Super cute restaurant! I absolutely adored the outdoor seating that reminded me of Paris. We were sat upstairs, which gave us a different view and experience of the restaurant. Despite the restaurant being a little small and bustling, I did not feel cramped. The menu had a variety of options for any taste buds, so it was a great spot for a big group. We shared the bagna calda, which came with only 1 piece of bread so we had to pay extra for additional bread. The bread was soooo soft and tasty. Everyone in my group was pleased with their orders! I ordered the short rib ravioli with the garlic lovers sauce. My only critique was that it was just a tad too salty for me, but it wasn't horrible. The service was amazing from start to finish. I absolutely loved Stinking Rose back home in LA, so I was so happy to see their original location pop up on my Yelp while searching for dinner on a Friday night. It was easy to make reservations online for 2 for the same day at 8pm. Upon arrival we were seated inside quickly and I was reminded why I absolutely love the vibe of this place. The theme is so on brand and fun! I will say that the LA location was a lot bigger with more space, so it did feel a little cramped at our small 2 person table. I ordered my usual - the Bagna Calda and the Sizzling Garlic Prime Ribeye Stake which comes with the most delicious garlic mashed potatoes. The Bagna Calda is the MUST GET APP! Oven roasted whole garlic cloves in olive oil and butter with a hint of anchovy - literally heaven for all garlic lovers and pairs so perfectly with the bread. I ordered my Ribeye medium rare and it was cooked well. The mashed potatoes are my absolute favorite! So flavorful and I loved it more than steak. We loved this place but today was just one of the worst dining experiences ever. We were sat down outside which was fine however there were people waiting for ubers that were standing in front of our table that were coughing, smoking and just were hovering over us. So don't eat outside if you go here. We ordered as soon as our waiter came to us we ordered at the same time as the table next to us. The table next to us got their food in 15 mins, ate, paid and left. And we were still waiting for our food to arrive. Our server never checked in with us or acknowledged how long we waited which was well over an hour. Eventually we asked the bus boy who was sooo kind and he was very apologetic when we said we just wanted to leave and explained there may have been an issue in the kitchen that held up our food. 1 hour and 15 mins later our 2 steaks and one pasta arrive. Finally the server came to check in and we mentioned the wait and how we were never updated and he claimed the meat takes a while.... One was asked to be medium and the other medium rare.. ok whatever the meat took 1 hr and 15 mins. We cut into our steak and the meat was raw our server saw this and didn't say nothing we asked for the bill and now I'm at home cooking the meat the way we requested... stinking rose is not the place to go anymore. I'm an LA native who totally missed the boat on getting to try the Stinking Rose back home before its closure (RIP). So, I couldn't pass up the chance to try on my latest trip to SF. Arrived on time for my 6:15pm reservation and was immediately. Since I'm a solo girly, normally I would have opted for bar seating , but I had to get an eyeful of the vibes. Such a cute and kitschy place. I love a bit of quirk so this was right up my alley. For drinks, I started off with a Dracula's sunrise and followed it up with a watermelon margarita both super great but the margarita was the winner for me. Comes with a giant hunk of watermelon in the middle. Yum! I made sure to start off strong with the Bagna Calda. Simply garlic confit and bread. Really good. For my main I had the Cioppino! This was great and could have easily been shared with another person. Lovely mussels, crab, calamari all dancing in a delicious tomato sauce. I loved this. Best of all, they topped this with a glorious amount of Parmesan. Rigoberto helped me out for the evening and was totally great, helpful and gave me a lovely experience. It's been a while since we visited The stinking Rose, the last time it was in 2016, for my daughter's 18th bday. This time, new location and new set up. My sister and I were in the city to buy a cake for my husband at the bakery next door and decided to grab lunch. We grabbed a table on the front facing the street, we were helped right away. I ordered the bbq garlic chicken pizza and my sister the bacon, tomato and avocado baguette. It was delicious. Finally checked this place out for my birthday this past summer. I am a person who looooves garlic. Minced garlic on the stove is the BEST savory smell EVER. At the end they gifted some garlic ice cream and sang a birthday song, but no garlic hat that I heard was a popular thing in the past (though my friend said the hat looked old and dirty so maybe they got rid of it). The garlic ice cream didn't taste like garlic lol. I'm unsure if it was because the ice cream was so subtly flavored and the meal I had before was heavier on garlic so I just couldn't detect it in the ice cream? Seeing the restaurant reopen in a new space brings a wave of nostalgia for anyone who remembers the original location. The spirit is still there, but at the moment it feels like the restaurant is still settling into its new skin. Dinner began with Bagna Calda and bread, the classic start that once defined the experience here. The warm garlic butter dip was beautifully aromatic and exactly what you want from a restaurant built around garlic. Unfortunately, the bread itself didn't live up to the memory. It was noticeably chewy and dense, lacking the soft, fresh, almost addictive bread the original location used to serve -- the kind that practically demanded you keep dipping. For the main course I ordered the Sizzling Garlic Prime Ribeye Steak, which arrived theatrically sizzling and perfumed with garlic. The steak was cooked precisely to the temperature I requested, which I appreciated. However, the ribeye itself was a bit chewy and didn't quite feel like the level of meat quality you'd hope for in a dish carrying such a bold name. The flavor was there, but the cut didn't quite rise to the occasion. Dessert brought the evening back to classic Stinking Rose territory: Gilroy's Famous Garlic Ice Cream. It remains one of the most playful and oddly satisfying desserts in the city -- creamy, sweet, and with just a whisper of garlic that makes you smile more than question it. Where the evening struggled most, however, was service. The staff felt distracted and not particularly attentive, and neither the hostess nor our server seemed to have checked the notes attached to our reservation -- something that's normally a small but meaningful detail that makes guests feel recognized. The waiters were very polite, attentive, and honestly looked tired :( We ordered their signature garlic dish, two pastas, garlic ice cream and two cappuccinos. Our water glasses were constantly refilled - the service was very attentive. The garlic was swimming in oil, but when you put it on the bread it didn't feel quite as greasy. Since parking is limited, I'd recommend taking public transit: 30/45 bus stops and Chinatown Station are walking distance. *Verdict: 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 d/t service. All the staff were efficient and friendly, answering questions about the menu, refilling our water, clearing our plates, and even taking pictures for us. Even though it was a full house, they all looked genuinely happy to be there. Portions are large and definitely good for sharing. A Garlic Lover's Dream--Still as Good as Ever! My friends and I had lunch at The Stinking Rose in North Beach, SF, and as always, it did not disappoint! It was my friends' first time, and I was so excited to introduce them to this iconic Italian spot--and they loved it just as much as I do. We started with the legendary Bagna Calda (hello, garlic heaven!) and the soup of the day, which was flavorful and comforting. Then came the LaSagna Al Forno--rich, cheesy, and perfectly baked--and the garlic fennel sausage pizza, which was a total hit. 3.5 rounder up. Bagna calda was delicious and unexpectedly had a hint of sweetness. The bread it came was also good. Loved the toastiness coarse salt on top. The bread was a bit on the denser side but it was fine. The roasted salmon was tasty and had the perfect crispiness to it. It lay on a bed of salad; which was nothing great and a side of potatoes that were on the thinner side and a little too sweet for my liking. I like my potatoes with thicker consistency. The flavor tasted like they added bagna calda to it but it was sweeter than the bagna calda side dish we ordered. The portion was also small for the price. I was still hungry. We ordered the tomato alfredo parmagiano reggiano cream sauce, garlic rose relish pasta with fresh fettuccine and added shrimp. I was pleasantly surprised that the shrimp was not battered and picked up the flavor of the sauce. Although, the number of shrimp was scarce. Again, this portion was small for the price but I would pick the flavor of this dish over the roasted salmon. The pictures of the menus in Yelp seem to be outdated so check out their menu on their website. Finally tried their garlic ice cream. This was fantastic. I just wish it didn't have the chocolate since it overpowers the garlic. I ate around the chocolate to taste more of the garlic. Garlic ice cream totally works for garlic lovers! I've always wanted to check out this place since it's been around since I could remember. I was born and raised here and felt it was always a tourist trap. It kind of is but still a great experience! For many decades I have wanted to try The Stinking Rose...and finally got around to it! No reservation needed at as we waltzed in at 8pm on a quieter Sunday. Friendly staff all around from the host, busser, and waiter, loved the Italian American San Fran ambience... While the pasta dishes are very Italian American and very tasty, the portions are rather small for this price point. $25 Pt. Reyes Blue Cheese Crispy Bacon, Garlic pasta...my male compatriot said it was good as it sounded! Rich and creamy, fresh fettuccini. However, the portion size could have been 30-50% larger, it wasn't quite filling enough. $25 Garlic Brie & Mushrooms pasta...for me, this a lovely pasta in a rich creamy cheesy sauce, but I also paid an extra $17 for crab meat...very good overall! Though again, this was a $42 pasta dish that didn't leave my quite full. I'll give The Stinking Rose another try someday, hopefully in less than a decade! read more

Stinking Rose, I owe you an apology. Why has it taken me this long to have finally come visit you? One of my best buds gave me a gift card years ago to this place and I've never gotten around to going. Flash forward 15 years from getting the gift card and on a random Saturday I finally got a chance to try it out. Located in North Beach, as soon as I entered, I immediately turned to my friend and said,"this is such a vibe!" I love the aesthetics of the restaurant as you see so many decorations reminiscent of old theme restaurants. My eyes wandered to every nook and cranny of the restaurant and it was very nostalgic. As for the food, let me tell you, I didn't know I was missing something in my life until I took a first bite of the bagna calda appetizer. It is a simple garlic dish in oil that you spread on bread. The garlic was smearable and practically melted on the bread! It was to die for! The only downside is they give you only a small dinky piece of bread. I couldn't muster enough courage to ask for more bread but should have. I forgot to mention, most ALL the dishes have garlic in it, hence the name. I ordered the ribs and not to be cliché but the juicy meat was literally falling off the bone and was covered in garlic. The flavor was amazing and the garlic was not overpowering. My friend ordered the ribeye with garlic and he gave me a piece to try. Definitely one of the best ribeyes I've ever had! The garlic again was the star of the show and made the ribeye 5x better. My other friend ordered the Caesar Salad and she said it was yummy too. I would take her word for it because she's a connoisseur of Caesar Salads(failed to ask her if it had garlic in it). Of course we made room for dessert and had some yeah you guessed it, garlic ice cream. Honestly the first bite confused my brain. At the beginning it's just like any other vanilla ice cream but then 2 seconds later you taste the garlic. And for some reason it works!! Moral of the story, don't be like me, go try out The Stinking Rose right now. Make sure to bring some mints! read more
