I've never been to a cafe like this and honestly, don't think I will ever find it elsewhere cause it's SO unique! Came here to do some work and it was great-I was vibing to the music they had. Although, if you're picky about your lighting and want to work in bright light, this place might not be it for you as their lighting is a little dim. Wow! I came here for a Halloween event thrown by Queen Dom Fest. The space was so funky, artsy and such a vibe! It's a great place for photo opps and lots of places to sit/relax. If your in the mood for moving and grooving there was also a lot of space for dancing. The staff of Template worked "the bar" and were so friendly and easy to talk to all night. They really seemed to love being there and made the experience that much better! They are opening a new location in Bankers Hill called: The Unknown. I can't wait to check that place out and see how it compares. This place is a coffee shop by day and event space by night. I accidentally and VERY happily stumbled upon The Template. I love me a happy accident as such! I had just parked my car and was walking back to the creator's market I was vending at when, out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of a BEAUTIFULLY done and captivating mural. Out of curiosity, I turned down the street and started walking towards, what I know now to be, The Template. To my surprise, I was DELIGHTED to see that this was not just a coffee shop - but an artist's cafe! There were a few local artist and vendors who had setup booths and were selling their creations. It was so wonderful seeing a space that empowered artist to show off and share their work with the community! I was running short on time, so I ordered a honey matcha iced latte to go. The staff members were so incredibly kind and open to conversation. Before I knew it, my order was ready to go and I was well on my way back to the market I was originally en route to. I left this shop feeling joyful and superbly grateful to have connected with some wonderful folks in my short time there. The only thing I wished for was to have had more time to really take in the comforting and open vibe of the shop. Looks like I'll just have to swing by again the next time I am in town! The Template is unlike any coffee shop I've ever experienced! Art installation/gallery, performance venue, thrift store, coffee shop, arcade, you name it. I loved the vibe and I felt like this place was a good representation of OB culture. The drinks were unique and I wanted to try all of them - I ended up getting the huns n' roses which was a delicious blend of rose, milk, honey and espresso. But honestly The Template is SO much more than a coffee shop, and where it shines is its community focus. Taking a brief look at their website, I see they hold open mics, socials, dance parties, workshops (including an essential worker support group which I would 100% attend if I lived in the area), and other events. They also seem to be dog-friendly, as we did come across a dog (who I assume had an owner) wandering around the shop. Come for the coffee, stay for the vibe and community. If I lived in San Diego, this would be my go-to coffee shop. Highly recommend to those looking for some good coffee and a creative, inclusive space! read more

Such an interesting spot in Ocean Beach. Very eccentric decor. They have a small stage and the server said that they host shows in the evenings. The ventilation is not great though. Also this shop says it's open until 10pm but that's only on days when they have shows. They have a back patio. That was so serene and calming to hangout back there. read more

Groovy little store that really captures the essence of Ocean Beach. The barista was very laidback and chill and I appreciated the way he was open to talking to all the customers. I got the maple latte but would try another one next time. They have fun events every weekend at like 7? That range from concerts/open mic night/ comedy shows! The parking lot next to is trying to charge $30 which is something I will never try to do. So many things on the wall and around the room to look at and just wonder how it just works with everything else in the room haha I came here on a quick coffee run when I was in OB, and it did not end up very quick at all.. the only 1 barista that was there was talking to a customer for a really really long time, I would say a good 10 mins while I was standing in line, and I get it, you're friends, but they were just chit chatting about who knows what but I don't get why they can't catch up after everyone in line has ordered??? A quick coffee run was not very quick at all.. The coffee I received was good! They do have interesting sweet latte options and you can probably find something that you like. I've lived in Ocean Beach for 6 years and have enjoyed the Template since they started. I always longed for a "cafe" that would be about more than biscotti, pastries and coffee. I harken to the rich history of cafes in the Greenwich Village heydays where people congregated, enjoyed the treats and listened to and supported great musicians as bands or as individuals at open mics. Came here on one of their open mic nights. The decor is pretty cool and random so you will definitely find yourself looking around a lot. The vibe is very chill and relaxed. The performers were a lot of fun to listen to and you could tell they were all enjoying themselves! What I thought was weird was one of the staff members made an announcement towards the end saying that performances would have to be 1 song from there on out. Turns out he just wanted time to play something with his girlfriend for 10 mins taking up a lot of the time that was left and making the whole night run late. I am so happy that I had my husband's birthday partyat the Template!! First, I was impressed by how responsive, easy to communicate with, and patient Marie was despite the number of questions I sent her way while we ironed things out over text and email. It wasn't just the venue that sold me on wanting to have his party there - it was also how approachable, friendly, and amazing Maria was!! During the party, Roberta and Micah were just as incredible!!! I honestly don't have words to describe how wowed Bill and I were by them!!! Roberta was always patient, friendly, smiling and helpful behjnd the bar. And Micah went WAY above and beyond to make sure that everything was as colorful, fun, and ran a smoothly as possible! The vibes in here are IMMACULATE! I came across this place while walking around Ocean Beach. I was drawn to this place by the sounds of the live harp player that they had on that particular day. As soon as I walked in, I was enamored buy the ambiance: psychedelic looking art and lights, friendly staff, and live music. One thing that surprised me about this place was how spacious it was. If I had not used the bathroom, I would have completely missed the outdoor patio that they had in the back. I don't do this often, but this was the first time in a long time where I just sat in a coffee shop and enjoyed my drink- I'm usually there to do work but I couldn't help but spend almost an hour just taking in the vibes. It's also in a really amazing location close to the beach. I also really appreciate a coffeeshop with a wide variety of specialty lattes. I had the rose honey latte and although I've had similar versions at other coffee shops, this one has been my favorite so far. I will definitely be coming back to try their other drinks and relish in the spectacular vibes. read more
