Yesterday's lunch was at Malfi Enoteca. While most restaurants open at 11:00 for lunch, Malfi doesn't open until 11:30. I was immediately seated and given a menu as the restaurant was nearly empty when I arrived a few minutes after opening. I chose the Tagliatelle bolognese pasta for lunch. This pasta consisted of egg noodles served with a meat sauce. The thin, airy noodles and the hearty meat sauce combined to make a refreshing lunch perfect for a warm summer day. As my meal progressed, the restaurant began to fill, and when I left, there was a lively atmosphere as the restaurant was mostly full. The place was about 2/3 full and we were immediately greeted by the hostess upon arriving. The decor is similar to when the establishment was Freya. Very casual. The menus are on paper (think newspaper) and broken into pasta and not pasta for food. We enjoyed an appetizer, salad, and each had our own entrees. The pasta dishes were definitely 5 stars! Although a small menu, everything is done well! Only reason for my 4 star overall is 2 things. Menus - ours had some dried food that had been splattered on them. Malfi is a new restaurant in heart of Brookside. The vibes are costal-chic and resemble the Almalfi Coast. I loved the color palate they chose inside. It's an Italian restaurant with house-made pastas. They have these cool newspaper menus. We tried a bit of everything. Carpaccio, Cesar salad with chicken, bolognese, rigatoni vodka pasta with meatballs. All dishes were 10/10 in flavor! We all agreed we thought our server acted as she didn't want to be there which was unfortunate because we loved every other aspect of the restaurant. I recommend this restaurant for date nights, date days, lunch with friends. We went for lunch and had reservations but probably didn't need them because it wasn't extremely busy. My husband and I ate here tonight and we left unhappy with our experience. We arrived and got seated immediately after having a reservation which they prefer and that's totally fine. Our server came to our table shortly after and recommended an appetizer so we tried it. I want to firstly say that it took a very long time for the appetizer just to come out. We got the white bean dip that she raved about and it wasn't very good, definitely didn't live up to the hype. The sourdough bread it was served with was delicious though. We ordered our entrees with our appetizer and they took even longer to come out. My husband got the BUCATINI pasta and it was very mediocre (the noodles were made perfect) but the sauce was very bland and needed work. I got the TAGLIOLINI pasta and added grilled chicken. The pasta itself was cooked perfect but the sauce again bland and was even watery. The chicken was overcooked and dry which was disappointing considering it costs an arm and a leg for a small cut of chicken. Our server was also terrible. She checked on us 2 separate times throughout the entire experience and we spent a good hour and half there, she was VERY hard to locate and it was rather annoying to have to search for her when we needed something. We didn't expect to be this disappointed for a meal that we spent $64 alone without the tip. Needless to say we will not be going back. I don't recommend this place. read more

I didn't even know this location (formerly Freya) had reopened. The Hubs surprised me with a pre-Valentine's Day dinner here. This spot is definitely experiencing a "hot & new" reputation so I would highly recommend reservations. That being said, our reservation was for 8 pm and we were seated promptly but around 8:30 the place was emptying out. There were a few spots at the bar when we were seated. Maybe roll the dice... I love the decor, beachy but minimal. Definitely not over the top. The signage for the bathrooms is so cute! Trunks for one and a bikini for the other. I would never have known Freya was here. The bean dip was good and the bread is amazing. I would have liked some more of that bread with our entrees. I really thought everything was priced well. Our entrees were around $15. I had the Bucatini (with basil cream, pesto and whipped burrata). Really delicious! We tried the panna cotta for dessert. It was good but I wish we had tried something else. The fruit "conserva" seemed like dried cherries. The cherries were a good compliment to the panna cotta. I want the ricotta cake on our next visit. I also want to just sit and nosh on the appetizers--some more of that bean dip with Arancini and the Malfi Tomato Toasts and the Pork & Beef meatballs. Reminds me so much of the Italian coast! Laid back style, but so chic. We went very early and did manage to get a table but I recommend reservations for anytime after 5. It does take a while, but it was so relaxing we didn't even notice the time flying by. I recommend dressing up a bit, we thought it was more casual and felt underdressed. The kale salad was a pretty basic salad that was masterfully executed. I would get that every time, but also would like to try the arugula salad. The bolognese had fresh pasta and was absolutely the most delicious pasta dish I've had outside Italy. The pasta is exactly what it should be. Soft but with a slight bite. The creamy basil pasta also had fresh pasta but was our least favorite. Almost too creamy, there was no other flavor present. It needed some other flavor to elevate it. We put some black pepper on it but it needed more help. The pesto pasta was a premade pasta, but I really enjoyed the chewiness of that. It's a different texture than the fresh and I liked having the variety. Delicious flavor. The ricotta cake is an absolute treat, easily shared. Not very sweet, love that crunchy bottom, reminds me of a creme brulee. I literally cannot wait to go back (better dressed). It's pricey, but it's very much worth it. Perfect to celebrate something. I went to Malfi with some of my girlfriends and it was not a pleasant experience. It took us 15 mins to get our drinks that we ordered when our server first met us. Then we placed our order for food and it took 35-40mins to come out. The food was great, unbelievably pasta. But the service was absolutely terrible. Our server could not split our checks, and then when we tried to use the online service it didn't work. We ended up having to stay much longer after finishing with our meal to figure out the payment. Our server was kind in the process but very unhelpful. We kept having to ask her how to proceed and she had absolutely no clue. I honestly haven't been this frustrated with a dining experience in a while. Overall food was great but I would never come back because of how poor the service is. read more

It wasn't overly busy so I don't think the reservation was needed but I can see the need on a busy weekend. The interior is open and bright with natural light and the decor is simple and fun. Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. It is a unique choice for the menu to be a small newspaper. The food - we started with the white bean dip and it was yummy. The sourdough was a good compliment, we did have to ask for more bread. The Caesar salad was really good - the dressing flavor light but the right flavor notes. The bread crumbs instead of bigger piece of croutons gave each bite an added texture. The chicken was excellent with the white beans. My friend really enjoyed her pasta. Her mom said the salmon was cooked excellently but that the side with her dish was cold (it was supposed to be cold) but she wasn't sure if she liked the hot and cold combo. For a place that claims to be fresh and authentic this is probably the second to last place I'd choose to go for Italian in the area. Even factoring in the premium of being on Brookside, the prices here are way too high at almost $20 for a pasta dish, that isn't even a hearty serving and comes with nothing. Proteins are extra and even bread is extra. I couldn't believe $4 for a side of bread...which consisted of 4 half-slices of grilled sourdough. At least the bread was good at that price...but sourdough with Italian? Even more outrageous was the $14 trifecta of golf-ball sized breadcrumbs they try to pass off as Arianchini (rice balls). I've had many a rice ball in my life, and they contain, well, rice, and are generally the size of my fist for $5, maybe $8 at a nicer place or food truck. According to our waiter these were made with rice flour...which is not the same thing, and had a trace amount of cheese. The pastas themselves ranged from OK to just disappointing. Speaking of waiter, we do a late lunch and while he was nice, for a place with only 2 tables seated we went far too long between checkups. The restaurant itself is very much in the contemporary vein of the neighborhood. It's very minimalist. Nice, but we struggled to tie the decor to the Amalfi Coast...it looked as tho someone just put "rustic Italian Restaurant Pottery Barn shopping list" into ChatGPT and went with it. read more

We started with a reasonable bottle of Chianti, and shared the white bean dip as a starter. So delicious. For mains I had the bucatini with pesto and it was perfect: flavorful and cooked al dente.
