I am not sure what is up with the bad reviews. I went there a couple of weeks ago and had a great brunch here. First of all, the views are amazing. It was a pretty cruddy day, but I could still see the awesome view of the lake. The place also seemed a little upscale and fancy. As for the food, it was pretty good. I went with the country fried steak benedict which I haven't seen anywhere else. I also went with the traditional bloody mary which was good too. I like to see interesting local places do well. It makes me want to stay at this hotel and wine and dine! I will probably be back for dinner! read more

Every seat has a beautiful lake view. The tables are situated far enough apart for social distancing. We both had the Wisconsin Fish Fry, available everyday not just Friday. The two huge pieces of cod are heavily battered but truly delicious. The coleslaw was a bit runny but really tasty. The menu said it and also included rye bread which didn't appear with our original plates but the server was quick to retrieve the bread upon request. What I order this dish again at the State House? YES. This restaurant would be awesome place to bring an out-of-state person to try true Wisconsin dishes. read more

Ate here for a solo dinner while attending a meeting. The ambiance and view by the window was a vision of water heaven. Absolutely stunning. I was wearing a suit jacket as it was very cold inside. In fact I was freezing as the vents are directed toward the table. So let's talk about the service: I can't say that the waiters are attentive. In fact it took awhile for someone to come over to my table and I witnessed other new table guests experiencing the same thing. Water was poured, but I was surprised by having no complimentary bread offered. I ordered a beer with high % alcohol content that should have warmed me up but that frigid air kept me to a slow sip. Oh, this took some time to arrive also. Next: My starter which was supposed to be grilled octopus arrived already dissected totaling about a 2 inch tentacle. Those diagonal cuts can really fool the eye, but I wasn't impressed with the texture or flavor of the entire plate. If you are a true lover of seafood and enjoy food that will make your taste buds dance, then skip this dish. The Main Dish: I ordered the New York Strip Steak, but looked like I received only a portion of it. It wasn't bad, but also not memorable. Dessert: I went with the Cookie in the Skillet. The chilled smoked trout dip appetizer was fantastic. I also enjoyed their fox heritage pork chop entree. My husbands beef brisket sandwich exceeded expectations. We had reservations but still had to wait a while for our table even though the restaurant was pretty empty at around 8 PM on Friday night. The cocktail I had was way too sugary and wish I had sent it back. The server was great and knew the menu well. The ambiance was nice and romantic. read more

I tried the Statehouse during winter restaurant week this year. The fixed menu offerings were appealing though not quite up to the $40 menu pricing, as seems to be the case more recently with restaurant week. This makes me somewhat hesitant to try the regular menu, but there certainly were some enticing dishes on it so I most likely won't pass up the opportunity to give it another try. It's a cool space - very open and an expansive bank of windows overlooking the lake. Validated underground parking. Feels like a great place to have an after work or dinner drink that feels just a little out of the way but is right in the thick of the downtown area. The first course salad was absolutely outstanding and the star of the evening. Mizuna lettuce, candied pecans, confi Anjou pear....Beautiful flavors, contrasting textures, and good to the very last drop of clementine vinaigrette. Next was the half roasted Cornish hen with truffle potatoes and tri-colored baby carrots. The carrots were cooked well with a gentle bite and I personally would have appreciated just 1-2 more (I believe there were 2 on the dish). The lemon grass au jus served with the chicken was very flavorful and it was a tasty dish in general, and my main issue was simply how much work it was to deconstruct the chicken. Lots of work for small bites! Lastly we chose the "biscotti brûlée" which I did not glean from the description was simply a piece of biscotti. This was glazed with vanilla cream and mixed berries - and your only option was to ask for a steak knife and try to cut it or pick it up with your hands and have a giant mess on your fingers. Big fail for a nicer restaurant in my opinion. I had envisioned a creme brûlée with biscotti crumbs which fits every kind of dining out scenario you can have (date, work dinner, etc - it would have been quite something to see two people on a first date dive into this particular dish!). So...when I look at the regular menu and approximate the equivalent dishes ($17 for the salad, $31 for the chicken and then a piece of doctored up biscotti) I suppose the $40 price tag seems like a bit of a deal, but I think that overall the dishes fell short of the price and wonder if that may be the case for some of the other menu options as well. I'll always pay $$$ for good food and there are plenty of options in Madison where this is never in question. read more

Went there for lunch. Did not have a reservation but was able to be seated at a table by the windows right away. Very nice ambience. Large windows with an amazing view of the lake. Friendly service. We've dined at the Statehouse in the past and it was always good. But last night the food was 'off.' We started with the lobster bisque. The soup was too thick ( e.g.could stand up a spoon in it), and had no pieces of lobster. Plus, lobster bisque generally has a tad of sherry but this soup had a dollop of orange oil on the top. Strange and not tasty. My husband had the walleye fish which came deep fried and almost burnt. Generally, the server will say how the fish is prepared. I guess our fault for not asking...Our server was kind, but looked like she may have been in high school? (other employees had to serve the booze). So she may have been inexperienced. My salmon was mushy and the asparagus way over cooked. Despite the food, the ambience is lovely and the staff very attentive. For the price it was disappointing. read more

This was my first time visiting The Statehouse with my fiancé. Our reservation was for 6:45PM, and we didn't get seated until around 7:20PM. I ordered the filet (market price on the menu) and my fiancé ordered the brisket sandwich. The filet was OK, not great, and it was $64, which I thought was high for the quality of the meal. I would not order it again. The brisket was dry and similar to jerky, my fiancé said it was terrible. I would also like to note, there were 5 bartenders working the bar, and we only saw 2 waitresses in the restaurant. The service was very slow and the restaurant was understaffed. read more

My husband and I had dinner here after a night of ice skating, and it was wonderful! I hadn't been to The Edgewater since before it had been renovated, so it was shocking to see just how beautiful it really is! We each had some delicious wine, and toasted to our date night. I ordered the garganelli pasta, and it was superb - with a delicious hint of garlic, the sauce was just right. My husband enjoyed his pork chop, and I even made him give me a taste, which is rare because I'm not a big pork fan. This pork chop was fabulous! We split the cookie skillet for dessert, because of course we did! Delicious! We will definitely be back. read more

Food was delicious and server was very knowledgeable and sweet. Gave great recommendations and provided excellent service. We went for a birthday celebration. The strawberry cheesecake dessert given to celebrate the birthday was so delicious. Ambiance at sunset was so pretty and relaxing. Would be a great location for a date night or celebration. Highly recommend requesting a window table with a reservation before arriving. read more

The Statehouse is one of those places you take friends and relatives when they're in town. The views are stunning and the food is tasty. But truly, the views could sell this place even if the food was sub par! I got the cheese curds, which were yummy but I would have preferred them served a bit warmer. I got the peach tea cocktail, which was excellent (and dangerous!) because it tasted just like peach tea. My husband got the burger, and he said it was really good. I got the lamb rack, and I cannot talk this up enough. So tender, so delicious. Definitely a must try on my list! read more

Statehouse regular here! This is the best kept gem in all of Madison. Beautiful ambiance overlooking the lake (great for cocktails and pictures before dinner), quiet, and very clean/elegant. The menu is diverse in both flavor and pricing, making it a great place to go with a group of friends. The have incredible seasonal cocktails as well! I have been with my 11 other friends on multiple occasions (brunch and dinner), my family, and my boyfriend. In all cases, they have been attentive and accommodating. The only thing holding me back from 5 stars is the extremely slow food service - no matter if I was in a 12 person party or just me and my boyfriend, it was a 2-2.5 hour meal. Very nice view of the lake, very pretty boat-like decor and amazing natural lighting beams through the large windows. The service was a little spotty but nothing to really complain about. We ordered the Porchetta which was very good! Meat was nice and juicy which seaped into the toasted bun and the arugula added a nice flavor to it! Was a fan! I had dinner and brunch here. The cheese curd and market greens salad were good. The salmon was overcooked and dry. I got the avocado toast for brunch. The egg was room temperature and there wasn't much avocado on the avocado toast which was odd, but the overall flavor and bread was good. Serice was iffy- the coffees were cold and we had to get up to ask for water refills. The Views were really pretty. read more

alright so I'm just gonna start this review by saying there's not a lot of restaurant choices in Madison Wisconsin. The pickins were slim so we opted for Statehouse because their cocktails looked yummy. Upon arrival they sat us right away, and you could tell it was one of the nicer establishments. The service was pretty meh but also I understand they seemed pretty busy. Our waiter Louis was very nice, just seemed like they were short staffed or maybe we were under dressed so they didn't pay that much attention to us but whatever we got the beet salad, truffle fries, cheese curds, chicken, pasta, cheese burger and chicken sandwich. the food was pretty good, but honestly the blood orange margarita stole the show. truffle fries were light and so crunchy and delicious, and the beet salad was the perfect mix of sweet, and savory. read more

So this review is just about the lack of service at the Statehouse. We never actually ate there. We had reservations at 7:00pm but wanted to come early to have a drink at the bar. We arrived and tried to get a drink. After waiting 10 minutes at one end of the bar, I moved to the center of the bar where the bartenders seemed to be more active. After waiting another 15 minutes and watching the bartenders actively serve other patrons at the bar right next to where we were standing, I spoke to the bartender and asked for some service. He said they didn't have any cocktail service in bar and that we would have to wait until he got time. I told him we'd been waiting 25 minutes. He said you'll have to wait a little longer. Then he preceded to empty the dishwasher at the bar. A few minutes later another patron came up to the bar and the other bartender asked what they would like. At that point I interrupted and said we'd been waiting 25 minutes. She said he'd been waiting too. At that point we left the bar. We went to the host and asked to be seated. We had reservations for 7:00 and it was only 6:30. He said we'd be seated at 7:00 and we could have a drink at the bar. I laughed and said that we'd been waiting 25+ minutes and weren't going back in the bar. He said the bar didn't have cocktail service and it might be a while. At that point I told him to cancel the reservation and that we were leaving. To the management of the Statehouse: I spent my $150 somewhere else. I am writing this review and I'll tell anyone who asks about my experience. read more

This place has ok service, and the staff are relatively friendly. The restaurant itself has great ambiance, and is located inside the Edgewater Hotel. However, most of the pros are negated by the poor quality of their food. Initially, the food was cold. It was not warm, but cold. So, we asked the waitress Kristina, who was very nice, to have our steaks heated. Fifteen minutes later she comes back with the plates...The steaks were lukewarm this time. The rest of the sides were scorched, as you can see in the pic attached to this review. One member of our party ordered their steak well done. But, that steak was pink inside, even after the reheating session. Conclusion: This restaurant needs a new cook. The current cook's incompetence is impacting the entire image of this place. The waitstaff tried to be nice though, so they get 2 stars. read more

Beautiful hotel with the worst restaurant and waitstaff. Sat at a table, no waiter. Moved to the bar and met the most rude bartender ever. He started announcing last call an hour before closing and refusing service. The rooms are well appointed. The hotel is beautiful and worth the premium charged. The wait staff and bartender are egregious and should be let go. I've never seem anything like it and I travel alot. The restaurant staff, especially the bartender, want you to know they hate their job and they work hard to make sure you know this. Long story short, find another hotel. This one isn't worth the price. They don't understand service. read more

Party of five and the food came out cold. Taste wasn't great either. My sister got the Augie burger and referred to it as a Big Mac but the McDonald's version was better than this joint. Save your money and go elsewhere, super tight packed space and we couldn't hear the person sitting next to you, much less the person across the table. Disappointing time and will not be returning. I'm giving it one star because the appetizers weren't too bad, personal favorite was the Brussels sprouts. read more

Hello. I travel for a living. And I love buffalo wings. I order it whenever I can. This was the worst wings in any state. It was Over spiced, so red that your fingers turn red. Sometimes it's I good thing. But this was over kill. Wing normally comes with ranch or if you like blue cheese dressing. Oh no. They try to be too fancy and they put blue cheese crumble on it. A very Bad mix. I got 6 wings. Only can tolerate 2. Oh plus add $2 if you want carrots and celery. It's normally standard. Went here for brunch on a Sunday. The menu is seemed kind of limited, but what there was was good. The prices are also a little high, but you're paying for the view which is incredible. Looking out over the water for brunch was great. I ordered the omelette, which I thought was strange that there was only one on the menu. However, the have a list of ingredients with it and you can pick and choose which ones you want. This is a great way to have omelettes on the menu!! It came with toast and hash browns. With the toast, they give you a little jar of jelly; a little more elevated than the packets at most restaurants. The hash browns were also unique in that the were little discs. Everything tasted good, my one complaint was that they didn't have any mustard that I could dip my hashbrowns in. My friend ordered the lobster benedict. He said there were large chunks of lobster with pretty good flavor. It was very creamy though, so if you not a fan, maybe ask for the hollandaise on the side. Another friend ordered the corned beef hash and a bloody mary. The bloody mary was pretty standard and the corned beef hash was eaten up pretty quick. Overall, the food was good, but I think I could find easily comparable for a cheaper price. read more

We ate dinner last night at The Statehouse and it was great! We started with the cheese curds and they were excellent, they were very fresh. We then had the crispy chicken and the salmon, both of those were good. The celery purée with the salmon was quite strange, but others may like it more. We just stayed at The Edgewater on Saturday. The hotel is quiet . We had room service from the Statehouse for our family for dinner. My wife and I had the prime rib . We had it rare, I found it very good with just enough of those naughty but delicious fatty bits and the real hero was the au jus. It had a bit of wine in it and I love that. It came with Brussel sprouts, which were actually done to perfection , seriously. I got truffle fries as a sub for the baked, up charge but worth it. Aioli is my downfall. Also got the mushroom side, also very worth it. Just do it! Had the cheese curds for app, and those were excellent. My son had a burger which he ate without complaining, so that's a win! And his gf had the Mac n cheese and b sprouts. Food arrived quick and hot in bio degradable single use containers. The only thing I minded was the lack of actual flatware. I get the Covid thing but if it's cleaned and wrapped, a good stake need not suffer plastic flatware. Prices were a bit more than average but really, not that bad for a high end hotel. I did take a moment to walk through the restaurant the next AM. Seems really beautiful overlooking the lake and with in season outdoor patio dining. Can't vouch for the service but the guy who delivered my food was cool and the staff I met the next day were very pleasant . If your going to have a good dinner in Madison, consider The Statehouse. And if you can swing it, stay at the hotel and do room service and enjoy the view. I could see in the summer sitting out there with the breeze . read more

Had the absolutely most incredible Thanksgiving Dinner here on Thanksgiving day... in 2020! We had just flown into town & were too exhausted to cook dinner at home. They had all of our favorites and there was so much food that we even took home a bunch of left overs. The staff was very kind and we definitely plan on coming back. We were stuffed! The turkey was moist (yes I said it) and delicious. The sweet potato was sweet, soft, and buttery. The mashed potatoes were smooth and yummy. The bread had some herb salt on it that was delicious. The gravy was plenty good on everything, oh and the stuffing was excellent. There were also roasted Brussels spouts, cauliflower, & broccoli which was also good (and I don't usually like those). If I could make reservations for Thanksgiving 2021 I totally would!!! Thank you for being open on Thanksgiving, having a spot for us, and thoroughly making our day! read more

Celebrated my birthday with weekend brunch at The Statehouse at the Edgewater Hotel. Pulled our boat up to the piers on Lake Mendota, got a table on their outdoor patio with an excellent view. I was eligible for a free birthday glass of champagne, but since I'm pregnant I had to settle for a mocktail. The bloody marys are overpriced for the size of the drink, they should really come in a pint glass, not a wine glass. First off, the location and view are amazing. You can't go wrong there. And don't forget they validate parking, so that's a real bonus. Overall it was a good experience for a Friday night. The food was quite tasty, and the service was reasonable. The complaint came with what I like to call "Pacing" - for instance, we ordered drinks and an appetizer. The appetizer came super quick, and we were almost done before the drinks came. Salads came right after, and entrees came as they were clearing salads. So while I can appreciate the promptness of the kitchen, it almost felt like they were trying to turn our table quickly and we had little time to enjoy the view and the ambiance. The place was about 40% full at the time, so there was no need to rush. The food was fantastic though, just a little timing issues. I wouldn't hesitate to return, and with the crisis of staffing the restaurant industry, I can understand the struggle. read more

Not the best experience. Wrote on my reservation that I was celebrating a birthday, and then called in a few days before to let them know. Wanted to make it a surprise for my husband and got nothing. Then after waiting 20 mins to pay the check I asked if he could get a slice of cake to go, as we were celebrating a birthday. Of course I got charged for it as well and had to take it home and celebrate. A let down,to say the least. Don't think I would go ever go back as it was nothing special. I just felt like we were treated at a mediocre level and saw others around us being attended to. Thought when I'd mention that we were celebrating a birthday, the waiter would compliment the to go piece of cake but he just added it on. Prices are high for low service, I would suggest park side, Kavanaugh's Esquire Club, or park side over this. read more
