The food was fresh, batter was perfectly seasoned and crisp and the fish was soft and tender. It was good and possibly better than any fish and chips I had in the UK. The chips were also nice and crisp on the outside and fluffy inside. Service was very nice. The food definitely leaves you wanting more. I wish I had ordered more so I could be eating it now. The Thistle Fish & Chips is a small restaurant in Lyndhurst, NJ. There is NO OFF street parking. Curbside only. I had to wait 25 minutes for a space to open up. As you enter there is a small waiting area and an ordering counter. Staff were very nice, cheerful, & accommodating while I waited for my order to be cooked and packaged. I didn't look into the dining room since this was a take out order. PROS: Cleanliness appears to be high on their agenda. My order consisted of Fried Oyster dinner, Fish & Chips dinner, and a Fried Shrimp & Scallops dinner. All came with French Fries and Cole Slaw. They also provided plenty of tartar and cocktail sauce. Additionally they have Malt Vinegar which is a must, at least for me when eating fish and chips. The oysters were cooked to perfection, as were the shrimp and scallops. CONS: The fish fillet was undercooked and the coating saturated with oil. I don't think the fryer was hot enough. French Fries were soggy because the steam from the closed containers. Easily solved by putting in a frying pan to crisp them up. Coleslaw was okay. As for Pricing, they are quite high for portion served. $30.00 for 2 shrimp, 2 scallops and a mound of french fries is outrageous. I can get a full seafood platter at any decent diner or restaurant for this kind of money. I think I'll look elsewhere when I get my next craving for this type of cuisine. read more

This place gets jam packed, and for good reason. The kitchen staff seem to have a good system because food gets served hot, fresh, and crispy in no time, even when they are busy. Another summer equals another chance for soft shell crabs. Most people know them for their fish and chips (and rightly so), but for about three or four summer months every year The Thistle is also the place to go for soft shell crabs. They're always fresh and almost always jumbos. Lightly sauteed in just a little flour and seasoning, and finished with a buttery sauce, the soft shells here are just about perfect. The cole slaw is also great and the fries with Old Bay are incredible. Just remember to order them well done. As always, we finished the meal with the Apple Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce, which may be my favorite dessert in the whole state. It's rich and decadent, but don't think about sharing it. You'll want your own. The staff is as friendly and welcoming as ever, and the interior remains unchanged; cozy and comfortable. Didn't disappoint. Just moved from West coast and had been searching for good fish n chips in the area. Delicious! The fish is a generous portion. I was only able to eat half the fish and fries. Perhaps because i started with some New England clam chowder that was also delish! The prices are what I would expect for good fish. The plate is just under $20. Seems like a small thing doesn't it--having the tails removed? It's not though! The small detail of removing the tail now allows you to eat the entire shrimp without trying to bite around the little tail and discarding it. It DOES make a difference. Let's move on to the coleslaw now... Even that was delicious and chopped finely. Do they sell this by the pint? If they don't, please consider doing so as it is THAT good! I had the pleasure of speaking to Susan, one of the owners, and she mentioned that the coleslaw was homemade. You can COMPLETELY taste the difference down to the mustard seeds! Haven't been here in quite some time. Took advantage of their delivery service during the Coronavirus crisis and had 2 orders of Fish & Chips and 2 orders of New England Clam Chowder delivered. Both were delicious. The batter on the fish, while probably not as crispy as if you ate it there, was wonderful and the fish was tender and delicious. The chips were also great, cut like steak fries. The chowder, while not as creamy as I usually like, was still excellent, loaded with lots of clams. A massive fried fish, and it was good, just definitely too oily for my preference. I honestly feel if the fish was smaller it would have fried better.
