If you like good beer, then this place is pretty awesome. I came in here with a couple of friends and was really happy to find they had Hair of the Dog Doggie Claws there. We also had another Hair of the Dog beer, this time their IPA which I thought was only ok. It looks like they change their beer selections so I am sure the menu will be different next time I come. This place is kind of small and tends to get packed quick, so get there early so you can get a table or a good place to stand. Also, the place gets a little warm and the windows steamy. I ended up here on a Friday night because Montana was WAY too crowded to be enjoyable. I have heard about their fantastic selection of Belgian beers, and have been interested in trying it, but as all of you know, I never make it over to the Hill, and I most definitely don't ever make it to this part of the hill(I was basically lost). We crammed ourselves into a booth, and all ordered a drink. I went with the Duchesse, at Corinna K's suggestion(she wasn't there, she just got an ROTD for it). It really was quite fantastic. I am not usually a huge fan of Belgian's, nor am I a huge fan of sours, but I saw red ale, which I am a huge fan of. I was pleasantly surprised. My boyfriend's sister was with us, and she doesn't like beer, but we all had her try our drinks, and mine was the one she hated the least.... so, I win, obviously. Cute bar, lots of old school board games, and a nice, laid back atmosphere. Good beer selection, just a weird location, for me at least. I definitely want to come back here, but I guess I will just have to wait for someone else to suggest it, and tell me how to get there. read more

After a harrowing day of entertaining The Mother and driving around forever trying to find a parking spot, I was ready for a cold one. Except all the choices were totally foreign and I didn't know what to order. I chose the first thing that sounded familiar--The Hoegaarden. It was alright, sort of like a Hefeweizen. And only $4, which was fine by me. Six of us were crowded into a booth made for 4, but since I was the only girl, how can I complain? Apparently we were very lucky to get a table as it was, because there is minimal seating and it was busy. So I really can't complain. Be aware: this is a beer-only establishment and they don't serve food, unless you count the serving-size bags of chips hanging on the wall. They also have a $10 minimum on cards, which they didn't tell me when I initially opened my tab. When I went to close out, after just the one beer, the bartender was nice enough to ask if I had any cash before running the card. Luckily I did and wasn't out ten bucks for one just-OK beer. Meh! This place was alright, but I can think of dozens of other places I'd rather go. read more

Ah, what's not to love about Stumbling Monk? It's a block away from my apartment, and it serves delicious, delicious pints of Chimay for $6 (I'm kind of a sucker for Trappist beers and this price in the US is quite the steal). Don't fret if you aren't obsessed with Chimay quite as much as I am--a pretty impressive array of other Belgian brews and American-made Belgian-style ales is always on offer. Hell, there was a Belgian-style brew from Japan on tap last night. Colour me impressed. I've never strayed from the tap list because I've always found something intriguing on it (and, you know, there's always Chimay), but their bottle selection is nothing to scoff at. I'd probably hit that up if I had more money I was willing to burn on a beer. Heh. Oh, and if you tire of either your phone or present company to entertain you while you sip your beer, there's a great selection of board games for you to try your hand out. Sadly no Cards Against Humanity (hint hint, bartenders), but something to whet every appetite. In short, just come here if you live near Olive Way and like beer. Stumbling Monk is not your everyday bar. Weird little corner location that's easy to miss. Medieval - like wooden door with tiny window. Fancy (and pricey) European beers that a Corona drinker like me has never heard of. HIGH ALCOHOL CONTENT. Different glasses to go with different drinks (the glasses are also pictured on the menu which I think is cute). Board games. Dog - friendly. Coaster art wall. Chill, dark, and relatively quiet. I like Stumbling Monk but it's not a place I'd go to frequently. This is definitely a spot for the discerning, serious beer drinker. I guess you can also get wine if you ask nicely. I wouldn't go here if you have respiratory problems, as it gets all humid and foggy in there when it rains (and this is Seattle, so...). And the bathroom smells like piss. But we played Scrabble till bar close and my beer fiend friends enjoyed their brews last night, so I'll add an extra Star for not being your typical Capitol Hill PBR hipster bar. read more

Imagine being trapped inside a steam room with ten men who haven't showered in a week. I felt like I was being strangled with a dirty jockstrap. The first beer I ordered (Duchesse de something) tasted like someone dipped the aforementioned jockstrap into an old bottle of port and foam and wrung it out into a glass. I took one sip and visibly recoiled in horror. It's pretty rare that I leave a wounded soldier, but this guy was down. One of my friends said his beer tasted like toothpaste, or perhaps mouthwash? In any case, he couldn't finish it. We did enjoy a rousing game of Scrabble while a middle-aged man wrote the names of classic rock bands in the steam on the windows. Ahhh the Monk. The place is nothing much from the outside and the inside is typical dark dive. This used to bother me until I accepted Seattle into my heart and am a born again dive-r. It also really helps that I love Belgium beers and they have a standard few on tap, as well as really fun ones in bottles. The prices are decent (I base this on the fact that Hoegaarden is $3.50...pretty fair) and the bartenders were surprisingly nice and helpful. I didn't get any rolled eyes when I asked for a recommendation and even turned down a few that didn't seem a good match. I stumbled in here before the Elite after party last week for a quick pint of cider before I faced the music down the street. This place definitely lacks atmosphere, I'll admit I wasn't even really sure exactly where I was till I checked my GPS thingy lol. I sat at the bar and played one handed solitaire while the bartender f-ed around with his iphone. He was less then thrilling to be near and seemed pretty distracted only putting down the phone to clean a few glasses or help a customer. I had an awesome cider here but holly crap in my cup it was OUTRAGEOUSLY priced... I didn't realize it till I got the bill that it was $8! yikes! I'll be honest and say it was bigger then a pint so I can't really complain but i was so not ready for that when I got the check. Anyways i'd totally take a beer freak here! They had an awesome to awe inspiring list of beers but make sure you eat before you go because they have NO food except for chips at $1.50 for one of those tiny little bags. read more

Short and sweet: This place has a great beer selection at great prices. The bartenders are knowledgable and friendly....the atmosphere SEVERELY lacking. Paint peeling off the walls, old paper coasters stapled all over the place, booths falling apart, and the most disgusting bathrooms in all of Seattle. Stumbling Monk is such a welcome change of pace from the "bro-grammer" dominated bars you'll find everywhere else in Seattle. The decor at typical Seattle bars may change, but it's generally always the same story. There's TVs showing sports. There's mostly dudes who work for one of the big tech companies roaring about how they're changing the world. There's a crusty barkeep rushing to keep everyone's glasses filled. Stumbling Monk is an oasis of respite in the sea of all this chaos. Generally, you can walk into Stumbling Monk and enjoy a nicely curated (but extensive) beer selection, play a board game with a friend in a medium-to-low noise setting, or read by a lamp while you sip your favorite brew. Meanwhile, the great Jazz of 88.5 KPLU plays in the background, and, yes, there is no TV playing sports to distract. It's laid back. It's relaxing. It's my new favorite place to go and read the newspaper after a long, stressful day. read more

One of my favorite beer bars in the city....plenty of great belgian selections with a few rotating taps. Every once in a while you can find a real treat that you can't find anywhere else in the city. Sure, it's a dive. But, it's relaxed with lots of cool people and great bartenders. If you're watching the wallet, they always have 2 or 3 "cheap" beers at $3 or less. They only serve beer. No food, no hard A. Which means you are able to bring your dog, if you feel the need ~ thank you, Washington law makers. Apparently that's the allure of this place to most Cap. Hill veterans. The beers here are ....weeeeeeeeeird. But exotic and rare it seems. I had the Echt something or other from the Belgian menu. It tasted like sweet and sour sauce from McDonalds. Quite intense, actually. Everything else was also very unique. The prices are pretty good and the whole place itself isn't very pretentious. This place would have been impossible to find if I hadn't been with locals, and I'd definitely come here regularly if I were a local. Strangers here were very friendly and a group even invited themselves to sit at the other half of our table and struck up a casual conversation; Their beer selection was excellent despite some outages; And there was something fun about the mystique of being in a seemingly nameless place. But in the interest of balance: They were out of numerous beers I wanted, I was apparently at risk of imminent death when I leaned against the window (the urgency in the bartender's stride and voice when he asked me to move was far from comforting), and the bartenders clung a little too desperately to their impartial server role to help me choose between the beers I was interested in. read more

Ah, the last stop of the day on our beer tour. Yes, we stumbled to and from here, so the name applies. This gem of a bar is small and homey and relaxed feeling. Country music was playing, not the music I'd expect from a Belgian beer bar, but I enjoyed it. The decor in this place reminds me of the leftovers of an elder's garage sale. With big booths, a bar, and random tables with mismatching chairs.. But who am I to judge? ;) Also, a big stash of board games were available to play. People were on their laptops, so I am assuming it has WiFi available. On tap were a great selection of Belgian beers and Belgian style beers: Dicks, Ommegang, Russian River, Chimay, Allagash, Hooegarden. Their bottle list is pretty decent and had some nice gems. The bartender was super friendly and knowledgeable, he offered us tasters of some of the beers on tap and on cask. I don't think there is food to order, however they do have a big selection of potato chips, if that is your thing. read more

I like beer. I like belgian beers a lot. Not my favorites, but I like the different styles a good belgian beer can entail. Stumbling Monk is all belgian beers, and if you aren't into that then you should skip the place. Otherwise, come here and enjoy some good Hoegaarden with lemon. There's lots of board games and such that are for usage while hanging out. My buddies and I played dominoes and drank beer for a few hours and it was good times. One thing about belgian beers is that they rarely come in pint-sized glasses (as in a real pint you'd get a Guinness or Mac and Jacks in). So factor that into the cost of your drink. Instead of 14oz or so in a pint, you're getting more like 10-12. There's a sour ale there that I hate, but apparently some people like it. Those people are weird. Do not let these people sit next to your children. read more

So, my friend Joe and I stopped in the other night wanting to grab a few beers and have a nice chat. Neither one of us had been in before and, since Joe lives on the block, we decided to check it out. Joe's a bit selective about most things in life. Snooty? No. Just knows what he likes and doesn't hesitate to express it. Maybe just a hair snooty. (But that's one of the many reasons I like him: I feel flattered that he hangs out with me.) So, we walk in the door and there goes Joe's nose up in to the air... P-U, it smells in here!, he whines. Joe! I say, in my best keep-your-voice-down tone. Wellllllll, he drawls out as he concedes to my request to pipe down. We move up to the bar, noting that many of the patrons seated around at various tables look relaxed and comfortable and don't seem to be bothered by any odors. But they are looking at us rather oddly. It feels like we've sauntered into an old western saloon and aren't being received well. I picture an old, gray, leather-vested, dusty piano player in the corner abruptly halting his performance as he spins around on his stool, tipping the brim of his hat up to glare at us. The bartender leans over the bar, We don't serve yer kind here. Now youz git outta here right quik. OK, that didn't really happen. But hey, maybe we're just paranoid. Anyways, the beer list looks inviting and we start to discuss it, but wait...what IS that smell? Uh, Joe? What is that? God! It smells like a locker room in here! Yeah, like dirty socks. A really ripe high school locker room. In the ghetto. On a hot day! We laugh, yet try not to breath in. (That's actually really hard to do.) So now we are both dissing the place, waving our hands back and forth in the air in front of our faces, as it that's going to help. And we're not using our "inside voices". God, this is awful! Doesn't anyone else notice it? Maybe they're all drunk. Or high. Good lord, it reeks in here. What the hell is that smell? Jesus, it's putrid. Are we staying? Hell no Joe, we're not staying! This is nasty! Outside we enjoyed sucking in deeply on Olive street's finest exhaust filled atmosphere. Despite the stench, it was worth going in there just for the laughs. I wanted to stand on the corner and double-dog dare people to go in. I'm sure the patrons were happy to see us leave. I admit, we were rude. But good lord people, in the words of the great Yelper Tim O: "It's like if your friend opened a cool-vibe bar with really good beer. But he opened it in your parent's basement. Their musty, lame-ass basement." No wonder the Monk is Stumbling: he's about to keel over from the STANK. Two stars for the bravery of having a unique beer selection. How can you not be sentimental about this place... OK, so Belgian beer isn't my thing, necessarily, but I gladly take sips of other people's to give everything the college try (and limit my intake at the same time)... we periodically have trivia nights here, and nowhere in town could be more welcoming. I've never been expected to buy anything while hanging out, and I think they wouldn't honestly care if (during non-peak times) I just curled up and used their space for a napping spot between errands or whatever I'm down there for... It's a little hard to find, and I'm kind of glad. If it were on Broadway, I'd really hate the selection of people. Still, it's a cool spot to be... not pretentious, not anything bad really... and moreover, they don't care if I bring in food from the deli at QFC or anything else... shows they don't care about much besides their beer, and that's fine... Once you've been there once and know that you should 1) take your restroom stop wherever you get your food and 2) get food somewhere that will give substantial amounts of something to soak up the booze... then you're fine. I'm not a beer drinker, but out of kinsmanship, this place will get some bucks out of me from time to time. They're just nice people... as for patrons, I don't judge a book by the people reading it, plain and simple. THAT would be pretentious. read more

I love Belgian beers and Belgian styles. This place is my favorite place in Seattle to go. First of all, they aren't overly priced and the place doesn't have a beer snob feel to it. That's big in my book. It's almost like walking into a bar in Belgium... almost. They let you bring food in from other places... which is awesome. 5 reasons I love this place: 1) They serve a wide selection of Belgian beers. And it's fun that they serve most of their beers in its own glass as they do in Europe. 2) It's casual and laid back. 3) Nice big tables for playing games. We usually bring some German board games to play which needs big tables. If you don't have your own games, they have a stack of them for you to borrow. 4) They don't serve food (except chips), but they let you bring your own (at least they've never said anything about it to us.) So I've picked up Sushi Maki and had pizza delivered there. It was awesome having pizza delivered to the bar. 5) It's within stumbling distance of home :) Caveat *As other people mentioned, it does get kinda gross in the summers. It's easy to miss the Monk. Looking at it from the street you might guess it was a used book store, or maybe an electronics repair place. Nope, it's a fabulous place to find great Belgian and other craft beer. The fact that they survive on word-of-mouth despite their seeming attempt to operate on the down-low a testament to how nice a place it is for beer lovers. They have bunch of rotating beers and I've never had a bad one. I bought several bottles of Barrel-Aged Leviathan here, long after I'd given up hope of ever seeing that beer again. As other reviewers have noted, you'll find knowledgeable staff, great beer properly stored and served. The fact that they sort of hide away from the world seems to keep the noisy hipsters and annoying scenesters away for the most part. Time just seems to slow down when I walk in. It would be nice if they could figure out a way to serve food here, but there are plenty of good restaurants nearby so that's a quibble. read more

I hope you like beer, otherwise you'd be parched here at Stumbling Monk as they only serve beer. For $6, you can get a challis of Dick's Grand Cru from Centralia, WA. They also serve a lot of foreign-sounding beers, which is why I ordered Grand Cru as it is the easiest to pronounce. The great thing about Stumbling Monk is that it is a very chill bar that allows you to play board games. They have some older games like Trivial Pursuit IV. The other option would be to bring your own, which is what we did. Like most bars, Stumbling Monk is pretty dark. In Belgium they've found the perfect way for church's to avoid lawsuits due to their holy men touching altar boys in their no-no places: they occupy their time brewing beer. Not just any beer mind you; we're talking high octane fuel with incredible taste. Aside from the aforementioned benefit of occupying their monks, it also serves as a great recruitment tool in enticing others into the monastic way of life. God and salvation alone just aren't a draw anymore. Beer, you can use ... Religion only ruins your life! Of course that's not all entirely true, but if the truth were fun to read then History class would have been a lot more popular in High school. The Stumbling Monk takes it's name from those beer brewing, abbey dwelling Monks of Belgium (and I suppose technically France as well, which I believe does lay claim to 1 beer brewing Monastery). It's aptly named, as all of the twelve or so taps feature only Belgian style beer. Regardless of where the beer is brewed, if it's Belgian style they likely serve it. You'll often find plenty of local breweries represented here as well as authentic ales from Belgium, not to mention the odd brew from around the US and even Canada. Much like a fasting Belgian monk's domicile, you'll find no food here. Unlike said monk, you can order food for delivery or even bring food with you. Beer is served in the appropriate goblet style glassware and if Belgian beer isn't your thang, a cooler jammed full of various other styles of beer await the finicky drinker. All of it is very reasonably priced, especially the draft drinks. It isn't uncommon to see a draft option here at half the price of a place like Brouwer's. This is a beer bar stripped of pretension. This is a positive for people who just want to drink a great beer and a negative for people who are looking for someplace glitzy to be seen. Other than some stellar beers, there's no glitz to be found here. It's almost like drinking in a buddy's basement, sans the bad beer. The furniture seems cobbled together to a certain degree and the walls are decorated with beer signs and boardgames. Even the air has a certain "funk" to it in here. Unlike the Lord, who we're told loves us regardless, this is a place you will likely either love or hate. If Belgian beer is your fancy, then you'll likely thank the Almighty for The Stumbling Monk. read more

This is undoubtedly a must-stop location for any beer enthusiast living or visiting Seattle. While Seattle-ites are fortunate to have a bounty of great local brews on tap at many area bars, The Stumbling Monk's selection stands apart as one of the best curated in town. There are usually only about 12 beers on tap, and a cask or firkin that gets tapped on Thursday's and goes until it runs out. The beers on tap usually include Belgians, sours, local specialties like a double IPA... But it's always different. This is not a place to pound Rainier's, nor are Mac n' Jack's or Manny's standards here. There may be a couple of standards (I think? At least they always seem to be available) like St. Bernardus ABT 12, and Duchesse de Bourgogne, but maybe I don't stop by frequently enough. There is a bottle list too, but the taps are so good and unique that I usually don't make it to the bottle list. The beers on tap are generally pretty rare, so no taste tests. Seriously, this has to be said because it seems like every group that comes in has a bro who asks for a sample. Not going to happen, get over it. Plenty of board games are available if that's your thing. Decor and vibe is a bit ... Um... Not good, but if you'd rather go to a nice, clean, modern looking bar, there are plenty of them in Seattle for you to choose from. As for me, I'll stick with the place that has ripped vinyl booths and awesome beer! read more

I don't think super awesome really encapsulates how really uber-awesome this place is. And you really can't truly appreciate it's grandeur without actually setting foot in here. Dark, cozy, small, and the largest selection of Belgian beers I have ever seen in one place. Both on tap and in bottles, served in the proper glasses for your selection, and with an alcohol content high enough to tranquilize an elephant, Stumbling Monk lives up to its name. Good luck finding the place if it's your first time going, sans the flashy lights or a glowing sign in the window, the large wooden door seems appropriate for abbey theme. And nothing says romance like fogged up windows on a cold, winter night. read more

Sure, there is no ventilation system, and its usually condensed with a fairly rounded group of the Hill's hipsters ready for a nightly cap off. But for what the ventilation lacks the beers make up for a minor part. I gave the espresso stout and a try came off with a slight twist of pucker and pow. Helpful tips: - $10 minimum for cards, so if your planning to drink light here, bring the cash. - seating can be hard to come by as its usually crammed from the back on. -Don't bother asking for help from the bartender on choosing a beer, best bet is to just randomly pick and choose. read more

Stumbling Monk is a quiet, laid-back place for a beer. The selection of beer is really great- which is probably the reason to stop by. For me, it was too dark, warm, and smelly. When we walked in the smell just hit us in the face- a musty stale odor. Limited selection on tap, kind of dirty and smelled like a dirty mop in there. But that said, the bar had a fair selection of board games and seating. Pretty straightforward bar, which I would not give a 4-star rating. I don't get what the hype about this place is. Sure, everyone seems to mention the steamy-ness of this place. Not in the girls here were all hot and steamy wanting to rip the average passerby-ers pants off. It was more that all the guys here were sweating beyond belief so it smelled more like a guys locker room. The belgian brews seemed nice from the reviews but what I can say from the two that I had tried tonight, that they were all they were cracked up to be. They weren't dirt cheap like some people who like to suggest one here. The CHEAPEST beer was around 4 dollars and the average was around 5 or 6, some going even higher than that for a glass of decent belgian brew. I was really surprised when I got here to see the prices on the wall, and how expensive they were, especially for chimay and other brews that were more common in seattle. It was interesting to see the types of people that came in to "stumbling monk" on a wednesday. The people were very nice for the most part, but mostly engrossed in their own conversations. All I can say, is the place is pretty good if you want to try different belgian brews that you might otherwise not be able to try in Seattle, but other than that steer away, because you can find a few of the brews at other bars for more reasonable prices. read more

I wasn't a big fan of this bar when I was hanging out here, but the next day it really grew on me. I'm not sure why, maybe it was the smell that night, the poor restroom facilities, the fact that it was super hot in there when I visited...I'm not sure... But in hindsight this was a really great place with knowledgeable bartenders and a varied selection of beers on tap that I'd never tried. I'm a fan of sour beers and they had more on tap than anywhere I've ever seen. Beer isn't my thing, so why did I come here? I was with a group, and I heard they had games. Everyone who DID like beer said that they had a unique and delicious selection, though. The light was so dim, however, that we could barely play our board game. We asked for more light and they basically said they couldn't do anything about it. It's just a dark space with bad lights. And no food. They do have menus from a bunch of the restaurants around the area that offer takeout, but it would be a lot nicer if you could just order something from the actual venue. read more

Probably my new favorite bar in Seattle! We... stumbled... upon it while lost in Capitol Hill (ok bad joke) and were immediately intrigued. I ordered a Pauwel Kwak which came in the most elaborate and amazing glass I've ever seen. The glass had to be supported by a wooden stand, immediately making it way more epic. The bar is filled with random old board games, which makes it a great place for groups if you want to post up for a while. TIP: It was hard to find seating at first, but just remember there's a pile of fold-up chairs hidden in the back! read more
