I just went to Urban Lounge for the first time with my husband and some friends for Emo Karaoke night. It was sooooo much fun! I love the intimate nature of the venue, allowing one to be pretty close to the band during the concert. I appreciate the water system they provide for attendees as well. They do have a bar, but no food (although I kind of wish concessions were an option because I was hungry )! Loved getting to attend though! read more

I went to the urban lounge on a Saturday night to see Smith and Thell (they're amazing.) it's a great place to have a more intimate experience than most other concert venues. It's a standing venue with very minimal seating and booths in the back for reservation. There is a small bar in the back. Pros: they offer free cold water in the corner. There's not a bad "seat" in the house. The tickets are super cheap. Cons: we waited an hour for the opener to come on and then another half hour between the opener and the actual band we came to see. That's a lot of time to be literally standing around just waiting. read more

My best friend and I came here to attend their "Sorry For Party Rocking" event, which featured songs from the 2000s to 2010s. The first DJ did an excellent job of letting the crowd enjoy each song and then expertly mixing it into the next track. The second DJ of the evening mixed the tracks a little bit more, but still kept us dancing until our shoes came off! We spent about 2.5 hours here, and could've gone longer if we didn't work in the morning! The bartenders are top notch, cranking out whiskey+coke, Long Island iced tea, and Moscow mules at lightning-fast speeds. Our total after roughly 8 drinks was less than $45, before tip. Super reasonably priced, especially for a nightclub. The venue itself did get more and more people coming in as the evening progressed, but that's always a good sign especially in Downtown SLC. We can't wait to return, and we highly recommend this place to anyone else considering! read more

Having moved from the DC area to Salt Lake there have certainly been some changes that have been difficult to get used to. A big one has been music venues. I haven't liked any that I've been to until last weekend when I saw a show at Urban Lounge. I love that it is small and intimate. It's not too tiny, but you definitely can't fit that many people inside, and that's just how I like it! You can reserve a booth (for the show I attended it was $30.00, I don't know if that is standard or changes). Otherwise it's pretty much just standing only. There was one table with maybe 8 chairs, and that was the only other seating I saw. I don't see this as a great issue as people generally don't want to sit at a show, although I was tempted by those booths and would definitely look into reserving one in the future. As it was, my husband and I just leaned against a wall to the side of the stage. We still had a pretty decent view, and it was nice to not have to stand for several hours. The interior isn't particularly attractive, but it's usually dark, so who cares? They do have some rad posters decorating their walls. I've heard it can get loud in there, and that makes sense given it is a smaller space, and I didn't see anything to muffle the sound. Still, it wasn't too loud for me, and I have fairly sensitive ears. Part of that may have been that I was standing off to the side instead of directly in front of the speakers. The bar was teeny, but I didn't get anything to drink so can't speak to prices or quality of drinks. It's nice you have the option, though, and there's also Rye next door, which looked quite happenin' on our way in around 8:00pm. Parking doesn't seem great (but isn't that true for all of SLC?). I saw a sign for parking on the side of the building, but the lot looked full, so we drove around the block and parked on the street. Not a big deal to walk, but I think if you got there very late or to a very busy show you might have some trouble finding a spot. Prices are ridiculously cheap. From what I can tell you're looking at $10-$20 tickets (plus a small service fee), and you just can't beat that. I'd pay that even for a so-so band just to get out and listen to some live music. This isn't the perfect venue, but for this area I'm pretty sure it will be my favorite. read more

I like the lounge. It's a smaller intimate place with free water in the back. I like that the stage is in the middle of the room so you can get more people around the bands. The sound is great from all areas of the room. I've never seen someone perform that didn't come out afterwards to mingle. I love that. The only issue is the height of the stage. It's closer to the ground compared to other venues around SLC. This has its pros and cons, but if you kick back and try to see over the crowd, it's mostly a con. read more

Urban is not quite a dive bar, but definitely not a glitzed up nightclub by any means. What can you really expect from a place that has a cigarette vending machine, you know? The shows here are the main draw for me, as I don't fancy myself much of a drinker. The bar area is quite small, but the lounge isn't all that big either, so it's all relative. Like most bars, the staff here are cool, so long as you are. Smoking section outside for those who partake in the vice. Drinks aren't too badly priced, unlike some other places in town. Overall, a very average, no frills venue. What I particularly like about the lounge though, are the shows you can see. Lots of local talent, and smaller acts. I've seen some great shows here ranging from sludge metal to laid back acoustic sets. There are a few booth type sitting areas in the back, not too far from stage, so if you get fatigued at some point in the show, these REALLY come in handy. Urban Lounge isn't going to win any awards for innovation, but if someone you like is rolling through town, you could do a lot worse venue wise. read more

Everything about this venue is quite perfect. If there was a 'half' star, I would have added it to my review of the UL. The venue is intimate, it's small, but big enough to have a good wild crowd if the band entices you to be wild. The sound was pretty good. The location is great, right in downtown and lots of parking on the streets if the garage is full. Okay lights, and decor, some tables, some seats, some bars, a good bar with ok drinks, maybe a bit on the overpriced, but still affordable and good. The venue does have a patio for smoking, and chillin if its too hot inside. Bathrooms are sketchy, and weird, but most concert venues take pride on their stage, not their bathroom, so that's chill.. I really like being able to be steps away from the band, see them play and perform and be part of it, as the energy gets transferred from band to fans. This venue can give you that little pleasure. And it's worth it. read more

My first time at Urban Lounge! I have eaten next door many times, and been able to watch the performance on TVs in Rye, but had never actually stepped foot in. Finally! An artist was in town at Urban Lounge, and it allowed me the fun stop in. After waiting in a line that moved fairly quickly, we were corralled into the darkly lite space that is Urban Lounge. Urban Lounge is definitely a smaller, more intimate concert venue. You are up close and personal with the performer, if you so choose - however, there are also a handful of tables and booths to sit at if you're lucky enough. The sound seemed to be great from where ever you place yourself. We didn't get any alcohol for our concert experience - but, both needing water, I went up to buy a water bottle for whatever the price.... and they have water containers and cups sitting right by the bar, completely free. I have yet to go to a venue that provides this service (seriously, you can't get FREE water unless it's from a sketchy water fountain - no thank you), and it immediately made Urban one of my favorite in Salt Lake. I will look forward to any future concerts here! It's close, convenient, and a fun location. read more

Urban Lounge is a small music venue that mostly caters to local bands but books a fair amount of national touring acts too. With a large stage, a full, well-stocked bar and plenty of space the Urban Lounge is a pretty decent venue. Friday and Saturday nights tend to be especially crowded, almost regardless of the bands performing. Weeknights are sometimes more tame. They recently re-modeled much of the Urban Lounge and the new updates gave the venue a much needed face-lift. read more

I particularly enjoy music clubs that have no pretension and invites bands that are unique and cutting edge. For a 10 buck cover charge on a week night, I listened to two bands that played almost exclusively for me. There were about ten folks in the entire joint! One band was great, with a fascinating ethereal sound. The other band was ka ka, but so what. It's music, and an aural experience. The employees were friendly and down to earth. The drinks could be better, but it is Utah where alcohol doesn't always flow. All in all, SLC is fortunate to have the Urban Lounge and I will be back often. I've had the fortune to have experienced many variations of the Urban Lounge over the past decade, and throughout it all it still stands out to me as one of the best 21+ music venues in SLC. Yes, there are other venues with better qualities (soundsystem and alcohol selection being two obvious ones), but where the Urban Lounge excels is in the variety of artists they bring, typically low ticket costs, and an intimate atmosphere that allows one to really get into the show they're experiencing. I've seen everything from Sleigh Bells to the Bronx to Sea Wolf at the Lounge and every time it's been a fantastic show with great service. Best advice I could give is: a) if you have a problem with loud music, bring earplugs. There isn't an inch of carpet in the place so loud music is even louder bouncing off of the concrete floors. B) arrive early if you want to sit down for a show. It gets packed for big shows and most people tend to stand. C) treat the bartenders well. It can get busy at the bar but if you treat the bartenders well they'll treat you well in return - often times remembering what drinks you're liking over the night (which helps when you're using hand signals to order due to the loud music). All in all the Lounge is flawed and not perfect, but the older I get the more it has become one of the only bar/venues I will go to as there just isn't pretense here. Yes, there are typical hipsters and snooty people that go to the lounge (just like any bar in SLC), but overall it's a low key crowd and great place to have fun while checking out a variety of local and national bands. read more

Was in there with my girlfriends and you think it would it would be fine taking shots from the bar but it seemed to be a problem for us that night. Not Awesome Urban Lounge tries to hard to be urban and not enough at being a lounge. The place is always, Always, ALWAYS dirty. Unless the band brings their own sound guy be prepared to go deaf. The shows start late enough that the only people who go are those who don't have or don't care about their jobs. The lounge has a nasty habit of booking sometimes 3 or 4 bands in a night which means you won't see the headliner to sometimes as late as 11:30. The only reason Urban is still in business is because all of the other 500-1500 person venues in the area are worse than this dump. Normally, this places is SO not my hang. Lately, I am changing my opinion. The crowd at Urban is way too hipster for me and half the time I people watch while sipping a beverage and laugh on the inside about how much these people care. I don't think I even need to get into great detail here, you guys get it. They same way I walk into an Urban Outfitters and feel really embarrassed for all the hipster couples there who think everyone in the store is only paying attention/noticing them because... their hip. THAT is the same crowd you find at Urban. Oh well. WE DON'T GO FOR THE CROWD RIGHT? Right. We go to hear heart stopping, stomach turning, soul wrenching, Earbud Rattling music from artists we love like The Devil Whale (personal local favorite) and even Toro y Moi and The Submarines. That is a small list of the shows I will be seeing/have seen at Urban so far this year. Large open venue with reasonable prices. Booths to sit at and relax with friends before the show starts, a nice big fully stocked bar, more seating around what I consider a dance floor in front of the stage and the gnarliest woman's restroom you'll ever hover in! The stage is a great size and placed very well inside the venue. While the sound quality could be better I feel the speaker placement is SO much better than other venues I've been too. It doesn't matter where I stand, I get the same show as everyone else. Visit/support your local bands, visit your favorite national artists and leave with happy ringing earbuds. read more

It is the over 21 big brother of Kilby Court. **Special note to non-locals: Urban is a place to see live music. Do not attempt to hang here when there is no music.** Talent: as Yuri mentioned, Urban Lounge gets some really amazing bands. Upcoming shows worth mentioning--Quasi, Xiu Xiu, Dead Meadow, Fresh & Only's, Mono, Brian Jonestown Massacre. If you like indy/blog music then this is one of the top 3 spots in town. Atmosphere: it's basically a rectangle with a handful of booths and tables/chairs. There is a small dancefloor with a metal rail around it (to lean or sit on). The one bar is in the corner, and there is a patio out back to smoke. It feels like a venue, not a place (if that makes sense). The lack of atmosphere is an advantage IMHO. You can see the band from pretty much anywhere in the entire place. Acoustics: the sound is very good. It feels nice & loud without being ear splitting. Urban really seems to give a crap about the sound mix. Bar: they've got 6 or 8 beers on tap--some locals and a few domestics. They keep a good selection of imports and specialties in bottles ($5 for a Stella). Everyone will find something to like. The mixed drinks are fine. Bathrooms: Fairly clean and easy to spot when wasted. You don't want to take the Browns to the Superbowl here though! Go home for that shit. Cool note: Urban is small enough that you can hang out with the band . There's not backstage dressing room to hide them away! There's nothing cooler than having a beer with the drummer! read more

The number one reason to go to the Urban Lounge is because you really, really, really want to see a live performance that you won't see anywhere else. The number two reason? Can't think of one. Unless you like going to sweat lodges. Let the rant begin! Temperature...WAY too effin hot. The air coming in from the "swamp coolers" is not even cooled, it's just the air from outside. Talk about cheap, uncaring ownership. Maybe they want to force you to buy drinks, which I'd buy plenty of, but last night it was so hot and uncomfy I couldn't imagine drinking alcohol. Ah, switch to Coke? Don't do it. The one we ordered tasted like it was from one of those bottles that's been sitting in someone's garage for 10 years, at best. Wanna go outside? Sure, you can do that, but only if you subject yourself to the undersized smokestack of a patio. You're not allowed to leave and come back in...even though the bar has plenty of "buddies" you can see doing exactly that all night. To make things worse, they're big, fat liar-mouths! Advertised showtimes: doors open at 8:30. Show ENDS at 11. Typically their headliners don't even start until 10:30-11. To be honest, it really sucks to stand for 4 hours in the sweltering heat with a bunch of sweaty people, nothing decent to drink, absolutely no munchies, no way to escape, and to make it all worse...the sound guys are run-of-the-mill non-union guys (no, i'm not a union sound guy) that just screw it up royally over and over and over to the point that the artists almost always get vocally pissed off. Last night's headliner couldn't get his mic stand to stay put, and after several attempts he got into the mic and told the ownership that he "couldn't deal with the piece of sh*t mic stand. I mean really, how are you supposed to have a show without an effin mic stand that works. Without the voice, you don't have the band." To prove that I'm not a whiner, Peter Murphy was absolutely fantastic and exceeded expectations. His band was spot-on, and the performance was, well, awesome. (when the sound guys got it together.) To be completely honest, the next time I wanna see a performance at the Urban Lounge, I'll look for the next closest city, book a flight and a hotel, and actually have a decent experience. This town is ripe for a better venue. I hope we're not running off performers by giving them, and their loyal fans, bad to awful experiences. read more

I've been to this place a few times. It's not terrible, but it's not great. The crowd seems to always be pretentious hipsters who just turned 21. The last time I went there, there was water dripping from the ceiling onto our table, and we had to keep moving our purses around to avoid the pool of dirty water. I saw The Presets there a long time ago, and the sound kept going out - they would just be getting into a song, and the music would suddenly stop. I thought the band was going to walk out, they were obviously getting really pissed off. The bartenders are always nice, though. If you're a hipster, you would probably like this place, but I usually avoid it unless there's a really good band playing. read more

I have a love/hate relationship with the Urban Lounge. See, on one hand, this is the place that all those annoying little indie bands/underground hip-hop acts that I love come to play for really cheap. So I love that this place gets all the cool bands, and it doesn't hurt that it's not too far from my house. On the other hand, the shows start way too late (I guess it's something about the restaurant next door? I don't know), to the point that if I have to work a day shift the next day, I have to decided if the band I want to see is really worth that extreme tiredness the next day. And yes, I am lame enough that I've skipped shows because I wanted the extra sleep. Also, the sound is often horrible. In a place that small, you don't need to be cranking up the sound to eleven every single time, especially if the place is only half full. Oh, but it's so nice when it's a weeknight show and it's not packed to the gills and you can enjoy some really awesome band in a really intimate setting. That's the good stuff. And for that, Urban Lounge, I am thankful for you, even with your flaws. read more

It is right around the corner from my apartment so maybe I'm biased but it is a small little place that has some pretty amazing acts come through and you can be front and center without much hassle. It's dark, hipster, and the sound is a little harsh but it is always a good time! The only thing that saved this review was the great music shows I've seen here. They have a dubstep night once a month with DJ Loomis- who plays reggae dub. The drinks are watered down, over priced and the bar service is extremely sub par. I usually show up early (around 9pm) and even before the crowd shows up the bathroom is more disgusting than a portapotty. The last time I was there the hallway going to the patio had cages stacked to the roof and the whole pace reeked like animals. There was a time where one of the female bartenders had blood dripping from her eye, wiped it with her hand and made a drink, garnish and all. Patio is okay and has seating for large groups. Great atmosphere! It was my first time here! I came to see Kishi Bashi and the experience was phenomenal! The lighting and sound were good and I loved being close to the stage. The venue is small so you will be bumping elbows with strangers. Some show goers are sly and will slowly tip toe their way in front of you, so be alert and never give up your hard earned spot! The only thing that irked me was the long wait outside the venue but there was another show before so I guess they had to clean up or it was running longer than expected. After standing in line for an hour and then patiently waiting another hour indoors for the music to begin, I was completely worn out by 11pm! But K's lively music kept me going! Overall, it's a good venue to enjoy your favorite artists! read more
