We are visiting Maine on vacation with another family. We had 3 kids in tow. Our server Jess was attentive and accommodating. She made sure the kids had their drinks and food right away. She even went as far as to offer them bocce ball to play out on the lawn while the grownups finished up their cocktails. The food and drinks were delicious and atmosphere quite lovely. We got off to a clunky start. There's signs everywhere saying see hostess at end of tent. So I walked around the tent. There was no hostess. I was confused. I went in the building and ran into a waitress. I asked her and she told me go see the hostess at the tent. So I go back over the tent wait a couple minutes and then finally one of the waiters asked me if I'm being helped. I tell him that I have reservations at 7:30 and he tells me that I need to see the hostess. I said who's that? So finally I figure out that the hostess is this little old lady that has been cleaning these chairs and tables the whole time. So I wait for her to get done. The waiter that talked to me before goes talks to her and points over at me. She gets done and goes to the other side if the tent and takes two guests to seats. Now I'm like what the heck. So I go to the other side of the tent cause clearly I'm on the wrong side. Then she ignores me on that side! So after about 15 minutes, she comes over and she's very pleasant and sees that I have my reservation and takes me to my table. I'm really not sure what the issue was. It was pretty strange. All the service after that was perfectly normal. And like I said, even after she finally was taking me to my table she was super nice and got me a glass of water. So I got a Maine root beer because it's Maine. I got clam chowder because it's Maine. The clam chowder was excellent. Then I got the haddock sandwich, which was so good. The breading was so light that the fish just fell apart when you bit into the sandwich. Just really well cooked. I used to love when things were heavily breaded, but I think I've gone the total opposite nowadays. There was also live music tonight, which was really fun. The outside seating is just so enjoyable on a nice upper 60s night with a little breeze. read more

My sisters and I were driving around enjoying our vacation in Maine. We stopped at the Chapman Cottage and decided to have some appetizers before our dinner at a different restaurant. When we approached the hostess stand we were asked if we had reservations. She hemmed and hawed and after a little bit we were shown to a table on the front patio. Mind you, there was no one here and all the tables were open!! It was so nice and peaceful dining on the porch of such a pretty old bed & breakfast. They have rocking chairs located around the property so you can relax. They have an amazing lawn that rolls downhill to the road. Beautiful site. We ordered a couple of drinks and appetizers and were happy. The crab dip wasn't too crabby for my non-seafood tongue. We had to order more bread, though, to finish it off. The candied bacon was an interesting appetizer and I am happy I ordered it. I enjoyed my fancy drink. My sisters has white wine. I would definitely come here again. Lost a star because of the rude woman at the hostess stand. Although, by the time we left the place was packed. read more

This is one of the easiest reviews I'll ever have the pleasure of writing. We'd seen the yellow clad Chapman's Cottage en route to the Oxford Harbor Inn where we'd booked a couple night's lodging. We asked at check in if there was a good place for seafood and there was little hesitation...Chapmans. We decided to head over and we're pleased to learn they had a Happy Hour both on drinks and food. Perfect. We were seated on the raised front porch with a lovely view before us, shaded by our bright red table umbrella. We both ordered and enjoyed the strawberry rhubarb sangria made with a sparkling rose. A+. These were $5 each. A super deal...ohhhhh, but it gets even better! We went on to order and enjoy cottage chowder a buttery, somewhat over salted, with big chunks of hake and diced bacon. We had the Tijuana charred corn with chipotle chile powder, cilantro and cheese crumbles and finally, my clear favorite, grilled watermelon with ricotta fritters. The combination of crispy sweet fried cheese paired with sweet grilled watermelon triangles was just so pleasing. Simple, clean and something I'll want to return for. The salad with mixed greens, mint, pistachios and pomegranate molasses was terrific as well and that was under the watermelon & cheese! Kyle, our server, was pleasant, attentive and efficient. Never intruded and yet always there when we needed him...for the second round of sangria! Don't miss this place. Delicious and EVERY happy hour dish and drink was $5 or less! A real find! read more

We recently stayed at the Chapman Cottage for 2 nights and loved it. We ate dinner one night in the tavern downstairs and the food was spectacular and the service was even better. (Props to Amanda our great server and local expert! She was the best) I don't normally eat seafood but I had the scallops and they were amazing. We arrived about 4pm after driving around and was greeted right away, and shown around the bar area and dinning room area. Before 5 app specials were good. Tuna taco are great, steak skewers are very good. Shrimp tempura was chefs special, 2 shrimp for 5$ was kinda a rip off. Wife ordered lobster pizza and came loaded with avocado and lobster. I ordered seafood bake and received 4 small pieces of lobster, 5 scallops, and 8 pieces of fish. My wife received more lobster on her cheaper meal than I did in my most expensive item on menu. The menu also doesn't state lobster pieces, this is misleading. If you are wanting Maine lobster, stick with cheaper meals, you will get more. read more

Loved everything about the place! Friendly service, tasty food, and pub style atmosphere

The service is excellent. The setting is pleasant. But our Sunday evening dinner was bland at best--especially considering the price. There are no side-dish substitutions allowed, so if you have an allergy (as I do), you end up eating a really blah meal. My partner does not have food allergies, but his side dish of potatoes was cold with black spots and the main dish of scallops mediocre at best. I think the topper was the invitation to add $10 to support the kitchen staff's after-work drinks. I don't run a restaurant, but I have worked in more than one, and we never expected the already overpriced customer to pay part of the cost of employing kitchen staff--or help to provide their beverages. Stopped in without reservations. We had stayed there years ago. The updates to the house are spectacular. Beautiful gardens. Outdoor furnishings and gardens are gorgeous. There were four of us. We split the avocado fries and tuna tacos. Entrees were lobster roll(brioche) Mediterranean shrimp and two fish and chips. All servings were generous and everything was delicious. The staff were friendly but not intrusive. We sat on front deck overlooking spacious lawn and enjoyed a beautiful sunset. We will definitely be returning! read more

From the top shelf, Chef Clark, to the hostess with the mostess, Edie and the best waitress ever Meagan........ we had the best experience ever!!!! My mom has COPD and needed special accommodations and the staff was so unbelievably gracious. That is not always the case when we take mom out to dinner so you can't imagine how grateful we all were with the special treatment for mom. We came here on Friday night and I gave the place a 5 star review for food and service. We liked it so much, we invited local friends from town back with us on Sunday. The experience was totally opposite. We arrived at 6pm and the hostess told us we had a 20 minute wait. No problem. Then once our parties table was ready and cleared she told us they just weren't ready to serve us and we could not sit down. The place by the way was EMPTY there was only one other couple seated in the back next to where our table was supposed to be. When asked why we could not sit she just said the restaurant is not ready to serve food at this time and she would not know when they would be ready. She was very rude and her explanation made no sense. It was 6pm on a Sunday how could you not be ready to serve food? We were embarrassed we brought our friends there and were treated so unkindly so we left. read more

We have been here many times its usually excellent. We went recently for our anniversary and the quality just wasn't as good as usual. We constantly had to ask for more water (it was hot and sunny on the deck) all the other tables had large pitchers of water on their table. I think the worst part was that our waiter kept putting his book down the back of his pants - gross. Sorry but I don't want my waiter touching that and then touching my food and drinks. read more

What a great place!! Love the food, drinks and service! From the attentive hostess/jack of all trades to the amazing food, we had a great time! The bartender crafted amazing and unique cocktails. The waiter was so helpful and pleasant! I loved the menu and it's small plate options! The fish chowder was so flavorful and the small salads were so fresh! I got the fish tacos which are my go to when they are offered. A+ my fiancé got the veal with pesto pasta and that too was an A+. The rhubarb pie/cheesecake was amazing and even sweeter with the surprises birthday serenade from hostess, waiter and rest of dining room! Just okay. Maybe they were having an off night, but some things are just a bit mind numbing. Arrived a bit after 6:30pm and had an odd host exchange where she tried to get us to sit outside after we said "no thank you" repeatedly. The three of us wound up in cozy bar area at a couple tables squeezed together. Took about twenty minutes to get drinks. And, again, we were in the bar area. That said, the drinks were fantastic. Made by a pro. Our server was nice, but clearly brand new, and clearly had not been trained well on the menu. Each question we asked sent her back of house to get an answer. What I find really off is when we inquired about the Robert's sauce on the steak, she went out back, came back and told us the chef said to tell us it was Robert's sauce and to see what we said. That's just weird, or really smug of the chef, or really sad that they didn't really the info. She left and came back again with a description. And, we ordered apps that never came as apps because the kitchen did not deduce that we would want chowder and bruschetta before three full plate dinners. That's simply rough teamwork, oversight and attention. All in all, the food was a bit bland. Chowder lacked proper seasoning. The smoked salmon bruschetta was a standout. Sirloin was cooked to temp, but lackluster in quality, with sides of roasted asparagus and potatoes as basic plate fillers. And that sauce? Had it in the side. Sweet/mustardy and a bit powerful. In my opinion, a great steak lives on its own without the need for a powerful sauce. Veal scallopini was a standard rendition with tender deep fried veal over linguine. But, again it lacked seasoning. What I find interesting is that during a meal of mishaps, no manager ever made an appearance on the floor. We saw one woman in regular clothing (meaning not a restaurant uniform) come out from back of house, get a soda from behind the bar, and promptly returned to back of house without a glance at the dining room. The bartender was gracious and made the call to remove apps from our bill. That was a very nice gesture. Bottom line, this place needs to step up their game to survive past summer. There are easy wins that they need to capitalize on. read more
