Tavern does an excellent job of drinks and dinner. As a testament to the quality of the Tavern, we visited for dinner on Friday and again on Saturday. After a weekend in Omaha a couple of months ago, Mrs. R and I talked with some of our Yelp! friends about another weekend someplace nearby. We chose Tulsa as it's around 3.5-4 hours away from Kansas City, and it has become home to a collection of great and hip downtown establishments. The Tavern (alternately "The Tavern on Brady" or "Brady Tavern") is a cozy bar and restaurant that maintains classy elements without coming across as snooty. On our way to Tulsa, our traveling companion Jen D. mentioned that the Tavern was the only place that she had previously visited that she wanted to be sure to visit again. After checking into our hotel we headed over for our reservation. Upon stepping in during the evening, one notices the moderate lighting and the cozy décor. To give the "pub feel" (as it considers itself a modern interpretation of the classic neighborhood pub) the Tavern has walls covered with framed portraits and landscapes, and a central low dividing wall has stacks of hardbound books, including some old law reporters. We were sat at a four-person table in the middle of the dining room. Other seating includes a long bench along the wall with 4-person tables (that could presumably be put together for larger parties) and several six person round and square tables in the middle of the room, so The Tavern could seemingly handle larger parties with ease. We perused the menu and ordered drinks. Mrs. R. went with a drink called "Bells and Whistles", a bourbon drink featuring a bell pepper syrup that gave the drink an overall sweet-spiciness that was very tasty. I ordered one of these for my second drink, and I don't even like bell peppers. Jen D. ordered a "Sweet Caroline", which used Bombay Sapphire Gin and featured a blackberry shrub. I started with a Goose Island Sophie, a saison beer. Later, following our meal, we ordered more drinks, where I got the aforementioned "Bells and Whistles", Jen D. ordered another "Sweet Caroline" and Mrs. R. ordered a Bengali Gimlet, which used Tanqueray Rangpur and curried nectar. She was taken aback and though it had too much of a gin flavor (she was expecting more lime off of the Rangpur) but I thought it tasted very much of the curried nectar. It smelled like delicious Indian food. We ordered dinner - Mrs. R. and Jen D. ordered the tavern burger, and I ordered the fish and chips. The fish and chips were good - two large pieces of battered and fried whitefish (probably cod) accompanied by a house-made smooth tartar sauce and matchstick potatoes. I would say each piece of fish was the size of a corndog, so 4-6 oz. I'm usually used to a larger potato with fish and chips, like a steak fry, but the matchstick potatoes were good and manageable with a fork. On the other hand, the burgers were fantastic, and these are the reason Jen D. wanted to come to the Tavern. According to their information, the patty is also a proprietary grind of short-rib and brisket . Each burger is a 1/4-1/3 lbs. patty on a brioche bun, with a mushroom-cream-cognac reduction and Stilton cheese. A truly excellent burger. I had a taste of Mrs. R's and I agreed as to their greatness. The burgers also come with the matchstick fries. To make a great burger even better, the Tavern does a sort-of reverse happy-hour on burgers, and they're half price after 9 p.m. - so we came back for that on Saturday night. One of the highlights of the trip was getting to enjoy my own tavern burger. In addition to the burgers and fish, we ordered Kalettes and Angry Mac & Cheese for the table. Kalettes are a newer hybrid of kale (the vegetable of the hour) and Brussels sprouts (the recent cruciferous crusader). The Kalettes were served cooked with bacon, but I felt that the bacon ended up overshadowing their flavor. I know bacon is used as a dangling carrot to make some seemingly-unappetizing foods appealing, but Brussels sprouts and Kale are great on their own or with a light touch of pork, so these were a little disappointing. As for the Angry Mac & Cheese, these seemed interesting at the beginning, until I ferreted out exactly what they reminded me of - it's mac & cheese made with spicy Ro*tel queso dip. Not bad, but not exactly what one would expect in a place that puts itself out as being a bit more of a sophisticated dining establishment. In short, come to the Tavern, enjoy the cocktails, get the burger, and all's the better if you get it half-price after 9:00. I came here for an early dinner before seeing a show at the Brady Theater. When I first entered and asked for a table I was told I could sit at the bar but they did not have a table available. I went to to the bar, ordered my iced tea and fish and chips and looked around. There were quite a few empty tables. The hostess lied. When the food arrived the fish was awesome. Two huge pieces and very tasty. The chips, however were shoestring potatoes. Not a fitting pairing to the fish. I finished my meal and asked for my check and I paid in cash. When the bartender gave me my change, he shorted me. He made sure he gave me enough ones to tip him but he omitted giving me any coins. It was less than a dollar so not worth making a scene over. Instead, I reduced his tip by a dollar and lowered the rating of this review. Don't lie to your customers and don't short change us. We deserve better. read more

I arrived at 5:15...before the dinner rush, so my experience may be different than when the place is busy & servers are bustling. Service is great...knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive server. Food is wonderful!! Great timing on when dishes came to table. Tomato bisque soup was served hot (I detest warm tomato soup). Has good texture..thick as it should be...nice flavoring. Filet is cooked exactly to my specifications..good quality beef & flavorful. Carrots tender, but not mushy...good flavor. Demi glaze good accompaniment but not over powering. Relaxed, hip environment with limited gourmet menu. We enjoyed the sweet bacon popcorn to start- a must try. The fish and chips was spot on and delicious. The duck pot pie was not my favorite- I didn't like the seasoning. I also was not a huge fan of the chocolate torte dessert- it was dry and without ice cream. I don't think either of them were bad, just not up my alley. Our waitress was attentive and very sweet. This would be a romantic place to take someone on a first date. read more

I eat here about 1-2 times a week! The food is absolutely amazing. The menu changes seasonally and offers new and exciting foods every few months. Great drink selections! Best Main Dish: The Fish and Chips. This dish takes me back to my days in England! Best Side Dish: The Angry Mac and Cheese. This stuff is so addictive, I get it every time! Best Meal: Brunch. I loved this place. It was great food, drink and atmosphere. The temp was a little chilly so take a sweater ladies. Started off with a cold hearty Bloody Mary. They made their own mix and topped it off with salty salami and smoked Gouda. For brunch I had warm cheesy grits that were cooked to perfection. They were a larger texture that made the dish more interesting. The shrimp was lightly seasoned and grilled. Last but not least, a perfect sunny egg sat atop this wonderful creation. We started out with a couple cocktails, and I loved mine. It's called an "Old Cuban", and it basically taste like a Mojito on flavor steroids. My friend, and I ordered some deviled eggs. They were out super fast. I liked the spicy mustard, but I really missed the lack of other components. We then has some smoked trout dip. I wouldn't say I loved it, but the more I ate the more I liked it. For the main course we ordered the roast chicken, and the bone in pork chop to share. I LOVED THE CHOP! The chicken was juicy, but I prefer the skin to be just a little more crisp. All the vegetables accompanying our main dishes were well seasoned, and well cooked. We ordered some wine before our dinner, and it seemed to take quite some time for it to get there. They had an abundance of wait staff, and the chef came to talk to us about the food while we were finishing dinner. He mentioned that he had ran out of chicken, and didn't have time to brine them for as long. In the first week of operations that kind of thing (to me) is very understandable. I always enjoy when people want feedback on their food. It was very cozy, and dimly lit. It would be a very nice place to go on a date. I think with the addition of another bartender on the weekend the service could go much more smoothly. I will be going back. The chef also mentioned that their menu will be very seasonal, and that he was looking forward to the coming farmers market. (On prices: I honestly don't remember how much most of the things we ordered were. I do know that I thought it a little silly to charge $3 for a single egg split in half with some mayo & spicy mustard piped filling. We went in at an odd time (3pm), so that's always a risk. Overall service was good, even for a shift change. For drinks we had the Problem Solver (nice Manhattan spin) and the Orchard Sour, both very tasty. Deviled eggs were great, but a little too salty. Turns out they were a harbinger of the salt level for the whole meal, which is too bad, since the everything would have really been excellent without that issue. The spring salad was super and the burger was also solid. We were both unimpressed with the mac and cheese (took only a couple of bites), but if you're into a very saucy/rich mac, then maybe you'll dig it - just wasn't for us. When my boyfriend and I walked in there was an awful mildew smell. This was our first time here. We usually like to sit at the bar but due to the smell we decided to sit in the dining area. My boyfriend ordered the tater tot poutine; the presentation could use a bit of work. It was a bit salty and over powered by parsley. I ordered the queso birria; the birria was over cooked and dry. This use to be one of my favorite places in town, but upon a recent trip home I was very disappointed. The prices are at the high end for what anyone should pay in Tulsa. Some of the dishes I'm sure are worth it, but from what I could tell by what we had the quality has gone significantly down. I had craved their bacon popcorn for weeks and their mac and cheese and found both to be repulsive. The mac and cheese was gritty and soggy. It lacked the stringy and complex cheese flavor that I remember, and the popcorn was stale. As remembered though, the specialty cocktail menu was excellent, and the bartender was a true mixologist, able to do more than a liquor with mixer frat-drinks. I am a fan of their Manahattans and Gimlets. Nothing is special enough about the experience or atmosphere to warrant the price tag without food that delivers. read more

I went here yesterday because someone on my plane ride here told me about this place. I checked the reviews and they were good. So here I am... I walked in and it was like 7 ppl at the bar. I sat at the bar, the bartender was nice BUT NOT friendly. I ordered the bacon popcorn, deviled eggs, and the Mac and cheese. Lets start with the good.... The deviled eggs were the bomb!!! Now on to the not so good.....The bacon popcorn had a good taste w/the sweet kettle corn and the salty bacon BUT my popcorn was stale. I asked for another one and when it came out it was a few on the top that was crispy but once I started eating into it this batch was stale too. The Mac and cheese was TOO SALTY!!! I don't think that I will be back to this place. Good luck to others that go here. Hopefully your experience and food will be better then mine. read more

THIS ADDRESS IS WRONG! If you are looking for The Tavern before November 15th, they are not at 201 N Main. They are in a temp location on Archer. After calling we found them. Their temp location is very temp and the menu is pretty limited. My sister and I shared the orange dream pancakes and the breakfast sandwich. Both were yummy. The sausage has some real kick, which I like. Read several yelpers say they like the breakfast potatoes but I didn't think they were anything special. I did like the idea of throwing some jalapeno in them so I'll be doing that now when I make them at home. I'd like to try it again sometime when they are back in their real spot with their full menu....if I'm ever back in Tulsa. read more

Have to say the pork chop dinner was one of the best meals I've ever had IN MY LIFE!!! So flavorful with the mushroom gravy and fried onions, green beans and mashed potatoes. Are you hungry yet? I know I'm going back for this dinner. The bar and wait staff were all very nice, helpful and professional. We even got to eat outside on Main Street while it is temporarily closed through October. I really enjoyed this place. Its in a neat part of town and and appreciated the ambiance. Me and my girlfriend tried a bunch of the starters, a few I recommend were the Mac and cheese (amazing and spicy), the frites (thin, stringy and delicious) and a cup of the tomato soup (I could have done without it) For main courses I had the asparagus, fried pancetta, and almond salad that was excellent. Went for the first time on our anniversary trip and was very disappointed in the food. Bartender was very nice but our deviled eggs tasted old. The steak special was extremely over priced. The steak was ordered mid rare and came out rare and sliced with one side seared. As well as the meat was so salty it was almost unbearable. The béarnaise sauce was cold and flavorless. Went in around 4pm for an early bite on our 18th wedding anniversary. Even though no one was there they claimed they were booked up and only had a table by the bathrooms so we sat down. Server herself was pleasant. We both ordered the burger since we didn't feel very welcome and decided to splurge somewhere else. The burgers were good but not great. Ordered both medium rare but they came out medium well. At this point why even say anything, so we ate and enjoyed our day regardless of the staff trying to take away our smiles. Seemed like all the staff stomped by at some point while we were there, one started sweeping under our table while we were eating and near the end of the meal someone opened the blinds in the front so we could have the sun in our eyes. Sigh. Took the check, paid, tipped 20% since it wasn't particularly the server's fault and left feeling slighted. How would you feel to be forced to eat by the bathroom in an empty dining room? They definitely need a new D. ;) And it's rather telling that they were empty even though it was between services. read more

While visiting Tulsa my husband and I were looking for a nice place for our anniversary dinner and went to the Tavern based on Yelp reviews. Our server was competent, and able to answer questions about the menu, but did not smother us with attention (which was nice). The marinated olives were a wonderful appetizer, hubby enjoyed his goulash and my filet was probably the best I have ever had. But honestly, the highlight of the evening was by far, the cocktails, specifically, the Bengali Gimlet. I have never tasted anything like it, and three months after that evening my husband still talks about it. We do not usually spend that much on a meal out, but it was a special occasion. When you drop close to $200 with tip for a meal and drinks you hope that it is a memorable experience, and this most definitely was. read more

Fantastic place to brunch here in downtown Tulsa. This is my first trip to Tulsa and the food has been all above expectations. This place is no different. I had a great bowl of Tomato soup and then the shrimp and grits. Both awesome. Our group of bartenders chose this restaurant to enjoy dinner after attending a friend's funeral. Despite the incredibly negligent and slow service we still tipped the server well and were going to brush it off. To add insult to injury, on our way out the door, the bartender condescendingly shouted, "Make good life decisions!" (Presumably because we had been drinking and he could tell). I came back inside and asked him if he had really just said that, to which he replied, "I say that to everyone." If that's true, perhaps it's time to retire the phrase and reflect on your hospitality standards. Sunday brunch: had the tomato bisque with grilled cheese sandwich and bacon. The tomato bisque was GREAT. The grilled cheese sandwich was just okay. But what you should order at Sunday brunch is the beignets with Dulce de Leche sauce. OMG. The beignets were crisp on the outside, fluffy and pillowy inside--served piping hot. Not greasy at all. These beignets are much better than Cafe du Monde's in New Orleans! Believe it. I asked our waitstaff to pass my compliments to the kitchen staff who prepared the beignets. The pastry chef came out to thank me for the compliment. Service was attentive and unobtrusive. read more

Because we have been eating here frequently for several years we expected delicious, quality food when we ordered brunch takeout this morning. We ordered two of the "chef's choice of grilled cheese with tomato bisque." On the menu there is pictured a perfectly crisped sandwich with cheese, pesto, tomatoes etc..but in reality our sandwiches were slices of white sandwich bread that hadn't been toasted, with a slice of American cheese that hadn't even melted. (See picture!) Michael and I threw both sandwiches in the trash after one bite and shared one cup of soup because they forgot to give us our second. We also ordered pimento cheese grits that we never received with our order. Hate to give such a terrible review to a restaurant that has always been so good to us in the past but I will never order take out from them again. read more

The Tavern is a wonderful place for a few reasons: it has a great bar, and serves up a variety of craft cocktails, their Negroni being one of my favorites in town. They also carry several import beers at any given time, and their food is always good. The kitchen is open pretty late every night, later on weekends, and they have an amazing burger special after 9pm every day. The atmosphere is casual but elegant, with dark wood paneling and various artwork hanging on all walls, and the best wallpaper in town in the men's room. The service is usually pretty quick and friendly. The location is perfectly situated in the Brady District, so it's good for before or after a concert or other event going on in the area. You can just come for food and drinks with friends or a date, then venture about before or after to see all this great area in Tulsa has to offer. read more

Came for their brunch service and my goodness was I impressed. We came right at opening so a table was immediately ready and service was speedy. Their mimosa had a nice touch of orange liqueur, giving it an extra kick. I don't have many words to describe how good the food was outside of just saying "it was amazing." Coming to Tulsa for Labor Day weekend has been nothing but good decisions, especially in regards to the food. read more
