My friend and I made a reservation for a weekday evening. Most of the restaurant was empty around the time we came, and the servers were attentive to our orders and needs. Buttermilk Fried Calamari: This was a crispy dish that came with two delicious side sauces. The portion size was decent for its price and good starting appetizer! I'm kind or disappointed tbh. I was really looking forward to the meal here. Starters were good (octopus salad was great) and the service was very nice. The lamb chops were okay, but only two rib chops so it didn't feel like a full portion. It came with grilled cabbage but much of it was burned, not charred but burned to the point of being inedible. Pepper steak was okay. They charge for bread service, which is crazy. It was just a normal loaf of bread. Maybe they make it in-house, but paying for bread and regular butter seems really out of touch at such an expensive place. We spent almost $300 pp (two bottles of wine) and at that price, I really expect a superior meal. This was not. I won't return, even if someone else is paying. read more

Such an amazing experience we had at OSSO Steakhouse on Friday night after traveling to San Francisco to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Wow walking into the restaurant I felt like I was transported to the Deco era. The service was impeccable and so attentive. We ordered the dry aged ribeye that was made perfectly with a baked potato with all the fixings. We also had the Cesar salad and broccolini bit so good! Such excellent service from the moment you walk in the door. Staff were very attentive making sure we were satisfied with our seat. Our server Nico was kind and with us the whole way making sure everything was to our liking down to the temp of our tomahawk steak, which was cooked perfectly medium rare. A manager even checked in with us and chatted about our wine selection, which was nice to get that kind of attention. Dessert was divine, the crème brûlée perfectly silky and not too sweet. Food was ok but not great for the price. I got a thick filet mignon and asked for medium rare, but they gave me mostly rare and bloody. The creamed spinach was too watery and the mashed potatoes had a layer of oil on top. Broccolini was very good. The crème brûlée was slightly overcooked. Also the bathroom was very old and very dirty, and you have to go down these old creaky elevators and step over a bunch of dirty towels where the roof was leaking to get to them. Also a bit dark, no one around, and scary. Not what you'd expect from a "fine dining" establishment. The service was great, though. Prices are high but they give you a lot of food and it's top-quality in an upscale setting and location (the bottom of a Nob Hill condominium next to the Masonic, so it's good to see a show at.) There's an excellent happy hour at the bar or in the lounge from 5-6pm daily. $8 cocktails and drinks and also steak frites or sandwich for under $30! Service is excellent. Our party of four visited for dinner and was greeted with a very warm welcome. We were seated immediately and offered water, and our server took our drink orders right away. However, we did wait quite a while for those drinks to arrive. While the food came out in a reasonable amount of time, the quality was disappointing. I ordered the lobster tail, which was small, rubbery and overcooked. My husband's pork was also overcooked, dry, and so greasy that you could taste the frying oil. Our friends ordered a filet mignon medium-rare, but it arrived overcooked as well. Even the sides were a letdown; the baked potato and potatoes au gratin were incredibly heavy and thick--the au gratin lacked the balance you'd expect from such a dish. Given the high price point, the quality just wasn't there. To make matters worse, I ended the night with an upset stomach. Unfortunately, we won't be returning. read more

I'm a sucker for a steakhouse. Osso delivered. The ambience is quite nice, albeit with a little bit of a "hip" edge as steakhouses go (mainly due to the stylish lighting on the sides of some of the booths). The service was excellent, as far as being attentive and friendly. My New York strip was delicious. The broccolini and French fries are both great sides. My son got a wedge salad, and the bacon in it looked amazing; very thick pieces. The reason I'm giving a 4 rating instead of a 5 is that the drinks, as well as the food, took a very long time to come out. I don't blame them; they were quite busy and were nice enough to accommodate our party of eight without a reservation. Additionally, one member of our party didn't get his steak with the rest of us. It seems to have been left out by accident, and so they had to rush it out. The restroom is downstairs and you must hop on an elevator to get to it. Visited this place while visiting San Francisco and so glad I did! They made our anniversary night fantastic! I had the Cesar salad to star and halved it with my guest and it was perfect and overall good salad. Then on to the main course that was the 24 dry aged ribeye which was cooked perfectly to medium rare and had fantastic flavor. You could taste aged beef and that's a great flavor profile that I truly enjoy. The sides were great and the baked potato with large chunks of bacon was good and the best side was the broccolini. It had this tangy, crunchy and somewhat a bit of seasoning or spice that made it burst with flavor in my mouth! The ambiance is unique with the art deco theme and really sets you back to years of old. This was a five star experience. I was going to knock it a star but decided not to for the fact that I had a 24 ribeye and I cook good quality ribeyes all the time and this one had quite a bit of fat on it. II had to guess, probably an easy 4 oz of fat for sure. Overall the flavor of the steak and sides along with the great service settled it at 5 stars and will certainly be back! read more

Ambiance - interesting table setup. There were a number of booths (reminiscent of a diner). I went with a group of 4 people for dinner. The restaurant was mostly empty yet we were crammed into a relatively small booth. We saw larger tables and were genuinely surprised our server placed us at the smaller table. The table height was a bit high in comparison to the very plush seats. In other words, seating was a bit awkward. Service Our sever was a bit pushy starting us off with cocktails instead of the wine we wanted. Otherwise he and the bus boys were very nice. Food We ordered a lot of food, including a tomahawk steak for the table. We asked for medium minus or medium rare plus (we were told they couldn't do that) and we received medium well much to everyone's dismay. There was sizable about of grizzle too, which was disappointing. It was OK. The au poivre sauce was very salty. The other sides were decadent and good. Club like ambience. Outstanding service. Best steak in town as far as I'm concerned. I had crusted asparagus, which managed to be crisp on the outside and crisp on the inside. SF birthday weekend with my two best friends, first dinner was at Osso.... Pros: super friendly service. From the moment we arrived to the time we left, everyone we interacted with was great. The cheese bread was quite delicious, a nice combination of moist garlicky bread on the inside, piping hot crunchy cheesy bread on the outside (mmmmm!). The potatoes au gratin and the crab cake also had great flavor. For dessert we ordered the crunch cake, can't go wrong with the chocolate and hazelnut combination. Lastly, they gave us 3 glasses of champagne to celebrate our birthdays which was a nice touch! Cons: this is a steak house first and foremost and our dry age ribeye was one of our least favorite things about the meal (also the most expensive part too!) both friends thought the streak could use more seasoning (i.e. salt.) The bathroom, it's a little secluded. You take the elevator down and then it's straight ahead once the door opens. It was a little scary, especially if you make the trek solo! Given the ambience of Osso, I was expecting them to clean the table with the little blade, as they traditionally do at fine steakhouses. This wasn't done, so we had lots of little crumbs or pieces of food. The mess was totally on us, but it was something that I noticed as far as room for improvement. Oh, they also charge for regular bread ($5), it's an old timey steakhouse, bread should be complimentary! One friend said it was smart marketing- if you're going to pay for bread, may as well get the cheesy one that is $9 more! I don't know, bugs me when you're paying so much for a meal (our meal was over $300!) I feel it's very nickel and dimming... not cool. We did enjoy many aspects of our meal and experience, but because the steak was what we enjoyed least, my friends and I all felt "3" was the appropriate overall rating. read more

Hands down one of the better steakhouses I've dined out. The hubby can grill up a mean steak, so we don't often opt to visit steakhouses, but it was a special weekend, so we decided to try a new place. It was July 4th weekend so it wasn't too crowded and getting a reservation was easy but my guess is on a regular weekend, it's gotta be pretty crowded. What I liked about this place was that it had the old skool vibe with a modern touch. Keeping it short and sweet......food was delicious from apps, salads, mains to dessert. We dined with a foodie friend and her problem is that dessert is never good enough (she bakes so I can see that), but here, they passed the test; dessert was really good. We corked a bottle of wine at $35 (pretty cheap for a really nice steakhouse) and had some pre dinner cocktails (they make the best dirty martini and was pretty cheap for SF/steakhouse standards). The cherry on top? Our server, Thomas! OMG! WHAT A HOOT. I've met quite a few great servers, but Thomas takes the cake. Thomas was not only good at his job and super attentive to our group, but he SINGS apparently. Ha! He and the hubby were reminiscing about concerts and bolted out verses from songs they both loved. If only every server was like Thomas! I would definitely come back again and will try to make it a regular spot. Side Note: We ubered. Most amazing steakhouse I have experienced. I'm already planning to come here for my birthday next year. The ribeye- delectable. Amazing steak I've put in my mouth. It was tender, juicy, cooked to my standards, and honestly every bite was delicious. My boyfriend and I aren't of age to drink alcohol yet but our nonalcoholic drinks still were amazing! This was my second time here at Osso Steakhouse. I've been here previously but the experience was forgettable but tonight was extremely memorable. To start, we arrived at 6:15 pm for a 7 p.m reservation. To our luck, we were able to get seated right away. Tonight I was lucky enough to be helped by Daniel and Ramsey. Their service was some of the best I've received in all the restaurants I've ever been to. I ordered a rare steak, but when it came out, it was actually medium rare. Ramsey noticed my hesitation and reassured me to inform him if anything wasn't to my liking. With that, I ended up sending the steak back (I never send food back) and had a new one brought out in around 10 minutes. The new steak was perfectly rare to my liking and the sides/starters were all stars by themselves. The service was my favorite part of the night-- the staff checked in periodically and ensured the courses were coming out promptly (not too early, not too late). I made sure to thank Daniel and Ramsey before I left-- they're truly experts in their roles and made my night. Highly recommend swinging by for dinner, food and service are beyond!! read more

Summary: Old school steakhouse with solid food and an art deco charm. Details: Located in the Gramercy Towers, conveniently next door to The Masonic. Once inside, it's a throwback to old San Francisco with black and white herring bone floors, red leather booths/chairs, and a bustling bar. The background music was mostly jazz but I think I heard some hiphop mixed in. The bathroom is outside the restaurant and down some stairs. They are used to people coming before shows and so know how to time your meal. For us, 100 mins was perfect. On to the food... Crab cakes are excellent. They come as four "hand formed" smaller cakes placed on top of a mildly spicy remoulade. Lots of crab, very little (if any) filler. Filet (8oz) was soft and buttery, as it should be. We asked for medium and it came just a bit less than that -- as most steakhouses will. If you're unsure what to get, this is a good choice. Bone-in Ribeye (20 oz) was good but didn't live up to their claim of "best steak house in SF." Next time, I'd try the akaushi dry aged instead. The chimichurri had a nice blend of flavors and complemented the ribeye well. The sautéed cremini mushrooms were outstanding. Meaty and very lightly spiced. The creamed spinach wasn't too creamy -- we enjoyed it but didn't really need it. Somehow the fries with aioli stole the show. Hot they were amazing but even when they cooled down they were delectable. There were several tempting desserts but we didn't have any room left. The wine list is extensive if you're getting a full bottle, but more limited if you just want it by the glass. There was only one choice for champagne by the glass and it was quite good. The servers were efficient if not a bit perfunctory. Every table was taken so I assume they were more than a little busy. Osso is a reliable choice when you're on Nob Hill. read more

When you walk into this cool building it's surprising to see the outdated architectural features until you turn to enter the restaurant and you are drawn into the geometry, the shapes, the colors. In the shadow of Grace Cathedral and the California Street cable car line lies a hidden gem of a timeless steakhouse called Osso where the jacketed chefs are on show through a glass window into the kitchen. You can tell the chefs are enjoying themselves in the kitchen and that joy comes out in the cooking. To begin with, we have an 80's homage to Art Deco with the decor with a touch of playfulness, smooth jazz playing in the background, rosebud carpeting Orson Welles' Citizen Kane would die for, the darkened dining room lighting conducive to a romantic meal for two or a steak-lovers feast for four or more. We had our pick of either tall-leather captain chair seating next to the kitchen or comfy leather booths, of which we chose the latter. The white linen tables and service are a special treat when you want to make a lasting impression with your date or family and friends. We had impeccable service and the friendliest and most helpful waiter ever. One of my personal pet peeves is when the busboy never comes by to refill your glass of water, but the busboy at Osso had an eagle eye to make sure my glass was always full and any crumbs were cleaned up off our table between courses. The cheese bread alone hits it out of the park: a garlicky cheese bread, overflowing with melted cheese, on a cast iron plate. I could see customers coming in just for the cheese bread. The Tomahawk steak was perfectly cooked to medium rare and sliced for easy serving. The steak melted like butter in our mouths- it was that tender and, again, perfectly seasoned with herbs. The long-stemmed broccolini with crunchy bits was a perfect pairing with the steak. They have many other sides we didn't get to try that we will save for next time. Since neither of us drink alcohol, we chose not to partake of their extensive wine and cocktails list. They do offer a few enticing mocktails that I'll have to try next time. What can I say about the wedge salad other than it was a beauty to behold and smoky chunky bits of bacon and dressing took it over the top. Wedge salads have a long history in relation to steakhouses in general but it opens the palate to all of the other savory flavors that come with the smokiness of steak. The chef has been able to give a lightness to excellent dishes that could be too rich and heavy, even with the desserts that we tried. The chocolate hazelnut crunch cake was both the perfect combination of heavy and light. The warm and rustic apple frangipane galette is served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The pastry was crispy and light and allowed the apple filling to shine through. Since the restaurant is located at the top of Nob Hill, which is rather steep, you might choose to ride a cable car to get there, or have a Waymo drop you off, but since we only live a few blocks away, we decided to hoof it and work up our appetite. Before or after your meal, you could enjoy the surrounding area and burn off your meal and enjoy the view. My partner and I really enjoyed his birthday meal tonight. Until next time, Bon Appetit! The Yelp ratings had me skeptical. Highly underrated. Purchased tickets to a venue at the Masonic and didn't want to pay for parking twice so we chose this due to proximity but it didn't disappoint. Osso has thee most amazing arugula salad I've ever had and it was so filling, I'd go back just for that. The Branzino was chefs kiss! Bone-in filet and mushrooms were amazing. Came here for a birthday dinner and was really impressed with the service at this establishment. Very friendly and very attentive, A+. The food was great it did not disappoint. We ordered asparagus fries, which were Parmesan crusted and fried to perfection. The asparagus was still al dente and not over cooked I highly recommend this app. I'm not a big fan of crab cakes but the ones here are really good, crisp and the remoulade paired well with them. The Mac n cheese here was surprisingly good, steakhouses usually miss with the Mac n cheese imo but the Mac n cheese here was made well, not sure what they topped it with but it added some crunch like texture and it was fire. The NY steak was cooked medium perfect and the mushroom Demi-glacé was fabulous. Paired it with some great red wine as well. Great place for a special occasion.
