Was headed home and hungry after a social event on a Friday, but thought it's a good time to give Heshers a try. Live in Jack London square but haven't tried Heshers since the Crooked City Cider changeover. So glad I gave this a try. While Heshers gives this punk rock, aggro vibe online, inside the staff were warm and super friendly. My bartender helped me find the right drink (a Humboldt blueberry cider at 11% abv) and then I ordered the Meat Fungus pizza (lots of ground meat plus mushrooms). Sat at the bar and enjoyed my cider as well as convo with the other guests and bartender. In about 20 min, my pizza was ready. I took everything to go but was home in minutes. Couldn't wait for the first bite, and was NOT disappointed. Crisp crust pizza... not quite Detroit. Not Sicilian... def not New York style. But absolutely delicious. Ordered a pizza to go from Hesher's and it definitely delivered! First off, the theme here is unapologetically metal. The decor, the attitude, and the music all lean into it--they were blasting metal while I was there, which gives the place a fun, high-energy vibe that feels a little different from your typical pizza spot. If you're into that scene, you'll probably love it. The setup is super casual. You order at the counter and can hang out while you wait. They've got a great beer selection, and there's even an arcade area where you can play some games while your food is being made. It feels like the kind of place where you could easily kick back with friends for a while. I went with the Mortian, their all-meat pizza, and it was absolutely packed with toppings--pepperoni, sausage, and bacon, all garnished with prosciutto. If you're a meat lover, this one delivers. Every slice was loaded and really flavorful. The crust deserves a shout-out too. It's not thin crust, but it's also not deep dish. It lands right in that perfect middle zone--crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Really satisfying and a great base for all those toppings. Pizza itself was good and I like the different variety they offer on their menu. We ordered the elote pizza (forgot the actual name) and the pineapple pizza one (also forgot the name). The elote pizza came with a slice of lime and we really loved the creativity and flavors. It took almost an hour for our 1 pizza to come out- that being said, it seemed like they had a lot of online orders and a lot of the folks who ordered in also had to wait a very long time. On a chilly Sunday, I noticed Doordash was offering 25%-off to try Hesher's Pizza in Oakland. So I decided to order a "Hesh Law" regular size pizza. Wow, this is a good pizza. I like combo pizzas, and the Hesh Law is a supreme pizza. Don't let the rectangular shape fool you, this isn't a Detroit-style slab pizza like they serve at Square Pie Guys. My pizza had a thinner crust, and a thick layer of toppings that carried strong flavors. The serrano peppers gave each bite a dose of heat. A regular Hesh Law pizza is about 9" x 12" and has 8 slices (squares). Also, Parmesan Cheese comes in cute little "baggies." Well worth a try next time you're in Oakland. read more

I came on a Friday night and it was a chill atmosphere. Parking was easy to find. I got a flight and my favorite was the pear cider. Absolutely sweet and delicious! The pineapple jalapeño pizza was really good! It definitely has that kick of spice. The pizza with blue cheese and blueberry was interesting. I personally did not like it but I think it's worth trying if you want to venture. The pizza quality is great. I loved it and honestly I'm not a big pizza lover. However, you do have to wait a while for the pizza so if you're going to chat for a while - I recommend ordering first. Only in Oakland could I find a metal themed restaurant named after a movie that specializes in local craft beer/cider and elevated Homestyle pizza. I love the ambiance of this place. It blends old school pizzeria fixtures like roomy booths and pinball machines with rock/metal decor, including dive bar lighting and a shelf of used music and merch for sale. The bartenders are friendly and have good recommendations from their beer and cider list, a well-curated combo of local and regional options. (Thanks for categorizing cider accurately. The dry selections are very dry and the "off-dry" will also be pleasant if you don't like your cider at all sweet.) I'll focus on the pizza because that's why we go. The best way I can describe this pizza is school lunchroom pizza, but with elevated ingredients and actually good. It's actually more of a grandma pizza, but the crust is enriched, so it's pleasantly soft and slightly sweet. It's baked in a baking sheet, so thin and square. Sauce and cheese are high quality. But the main reason to try these pizzas is for the wild topping combos. Our favorite is the "Reverend Bizarre" with bacon, mushroom and Szechuan peppercorn hot honey. Other interesting pizzas include the "Canadian Tuxedo", with blueberries, bleu cheese, and bacon, and the "Coffin's Choice", a take on a Hawaiian pizza with added garlic and jalapenos . I'm giving this two stars because the service and the atmosphere are pretty amazing. It's a hard-core/metal/punk bar that just happens to sell pizza for some reason. But the pizza that they sell is very bad. I've actually had better frozen pizza. I really wanted to like this spot as a good hole in the wall place to buy a pie. Being 100% honest, I can admit that the service here is far more than lacking. I'm a frequent patron here. There's one guy in the front that's always generally nice but upon arrival does not acknowledge me, like ever. I have to ask to take my order. In my most recent visit here I placed an order in which that same gentleman and what seemed like to be a trainee took my order. Then the gentleman left and completely disregarded my order and I had to wait about 35-40 minutes for a pizza that was already finished. Then they brought it out to me cold. It just sucked bro. We decided to grab a pie to go and I was not too impress with it, but again, I think it takes the proper audience and hence I left it at 3 stars. Pizza - it's competitive in this area for sure. Hesher serves up some thin crust, so if you like it crispy (almost like flat bread), then this is your place. Sauce tasted pretty standard, and you basically have your typical sauce options. This is the same thing as toppings, so if you like flat bread pizza with make your own options, this place will be for you. Environment - metal, biker, pineball, are all accurate description of the inside. When I went, the mood lighting was red, and the music was blaring from the speaker. Two things before I say anything about the review; I've been pizza'd out for a long time from working around it. And I don't really make reviews. Hesher's is a mad solid spot. The owner Zach was hella cool, hospitable, and honest. The pie itself has it talking amongst my friends as we eat it right now. This shit is good. Absolutely incredible how texturally sound, flavorful, and surprisingly light it is. Anyways, Coffin was my order sub pineapple for double the garlic and it was the winner of the night. Mortician was their meat lovers and it was unctuous and meaty. Timbold was for the non pork eater and it was super balanced with its flavor profile between the tart olives and the meaty mushrooms. (The sauce is a smacker for it all) Long story short, if you come by and order or think about it, do it. They deserve that patronage. Let me start by saying: I was wrong. Loudly wrong. Dramatically wrong. Before going, I saw some tempting discounts on Yelp through a third-party service. I decided to be old-school and call the restaurant directly (support local, right?). When I arrived, I confidently expected those discounts... only to learn they didn't apply because I hadn't ordered through the service. I was heated. I got in my car muttering things like, "I'll never come back," and "He doesn't have to worry about me returning." Very final. Very dramatic. Then I got home and tried the pizza. The pizza was INCREDIBLE. Perfectly baked, flavorful, chewy-crispy crust, generous toppings, and just the right balance of sauce to cheese. The kind of pizza that makes you pause mid-bite and reconsider your life choices. The next day, under the cover of darkness (or so I thought), I returned -- this time ordering online and securing all the discounts. I tried to sneak in quietly... but he recognized me immediately. Karma works fast. No regrets. The pizza is outstanding. The crust is exceptional. And the 10x6 size is perfect for my single self -- enough to be satisfying without the pressure of leftovers judging me from the fridge. Moral of the story: Read the fine print. I stumbled on this place looking for an ATM and was intrigued by the environment. When I entered, people played Warcraft board-type games, pool tables, and pinball machines. I decided to stay and try one of their small pepperoni pizzas and enjoy the games. The food came out quickly, and it was delicious. This was my first visit to Hesher's Pizza and the pizza was amazing. We just ordered a pepperoni pizza however it was tasty! The service was quick, we ordered a pizza and had our order within 20 minutes. The music was a little loud but that didn't bother us as we were only waiting for our order for take out. If we would have stayed the music would maybe have been a bit loud as I felt like I was yelling to talk. There was outdoor seating so you could go out there if the music was too loud for you. I like saucy pizza, which is why I like Heshers. We were first introduced to the pizza when we used to come to crooked city cider. Now heshers has taken over the whole building in a prime area of Jack London Square. We came at opening time, 12 PM on a rainy Saturday for a friends birthday. Because it is a rainy weekend we had to change our outdoor plans and this is a great location for a large group with dogs who can hang out indoors. Also great because you order at the counter and don't have to deal with a group check mess. We ordered our drinks at the counter, and some people who were able to try small tastings if they were unsure of what to order. Pizza was ordered at the window in the corner and brought out to us according to our numbers. The staff was accommodating to our large group, and we were the only ones there until a Meetup took over the other half of the restaurant with their boardgames. There are also tons of boardgames in the cabinet that you can play and pinball machines in their own separate area, along with the pool table. Great place to keep entertained while enjoying your pizza, beer, wine, cider, kombucha, or nonalcoholic beverage. There is a water station right behind the cashier. There are two unisex restrooms, straight back. They have the little locks that tell you if they are in use or vacant, which is very helpful. They also do some heavy metal concerts here, which my husband was very excited about when he saw the listings for them. While we were there, the music was not very loud so we were able to chat freely. There are metered parking, free parking streets, or it is a walk down from 12th St. BART. They used to have a free Broadway shuttle, I'm not sure if that's still exists Join their social media pages and you'll be informed of special events, concerts, trivia, bingo, and what not. Our vegan friend is very happy that they have a vegan pizza option here. There is something for everyone! You can help bus your tables by taking empty glasses to the front and the rest of the trash area. There are benches in the front that you can hang out at if it's a nice day out. read more

Just good solid pizza and friendly staff. The pizza is more of a grandma's style pie (less thick and doughy detroit style) which I liked as it allowed for a good cheese to sauce to dough balance. Well baked, not too oily, and with a nice crispy crust (which was the best part). Also loved the fact that you can get one-hitters (personal sized) at a decent price point without having to commit to $25+ pizzas nowadays from comparable places. Allows you to try more pizza topping combos too. We got the Canadian tuxedo (very interesting) and the Hinterlander and appreciated the amount of toppings and balance for both. Would definitely return to get the Maquahuitl or other interesting combos. Buddy got a couple beers which he enjoyed. Also, staff was real friendly and also understanding with a Grubhub online ordering issue that had delayed getting the order in and out. Even with Grubhub being difficult the staff handled it. I came by here when it was Crooked City Cider and they were having a soft opening. So, I wasn't aware of the name change and change of ownership. They have pizza now, but I was here for a proper cider. The person working there was very nice and recommended some ciders for me to try. He really knew what he was talking about and I appreciated it. I do have to say that since adding the pizza, it has more of a punk-ish kind of vibe, where as the previous crooked city seemed fancier. The people hanging out there weren't the tech-ish professionals that I saw the first time. The crowd was diverse but was more punkish, and this included the guy who helped me. This is why I didn't recognize it. Also, the name sign is confusing. I thought it was a spot called Zerner's. But those are rich people's problems. Bottom line is that I got the cider that I was looking for (two to be exact) and that was fine and dandy by me. read more
