Statehouse Beef Wellington Signature Roast Chicken
    Jenny J.

It was my first time trying The Statehouse, located inside The Edgewater Hotel. The views of the lake from the restaurant was beautiful! The staff was accomodating as well. In terms of the food, I thought that the quality could have been better for the price. But it was still pretty good, nonetheless. I enjoyed the mashed potatoes the most, haha. I would say my biggest gripe is with the beef wellington. The meat was a bit difficult to cut through, and the overall dish lacked a lot of flavor. I thought the roast chicken was better, but still pretty plain for what it is. We also ordered some cheese curds and calamari, but again, I would say the price doesn't really match up with the quality in my opinion. If you're looking for a nice place to eat dinner for a special occasion, the ambiance truly is unbeatable (: The parking is in a garage and there is parking validation.

Absolutely beautiful restaurant & not a bad view of the lake from any seat. When you walk in from the street, you are already on the floor with the restaurant (floor 7) just walk to the back of the hotel towards the water. First time to Wisconsin, so had to get the cheese curds! They were very good! We went for lunch and got the blackened salmon and vegetables; it was incredible & perfectly seasoned. One tip, it does not come with a side, even though the menu says it does. I ordered a side salad and it was just mixed greens & balsamic. I asked to add tomatoes, cheese and onion and they were very gracious and did with no problem. The meal and service was perfect. And for dessert ... skillet cookie! YUM!!! Don't question it, just get it!!

This is a beautiful spot on the lake to grab brunch or dinner. The restaurant is inside The Edgewater Hotel and the service was wonderful! Highly recommend reservations! We were there for brunch and enjoyed. Will be back!

If you need one reason to visit the Statehouse, let it be the absolutely striking view of Lake Mendota. The spacious dining room boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, a genius decision by whomever made it. The elegance of the Edgewater's rich history -- having been built in 1948 -- spills over into the restaurant, with modern elevated decor sprinkled throughout. The Statehouse's menu features trendy favorites as well as fine dining staples. I highly recommend the Fried Cheese Curds and the Beef Wellington. My only critiques come down to cook time on a couple of dishes -- the potatoes in the pork belly appetizer were undercooked and the salmon was slightly overcooked, just a tad dry. Small things to complain about, I know. But everything counts for a restaurant of this caliber... and this price tag. (You will pay a very large, pretty penny.) The servers were attentive and knowledgeable, helping with wine pairings and recommendations on the menu. Overall, I was treated to a decidedly pleasurable experience at the Statehouse and I will return when back in Madison.

Great ambiance. Wait staff was excellent and timely. The food was delicious. My salmon was perfectly cooked and the beet salad was very unique with multitude of flavors. Their cocktails were delicious as well.

Enjoyed brunch and a beautiful view! I know they do a brunch buffet on certain holidays, ie, mother day. However I do wish it was a once a month Sunday buffet brunch :) Service was excellent and food was delicious!

The Statehouse is likely one of the best hotel restaurants I've ever been to. You absolutely cannot beat the views, especially at Sunset. You will get a great view wherever you sit and sometimes in the summer the Edgewater has live music. We started with the charcuterie board and brussels sprouts and cauliflower. The brussels sprouts and cauliflower were amazing, perfectly crispy, and the lemon aioli sauce was an amazing contrast. However, the charcuterie board was really disappointing, especially for a contemporary American restaurant in Wisconsin. The combination of cheese and one meat selection selection along with random fruits were not balanced whatsoever. The entrées, however were amazing, the burger was classic and perfectly done. The roasted chicken was my favorite, perfectly seasoned and simple. Drinks were great too, especially the Bloody Mary.

Stopped in for brunch. The service was great, our orders were accurate, and the view was fantastic. The broccoli and swiss cheese omelette was really good, light and flavorful. The fresh vegetable scramble was great too! It had a great mix of fresh veggies. The only thing that would have made it better is if their latte machine was working.

Sunday brunches are very good. Made to order from the menu. So everything is hot and fresh. Not a buffet type of brunch.

Our waiter gave us great tips in navigating the menu and experiencing the variety - and it could not have been a more special experience celebrating my brother's 60th birthday with my 91 years old dad. They have 3 Old Fashion options - we tried 2 and they were both rock solid. The ravioli and trout almandine are savory entrees that didn't disappoint. The baked potato is an innovative cloud pleaser but highly recommend sharing. And don't sleep on the onion soup - I've never experienced anything like it. The smell that emanates when you first pierce the creamy foam layer will make you say 'whoa.' Will definitely return.

The restaurant was beautiful and the service was amazing. I appreciated that our waitress was very knowledgeable about the dishes on the menu and what ingredients they contained, which is perfect for anyone with allergies or dietary restrictions (like myself). We were seated near the open kitchen which also added to the dining experience. I tried: - Scallop toast - I really enjoyed this. It was mild, not fishy tasting at all, and the brioche was toasted very well. I'm not a huge seafood person aside from sushi and poke, and had never had scallops before, so I was not expecting to like it as much as I did. - Ricotta Raviolini - I was not a huge fan of this, which was especially disappoint since it was my main entree / the most expensive on this list. It was essentially a folded sheet of pasta with a tiny bit of ricotta, topped with barely cooked asparagus and snap peas. The menu also lists lemon infused olive oil, but I didn't taste that at all. The parts of the raviolini with a good amount of ricotta were delicious, but the dish overall was bland and tasted like raw asparagus and peas. My friends also tried it and none of them liked it either. - Baked Potato with The Works - super simple and perfectly executed. It comes with bacon, which we got on the side since I don't eat red meat. Potato was fluffy and salted perfectly, with a good amount of other toppings. My friends who do eat bacon said it tasted more like ham than bacon, and they actually preferred the potato without it. - Dark Chocolate Bread Pudding - Loved it. I love bread pudding and chocolate pudding, but never thought to combine the two. It was delicious - soft, not super sweet, and great portion size. I would recommend sharing, it's pretty rich which can be overwhelming at a certain point. - Flightless Bird mocktail - this was one of the best mocktails I've tried. It has a black tea base but tasted more like a regular cocktail without the alcohol burn rather than tea. Everyone at the table enjoyed trying it too. Despite the raviolini being a miss, the rest of the food, service, and ambiance made this such a wonderful dining experience that I can't wait to come back and try more.

They come with ranch and hot honey, and apparently they recently won best cheese curd at the cheese curd crawl. They were super tasty. Well seasoned, perfectly fried, and kind of chewy. I am not on the hot honey frenzy train, but I tried it and thought it paired well, just wasn't for me. The ranch was tasty though. Even the happy hour portion was hefty and I couldn't put down half. It is not. It is rock candy flavored with agave. It was sweeter than my wife's rail Margarita on the rocks with salt. Their French onion soup is arguably the worst I've ever had. Flavorless. Slightly warmer than room temperature and the cheese was barely melted yet alone browned. Their appetizer of pork belly Fundido was the best option of the evening. Flavorful delicious and filling it was fantastic. However, the $40 pork chop entrée was unpalatable. Describe as a pork chop topped with a strawberry barbecue sauce. The sauce had no strawberry flavor. The pork chop can hardly be described as a grilled pork chop and is better described as a salt brine soaked Virginia ham warmed topped with watered down sweet baby rays barbecue sauce. Honestly. You could take this cut of meat, put it in a wooden box in the woods and use it as a salt lick stand during deer season. It was disgusting as much as it was dehydrating. The accompanying mac and cheese was basically Kraft dinner topped with panko. The highlight was the summer squash and that's saying a lot as it was nothing special and for crying out loud-it's squash. My wife and I could not stomach finishing more than half the entree between us and left. I repeat. The servers at the bar were great. But nearly everything brought in front of us disappointed.

The sangria is strong but you won't know it until you stand up. We started with the cheese puppies and they had a fantastic pull to them. Some of the best version of cheese curds I've had in a while. My husband and I both had salads and the bowl was too small for the salad but it was a decent salad I do wish the cheese was sprinkled on top as it ended up going to the bottom of the bowl. For an entree I had steak frites. Fries were solid and the cooking of the steak was good with the charcoal but it didn't have much flavor. The chard on the side was also good considering I've never had it. For dessert we had the valentine special chocolate cake and again it was good but nothing super special. We didn't stick around the bar too long but enough to get a winning pull tab. I would come back for the bar tenders they seemed chill.

When I mentioned I have celiac disease, he confidently assured me they could absolutely accommodate it, which immediately gave me peace of mind. I ordered a strawberry spritz and we shared the gluten-free donuts to start. A huge win for the celiac community is that they have a dedicated fryer, so we also safely shared the truffle fries. For our main entrees, I had the fried rice which was excellent. My husband ordered the skirt steak hash with gluten-free toast and loved it, though it is worth noting for others that it packs quite a lot of spice. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable and attentive regarding the allergy protocols. The overall service ran a little slow, but it was understandable given how slammed they were for the Sunday rush. As an added bonus, the restaurant has its own parking lot, making the logistics seamless.
