This is a review for the Ocean Beach location…read more Let's start with the positives first : the salad was pretty good. Now - let's get to the negatives - of which there are many. You would think one could get the salad served in a regular bowl if eating there - nope, they only have the "to go" plastic containers, even though their website shows salads served in an ACTUAL BOWL. So, great, I get to waste plastic, between the "to go" bowl, plastic fork, plastic cup for water, and plastic small cup for dressing. Second, they don't have ice?! WTF? We would like to have our Diet Coke with a cup of ice but they just....don't have any ice. Ok..... Next, let's talk about price. $16 for a salad isn't cheap, but then another $6 just to add some cubes of chicken? Really? For $22 I could go to an actual restaurant and not eat at one of these "fast casual" places. Over and over again we the public are told to "eat and spend local", but this is exactly why these places are going under. For $22 I get attitude from the 19 year old working the register, get to drink out of a can, get tons of plastic to dispose of, and get to sit in a bland, white cinder block eating area which has a beautiful view of the CVS parking lot. Learned my lesson - next time I'll go to an actual sit-down restaurant that charges the same price and is a much better experience.

I saw an Egyptian food stall with people lined up to order and waiting for their meal. I waited in line for five minutes and decided to find something else. My hunger needed to be quelled soon as evidenced of a growling stomach. Just a couple minutes of walking along Newport and I stumbled upon Shawarma House. I wasn't sure if they were still open but Mathios- the gentleman at the register assured me they are with one condition...I have to eat at the available tables outside which was fine with me. The photo of the Falafel Plate looks like it could satisfy my burgeoning hunger so that, I picked. Situated myself on the street side table with two chairs and faced myself towards the crowds leaving the Farmer's Market. Soon after, out came Sam, the proprietor holding a huge plate of Mediterranean rice, falafel and hummus and a smaller plate of pita bread and spicy sauce. I was overwhelmed at the sight of this meal and doubted my ability to finish every bite. I was able to eat less than half and promised myself I would work on the rest tomorrow. The next day, it was still too much for me to completely devour! This would be a perfect single dish for two people! Meeting Sam and his son Mathios, tells me a lot about how passionate the family is to making customers feel welcome as well as nourished with their traditional dishes in their one year old establishment! As I see others before me have noticed .... if you look at their egg rolls (and since I make my own I was a little surprised to see them in a greek place).... but like everything else there, the flavor is just great. The kitchen sent them to us, without ordering. And that was a good idea for proving their food, no matter what you order is authentically greek, sometimes with a twist. Thanks chef and staff. The spicy salmon portion was super generous, although I do wish they gave a little more tuna. The macaroni salad was also delicious and honestly a must-get on the side. Only downside was the service. But honestly, the food was good enough that I'd still come back :') Also heads up, not a spot where you can dine in. You have to take it to to-go, and there aren't public seating/tables in the area.

Starting with the food, the rice was probably one of the biggest issues for me. The texture just wasn't very good and didn't have the fresh, soft consistency I normally expect from a good poke bowl. Since rice is such a big part of the dish, it definitely brought the overall quality down. I also tried the kimchi ahi because it sounded really good, but it honestly didn't taste as good as I expected. It wasn't terrible, but I was expecting a lot more flavor. The spicy ahi, on the other hand, tasted great and was easily the best part of my meal. I also added the mac salad on top, and I'm not even exaggerating when I say it was basically just noodles . I was expecting an actual creamy, flavorful mac salad, but maybe they got my order wrong. Unfortunately, the customer service made the experience even worse. The cashier who helped me was extremely rude and unwelcoming. I attached a photo for context because the attitude was honestly noticeable throughout the entire interaction. I felt like I was being mean mugged like crazy just for ordering, and the whole interaction made me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. I understand everyone can have a bad day, and I don't expect employees to be overly cheerful, but basic friendliness and respectful customer service should still be expected. Between the weird rice texture, disappointing kimchi ahi, mac salad that was basically just noodles , and especially the poor customer service, I left pretty disappointed. The spicy ahi was genuinely really good, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to make up for the rest of the experience.

Soi OB they are pretty good at letting you know what's vegan, they even have labeled vegan eggs rolls on their menu. The reason they only get 4 stars though, is because they don't have a dedicated vegan menu or anything listed as vegan(besides the egg rolls), you literally have to ask what is vegan on the menu. It's right next to Newport, the main area of OB, so it's convenient for us, it's a small little restaurant, but we don't mind when grabbing a quick bite, the service is fast and the staff is nice. Last night however, this time I had the yellow curry with mock duck and the potatoes and carrots were undercooked, in the words of Gordon Ramsay "It's Raw!" Came to mind when I bit in to them. Now undercooked carrots, sure I'll eat them but undercooked potatoes nope, they aren't able to be digested and unless you wanna spend your night trying to expel the raw potatoes from your body then don't eat them. I say that Soi OB can improve in quality control, please check that everything including your potatoes are cooked. You don't want people getting sick off raw potatoes.

And this review is after that experience, so we can compare and contrast things like pricing and quality. When you come here you must bring a loaded wallet. To try a sour beer or any of their Russian River beers, (which was a surprise to us that there even was beer coming out of Russian River, a place I love for wine) .... is $19 for a bottle. And if you've never tried a sour beer and no one likes it, there are no returns. You pay your money and you take your chances. They are creative at The Joint. I mean an eel roll with macadamia nuts is a brilliant twist on sushi. The second thing we try is their soft shell crab roll. Delicious. Everyone at the table 'seconds' these comments. I ask someone on the way in, seated at a table eating sushi if it is good. He says: "I'll let you know". Later, he comes back to our table to let me yes! It's really good". So is this a good place to go for Sushi? The answer is yes. Is it a little confusing as an asian fusion place to have so many diverse choices? The answer is yes, but I also admit I do like all the options. Again, they call their Happy Hour food 'Tapas'. Is that Spanish, or is it just me? Japanese fried chicken or an arugula salad or oysters? lol Your taste buds must travel all over the place and that's hard on the palate and my headspace of 'what am I eating'? Is it overpriced? The answer is yes! And if I'm being honest, it surprises me that no one else on yelp is mentioning this. If money is not an issue and you want good sushi, our group recommends trying The Joint. Just don't count on happy hour having happy prices. $4 for an oyster is not happy! It's regular priced. Maybe even over priced for a happy hour menu where oysters come in at $1 and $2 for happy hour. And today, they are all out of oysters. lol We usually just tell you what to order when you go to a restaurant. This is the first time we have felt the need to let you know what you're in for, price wise. Sorry to the wonderful staff and great chef. No idea why they need to represent themselves as 'happy hour noon - 6pm every day', leading me to believe there is good pricing. But it's not my zoo, not my monkeys. Everything is raw, thoughtfully prepared, and you can truly taste the quality of the ingredients. The chef is hands-down amazing and somehow manages to turn healthy food into works of art. I ordered the buffalo wrap, which came with kale chips on the side. It definitely has a kick to it, but it's balanced by an entire rainbow of vegetables packed into the wrap. Every bite feels nourishing, full of vibrant ingredients that feed your body with different vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. I also ventured out and tried the freeze-dried durian. The texture immediately reminded me of a Lucky Charms marshmallow, although it's much less sweet. The flavor is incredibly difficult to describe--mild and subtle at first, with a fleeting savory note that quickly transforms into something almost tropical, like guava crossed with a nutty vanilla cream. It's unique, delicate, and unlike anything I've tasted before. For dessert, I sampled the Butterfinger and Twix. The Butterfinger filling has a green hue, which might surprise you at first, but don't let that fool you. The chef has somehow recreated the classic Butterfinger flavor in a raw, healthy version. It's not quite as sweet or crunchy as the original, but the flavor and texture are remarkably close and absolutely delicious, this is definitely a must try! The Twix was my personal favorite. The layers of caramel, cookie crunch, and chocolate come together perfectly. The balance of flavors is simply incredible. I've tried several items from Peace Pies over the years, and this place has never disappointed. The menu is creative, fun, and proof that healthy, raw, gluten-free food can be absolutely delicious. Highly recommend! Once in a while the workers are busy working in the back, prepping food and creating recipes- so you may have to get their attention... If they hear you come in, you're greeted immediately with helpful guidance to the menu. I came on prior occasions with my best friend who has many allergies and is of dark melanin- I state this because of a prior ill review regarding preferential treatment based on skin color. That has not been our experience. And I hope that review doesn't deter anyone from trying out this place.
