My daughter and I get an 18-inch pie from this place every other weekend because she loves their sweet little pig pie and pizza in general. I don't know why the pies cost so much, but they are only a few blocks from our place, so I want to support the few restaurants that set up shop in West Oakland. However, I'm starting to sour on this place. I don't mind overpaying for pizza; that's just edible, but on a few occasions, I've been appalled by what these folks try to get away with. A couple of months ago, they gave us a pie that was so burnt I had to call to complain, and they replaced it with a less burnt pie. Perhaps they don't know that extremely burnt food is full of carcinogens. This week, we ordered our usual 18-inch pie. This pie was a Frankenstein pie; half of it tasted like it had been sitting under the lamp all day. A telltale sign is how stiff the cheese is; the old dough feels as if I'm chewing on rubber, and the slices are stiff and salty overall, though some slices taste a bit fresher and crunchier. I was disappointed. If you're going to overcharge for mediocre pizza, the least you could do is give people what they are paying for. If I wanted old, stale pizza, I would've asked for the slices that sit under the lamp all day. Moving forward, if we order from this place, I will walk over, place the order, and wait for it, so we don't get cheated again. This place is a reminder of why certain restaurants often fail. The food is overpriced, and they are inconsistent with their service, if not disrespectful, in how they sometimes treat and feed their customers. I've been here a few times before to watch a warriors game. They've got tons of seating and of course they stream all of the games. This place has great pizza. Again, I'm going back to how I started. The good - the flavors are top notch and they have gluten free offerings. They have a special every 2-4 weeks and they are fine. But their other offerings are solid. They also have very good salads and I have taken them home and have had left overs. I feel like greens and proteins are well represented. The people working there are nice and professional. They are also very helpful. This spot is clean. When there, I've sat at different places. The tables and floors are clean. They have a lot of business - to go and indoors eating. For some it seems to be a spot to hang out. The bad - they can run out of salads and then don't replenish them. The ugly - the wait at times is intense. I had a hard time ordering online and went in to order. I wanted to grab a pizza and go, but no. I couldn't do that. I had to wait. This also impacts my orders. Sometimes I want to order a pizza but 57-62 minutes is a long wait when I'm 10 minutes away. This is my only gripe. All in all, good pizza at a great price. Their pizzas are already reliably delicious, but this deal is genuinely outstanding value since you get a large 18" pizza, your choice of a Caesar or dinner salad, and four very large sea salt chocolate chip cookies, all for $35. We grabbed two of these specials for a group of six and still had leftovers, so I'd say one combo easily feeds three people and could probably stretch to four as long as no one is absolutely starving. The pizzas themselves are ultra thin but still hold up structurally since you can lift and fold each slice without everything collapsing, which is exactly how I like to inhale my pizza. I personally wish the crust were just a touch more burnt and crackly on the edges, but even without that extra char, the flavor and bouncy chew of the dough were spot on. We ordered the Hot Italian and the Sausage & Roasted Garlic pies and absolutely loved both, especially the housemade sweet Italian sausage that appears on each, which is savory, slightly sweet, and super satisfying in every bite. Their house tomato sauce deserves its own shout out because it hits that ideal balance of sweetness and acidity and ties everything together perfectly. On the Sausage & Roasted Garlic it plays beautifully with the rich roasted garlic purée, and on the Hot Italian it stands up nicely to the Calabrian chilis and chili oil without getting lost. The sea salt chocolate chip cookies that come with the special are huge and packed with chocolate chips, and that little hit of salt really enhanced the flavors but the something about the texture was a bit off for me as it wasn't quite chewy or crumbly but rather something in between, which left me a little confused. Another big plus is that Violetta has a full bar so you can pair your meal with a beer, a glass of wine, or a cocktail to match whatever pie you are in the mood for. Between the quality of the ingredients, the thoughtfulness of the flavor combinations, and the generosity of the Restaurant Week deal, Pizzeria Violetta is an easy recommend and a spot I would happily return to with a group (or by myself with plenty of leftovers!). read more

My wife and I got pizza for the first time from Pizzeria Violetta yesterday evening at Prescott Market. I didn't realize this when I first looked at photos of the menu online, but the pizza menu is actually divided in two: the left side of the menu are the flavors that you can get as slices, while the right side of the menu is whole pie only. Don't be like me and get excited over trying out a slice of Hot Hawaiian you saw on the menu ahead of time, because that's not possible unless you order a whole pie. Between the two of us, we got four slices of pizza: 1 Pepperoni Slice $5.50 1 Sausage and Roasted Garlic Slice $5.50 1 Tomato Basil Pesto Slice $5.50 1 Sweet Little Pig Slice $5.50 Since everything was already sitting in the display case, after placing our order, we had to wait a few minutes for the slices to be re-heated in the oven. In my opinion, a reheated slice will never taste as good as a fresh slice of pizza in my opinion. While the cheese was a bit melted after spending a minute or so in the oven, it quickly hardened and reminded me of cold pizza only a few minutes later. The dough itself I thought was well made: the pizza is stretched really thin and the crust is well-fermented with good aeration. Of these four slices, my favorite was the sausage and roasted garlic slice followed by the basil pesto slice, which had a nice drizzle of aged balsamic on top of it. If I'm looking for good pizza and beer in West Oakland, as well as a nice patio to hang out, Pizzeria Violetta is perfect for that. If you're looking purely for the best pizza in the area, I would recommend June's pizza a few blocks down the street. read more

We had dinner at this pizza joint over the weekend, the restaurant attached to the Prescott Market Hall on 18th Street. They were out of several items on the menu in the evening and not very apologetic about it. In fact, service was not the friendliest. But it was sufficient, and wait time was reasonable once we got our order in. We got two sandwiches, the chicken parmesan sub and italian sub sandwich, and both were really tasty. The chicken sub with crispy delicious chicken and the latter with savory italian meats and a nice zesty flavor from the sauce. I didn't even mind that it was a cold sandwich. I ate one half on site and heated the other half of the sandwich at home, and it was just as yummy both ways. We didn't get pizza this time around, but I love that they sell by the slice. And the pizzas in the display case looked appetizing, and well stocked/freshly made, even an hour before closing time. We ordered 4 slices of pizza. One of my slices was not available/not able to order. We ordered two pepperoni one Mediterranean and one pork sausage. I got my food first and then my boyfriend had to wait at least 15 minutes before his food which, if they made his pizza fresh, it would be understandable. They never called his name and he had to go up there and retrieve his food. The shakers on the tables were not helpful so we had unscrewed them and found rust underneath one of the shakers for the cheese. Overall experience was OK there was also the song scrubs that was played over and over and over again. seems like this place is new, close to the ballpark but honestly, it's just another pizzeria, nothing truly stands out. During the soft opening I tried a slice of the Sweet Little Piggy pizza and a dinner salad. The slice was great but the salad was a disappointment. Arugula was listed before romaine but I counted exactly three arugula leaves in the entire salad. The dressing was bland as well. Came back three weeks later and got the burrata and a barrel-aged Negroni. Both were perfect. The Negroni was flavorful and powerful, and the burrata (with pistachios, hot honey and a generous amount--thank you--of arugula) was perfectly balanced. Service was also friendly and quick. East coast meets west coast here. I'm an old dog from the NY metropolitan area and I've been learning a new trick. The Bay Area now has a fantastic pizzeria. The pizza slice with sausage was incredible. Just make sure that you ask the cashier to ask the chef to not drizzle the olive oil on it. I also had the chicken parmigian hero and it was the best one I ever had in my life. In addition to fresh perfectly prepared chicken cutlets it had great tomato sauce as well as pickled onions and lettuce which gave the traditional NY hero a California twist. I loved it.
