that are best eaten when folded down the middle with a slightly crisp bottom that has some chewiness. Not as paper thin and crisp as NY Style, but not too soft requiring a fork/knife like Neopolitan. Each pie looked so appetizing covered in shredded parmigiano reggiano and huge leaves of fresh basil. Saying the taste was incredible is an understatement! Absolutely love how the cheese melts into the sauce which has so much depth of flavor. The balance of natural tomato sweetness and acidity was on point. The thicker cuts of pepperoni were so meaty and added a good amount of saltiness to an already outstanding slice. Got a pepperoni pie to go and it definitely hit the spot. There was a bit of a wait, but that's expected when your pizza is being made fresh--and it was well worth it. The pizza was really good: not overly saucy, the pepperoni had that perfect balance of soft with just enough crisp, and the sourdough crust was the real standout. June's Pizza is tucked away on a bit of an obscure street and housed in what looks like an old industrial warehouse, with the high ceilings, open space, and cool, minimalist vibe giving the place a bit of an unexpected charm and a unique vibe that I kind of dig. The menu keeps things simple, with just margherita or pepperoni as the staples, plus a rotating special that changes regularly, and I love that they offer an option for half-and-half pies, which is exactly what I went for. We grabbed ours to go but couldn't resist trying a slice fresh out of the oven, and it absolutely hit the spot. The undercarriage is thin but sturdy enough for that classic fold-and-bite moment, with a great chew and just the right scattering of char and blistered edges throughout and extending into the crust. The red sauce is bright and tangy, the pepperoni brings a savory kick (without being overly oily or salty) with a little spice, and the cheese is creamy and rich. Bonus points for the generous snowfall of shredded parmesan that gets rained down across the entire pie and the thoughtful touch of tucking the fresh basil off to the sides for takeout so it stays fresh and unwilted in transit. The staff were friendly and we had a fresh, piping-hot 18-inch pie in under 10 minutes. At that size and quality, the value is hard to beat as it easily feeds 4 people (or fewer with plenty of leftovers!). We went right when they opened around 4 p.m. so there was no line but I would absolutely wait to have this fresh as it's that good (and also since they don't take phone or online orders ha). read more

Delicious pizza! We were a group of 4 and decided to get half pepperoni and half marg. Slices were big, 8 slices were in the pie. We also tried the garlic sauce, that was delicious as well. We arrived 30 minutes after it opened, so we were able to find parking quickly. They do have a parking lot out front. Also, since we arrived early, seating was readily available for a group of 4 as well. It was a great spot to eat with friends. read more

Junes is iconic in the bay for a reason. I will admit, when I first looked at photos and heard it wasn't truly a restaurant, and only served 2 types of pizza, I was skeptical. But the glowing reviews brought me in and boy were they correct. With the simplicity of the menu it helps the line move fast, and helps your order come out quicker. It also helps them use the freshest ingredients possible so everything tastes fantastic. The pizzas are large so they're easy to share. We tried one of each. The margarita was the crowd favorite, hands down. Seating is very limited, so be prepared to sit elsewhere, wait, or battle it out for seating. While you sit you can see the pizza oven which is pretty fun. If Junes was closer we would be here all the time! read more

Pizza place happened to be next door to the brewery I was at. Small parking lot if you manage to snag a spot; otherwise, it's street parking. After 9 PM, they serve select pizzas by the slice for around $5. They had the margherita pizza slices, which was the perfect pizza slice to start off with. Quality, simple ingredients used. I couldn't help but notice the finely grated cheese and fresh basil on top. Simple yet so flavorful! The crust was somewhere between a thin crust and sourdough mixture. Two of my favorite things. Great pizza and great vibes. My boyfriend said he heard about a good local pizza spot and I wasn't sure what to expect from it's unassuming entryway. A door that needs a little jiggle to open and a handmade sign that says come in. But inside is a cozy spot full of energy. They've got a no frills menu, but the pizza is quality.
