Absolutely wonderful service at the bar. Drinks came fast. We enjoyed our Beet Berry salad. & the meatball appetizer to share. Also split the impossible burger. Everything tasted absolutely delicious . Flavorful and fresh. Reasonably priced. Favorite part was getting a tour of the "fresco painting done by Edward Hicks. Worst service ever (09/29/25) They took 25 minutes to get my daughter a diet coke. There was no silverware. We had to get it from another table. They got our side orders wrong. We had to ask three times for tabasco sauce. They charged us for an item they were out of. We asked multiple times until we got extra napkins. And after all this, they didn't even discount our bill. We'd been coming to this place for years, but never again. This was pathetic. read more

This is perhaps the only true bar in Newtown. Not a sports bar or a gastropub. This is an old school dive bar, but in a good way! This bar usually attracts an older crowd. We have had food here which is shockingly good. The opportunities to improve include: live music is too loud at times for how close they are set-up in relation to the bar. The atmosphere at Temperance House is upscale, peaceable kingdom murals, fireplace, linen table cloths. The menu doesn't match the atmosphere. Much of the food choices are salads, burgers and sandwiches. We ordered turkey club and found it to unsatisfying. The wait staff seam inexperienced and largely uninterested in their jobs. Prices are reasonable, but you can find better food for the same money elsewhere in Newtown. read more

We sat at the bar 8-10 minutes before we even saw the bartender. And the wait time for the food was long. We ordered Mac & Cheese, a burger and appetizers of mozzarella triangles and chicken strips. The apps were the issue. The chicken strips looked like 'popcorn' chicken glazed in a tangy yet sassy sauce. But were kinda dry. The bartender/server/busser/cook took it off our bill. The mozzarella triangles were good but not hot. Maybe 5° above room temperature. But they were tasty so I ate them. Here's the big rub. There was a 76' and Eagles game on. The room was filling up and it was just the 1 guy doing it all. He's not the issue. He worked hard. But he could've used help. read more

My table had to send food back because of an allergen we did not know would be on what we ordered (ingredients weren't disclosed in the menu) and were basically punished by the server/bartender for doing so. He said he would not charge us for it and received a non-itemized receipt for our order. We then asked for an itemized receipt from the other bartender, just to find out he charged us for it! I'm not sure where to begin on this one. In my 46 years of walking the planet, I have never had such poor service or food. When we went, it wasn't busy, and our waitress barely acknowledged our existence, and when we showed up, she simply threw the utensils on the table, dropped the glasses there along with a pitcher of water, and walked away, didn't even acknowledge us, or asked us if we wanted drinks. She left us one menu to look at. And it took nearly 30 minutes to order our food. When I did order a drink, I ordered a Manhattan with rye. What I got was straight up a glass of pure well whiskey. When we did get our food, it was undercooked for several of us, and the plates came out one at a time with a gap of about 22 minutes between the first and last plate. Only five of us were sitting at the table. The waitress was incredibly rude and never checked in to see if we needed anything else during the time we're eating our dinner. This review doesn't do it justice to describe how awful the experience was, but I would never recommend this place in 1 million years. It's a shame because we were looking to take my mother out for a nice cozy evening and a local restaurant. But I wouldn't even send my worst enemy to the temperance house. Absolutely giving this my lowest possible recommendation. Honestly, I can't imagine an experience being any worse than this one. read more

So i cant believe no one else has complained about this...but i was staying in the hotel and its hard to sleep with live music till 10pm...rooms too close to the action they should give out free earplugs. I asked to move to a room farther from the music and was told that would be 20$ more dollars. i feel like if room is empty why not do it to accomidate a guest who didnt know in advance how loud it would be?? ...i really value sleep exspecially when i pay $200 a night for a room to do it in. (I was also 8 months pregnant) Besides that, most things were good except 2 tiny pieces of food on the floor and trash was not empty when i entered room. This is a nice little old Tavern that we found. Older style decor and furniture. Nothing fancy but a nice comfortable "local" kind of place. They had 33 craft beers on their list. We will have to go back to try a few of them. We just had sodas. The food...outstanding!!! My wife got a Turkey & bacon sandwich that was so big, it fell apart as she was eating it. Lol. And the Turkey was fresh Tom turkey. The sweet potato fries were actually wedges that were perfectly crispy. Served with a cinnamon dipping sauce. I got the Ahi Tuna Bowl. WOW!!!! This was outstanding. - Blend of roasted vegetables with red quinoa, jasmine rice, garished with radish and sliced avocado with choice of dressing. I got the balsamic dressing. The tuna slices were seared on the outside. Sushi style tuna. Radishes were thin sliced. Plenty of quinoa & Jasmine rice. We were told it was a new dish the chef came up with lately. My compliments to the chef!!! I know I want to go back just to get that again!!! Our server (forgot her name....sorry) was great. Very friendly and right on top of all we needed. A disappointing evening of poor service and overpriced drinks. Despite being seated at a table in the pub, our waitress provided only fine dining menus featuring $31 pasta and $50 steaks. When we asked to see a wine and cocktail list, our waitress was curt and unhelpful by saying, "just tell me what you want". If this restaurant wants to pretend to offer fine dining at these prices, courteous service and a wine and cocktail list is essential. Only after asking for a pub menu did our waitress grudgingly provide one. The food was simple but good, and after waiting 20 minutes for an old fashioned drink with either Buffalo Trace or Wild Turkey, we were charged $31 for an "Angels Envy" mixed drink. Beware overpriced drinks, servers and bartenders who don't appear to care and seem quick to upcharge customers for average pub food and drink. Never again! read more

Stopped in on a recommendation from a friend, and really enjoyed this place. There was live music that seemed to be an open mic night happening and a decent crowd. I called up today to reserve a table for 6 for lunch. The guy on the phone said no problem, there was plenty of room. We showed up right on time and waited at the door for someone to seat us. Unfortunately there was nobody working the front. Looked around a bit, but couldn't find any employees. So we waited. And waited. And waited. 5 minutes standing in the doorway and nobody showed up. At that point we walked in toward the bar to see if we could find someone to ask if we should just sit or wait, but we couldn't find a single employee. So bizarre. Some reviewers forget that a pandemic will cause temporary changes to a food menu. Should of stopped in before the pandemic. The Temporance House has sat here and struggled through a rough time but still keeps the vibe in Newtown. While the menu is limited it's still fresh. Along side that they keep a fairly diverse rotating tap list. I'd like to see some beers on the list but again, given the time it's dificult to buy beer too. The staff is super friendly, most of the customers are too but there's always one who needs to complain their food isn't up to par or the menu is so different. It's a pandemic, things had to change and the prices of meat amd produce went way up too. Tough, if you don't like it stay home. We just had my sons baptism reception at the Temperance House. My wife and I highly recommend the Temp house. The food was really good, drinks were great, and all 50 people in our party were satisfied. The price was very very fair as well. The owner, her name is Kathy, even let my son roll around in his walker on the dance floor. This was very nice because he is 10 months old and although he was passed around like a football, he likes to have his independence. In addition, Kathy cut the cake for all the guests, because my cutting skills, well let's say, is not very good. I never thought an owner would do this but Kathy was amazing. Also, the staff there decorated for us, and made the banquet all look amazing. We truly had a great time at the Temp House and will be definitely booking future parties here. We will be coming more frequently as well, as I really liked the variety of the menu. Plus it's such a nice historic location but with up to date amenities. My one family member stayed at the hotel. He told me the room was so clean, ( please note my uncle is a clean freak, little obsessive He was blown away how clean it was, and he said his linens were in immaculate condition. Lastly, he said the bed was extremely comfortable as well. Finally, if you want to have a party here, get a bite for lunch, have a business dinner, date night or want to watch sports. Was in town for a funeral and decided to go out of my comfort zone (I'm a Marriott member) and stay in this historic Inn. The town of Newtown is quite nice. Very old (1700's) and charming. This place was no different. Staff was wonderful. Place known to be haunted but I didn't notice anything. Had dinner here @ the bar as well. Burger was outstanding. Marie was my bartender/server. Simply stated, I cannot say enough about the fantastic experience my friends and I had at the Temp for Sunday Brunch. I started with coffee and an ice water with lemon. The coffee was fantastic, a bold brew at the perfect temperature - and while it may sound silly, the ice water with lemon came with a healthy slice of lemon - It's so rare to get "squeezeable" lemon in ice water nowadays. I ordered a Bloody Mary and it was not only pretty to look at but it also tasted great! One of my other friends got the Bloody Mary and she really enjoyed it also, and my other 2 friends got the Prosecco Belini and thoroughly enjoyed them! For my main course I ordered the Crab Benedict - this was served with asparagus and homefries. The asparagus with crisp, and tender - perfectly prepared and the potatoes were excellent - usually when you order potatoes out they are terribly underseasoned, these were quite good! Hollandaise sauce was on point! My friends ordered the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, and the Mushroom Crepes, and they were more than satisfied with their choices! Our waiter was personable, and very accomodating. We dined with 2 babies which can sometimes be a challenge but they were very accomodating and we had no issues. The Temperance House has been in operation (off and on with a variety of owners) for over a century. It consists of a restaurant, barroom, bed & breakfast. Since reopening earlier this year under new ownership, I have stopped in a few times for happy hour or later in the evening with friends and associates for after meeting meetings and socializing. While I really did not like, "The Temp," before due to its heavy political personality, the new version is much more friendly to all invitees, and offers a few small back rooms for groups to get together with quality bar and kitchen service. We were there last night for a couple of hours to catch up after last week's national elections (more commiseration, than celebration). Our server was warm and efficient, and the food and drink were good and reasonably priced. From our vantage point behind the barroom, we heard the live band playing in the bar, but not loud enough to interfere with conversation. Entering and leaving, I spied several people I knew from around town, and we acknowledged each other with nod, smile or wave. They were all having a good time. Now that the vibe is more welcoming, a check on their dinner menu is in order. Hope it, too, is more warm and tasty than the dusty dryness of past party clubbiness. read more

The Temperance house has been on our list to try for quite sometime now. We stopped this past Sunday after a trip to Shadybrook farm. We arrived around 5:00 with only 2 patrons at the bar. There was no hostess nor was there a server. We were sat by the bartender and she was also our waitress. Our menu had zero entrees on it, just bar fare. As it was our first time there we asked for recommendations. She said go for the wings, we did just that. We ordered the hot wings well done. They surely did not disappoint. They were extra crispy and delicious. They could have used more sauce but that can be easily overlooked. They were the perfect size too. At $10 I believe they were priced just right for 10 wings. I opted with the southwest burger and my wife had the apple salad. The apple salad while fresh was a disaster. It was overly dressed to the point you could probably have filled half of a pint glass with the dressing. The dressing itself wasn't that, it was very watery. The pecans were overly toasted and burnt. It gave the entire salad an unpleasant taste. My burger was okay. The burger itself was frozen and not fresh. The bun not toasted. The bacon while crispy was cold. The jalapeño poppers on the top were a nice touch and added the flavor the burger needed. The aioli was good but there wasn't enough. The fries that accompanied were typical frozen and easily forgettable. The wings by far were the highlight of the meal. The service lacked as more people arrived as there was just a bartender. Came in for dinner while in the area. Ambiance is nice with its setting in a historic inn and restaurant dating to the 18th century. We opted to sit in the tavern area since the dining room was empty and there is a smaller dining area off the bar so it was still somewhat cozy. We went with a couple of blonde ales on tap which were very good and a handful of appetizers. The carpaccio was well prepared and had the right amount of seasoning. We also liked the seafood/bacon mac and cheese which had plenty of seafood and was not overly heavy. The mussels (which are large enough for an entrée as they are served with hunks of garlic toast) were also quite delicious with the marinara we opted for from the three choices offered. My friend also ordered an Italian hot dog which was huge and had to take half to go along with the fries. Service was a bit spotty (the only negative) but the prices were reasonable for what we ordered. read more

We came here about two weeks ago on a Sunday around 6pm as we had been informed by a friend that it was on the upswing. We used to come here often about 5 or 6 years ago as it was fun, had live music and we could meet up with our friends for cocktails and a light meal. Also, it was the only place I knew of where you could smoke a cigar. We stopped coming as the service and food seemed to be on the decline. We never stayed at the Inn. Upon arrival we noted that the bar was pretty full and there were a few diners eating in the various dining areas. About 50% full. We managed to grab two seats at the bar and ordered a couple of glasses of wine. The wine list is adequate. The bartender seemed quite busy and there were a lot of discussions between the hostess and bartender about something or other, but it did not effect the service for us and she was very loquacious once we talked her up. Apparently the place is under new management. Smoking is prohibited and even though I like a nice cigar from time to time I really don't need to smoke in a restaurant. We ordered from the starter menu - gnocchi and seared scallops. The gnocchi was quite tasty and the red sauce it was served with tasted very fresh as if just made. The pasta itself was firm but smooth and very good. The scallops were also really good. My wife and I almost always share our orders and compare notes. We both enjoyed these dishes. My Mothers Day Brunch at The Temperance House was the worst I've ever experienced and I am 80 ears old!!. The food was not walking distance from the cold back room. The food was cold as well , when they put it out in steamers. Nothing for little ones like chicken strips or french fries. Asked when the chicken was coming out , told soon, 10 min. later no chicken. What brunch does not furnish rolls, or bread(Temperance doesn't). When bill came , charged for 3 little ones under 3 years of age. Prime rib fatty and no au jus . Our family comes here for happy hour on Tuesday after son's swimming class. The happy hour menu is delicious, more specifically the sweet potato fries with baileys pecan butter, and the teriyaki calamari are amazing! You also cant go wrong with the mussels, stuffed meatballs, or the cheese triangles. Tuesday's starting at 7 is also quiz night. Great family bonding time and a blast, even if we have to make up answers on occasion, lol. We've tried a few other items from their main menu (pork board, ribs, etc.) which have been good. I came here with a group of about 20 people for a post funeral luncheon. We had reserved the private dining room. The restaurant was very accommodating when we arrived an hour early. We ended up getting drinks at the bar while they set everything up. I tried the Bloody Mary which was made to perfection. I loved that it had a nice kick to it.
