I found Ragtime Southwest after I moved to Texas, and wanted to have the organ restored so I could surprise my dad when he came to visit. John Talbot picked up the organ and promised to make it beautiful and playable once again. He even remarked about it having nearly all of its parts, including a slat of matching wood used to hold down the music. He said most don't even have the music stand, much less that. Shortly after he picked up the organ, I located a Mason & Hamlin bench on eBay, and he came to pick it up to match it to the organ. What a lovely gesture. Right? Nearly a YEAR went by with my periodically asking about my organ and getting all manner of excuses as to why it wasn't done yet--it needed a lot of work, the materials were rare, the restorer was old and frail, and so on. When I finally got him to deliver it, it was late at night when I couldn't easily inspect it. When morning came, and and the room filled with sunlight, the finish on it was TERRIBLE! It was milky and puddled in all of the corners and crevices. The lid didn't line up with the locking mechanism, the one knee swell lock I had (I never had the other) was now missing. Several keys didn't work in certain voices, and that remarkably saved slat of wood hadn't come back with it. John Talbot apologized and said it was the work of an apprentice to his expert, while before he told me it hadn't been worked on because his expert couldn't. What he failed to consider in this grand lie was that it might have worked regarding the function of the organ, but the remedial nature of simple wood finishing. No. That's obvious. That's for idiots. He said he would come get it, they could fix it all, and it would be perfect. Another entire YEAR went by with constant inquiry, causing me endless concern that I would never see this sentimentally priceless organ again. Then, my father passed away unexpectedly--the reason I was doing this in the first place--so I called John and told him to just bring it back. Bring the damned thing back, everything was now pointless due to his relentlessly poor performance. Reassemble it regardless of its condition and me having prepaid TWO YEARS AGO and bring it back. He said he was sorry, they had JUST finished it, and he and was going to call me. Yeah, sure, a lot of comfort that is. When I got it back, the finish was much improved, and they even found the slat. But several keys still don't play, the swell lock is still missing, and the lid still doesn't line up so I can lock it. It was sloppy work from start to finish, with empty promises, and I wish I had never entrusted it to them. Definitely NOT worth the price I paid monetarily. The price for not being able to show my father after they had it for over TWO freakin' years is a price that cannot even be described. And yet, this man actually kept emailing me to provide reviews on various sites! Seriously? I have resisted until now, opting to follow the wisdom of "if you don't have anything nice to say..." As I moved back near my dad's hometown, and the origin of the organ, the memories surface again. If your player piano or organ means ANYTHING more to you than its basic appearance, find someone else to work on it. Do NOT let this man or his company touch it. EVER. Not for any reason.

I initially had my instrument sent to another shop for evaluation, but after speaking with Jason…read moreand being told he was interested in taking on the work, I had it shipped back so he could handle the repair. That meant paying additional return shipping out of pocket just to get it to him. Before drop-off, Jason reviewed photos and quoted the job at around $995 with an estimated turnaround time of about 3 weeks. After that, the experience went downhill. From December through April, I had to repeatedly follow up just to get updates. Communication was almost entirely initiated by me. Early on, I was told things were "looking promising" and that he'd be getting to it soon. Weeks turned into months with little to no progress. At one point, he said he should have more time over Spring Break and expected to finish it within a couple of weeks. That did not happen. After months of waiting, I was finally told there had essentially been no progress and that he would not be able to complete the job due to other commitments. So to summarize: * The job was accepted with a ~3 week estimate * The instrument sat there for several months * Communication was inconsistent and mostly one-sided * The work was never completed * I incurred additional shipping costs based on his willingness to take the job That's not how a business should operate. If you take on a job, you should either complete it in a reasonable timeframe or communicate early and clearly if you can't. Letting something sit for months and then backing out is not acceptable. This cost me time and money that I didn't need to lose. I could have left it with the original shop and had the work completed, but instead I trusted this process and ended up back at square one. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this shop to anyone who values reliability, communication, or follow-through.

Most places didn't respond to my request for an estimate and the couple that did wanted me to sign a contract to have the piano tuned every year or pay them a $75 traveling fee to drive from south Austin to Cedar Park. Then I turned to "Thumbtack" to find a piano tuner. Derek was the first to respond. He owns and operates TX PIANOS, and he responded personally. Gave me a reasonable quote on line to tune the piano (which had not been tuned for 5 or 6 years) and replace a broken string. When I asked about travel pay, he said that if he had 2 or more appointments in the same town he did not charge travel pay. It just so happened he had another tuning appointment scheduled a couple of days later in Cedar Park, so he waived the travel pay. He sent me a text to remind me of the appointment. He sent another text with a location tracker to show me where he was when he was on the way to my house. Derek is very personable and easy to work with. Even my big ole' furry Australian Shepherd, who barks at everyone who tries to enter our house, took up with Derek and walked right up to him, allowed a couple of pets, and never barked at him once during the visit. Derek described what he would need to do and completed the job of tuning and replacing the two broken strings in just a little over an hour. The piano sounded great when he finished and it was more "out of tune" than I thought. Due to the age of the piano and the mallets, we talked about performing a voicing to bring back the rich soft timbre the piano had when it was new, 40 years ago. Again, I received a very reasonable price for the service whenever I decide to have it done. He also put me on a "check-in" schedule for every 6 months to see if I have any other needs throughout the year. It was a pleasure talking with Derek about the piano and we even joked around about our playing techniques - or lack thereof! But most of all, he was reliable and honest and an expert at getting my old grand back in tune. I will not be looking for a piano technician again now that I have met Derek. If you need piano repair or just a tuning, you will not be disappointed with TX PIANO.

Since ours was brand new and only had one service before, he gave some good recommendations for when it needed tuning again and on how to care for the piano. Honest and no pressure. I do believe at the store I was told the paper was securely kept at a different location and wasn't digital storage. I believe the person who contacted me about the digital storage is correct but that definitely wasn't fully explained. Also why can't I do it online if that is the case? I gave two additional stars on their review because of the quick outreach but still don't like giving my Social Security Number on top of all the other info. And have no idea why a third relative is necessary. Also if this was better explained at the point of sale it would have eased a lot of my frustration. ORIGINAL REVIEW This place is awful. We were sent there by my child's elementary school. It was the only choice we were given which makes it so much worse. They have very poor business practices. They require a social security number which they keep written down which is very poor security practice. Also they require spouses name address phone and an additional relative's name, address and phone. I understand checking my drivers license and keeping information including credit card on file but all of this is unreasonable. Further it definitely should not be kept on a single piece of paper. Further we are renting because my daughter has never played violin and she may hate it. But they require a 32 month contract! This is for fifth grade, yet the contract goes through the end of seventh grade. That is also not reasonable. The staff were also rude. When I complained and questioned these things I was told I could purchase the instrument out right if I didn't like it. Again this was the only option given to us by the school. The owner appeared on the parents meeting zoom call. If he is going to work directly with the school he should have better business practices.
