What an unexpected diner pleasure The Templeton is. I generally don't spend much time near this section of Granville, but I happened to be in the neighborhood after a long walk on a late weekend afternoon, in need of a good veggie burger. The space is small, but counter service was immediately available, and the wait for a booth was about 15 minutes, shown to us by down-to-earth, efficient, and pleasant staff. I was anticipating greasy spoon fare, and that can definitely be acquired here, but many of the menu items seem to have a thoughtful twist. There are vegetarian and vegan options, including a delicious veggie burger topped with fresh lettuce, ripe in-season tomato, and thinly sliced red onion. Fries are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. With a Coke and tip, my meal came out to about $20, which is the way Vancouver rolls these days. The post weekend brunch can leave the place in a bit of chaos--lots of ketchup bottles being refilled, etc. I also wish that the vinyl on the booth seats could be reupholstered--it's not fun to slide across a partially ripped seat cover. If you love diner food like I do then hit the Templeton the next time you're downtown. The Granville strip is still seedy as ever so don't be surprised if someone asks you for some spare change. This is just a normal part of being in Vancouver. The diner is super retro complete with a jukebox although it almost always seems to be broken. Cozy into a booth and enjoy the artwork ranging from retro post cards from Hawaii to comic books to airstreams. My go to order is the BLT with fries. You can also make it vegan. The burgers are delicious too. On my last visit I had the Templeton open face grilled cheese another winner. They are licensed so you can have a beer or a Caesar with your meal. No, it's just a hole-in-the-wall diner with heavy retro touches to make it acceptable to self-proclaimed hipsters. It was our first breakfast in Vancouver, and we made a beeline to Granville Street where the cool people hang. It was the late morning, so were perusing both sides of the menu, and Jamie W. landed squarely on the C$10 Battered Fish and Chips, two good-size pieces of ling cod with fries and a dollop of tartar sauce (see photo). I was still hankering for breakfast, so I went for the C$8 Truckers Breakfast, which consisted of three scrambled eggs, three turkey sausage links, and a side of roasted rosemary potatoes (see photo). It was all just OK really, not a single touch made it any more memorable beyond anyone's expectations of a diner meal. In hindsight, for just a couple of dollars more, I would have gone to Twisted Fork on the next block even if it would have meant a slightly longer wait. The quality of the food is substantially better without the 1950s paraphernalia. I have concluded that the Templeton is a place for the culinarily indifferent Canadian. I had attempted to eat here about half a dozen times before I finally got in. I hate lineups and will very rarely wait longer than 10 minutes for a table, especially with so many great choices in the neighborhood. My last attempt was successful as my timing was spot-on that day. We only had to wait 2-3 minutes for the server to clear a space at the counter and we were in. Deciding what to eat was tougher than I expected, as the menu seems to have a little of everything. I finally decided on the veggie and cheese omelet with a side of turkey sausage and rosemary potatoes. I'm super picky when it comes to a lot of food (something my mother hates about me) but I have a deep appreciation for a well-cooked meal. The omelet was very well done and the flavours were surprisingly good. I finished every bite on my plate and left feeling full and satisfied. An old-school diner with a menu and decor to match, The Templeton is apparently fairly well-known, but I'd never been. That changed recently - for milkshakes! They can split a full milkshake into two halves for two people, which is great, and I really enjoyed the hazelnut one we had - we almost ordered seconds! For food I had huevos rancheros, and honestly I'd say that part was fine but not great. The potatoes were a bit dry, and the eggs and beans and the rest were good but nothing special. I might have made a mistake not going for decadent diner food, but I did want something light, and flavour was a bit lacking. Visiting Vancouver for the first time this week. Arrived early, so me and wifey decided on breakfast. Looking for something traditional, and that's exactly what we found. A little different, because we had to show proof of vaccinations just to be seated.....better to be safe than sorry, I guess!! The turkey sausage was wonderful. Tender and not overcooked, A refreshing change from the usual pork sausage out there. The hashbrowns were well seasoned and tasty! Nothing is worse than mushy hasbrowns. I highly recommend giving them a try. They offer a wide range of breakfast options. I choose a standard breakfast to use as a measure from one place to another. I will say this, the grease in the breakfast food was low which helps ease my guilt for eating my high fat sausage option.LOL!! What they really lose points on is customer service. The flavours aren't complex and pretty dialed back, but with enough hot sauce and other accoutrements, it's pretty tasty. It comes with roasted potatoes (with rosemary -- yum) and choice of toasted (they have margarine/vegan butter). Super friendly service. Not the most exciting breakfast place, but for a no frills, cheap diner, they serve a pretty satisfying breakfast. Got a booth in the back and looked over the menu. My date had scoped out what some of the other patrons were enjoying and decided to try something new. I, on the other hand, stuck with what I know. Eggs Benedict. It was actually very good, overall. The color of the eggs was a bit startling, and the sauce was more lemony then I like but it was still delicious. I had a bite of the croissant sandwich that my date enjoyed, and it was delicious also. Kids happily nom'd on banana pancakes and yogurt. Overall the food was pleasant and delightful. My favorite was the Caesar, was my first one and it was delicious. I would go back just for that alone. That doesn't make me an alcoholic, I swear. Be prepared, they up charge for real syrup and maybe because I am american, I didn't notice much difference between the two maple syrups.
