I have never encountered a community with such an extraordinary team. From the moment we arrived, the warmth and professionalism were evident. Administrator Andrii set the tone. He was incredibly thorough during our tour--no rushing, no skipping over details. He patiently answered every question and made sure we clearly understood how the community operates. His calm, knowledgeable presence immediately built trust. The CNAs and nurses were equally impressive. They were attentive, compassionate, and consistently greeted residents with genuine smiles. What really stood out was how client-centered they were. Every staff member we passed made eye contact, said "hello," and acknowledged each resident by name--as if each person truly mattered. It's rare to find a place where excellent care, kindness, and professionalism all come together so naturally. This community exceeded our expectations in every way, and we left feeling confident, grateful, and comforted knowing that residents here are treated with dignity and heartfelt care. read more

It has taken me some time to leave a review because I've been so upset over the way this facility handled a situation. Our 88-year-old mother was referred to this "beautiful" and highly recommended rehab facility in November of 2024 and spent 20 days there. It has a very low staff to patient ratio and my mother didn't get the care that she needed. She used her call button often if we weren't there with her and often needed repositioning. One of her complaints was that the call button was often placed out of her reach at nighttime. My family and I split time at the facility and were there 8-10 hours a day. We saw the doctor one time during those three weeks. It often took a number of days to get medication changed and implemented. Nurses and CNA are overworked and understaffed, therefore, toileting and dispensing medication was often late. My mother developed a horrible bed sore that we are still dealing with to this day. I'm well aware of the issues plaguing these types of facilities, but this experience was beyond disturbing. On my mother's last day there she told us about an "issue" from the night before with one of the CNAs. I immediately went to the director of nursing to inform them. The directors of nursing and administration hopped on the complaint immediately and interviewed with my mom with me present. My mother was able to articulate exactly what she told me when interviewed by the directors. I left at 3:30 PM and told the staff I would return at 5:30 PM to help her with dinner. As I was on my way back to the facility, I received a phone call that my mother was being transported to the ER on a 5150. During the course of the facility's due diligence, the Los Altos police department was called to come interview my 88-year-old bed-bound mother with no family present with her. I would have had no issue with it, save for the fact that there was no communication to the family that would happen as the outcome of the complaint, or I otherwise would not have left. My mother has always been a very timid and non-confrontational person and having two imposing men in dark uniform with guns on their belts come into her room made her anxious and frightened therefore she made some concerning statements, which is understandable. I also understand the need to 5150 someone when appropriate. The hospital never issued a 5150 and my mother's medication was changed, as needed. This change could have been done at the facility if the doctor was present half the time they said they would be and/or would have communicated with us in a timely manner. Granted, it was a blessing to get her out of there and home with us. It's unfortunate that some facilities have the reputation they do, but understaffing and lack of communication with a "non-present" doctor is the common denominator. This review is for the skilled nursing facility. My 101 year old Mother has been cared for by The Terraces At Los Altos on multiple occasions over the last few years. The fact that I have taken her back when she needed rehab for differing health reasons speaks loudly. From start, admissions to discharge the care and compassion shines through. The place is emaculatley clean. Single rooms, Bathroom and showers are in room. Food choices are plentiful and very good, the food staff is very accommodating. The professional staff, from Nurses, PT and OT are simply fantastic. The goal is to get the patient to the next step of recovery and they work with you to get you there, all the while taking the patients wishes and concerns in to account. I had to put my 87 yr old father here after he fell and broke his hip and had to have surgery. While the faciliy itself is nice, the communication and quality of care is horrific. My father had parkinson's and became disoriented and was a fall risk. I asked them to put an alarm on his bed for the short term and they did not do so which subsequently led to two unsupervised falls. In addition the communication between the dr's , nurses and administrative staff is just horrific. I would not recommend putting a loved one you care deeply about at The Terraces. read more

My wife broke her femur bone and was admitted to Terraces at Los Altos for rehab after 5 days stay at Stanford Hospital. Terrace is at a quiet residential neighborhood, all single rooms. The aisles are wide and bright. All staffs were very nice and friendly, including the receptionists, CNAs, RNs, PTs, OTs and administrative staff. We had a very pleasant experience. I put a refundable deposit of $2000 to be put on the waiting list in January 2021. On Sep. 8 I requested a refund of my deposit. After repeated telephone calls and email requests I have been unable to get a refund, as of Oct. 15. Office support is incompetent. read more

My dad had to stay in the rehab facility after a stay in the hospital in an attempt to regain strength. The facility is clean, smells good, and some staff members are excellent at their job. The biggest issue (and it's a HUGE one), the communication from their administrative staff and doctor are HORRIBLE!!! There are so many examples I could list, but I'll just say that if your family member ends up here, be prepared that admin will not keep you in the loop and you'll struggle to get important questions answered which results in a lot of added stress. Because of that, I actually wanted to only give one star but because of the cleanliness and certain staff members, I raised it to two stars. I think it's also worth mentioning (and I see in the reviews that others dealt with the same thing), my dad was told not to attempt to use the restroom by himself. The issue is that he would ring to have someone bring him to the bathroom and would often have to wait 45+ minutes (especially at night). read more

My mother is currently a resident at The Terraces. She was happy there until they decided on a 100 million expansion (I'm not kidding, you can look it up). The beautiful, old magnolia trees and gardens that made The Terraces so lovely are gone. The expansion is expected to take 18 months or more to complete. A number of residents were required to relocate to alternate quarters that were not satisfactory and the logistics of the moves were hard on them. All residents lost their dining room and now have to eat in a set of small rooms with extremely poor acoustics. Those who are are hard of hearing and use hearing aides can't enjoy their meals or talk with their friends and family members. No one thought to reduce the noxious blare of the juice coolers in the dining room, or cut down on the clatter of dishes. The residents complain that the new chairs are so heavy they can't move them, and no one seems to be listening. Many residents have to take a bus to their dining hall, when they once were able to stroll leisurely through the gardens. When they get to the hall, often there are not enough seats for them to sit with their friends. The art in the hall is awful, when there are excellent painters among the residents that would gladly contribute their creations. No one asked them. The two grand pianos that once blessed the community areas with music have been silenced and in their stead is a small electric console. The phone system had to be changed and has not functioned correctly for weeks. There is no cellular service in the dining hall, nor is the WIFI working. The announcement system, which used to be a pleasant central feature of residential life is an electronic nightmare. Huge hideous blue plastic garbage bins have been placed where gardens once grew. The ABHOW management claims to always keep the needs of the residents at the top of their priority list. I don't see hat happening. I see the residents at the bottom. If management was truly eager to show their residents how important they are it would be easy to circulate among them, find out their concerns, and at least show some kind of effort to mitigate the hardships that their expansion is creating. When an organization ceases to care about its residents in the interests of profits, the change is usually permanent. Beware of the Terraces and ABHOW. Find a smaller, more responsive organization for your assisted living. read more

I doubt anyone actually reads these reviews, but I'll add one more. This is a very nice place but you'd better be ready to pay for it. The care is quite good, but you need to understand they are short staffed so if you move an aging parent into this place you'll need to provide extra care daily at $35/hr, which effectively doubles the cost. So if you have cool $1 million to spend this is not a bad place, but if you are merely wealthy it will drain your finances PDQ. read more

For the skilled nursing section: Generally staff were respectful and upbeat. Therapists were kind, patient and resourceful. My mother was admitted due to a fracture, so she was a fall risk. Nursing staff insisted on diapering my continent and dignified mother only because she could not wait the 45 minutes it would typically take staff to respond to her call light to help her to the bathroom to void. And they would not provide a bedside commode because they were concerned about the liability even though she could walk to the bathroom. In other words, their inadequate staffing level led to a fully cogent and dignified elderly woman suffering the indignity of being diapered. Additionally meals were typically not warm by the time they made it to her room. read more

Nice surroundings and excellent care. This place is as good as it gets. I have been in many of the snf facilities in this area. The nursing staff and rehab staff work well with the patients and physicians. Staff communicates well with family members. The rooms are clean and the place is relatively quiet. The food is above average. The friendly staff works hard in a family atmosphere that is conducive to healing. It is not quite as fancy as the Forum , but overall far better in every area. read more

My father stayed in the short term rehab center and the care was excellent! He received physical, occupational and speech therapy. All of the staff were very caring, helpful and professional. I highly recommend this place! read more

A few months ago my mother was in an accident that resulted in a broken hip. After the hip replacement, I was rushed to put her into a rehabilitation center and handed a several page list of facilities and told that The Terraces at Los Altos was a very good one and, indeed, they had a 5 out of 5 star "superior" rating. They were the only one I had time to visit and it looked like a nice place so that's where we put her. It turns out that they have a lot more "memory care" patients than they do rehabilitation patients and they put the overflow into the rehabilitation area, so my mother was very uncomforatble with the people in her wing of the facility. The staff are very nice but my mother did not like or get along with the physical therapist (I don't necessarily blame the therapist for that - no idea what happened there). Terry, who is "in charge" at The Terraces, seems nice enough when you first talk to her, but it turns our she is very passive-aggressive, evasive and controlling. Very soon after my mother was placed at The Terraces, we started hearing, "Your mother is not participating in her recovery and is going to have her Medicare withdrawn." We were given zero advice as to what to do about this or help regarding the problem. In fact it is extremely common after a fall for hip replacement patients to be terrified of standing and falling again because it is extremely painful. The fact the people at The Terraces seemed to have no interest in or experience in dealing with this issue is telling. It's a very expensive place so one would think they would be able to provide such experience and skills. When I first read up on The Terraces, before my mother went in, their health inspection rating was 4 out of 5. Since my mother was admitted, I picked up two serious illnesses after visiting her. The Medicare was, indeed cut off, and the place she is currently living is treating her for gout and some kind of infection. My husband picked up infectious pneumonia after visiting my mother at The Terraces (I had shots for pneumonia and shingles not too long after we moved to CA so I was spared that particular malady). A couple of days ago, when I was doing research on nursing homes, I noticed that The Terraces health inspection rating has dropped from 4 to 2 out of 5, which is not a surprise. To top it off, the foam "A-form" that my mother's insurance paid for at the hospital, to keep her legs in place while she slept so that her hip could continue to heal, was kept by The Terraces, as they INSISTED that it was theirs, which is about as cheesy as it gets. Really, anyone in the Bay area who is looking into nursing and recovery for a family member, I implore you not to send them to The Terraces at Los Altos. Not only due to the health problems, but they were astonishingly distant with Momma's problems, not only not forthcoming on what was going on with her but they seemed only interested in collecting the Medicare fees. The place where she is now is not only half as expensive, but the staff and administrators are much more involved with her and communicative with us, plus it is cleaner and safer. read more

Don't let the updated amenities fool you. The CNA nurses here come from an agency and therefore you never have the same person caring for your family member. Because all the CNA nurses here are from an agency no one is held accountable and truly cares about the patient in the rehab facility ... classic example of outsourcing gone wrong. The Terraces have given my father tremendous support and care. They were considerate, respectful, caring, patient and attentive to all of his needs. They monitored his health with utmost attention. Our mother has been an independent resident at The Terraces at Los Alto since 2008 and has been very happy there, even in the midst of the ongoing expansion project (2015-2016), which she and many other long-time residents watch with great interest. When we first toured the campus with Mom in late 2007, the marketing director informed us of the upcoming expansion project, described the upheaval this would create, and pointed out which of the older buildings (still occupied at the time) would be torn down, so that this would not be a surprise to us. Since the campus dates back to 1949, the goal was to build more apartments that were ADA-compliant from the start, not merely update old construction. Mom chose to move into an older building that eventually was torn down, but she did so knowingly and was very happy there, as she is now in her beautiful new apartment. In response to one negative review, it might be encouraging to know that during this transition - at the request of the residents - the two grand pianos were placed elsewhere on campus, not in storage. The WWII generation is a resilient bunch, and most residents seem to consider the construction a temporary inconvenience. Although some plantings were lost in the tear-down, two new buildings now open onto a welcoming park-like area. Smooth concrete paths and small patios edged with flowers and green lawn are shaded by old oak trees. There is also a separate protected garden area for residents in The Grove (memory care), so that residents with memory issues can't wander away. As each area of construction is finished, new landscaping is put in place, much of which appears to be drought-tolerant. Until the main dining room is built, the Independent Living residents on the far side of the campus are transported in passenger vans to the dining room in the new Assisted Living building, so they won't have to walk around the construction in the dark. I often have dinner with Mom in the dining room, and the residents arriving by van appear to be in good cheer when they come in. The technological issues have been resolved. Wi-fi and cell phone service are in place along with land-lines & cable TV service, and the dining room sound system was working great when I was there tonight. We would certainly recommend The Terraces at Los Altos. Mom really enjoys the sense of community, dining with her friends each evening, and watching the Saturday night movies (with popcorn). Since she no longer drives, she is thankful for the Sunday morning church services on-campus. We, along with Mom, have forged strong friendships with many of the residents and staff, who are very warm and caring. We've found them to be very responsive whenever Mom has a problem, or if we have questions to ask on her behalf. Sometimes we're told, "I don't know the answer, but I'll find out who does." Someone always gets back to us with an answer. In fact, if there are any issues of any kind, all residents and family members are urged to let someone on the staff know. In each case, there has been good follow-up, and everything has been resolved to our satisfaction. I would definitely recommend The Terraces at Los Altos to our family and friends. read more

The Terraces is the best facility I have ever seen. My 88-year old mother spent time there recently and her care was outstanding. The staff was always patient, above & beyond helpful, kind, and genuinely caring. Stephanie Stewart, one of the directors, is amazingly helpful, knowledgeable, available and kind. Overall, they have a great team and that made all the difference in my mother's treatment and eventual recovery. Additionally, the food was outstanding - and my mom was certainly particular about that. I give the highest recommendation to The Terraces for being a truly outstanding care facility. read more

My 92 year old father-in-law recently spent a few weeks at The Terraces. We were delighted with the care that he received. His room and the adjacent dining/sitting area were very clean and nicely furnished. The meals, which he enjoyed, were varied and well-prepared. The nursing, physical therapy and occupational therapy staff were very good and very kind. An extra bonus was the frequent other in-house activities, which included things like movies, singing, discussing current events and physical activity. During his stay his physical capabilities were greatly improved. And though he has always wanted to "stay at home", he was sad to go! We are very grateful to the the entire team at The Terraces and recommend it highly. read more

Clean, bright, roomy modern facility with good air quality in most areas and a sense of safety. Sun room and several others stuffy though. Some upholstered furniture in common areas should be cleaned and/or discarded. Outdoor area away from street crowded with tables and chairs near doorways so difficult to maneuver through with wheel chair especially when being used. Some doors don't stay open to allow easy transport through them. Bravo to the cooks for menu selections and freshness. Food cost to visitors to join resident at mealtime is high especially in light of visitors assisting with feeding. Therapy staff knowledgeable and competent but lots of switching of therapists so continuity lacks. Nurses and aids also competent, respectful and helpful but often short staffed so call lights ring for long periods. Front door staff welcoming and helpful. Admission orientation lacks important information on facility systems of care (maybe a checklist would help) and no regular updates on resident/patient progress unless proactive in requesting. The staff at the Terraces have consistently demonstrated an eagerness and enthusiasm for care of the residents. They are constantly going the extra mile to make sure my mother is not only comfortable and safe, but also entertained and feels included in the community. The variety of experiences The Terraces creates for the residences is astounding. They visit all sorts of places I would love to go. Most of all, the Terraces is safe place for my mom; safe because people are genuinely caring, thoughtful, and watchful to ensure that she gets the most from each day. They monitor her health and add to her happiness. To top it all off, she loves the meals! She is so busy with activities that engage her interest that we have to make sure she is not busy before we stop in to see her. I am hopeful that there is space for me when I am 92. read more

My mother lives at The Terraces and she has been very well taken care of. I can't speak highly enough of the staff there. When we go visit her friends in other units she is frequently greeted with hugs from the staff that took care of her on her previous floor. I'm very grateful that she chose to live at The Terraces. I moved into the new TLA assisted living facility in min February 2015. I am very pleased with my nice apartment and found the staff to be very professional and helpful and management receptive to suggestions made by residents for improvement. I like the fact that it is a small facility making it easy to access the dining room and the various activities offered. Being in a residential neighborhood in the lovely town of Los Altos alleviates any institutional feeling a facility such as this might have. I have friends living at several other retirement communities in the area, all very nice but, in my opinion, way too large and not very user friendly. read more

I flew to Switzerland in September to see family, and, wonderful as it was, I am glad to be home at The Terraces at Los Altos. I am amazed at the progress of the buildings rising from the underground parking lot, ready for new residents by next fall. I appreciate anew the "welcome home" greetings of friends, the exercise class each morning, the waiting Jigsaw puzzle on the table in my hallway. There are the Current Events on Thursday evenings, a movie every Saturday night, and, last week a planned trip to a restaurant for lunch. I love to read, and last week I went to two book club gatherings. I had a swim on a sunny morning in the heated pool just under my apartment balcony at the weekly water fitness class. This morning I reported a problem, wind coming in under my balcony door. This afternoon a member of the staff came to repair my door. It is good to be home at The Terraces at Los Altos.
