I can't believe I'd never been here before after living in SLC for 10 years! Love love love this venue. It's small and intimate but not cramped at all. I love the historic feel of this place. There's seating!! If you get there early enough there's theater style seating in addition to the standing room space. I loved having the option to sit or stand. There are two bars - one upstairs and one downstairs. I never had to wait long for drinks and the service was great. They have some snacks as well. Parking is available in the paid lot next to the venue or along the street, but it can definitely be limited so be prepared for that. read more

Awesome venue! I loved the historic vibe of the place. It's smaller, intimate, but yet still roomy that we didn't feel on top of one another or overly crowded. We got to see Max Mcnown who without a doubt will be one of the next big stars in the coming years. The staff were friendly, the sound was great, and the place was clean. I'm certain when the lights are on you can really see its is in great shape, whereas other venues likely look awful when the lights turn on. The bathrooms were clean, the drinks were fairly priced. I would definitely come back and will keep an eye out for upcoming shows. Don't put your drinks on the stage, security is on it and will ask you to get it off right away. All good, my bad! The actual venue is great! Poor rating due to ticketing experience. I purchased tickets through their "official resale" because the show was sold out, I was thinking this was the best option, safest, most likely to be scam free. However I was charged twice! I have a receipt of a double charge. After many emails and phone calls, The State Room presents box office says they can't help, AXS says they can't help so basically DO NOT buy from AXS resale (honestly both the box office and AXS will make me think twice before I buy again). Such a bummer I really like the venue but please learn from my experience. I would go to KSL or other resale sites before their "official" one. read more

Playing here is quite the amazing experience! It's nice and cold inside the venue so that the musicians don't pass out on the stage! The workers are amazing and they do everything they can to help people stay safe. I recommend always to wear earplugs when going to any concert. You can't tell the sound guy how to do his job and expect him to turn it down for you. That being said, 5 stars is the proper review. read more

With room for 300 standing and seated, an amazing sound system, a full-bar and a variety of local and national touring acts The State Room has it all. I have been to many shows here since it opened and always been pleased. I like that they have standing room for when you feel like getting your dance on but they also have comfy padded benches and seats for those times when you just want to kick back and relax. Owners Chris and Darren have been a big part of the music scene in Utah for many years. Both book talent for the Red Butte Concerts Series as well as the Utah Arts Festival as David M. previously mentioned. Darren was also the host of several popular shows on local favorite KRCL, the community radio station. With exceptional taste in music and a great sense of the national scene, Chris and Darren have booked some great acts at The State Room. the sound and setting in themis venue is incredible. However our experience was less than ideal as the venue was absolitely freezing. I mean Dcti air blowing on is the entire time. we see probably 50 shows a year lically and I've never experienced anything like this. we asked the only person we could find - the girls stamping hands - if it could be turned down and we were totally blown off. people actually had hoods and gloves on. Do better Stateroom cause your venue could be incredible if you make it a pleasant environment for your patrons. The band and sound was unreal though. read more

I love the State Room for its intimacy. Here's how this place works. You get your ID scanned at the gate by one of the big burly men that have one of two options in life: Security. Football. 21+ or fuck off. This is Utah. Most other states allow you to still attend the show, you just don't get the libation wristband. Now that I'm well over 21 and intolerant of teenage behavior at shows, I appreciate you Utah. Once your legal age is confirmed, you can hang out on the front patio or you can head inside for drinks and entertainment. Within one step inside, there's the ticket booth to your (sharp) right or a "bar"/drink counter to your (sharp) left. Prepaid tickets are checked at the door and exchanged for wrist bands. Drinks are reasonably priced for a venue like this and they were well staffed for the sold out show I attended. I would guess the stage room has a capacity of about 200. And there are options! If your legs are wrecked from old age and inactivity, you can watch the show from about 100 elevated seats in the back. If you really appreciate music and took the opportunity to come see a live show, you'll want to stand in the "pit" as close to the performers as possible. The great thing about this venue is if you want to skip out on the opening acts, the front patio is open all night long and they allow you to bring your drinks out as long as you stay within the confines of the gate. read more

At the spur of the moment we decided to listen to some live blues music at The State Room the evening before Salt Lake City's Blues Festival. The price was good at 20 bucks a ticket, and the bands were talented. Standing on the floor was fun, but the elevated, arena seating felt weird. Acoustics were excellent, and the crowd on this particular evening made me feel young. I guess the "Blues" are appreciated by an older crowd. Perhaps the techno generation won't allow themselves to express sadness in a creative manner. Do millenials think it's a sign of weakness? Maybe having an outlet for feeling blue can lower the escalating suicide rate. There's nothing wrong with singing "Stormy Monday." Monday's will always suck. The State Room was okay, but it lacked some soul on this bluesy Friday night. read more

Very friendly staff and great sound. Seating is fairly comfortable for a concert space, but it's a little tight for big fellows like myself. The disco ball kept shining a light in my eyes which was damn near impossible to avoid. They have a policy of no pictures or video but it wasn't enforced. Idiots in front of us and peppered through the crowd kept holding up cameras, sometimes even using flash. At almost $30 a ticket for a "B" act, it would be nice if they really brought the hammer down and kept the social media obsessed shallow set from ruining everything. read more

This is one interesting and cool venue...in a "I'm betting someone probably shoots porn in here" kind of way. Although, not in a creepy way. If you want to stay seated during a performance on the relatively small stage, they provide tiered rows of old church pews (sans the hymnal shelving). Although the cloth seating is desperately in need of a good cleaning - I don't even want to know what some of those stains are - they were comfortable, and allowed for a great view from anywhere in the house. The State Room really knows how to produce live music. The music and vocals are rich and well mixed. In the event you want to shake your groove thang, or form a wicked mosh pit, there is an open area down front with plenty of space in which to do so. A few small bar tables surround the perimeter; a spot for your tasty adult beverage in case you need both hands for...whatever. A disco ball hangs from the center of the theatre's black ceiling, which was only lowered once during the night we were there. I was really hoping for a chance to show off my Saturday Night Fever. But it didn't happen again, giving me the impression that its momentary appearance may have been accidental. Decent bar and draft beer selection for a small place. Prices are a little high for the undersized cocktail servings (6 oz?). Perhaps it was just the particular concert we attended, but I have truly never seen a more diverse audience anywhere in the state of Utah. The fascinating people-watching experience was well worth the combined price of parking, admission, and drinks. Keep a watch on their schedule and check out a show or two at The State Room. You never can tell what you'll see in addition to the musical performance. We were pretty entertained by our experience, and wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Chris and Darren (A.K.A., Spike) who have long booked talent for the Red Butte Gardens Concerts Series and the Utah Arts Festival, respectively, teamed up in 2009 to transform the defunct Children's Theater into one of the best music halls in the history of SLC. Just in the last eight weeks alone, the State Room has hosted the Watson Twins, Josh Ritter, and John Hiatt. And it is an incredibly intimate venue (just 300 seats) to be able to welcome talent of that caliber. True to the music, Chris and Darren do most of the show promotion themselves, avoiding the extra costs that generally need to be passed along to concert-goers. I really-really like the set up here. There is only one floor to contend with and about 80 movie theater style seats if you just wanna chillax and enjoy the music. Right in front of the stage is a nice intimate floor area if you wanna shake your thing. The drinks were priced fairly and there are two bars. It's not the best for meeting hot chicks, getting your grind on, getting f***ed up and puking in the bathroom or any of those other popular activities that you might find at other venues. Have seen many different shows here, all of them were great. Venue is 21+, which makes for a great atmosphere and no teenage shenanigans. Really small and intimate venue, allowing you to be very close to the stage action, or sit on staggered benches further back. The acoustics/sound in the venue has always been really good in my experience. One of my favorite concert venues in any city I've been to. Nick 13 and Cash'd Out were major highlight shows I've seen there. read more

The State Room, a complete review. I played at a City Weekly show here 2 years ago and have attended shows here, ergo your complete review. Stage review: The staff was great to work with, and the sound system is one of the best in SLC. Back stage is great, if I remember correctly there was foozeball or ping pong and 2 or 3 rooms you could hide out in. Loading gear was convenient because you could load in through the back of the building and your stuff could stay back stage until show time. Much better than leaving it out next to the stage and hoping somebody doesn't destroy your amp with a sticky alcoholic beverage. Attendee Review: The staff is also great from the concert goer end of things. The sound is still one of the best in SLC. It doesn't reek of unmentionable things that the cigarette smoke used to cover up, also it doesn't reek of stale cigarette smoke. The floor isn't sticky and there is no gear taking up room next to the stage. No foozeball or ping pong (Kidding). Theater seating is nice, but I feel a tad awkward standing in front of people who are sitting. Even though I get why its a plastic cup kind'o place, it still seems a little cheap and a lot wasteful. (I guess they're saving water). but whatever, I still Love watching shows here. read more

If your favorite act comes to SLC, you better hope they are playing at The State Room. They appeal to pretty much everyone. When I was a teeny bopper, I would have lived over there. Growing up, I had enough opportunities to stand right at the foot of the stage, enamored with whomever the talented male crooner happened to be. We had some great places back then, but they are long gone. Also, I'm too old for that crap nowadays, so imagine my surprise when I bought a ticket to see my second favorite band of all time ( yes, from my teenybopper years, no less ), and I wound up at a place as pleasant as The State Room. The whole experience was nice. I ordered my tickets online, but wanted them mailed to me. After what seemed an oddly prolonged period of time, I received an envelope with no return address and a nice note inside, telling me that somehow my tickets were put in his envelope too. So he decided to just forward my tickets to me. And it's going to be a great show! That's the kind of fellow-consumers we're dealing with. I wasn't even mad at The State Room for the mix-up. Upon arrival, I was greeted! wow, that was nice. True professionals who clearly enjoy the work they do. Loved the fact that there was a full bar. Also LOVED the seating! I'm just not a teenybopper anymore and I really only wanted to listen to that treasured music live. So I could treasure it. Plus how can I stand at the foot of the stage in awe of the band, staring at those bundles of sheer talent, almost on the verge of teenybopper tears when I dragged my overworked boyfriend to a live show on a week night when he hasn't been to a live show since The Cult had a top 10 single? So the seats were helpful. I was also entertained by the people my age who were still out there, trotting around in front of the stage. Could that have been me if I had fulfilled my heart's only desire back in the day and actually made it on that Toad the Wet Sprocket tour bus? I wondered , "What do these people do for a living?" They all looked like they hadn't worked all day, like I had. They had teenage 'dos and skinny jeans. Bling. Some of them even stood around making out. In public! When the music began, they continued their convos and rarely paid attention to my bundles of talent. I wanted to tell them to shhhhhhh. But then I remembered my new, nameless friend, who kindly sent my tickets on. He was probably one of them over there and I wanted to shush him. I decided that it was all okay. This is the second time I have been here, yet never have I been to a concert here. The State Room hosted Ignite Salt Lake and it is a great venue for that. It is 21+ so that is a plus as everyone is there to have a good time. The staff is friendly and the place is clean. Definitely need to see a concert there. The only problem is the lack of A/C. It got hot in there at the end of August. At least they had ice water out front to cool you off. read more

Last night was our first time at The State Room and it did not disappoint. We came about 15 minutes before our sold out concert started and there was plenty of seating and standing room available. We sat for half of the concert and stood for the rest and never once felt crowded. It didn't get "stuffy" and the A/C was going the whole time. Excellent sound and awesome atmosphere. What an AMAZING venue! I was directed here by some sweet people I met at breakfast. To make a very long story short- i flew to SLC for a 4 day visit and then was cancelled on once I landed. Bored with nothing to do, I had some highly recommend I go check out this venue. I showed up with no idea what I was getting to but ended up getting to see Puddles the Clown from America's Got Talent! His show was amazing and highly entertaining, but the venue and the staff were just as superb. You can tell they truly have a great vision for this place and it shows in the way they treat their customers and the way they seem just as happy to be their as the customers. They bring in great entertainment to a very intimate venue with amazing sound quality. Many of the people I chatted with were regulars there and love the venue. My experience here ended up being the highlight of my trip and I WILL be back! The State Room has been showcasing some great acts in downtown SLC. The acoustics are excellent, the shows start promptly at 8 pm, there's a well stocked bar in the lobby and it's across the street from The Bayou for great food before the show. I'm really psyched that the owners are working on getting a variety of national talent in here. Have seen Aimee Mann, Great Lake Swimmers, Over the Rhine, Carrie Rodriguez and a few more. The winter 2010 lineup looks strong as well. Check this place out if you like live music in a theater setting. read more

This is one of my favorite venues in Utah. It's small and intimate and the crowd seems to be more mature so there isn't any pushing and shoving. I like that you can buy a drink but it's going to cost you. I think the sound and lighting are great here. I can actually hear the singer over the instruments! The lighting isn't super crazy and distracting. There is a big disco ball that adds a little bit of movement and interest. I like that there is standing room right in front of the stage but there are also seats in the back. There are rows of church style pews and then movie theater seats behind those. It's stadium seating so you can still see the stage. That's a blessing for a shorty like me. I really like how close to the stage you can get. No metal dividers to press up against and no giant security guy blocking your view to stop people from crowd surfing. The stage is elevated but not so much that it hurts your neck to stand close and look up. The talent they get is wonderful too. I've seen some killer shows there. It seems like the bands and artists like the venue as well. They always look like they feel at home. read more

This is top three venues in Utah to see a concert. If you eliminate outdoor venues, it's probably the best venue. Unlike your typical concert venues, this place is actually pretty clean. The demographic that attends shows here, is non-violent, and calm, and there to simply enjoy the music and not start trouble. The sound quality is some of the most perfect sound I've heard live. No distortion or peaking highs, just crystal clear hits. I was very impressed and I fully intend to keep an eye on the artists they have coming to town because I enjoyed it. I've only been to The State Room once, but I was so pleased that I immediately purchased tickets to two other shows. I was supposed to go to the first show with the husband, but some bad communication on my part meant that his band was playing downtown and I had 2 tickets for a Friday night...what to do? Go to the show at The State Room of course! Since I was by myself, the general admission was great (and if you show up early enough, you can pick a seat that is pretty much perfect for band viewing and, if you're as tired as I was that night, an early-ish departure without disrupting anyone). I can't wait to see the next two bands; definitely one of my SLC favorites now. read more
