Went here on a busy Saturday during the lunch rush! The wait wasn't too bad. The place is clean and very appealing to look at. The bakery case is huge and very cool to look at while you're waiting! Used to go there often before their renovations but hadn't been for some time. Had dinner there late saturday nite and was extremely pleased with the meals. From the service to the food, it was a great experience. Ordered the tuna stack with the greek salad and it had to be the best greek salad i had ever had. they have mediterranean fries that were amazing - basil mayo, feta, mozz and capers and olives too! totally awesome! i hate going to a diner and finding a menu that's 8 pages long - to me it means that they aren't going to be able to do any single option well, but the suburban diners options were exactly what i was looking for and the three of us ordered very different things and everyone was quite pleased with them. our waiter was spot-on with service too and that made everything even better. This is the best diner that I've ever been to and I've been to a lot of diners in my life. I stopped here with my husband and in-laws on my way back to upstate NY after a hard day in NYC. The waiter was excellent, friendly, and funny. The menu has a lot of choices (not surprising for a diner) and many vegetarian options. I had the farro salad, my husband had a pepper and egg sandwich, my FIL had the veggie omelet, and my MIL had a mushroom & onion hamburger. All of the dishes were tasty and fresh. Nothing at this diner tasted pre-made or "store bought." I will definitely stop there again in the near future. read more

I ate here yesterday and am back again today. There food was great and the service even better... Had a pannini yesterday that was huge... Very generous portion, took half of it home. My husband asked for a medium well rib-eye, he got it well done. Manager came over and tried to convince us that the rib-eye was medium well despite showing him pics from the internet of what it should look like. Ordered Greek salad. The good thing is anchovies are an option, whereas some places do not even have them. The cheese was fine crumbs, rather than chunks. The salad greens were thrown together, and much too big. Greek salad used to come with a hard boiled egg and olives, not this one. Asked for oil and vinegar because dressing was tasteless. A salad should come with bread, or asked if you would like bread. We had to ask for bread. $13.00 plus, I don't think so. read more

Went there last night. We all hated our food. Only good thing was chocolate chip pancakes. Ordered mozzarella Sticks- NOT cooked enough. Ordered the nachos under appetizers- all chips were burnt and cheese wasn't melted. Ordered a buffalo chicken wrap with breaded chicken inside instead of grilled- horrible. My father, brother, and I recently flew into Newark and stayed the night in Paramus. It was late by the time we checked into our hotel, and the Suburban Diner was the nearest open eatery. The place was nice, and my brother had the Cuban burger, which was amazing. I had the chicken strips and French fries, which were also pretty good. The service was pretty good as well. One of our regular "go to" diners. These guys have been around since the 50s. No, it's not the Ritz, so don't go expecting a fine dining experience. What you'll get is good comfort food for an affordable price and right off Route 17, so you can easily swing by after work or shopping at Garden State Plaza. This place is one of the busier restaurants in Bergen county, regardless of whether we go during peak weekend hours or the middle of a Thursday afternoon. The food is fresher and higher quality than many diners in the area. The menu is big: you could pick something new off the menu for a year and never eat the same thing twice. They also have a special menu that rotates out every week and is consistently delicious. The specials always include soups, entrees, and desserts. If you have a special diet (vegetarian, gluten-free, low-fat, etc), you'll find something. Entrees are generous. We always bring home leftovers. The dessert counter always has fresh desserts and is really varied: linzer tarts, pies, cakes, cookies. What really stands out: the ice cream. I don't know where they source their ice cream, but Suburban has some of the best ice cream in Bergen County. The restaurant is divided into thirds and includes a side room, so noise is minimal. You're probably not going here for a business lunch, but you can easily chat with friends without raising your voices. There's a TV in each section, but the noise is off and people tend to ignore them. All this said ... the quality of service varies. Find your favorite person and stick with them. George is great so we always ask for him. He knows the menu inside out, knows what you want before you ask for it, and will remember every meal you ever ordered from him. No joke. Last week I was torn about what to order, and he reminded me that the last 4 times I'd been in, I'd ordered Rib Eyes and a Strip Steak (only once). I don't even remember when I had for breakfast this morning. The manager Jimmy's cool. He'll remember your name and shake your hand when you come in, and he likes to talk to the customers. They want their customers to be happy, so if your food isn't cooked right, they'll fix it immediately without any issues. EDIT: Another great waiter to ask for is Edel. I've been here quite a few times but this is my first review. Stopped in for dinner on Saturday night - our waitress was excellent - personable and very accommodating. My companion and I both enjoyed our meals - everything was prepared well. We had "breakfast for dinner" and enjoyed it. Omelets and poached eggs with the typical sides. We also bought some bakery sweets to take home - the chocolate peanut butter cake, a chocolate chip cookie, and a chocolate roll. All were good, although the chocolate roll typically has nuts and this one didn't -- it was just layers of puff pastry with a bit of chocolate in the inside and dipped on the ends. It was more of a wow factor due to its jumbo size rather than its taste. If you're in the area and haven't tried Suburban, you should check it out. BTW, the waffle fries are delicious! read more

I've heard great things about this place for years. The food seems VERY pricey for a local diner. The ambiance is great but the food was terrible. Ordered two cups of matzo ball soup which were beyond salty. My husband ordered a turkey burger that was also very salty and the kale was bitter beyond belief. Now I understand it can be bitter but this was yellow so obviously old and turned. I ordered the chili which was decent but again...salty. When we addressed it with the waiter (a very nice man) he said they don't use salt. Yikes that isn't even possible! Then the manager comes over and was...defensive about it. "That is kale" was his excuse for the horrible taste. Didn't crack a smile or friendly demenour at all. Although he offered to make another burger which we refused, he did not take the burger off of our bill and actually ignored us when we went to pay and never apologized. His rude attitude and the salt will have me avoid this diner in the future. read more

Just had dinner in the newly remodeled Suburban Diner and it was very disappointing. The place feels cramped and tight, and there is nothing to absorb sound, so it's very noisy. The decor is nothing if not blah. While the food was up to their usual quality, our waitress was on a different planet, and truly not up to the job. We waited over five minutes to place a drinks order, and the waitress only came back after we finished our meal and the plates were cleared to find out how we were doing. She was clearly not interested in her job. The Suburban Diner also needs to figure out whether it wants to be a bar or a diner as a huge space has been created for the bar area. The Suburban used to be our go to diner, but I think we'll shop around a bit, the Suburban has lost it's appeal. John K. read more

The Suburban Diner on Route 17 North is a modern retro diner with a classic, American menu, a bakery, and a fully stocked bar. The traditional diner options are still tops here--you dont want to miss the Greek platter: a triangle of moussaka, spinach pie, two skewers of pork souvlaki, stuffed grape leaves, feta cheese, and black olives. The portions are absolutely huge and I started slowing down maybe 1/3 through my meal. However, the eggplant parmesan had so many different flavors that it was near impossible to stop eating (hence why I ended up eating roughly 80% of the entire plate). Unfortunately towards the end some of the flavor on the eggplant part of the dish had diminished, but when the sauce was continuously paired with it it was beyond delicious. read more

Absolutely everything on my plate, eggs Benedict and homefires, had no flavor. The hollandaise sauce was tasteless as well as the homefries. Beautiful diner on the inside, but that's about it. Food is very mediocre, overpriced and they bang you on charging you extra for any little thing you try to add. We added avocado in an omelette and were charged four dollars just for that. $30 for breakfast seemed extremely expensive to me. My girlfriend & I recently went to the diner for dessert & tea. First of all the waitress we had had a nasty attitude & also didn't pay attention to our order. Second of all, redo the menu have the prices on the desserts & the drinks. This diner is not a five star diner so don't act like it is. People want to know what prices are. GET NEW MENUS THAT SHOW ALL THE PRICES. Who was the brainless wonder who decided you didn't need prices on the items. I hope it wasn't the guy that greeted you when the diner had the old look. Best diner around. The food is always fresh and delicious and the servers are always kind and attentive. Their take out is a little touch and go. I understand this is not an"take out" place, but when they don't seem to have a real method for take out orders. You call, they put you on hold for awhile, take your order, you go to pick it up, they send you to one counter, then go another. Just seems inefficient. However, once we actually eat the food it's delicious as always. Love going to Suburban! read more
