The Steven Kent winery tasting room is located in a warehouse area of Livermore with several other wineries in the same area. Before visiting that area, I wasn't sure that I would enjoy it. But I really did like the closeness of the wineries to each other and the synergy that all of these tasting rooms generated. Back to Steven Kent. The Cab Francs were amazing! I could have taken home multiples of each one of those wines. If you are a fan of cabernet franc, you really want to stop here and taste the wines. The tasting room staff were extremely knowledgeable about the wine and the winery and the wine makers. I highly recommend trying Steven Kent Winery. read more

I have a yearly Livermore wine passport and decided to stop here on a quiet weekend day afternoon during the holidays. The place is easy to find and there is plenty of seating inside and out. I was the only one there at the time and the hostess was prompt in talking to me and getting me settled. I wanted to sit inside not only because it was cold but the free wifi is better inside. They have a restroom inside. For passport holders, they don't have the usual tasting but a flight of cab franc aged in various elementals - wood, cement, stainless steel and a combination of all - aged in all the other three. The combination was my favorite! The pours were quite generous and I could not finish them all. The hostess was attentive and knowledgeable. Only downside is that there is limited parking and on a busy day, you have to go around the block to park and it's not convenient. I will go back! read more

We went to the tasting room and not the winery. We made reservation. The tasting room can fit about 40ppl with a back room for the club members. Upon entrance, we checked in and were greeted with some sparkling wine for each of us to enjoy. We were walked to our table and provided the menu. You can do a la carte wine order or do the tasting. We were 3 couples and as it's our first time, we did both tastings for each couple to enjoy 7-8 different wines. On the 2nd tasting, the pourers provided new wine glasses. That's so appreciated. Great service and attentive pourers. Not the best wine we've tasted but good and we enjoyed the tastings together. There's one unisex clean bathroom. I definitely recommend the Lola and Alberino if you like white wine. For reds, they are known for their cabs but their cab franc is the up and coming. Their staff has always been so welcoming and friendly. Ruth always brings a smile when we go in to pick up wine and is also so knowledgeable about what releases are out and what's in the current allocations for members. Also shout out to VJ the prior Somm, although he is no longer with the staff he is surely missed!!! If you are coming to Livermore, I beg of you...start here. There's a lot of great and good wine in Livermore but this is the best. Drink it now, age it, do both. One thing to be admired about SKW is that they do everything they do well because they choose to not do everything. It's a temple of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and, the pinnacle, the Lineage Bordeaux Blend. There are others...Barbera, Merlot come to mind...and they're great. But while other wineries feel great pressure to put out wines they're not good at or don't have passion for simply to have a "full menu" out of fear of missing out on a segment of the wine-buying population, Steven Kent chooses to not be all things to all people. Steven Kent Mirassou is a 6th (!) generation winemaker making one of his assistant winemakers (his son Aidan) the 7th generation. Go Google 6th or 7th generation California winemakers. If anyone comes up but them, it's a lie. Steven is an affable, passionate and literary man, publishing his first book a year or so ago (if you love wine and/or great writing, check it out...it's called Lineage and is sold by a soul crushing online retailer near you or through the SKW website which is soul enriching) and it tells his story nicely. Oh. The wine? They routinely score in the 90s, high-90s and there are a few 100s from serious wine writers. The wines are not the least expensive in Livermore because he charges what they're worth rather than what the winery next door offers. If you take your wine seriously, I highly recommend their top-of-the-line tasting where you'll usually get some of his fantastic Premier Cab, L'Autre Cote Cabernet Franc (if you ever see Steven and have about an hour to kill, ask him why Cab Franc is his favorite grape) and the astounding Lineage blend that is comprised of the best barrels of the best barrels of the best barrels he can find. SKW is in a really sweet spot right now. It's a relatively small family winery with just enough scale to do some really interesting things. Today, that was an unheard of Cabernet Franc Blanc (yes, a white Cab Franc) and a Cab Franc Pet Nat that was delicious but not for sale as it was "an experiment" that I would say was a huge success. Bottom line: If you want to go wine tasting in Northern California for under one thousand dollars, go to Livermore. If you want to taste some wine that tastes like the "thousand dollar place," go to Steven Kent Winery. read more

I have visited Steven Kent twice in 2023. First with my daughter at the previous location and then a few weeks ago with my husband at the new location. I love the wines, and the new location is excellent. I particularly enjoyed the 2020 L'Autre Cote Cabernet Franc - Bates Ranch. This is a great place to enjoy and pick up some genuinely top-notch California wines in the Livermore Valley. I would join their club, but I have six wine clubs throughout California. If any of my clubs close, these guys are next in line. In the meantime, I will use my Priority Wine Pass to enjoy the 2 for one tasting. Don't pass these guys up. The wine from this winery was superb! My friends and I tried a flight of wines and we were very impressed. I would highly recommend the Lineage wines, they were very nice on the palette. There's also bread sticks available! The staff here was knowledgeable and friendly, we had a stellar experience. Stop number 3 on our visit from Sacramento. It was a little bit later in the afternoon so I called first before arriving to make sure they could fit us in. They were so friendly on the phone and told us to come on over. Easy to see and find from Tesla Road. We walked in and we're greeted immediately. We chose to sit outside where we were followed out by Vjay with the tasting menu. Each tasting was described to us and we were given some time to select which one we wanted to taste. After a few moments he came back and I decided to go with the TLC flight for $20. It included one white and 3 reds. When they were brought out he told me about them all and suggested which order to taste in. He came by a couple times to check on us and we had some awesome conversations with him. He ended up recommending some great restaurant and bar/ speakeasy spots which was cool. As we talked a little more with him he gave me a map of which wineries he recommended stopping by which was so sweet of him. Best place to wrap up our tasting and Vjay was awesome! I will definitely be back to try the Allocation flight and see Vjay again! The ground are lovely with great areas for taking pictures. I stopped into The Steven Kent Winery on a trip to Livermore. The area is dominated by the larger places, but this boutique style winery was a refreshing alternative. Their large but intimate winery is along Tesla with a decent amount of parking right next to the vines. The tasting room is in the basement of a larger building which is a little industrial, but they added some nice tables for group tastings. You are served at the table instead of a bar for a longer and more intimate tasting of their flight. My flight was mostly red with one white IIRC. The server was good describing the wine and it's various attributes. I enjoyed the wine which made the visit great. It was higher end with good quality and flavor. The overall feel is perfect for most older groups looking for something quiet and intimate. The focus here is on the wine rather than a party. read more

The Steven Kent Winery is a bit like a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. Or maybe it's more like a physiologically ripe Cabernet grape cluster encased in a tangle of pruned leaves and vines all tucked into a once used Taransaud French oak barrel (take that, Sir Winston!). Metaphors and similes aside, it will take more than a single visit to unravel the riddle that is SKW. For one, "Kent" is a middle name, not a surname. The multigenerational winemaking heritage that the founder continues is that of the Pellier and Mirassou families, who were Santa Clara Valley vintners dating back to the 1850s, until the brand name "Mirassou" was sold to Gallo in 2003 and the original vineyards were tragically torn out to make room for suburban housing developments on the outskirts of San Jose (although the family kept extensive grape growing property in Monterey County, which continues to produce fine wines). We arrived at this winery just for a quick sample of their L'Autre Côte Cab Franc without a reservation. Steven Kent winery honored our request by giving us a sample but then asked us to come back after a tasting we had at another winery. This was very nice of Steven Kent winery to accommodate us. Great hospitality. After sampling the Cab Franc we decided to take up the offer to come back since it was that good and we wanted to see what else they had to offer. We had the opportunity to sample their Lineage Collection along with a couple of cabs. The wine did not disappoint. As a matter of fact, everything we tried was fantastic. Some of these reviews say this winery has some of the best wines in Livermore. I'd go a bit further than that. In my opinion they have some of the best wines period. We walked out with 6 bottles and have since bought more. I won't attempt to qualify my experience to back up my opinion....see for yourself. The winery itself is decent. It's not flashy and that's quite okay. The experience is all centered around the wine, which is what we prefer. The winery is dog friendly, which is always a must for us. A plus is that we got to meet Steven himself and had a chance to geek out a little with him on our mutual fondness of Cab Franc. The wines themselves may at first seem a bit pricey but when you compare the prices to what you'd get equivalent in other wine regions like Napa I'd say they're a very solid value. No need to drive to Napa for wine anymore, hah. Mitty C. was hosting a Rotary alumni event in the patio area of Steven Kent Winery. The patio was huge with lots of tables and seats... which was perfect since the weather was also beautiful. The tasting room is a little small, but not sardines-in-a-can small. There should be a must go/worth while/proceed with caution when you review certain places. I think wineries fall into that category because pallets, tastes, and prices are considerable factors. Steven Kent is a must go for people who are looking for Napa-esque wines without the headache of sitting at the 121/29 light for three cycles. If you're looking for a Napa property experience, this isn't that place. Also if you're looking for silky, smooth rounded, wines you'll get the latter more than the former. What the winery is, a bordeaux house that also dabbles in other varietals and blends that, on occasion, has the opportunity to shine against their counter parts such as Lola (a white blend) or their Barbera. Otherwise you'll be getting some tasty Cab Francs, Petite Verdots and Cabs all within the Livermore Valley. There's two tasting rooms, the Barrel and the Reserve. Think of the Barrel room as the flavor of the month, because he produces so much wine there's always something new. The Reserve room if you have time is more Napa like, a sit down, guided experience with some engaging story tellers. The Reserve room is where the wines and the identity of the winery as a whole get showcased. I recommend going during the Lineage or Premiere Cab release times for the Reserve Room which is in October and May, respectively. As for the wines, something different about this winery is the Single Vineyard Series. A bottle of wine that 100% of a single varietal from a single vineyard. Ghielmetti, Home and Smith Cabs are the ones to pay attention to. Lineage if you do have the opportunity really is a blend of what it should mean to be a Livermore Valley wine and sets the bar pretty high both in quality and price point for the Valley. If you have a discerning pallet and understand what your paying for at price points that are between $48-$155 go for it. read more

We are not port drinkers and wanted to swap out the port on the menu for something else, we were told that nothing else was open and instead we can taste something else again. Am I really to believe that they only have 4 open wines??? The atmosphere is nice, we had a table in form of a barrel to ourselves and some snacks as we tasted, it was nice to have our own time and not be crowded at a counter but it seemed the servers didn't know much about wine, ours was reading straight off the bottle. Went to four wineries in Livermore in January this was my least favorite. Let me first say my wife and I drink a lot of wine and taste all over and have pretty good palates we are not noobies when it comes to wine, further when a winery has a good wines and customer service we buy a lot of wine, Steven Kent met neither of these criteria. First a major turn-off we walk in a party of four and someone yells, "be with you in a minute" there is a sign to wait to be seated. A minute later someone says "have you been helped"? we say no, she says "would you like to be helped"? no duh. Her help was to charge us for four tastings before we even tasted. Never had to do that before its not like they were busy and they risked us skipping out on their overpriced $15 tasting fee. Then we were escorted to a pub table really no interaction. Poured our first wine no explanation about the wine or the winery no questions to start a conversation etc and it went that way for the entire tasting just very cold and un friendly and on top of it out of all the wines only one was even drinkable, we couldn't wait to leave and spend out money elsewhere. This tasting was in a small basement with a more intimate feeling. Although it was $10 which is pricey for Livermore, they served some delicious cheese with cracker-sticks. The server was very knowledgable and generous. Had a nice ambiance although I could imagine it being crowded on some days. All the wine's that they served were unique and great tasting. read more
