Family owned business with hand made tamales that are delicious, and their ice machine makes chipped/shaved ice! I got a spicy chipotle chicken and a sweet corn tamale. This is the sweet heat combo, it's fantastic. Richelle got a sweet corn tamale, with a steak and tilapia taco. The mild salsa for the taco had a purée texture and a little kick, I put it on my tamales. Richelle thought it was too spicy for her, it really wasn't. A storefront in a strip mall, the Tamale Place is an interesting location. Inside, order at the counter and it doesn't take long for them to pull your tamales, plate them and you're ready to eat. The current selection is on the board and I chose the "Hot & Spicy Pork" and a "Bean and Rice." A good mix as the hot and spicy was indeed both hot and spicy. It was very helpful to have a regular with some carbs to cut some of that heat. I am not a tamale expert and so I can't say that these were fantastic or that they exceeded expectations. Huge Tamales! They may not be exactly authentic, but the Tamales are fabulous and large. The commute is too far to go often but when we do we get at least an assorted dozen to freeze for future enjoyment. We saw this on Guy Feiri's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives the night before our Indy trip so knew we had to try it. It is a small spot in a strip mall by a liquor store so I think qualifies as a dive. You order at a counter and sit down and they deliver to your table. The food....omg I would be back weekly if we lived here. They had an amazing amount of flavors of tamales, even sweet ones. They had spicy or not spicy choices which was great. We had the spicy chipotle chicken tamale with a side of queso. Divine! Also beef tamales and a steak torta. I'd like to start off by saying I've been going to the Tamale place for over 9 years now! That should say quite a bit! My personal favorites would be the spicy chicken tamales, the spicy chicken nachos, and the chocolate tamales even though they usually don't have them because they're bought up so quickly. The service is always good and the food is usually ready pretty quickly as well. There definitely needs to be more than one location throughout Indy!!! read more

This is my new favorite lunch near my office in Speedway. It's kind of an interesting concept; you walk in and there's a little television screen High up, and to the right to tell you what types of tamales they have that day and how many are left. I've been trying something different every time I've visited. This time I tried the spicy pork and the green chicken enchiladas. I went with coworkers and we giggled because we got a little overboard on the queso and the chips. We ordered a large queso and a large bag of chips. We really love queso on everything so we should've just got a small bag of chips and a large container of queso... We had lots of leftover chips. We were not that impressed. I saw the episode on Diners, Drive-In and Dives and drove over 40 minutes to get there. When I got there, their tamales were sold out. They have tamales in their name but didn't even have any. I did have Spicy Chicken sandwich which was fine and my wife had a vegetarian taco, but for the prices paid, we were disappointed. When I got my food and started eating it, I was very disappointed. I'm from NY and don't have any expectation that I'll be in Indy anytime soon. I've been here about a half dozen times prior to my foodie stage of life. It always delivers. Came back today finally and got a pork with spicy green sauce and a chipotle chicken tamale. They were so good! A lot of tamales often are dry but these are moist and packed with incredible flavor. Service was prompt and I got my tamales after about 45 seconds of waiting. I took it to go but there's seating (occupancy max is 47, not sure why I know that). This is an Indianapolis institution at this point so try it sooner than later! read more

It has a better rating on the review not 5 star simply becasue those employees and people who eat inside need way more ventilation and air we chose to eat inside and it was hot like sweat drip from your forhead hot and humid the ceiling fans do no justice. If the plus up some simple floor stand fans or one shop size by the corner before going to the bathrooms that would help immensely indoor needs some love for customers and employees to bear the heat. This was my second time visiting this restaurant. The first time I went about 5 years ago, I didn't go early enough, and they'd sold out of a lot of options. The first time I went was because I saw they had been on Triple D. The second time is because I really wanted to see what the hype was. I drove into Indy from Chicago for two things only - to watch the solar eclipse and eat these tamales. I ordered the spicy chipotle chicken and beef in red sauce along with a side of elotes. These are the best tamales I've EVER had. We have tons of tamalerias in Chicago, and this tops those. The masa is so soft and delicious, and the filling has just the right amount of sauce, so it's not dry at all. The elotes were also surprisingly delicious! My husband had a spicy green pork tamale and a pork taco, and he says that was the best tamal he ever had. We liked it so much that we bought three bags of frozen tamales to bring back to Chicago with us! read more

I can say I was a little disappointed in this spot. I had been passing it a few times as I have a client out this way and I LOVE tamales. So seeing a spot called The Tamale Place I knew I was going to stop in one day to get a few. I finally stopped in, and the inside definitely didn't reflect the outside. It's a lot bigger than it looks as it goes deep towards the back. You're able to see all the food being made which adds a cool ambiance to the setting. I ordered the chipotle chicken tamale and the inside flavor was on point. The outside tamale part was over cooked and I found myself missing the soft, mush crumbly texture it typically has. I will say if you are looking for a specific tamale they have a very wide variety of flavors. They can sell out too so if you are wanting something specific I highly recommend calling it in to make sure it's there or ordering ahead of time. The service was quick, at least for me there wasn't a line when we got there. Our food came out in under 5 min which was nice because we were starving. I also had an order of elotes and while it was huge; the flavor was lacking. I almost wonder if it's canned corn versus a corn fresh off the cob which could make for the flavor in the actual dish. What a hidden gem!! The tamale place is so awesome not only for tamales but also bowls, nachos, and more. The options for tamales are endless and they even carry vegetarian friendly options, which is a win for me. You can get spicy ones, meat focused ones, corn, etc. Tamales are prepared daily so when they are out, they are out; however, from my experience they are very prepared with the amount they make and don't run out too fast. When you arrive at the restaurant you'll see a giant list of everything they current have available. They also sell giant bags of chips salsa/queso for a shareable option. Because of the availability they don't take online orders and you need to go in person. With that being said the service is pretty quick since the tamales are made ahead of time! Overall I was so impressed and I highly recommend. If you don't like tamales there's plenty of options but I HIGHLY recommend getting several tamales to share. They are very large and a great bang for your buck! read more

Look. I've lived my entire life in Indiana. Do I know what authentic tamales taste like? Not at all. My mother's only experience with tamales was the ones that come in a jar/can. (I shiver at the thought, but she said they were a treat when she was a kid). All I know is that I love these things. I've tried tamales at authentic mexican restaurants, and typically the masa exterior is dry and the chicken is tough & dry. These are moist, flavorful, and I love them. The green chicken is my favorite. I will say that I am not a fan of their chips & salsa. And the rice doesn't do anything for me. Can I explain it? No. I just don't care for it. Give it a try & see if it's to your taste, but this is to remind myself to stick w/ just the tamales & not get the combo plate. read more

Tamales are perhaps one of my favorite things to eat, so of course I had to go to a place known for them. Upon entry I realized I had forgot my phone so that I could take pictures which prompted me to run back out and away from an already long line. When I came back the line was shorter. The service was okay, but only because the people there reacted as if I have already been there and knew what everything was. I found that behavior to be a bit rude, but then said to myself that the food must be good. The first item I tried was the fire pork roasted red tamales in the banana leaf. I would not call them spicy at all. In fact they were extremely mild compared to other tamales I've had. Delicious, but a disappointment in the spice department. These were definitely crafted by someone who understands tamales and marketed for people that want to feel as if they are getting something spicy. Next I tried the spicy pork in green. These had quite a bit more kick and fit my expectations. They were not the spiciest I've had, but fit. If you don't like spice then there is no way you can handle this tamale. If you do then you feel get full flavor with your spice. Last I tried the beef in red. It wasn't as good at the others, but not bad. It reminded me of a beef roast without the spice. Which was a disappointment, but not a total heartbreak. If I'm the area I will come here again just to try some more flavors of their tamales. I'm also a bit curious about their nachos. read more
