We recently tried The Toasted Yolk Cafe for the first time on a weekday. The place wasn't busy, but the service was slow. Maybe they were short-staffed that day. Once we received our order, everything was tasty. I ordered The Yolk Lover's Breakfast with the French Toast. The bacon was good and crispy. We also had the Breakfast Burrito. My husband enjoyed it, but said the hash brown casserole was "just ok". The place is bright and open, with plenty of natural light. We didn't get to try any of the bar options, but we will go back and try one of the "Brunchin' Coffees" or other bar options soon. read more

Yummy! One of the best breakfasts with very large servings. This visit I had a cali-fresh omelette, bacon, biscuit and gravy. The servings are very large so I also had a to go box. We ordered the churro donuts for the table. Oh.my.goodness. So very delicious! I was with a large group and the service was excellent. The manager even came out to greet and check on us to make sure all was good. The only thing I will say is the coffee selection is minimal and not very good. Don't go here. Stay away! I walked in and was greeted by a hostess who seated me at a booth. Since I am new to the area I decided to ask her questions about the newly development of businesses in this area primarily food spots. I politely asked her to sit down to just have a couple of words. She sat and I asked a couple of questions. About the area. Then, within 10 seconds of the conversation the "manager" walks up and points to the front door and says to her I need you back at your station. She excused herself and he walked away. Didn't say anything to me and left me just hanging. I got his attention and he became very unreasonable. He told me that I was demanding. I grabbed my laptop and walked out. There is more going on behind the scenes at this location. If you eat here you are consuming negative energy and probably low quality food. Stay away, protect your spirit and eat to live. read more

This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of going to The Toasted Yolk Cafe. This place really impressed me from the time I walked in the door to the time I left. Walking in, the place was booming and busy, but we were seated within minutes. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. I loved the painted walls they had a mural-like feel to them. The staff was great. I sat and observed everyone for a while, including the owner and two managers, and man, what a great team. This is a fantastic Black-owned business that deserves to be packed every day I mean, a line out the door! Now, let's get into the food. Since this is a brunch place, I naturally had to order from both menus! The first dish I ordered was the bacon cheeseburger. Let me start off by saying you get what you pay for here. The prices are reasonable and affordable, and the portion sizes are huge! Now, back to the burger this thing was massive and juicy, even with it being cooked well-done (my fault, I didn't specify medium-well). It was still good nonetheless. Not much more to say about it, but that's not a bad thing. The burger gets the job done. Solid 8/10. The cheese grits, y'all, were so good a perfect blend of cheese and creaminess. Each bite had that slight black pepper kick. I cleared that bowl in seconds. My only complaint was that it needed just a pinch more salt, which I added myself. Whoever the "big mama" in the back is with the flabby arm stirring the pot I appreciate you so much! 9.5/10. The breakfast burrito was freaking massive, man. When it hit the table, I was in utter disbelief. It was stuffed with everything the eggs were cooked perfectly, it was filled with cheese on the inside, and smothered with queso and salsa on top. What more could you ask for? All the flavors were there, but the downside was that it needed more seasoning. The eggs especially needed a bit of salt and pepper. That's the only reason I'd give it an 8/10 as well. As you can see, none of the food was bad at all. The only thing that held it back was the slight and I mean slight under-seasoning. I really like this new spot! Decided to try it out for lunch and it was great option. It was Friday and busy but sure the $5.50 mimosa contributed to this. The environment is very inviting and very nicely decorated. I love the wall art and should have taken more pictures. The service we received was good and very quick. I went with the club sandwich which is one of my favorite meals and it was delightful. I was able to try the Southern Fried Chicken Arnold (Egg Benedict) as well and it was also very tasty. I recently visited The Toasted Yolk Cafe and had a pretty mixed experience. They don't take reservations, so we added ourselves to the waitlist about 45 minutes before arriving. Even with that, we still had to wait about 30 minutes after checking in to be seated. It was very packed and loud, which made the wait feel even longer. Once seated, service was very slow. We waited around 15 minutes before our waitress brought waters or introduced herself. We started with sangrias and the churro-style donuts. The donuts were comped for signing up for promotional emails and were really good, especially with the caramel sauce!! For entrees, I ordered the Yolk Lovers Breakfast with hashbrown casserole and a pancake, and my friend got the Double Decker Omelette. Once the food finally arrived, it was actually very delicious -- everything was flavorful and cooked well. That said, we arrived at 1:30 and didn't leave until around 3:30, and the long wait times throughout the experience just aren't worth it to me. My biscuit did not appear to fresh. SOUTHERN FRIED ARNOLD: My youngest daughter thought it tasted good but wished the chicken would have been crispier. She enjoyed her side of cheese grits. She enjoyed her iced caramel macchiato. BRISKET SCRAMBLE: My wife ordered this. She was disappointed in the presentation. She said it looked sloppy. She enjoyed the dish. She did not like her side cheese grits. Too much peppercorn for her. Also, she did not receive her biscuit that should have come with the meal. I saw a clip from a tv show and the ladies kept praising the food at the restaurant and it turned out to be The Toasted Yolk. I'd never been but had planned to go and decided to check it out for brunch. The restaurant is branded very nicely and was very clean. Tables were turned almost immediately. The food was good. I did enjoy the portion sizes they're very generous so you definitely get your monies worth. The signature dish(shrimp & grits) is what I ordered and I must say they delivered on the signature dish. The service wasn't the best. I assume they were short staffed being the bartenders doubled as waiters. After waiting over 10 minutes someone eventually came to the table to take the order. After another 30-35 minutes the food came out. It was just sat down and before I could ask for syrup the waitress was gone . So I had to flag another down who was polite and brought warm syrup. Water was never refilled nor was the table checked on. I would recommend this restaurant but probably just pick up and to go orders. I did take account that it was a holiday weekend but it wasn't at peak when I arrived. read more

My wife and I went there recently and had a horrible experience. They were jam packed and had to wait about 30 mins which is fine. Then when it was our time to be seated the host obviously seated us too early and the server was noticeably irritated. This carried on to the lukewarm service we got from her. This newly opened restaurant in the downtown Birmingham area has been receiving positive reviews so I was looking forward to experiencing it for myself on a Sunday morning. Toasted Yolk is a restaurant chain serving breakfast, brunch, and lunch in what I would describe as a slightly upgraded diner-style setting. It's a vibrantly decorated space with good natural light. As diners usually depend on their fast and friendly service, today's experience unfortunately did not measure up. As we entered, we were prompted greeted with a "how many"? Our party of two was seated at a table for four and our server arrived shortly thereafter. The menus are large and rectangular shaped with an almost overwhelming amount of choices. We decided to keep it simple and ordered basic pancakes, turkey sausage, hash brown casserole and scrambled eggs. Our food arrived about 10 minutes later, but our actual server did not reappear until we almost done with the meal. The food was fresh and well prepared except for the pancakes; one plate had a nicely prepared fluffy golden pancake, while the other looked and tasted overcooked. When we mentioned this to our server, she just walked away. We were done eating and about 10 minutes passed as we were waiting for her to return to hopefully bring the bill, but then noticed her leaving the restaurant and walking away down the sidewalk in front. Still no one came to explain the situation. We then asked another server if a manager was on duty. The young manager finally arrived about 5 minutes later and he explained that our server had decided to leave for the day and that we had been assigned another server who had not come to the table. He asked if everything was okay with our meal, and noted the burned pancake, offered us togo waters, and recommended we reserve any tip for the new server who had never come to our table. Anyway, he did offer a small discount for the charred pancake. Unfortunately, this experience was marred by poor customer service and uneven food preparation. This one gets just an "okay". read more

NEVER AGAIN! I live in the same building as the Toasted Yolk and have dined there many times since its opening. Today was the last. I have witnessed nothing more than a slow slide from the merely tone deaf & mediocre to borderline hostile service. I've never had any issue with the food. I entered at 2:25. They are open until 3:00, but how long do eggs take? Right? I was dumbfounded when the "hostess" eventually tore herself from rolling silver with her back to the door from the opposite side of the dining room and greeted me by coldly asking "I guess it's never too late for brunch eh?". WTF? 15 minutes later my coffee arrived and I placed my order. The waiter appeared to have never actually read the menu, and I thought I was going to have to explain to him that the words "substitute"and "a side of" did not mean the same thing. After finding the remains of the last diners meal stuck to the table and moving my coffee, water, creamer etc. to another table without the waiter offering any assistance, I began to understand that passive aggressive communication wasn't just the hostess's domain. He simply informed me that "You can move to another table" while walking away. After my two eggs over easy, cheese grits, bacon and a side of french toast arrived sans the sour dough toast I had substituted for the included biscuit had arrived. I ate them without the sourdough toast because the waiter actually argued with me about what I had ordered! His first clue that the french toast was à la carte and not a substitution should have been when it was preceded by my saying "substitute sour dough toast for the biscuit". His second clue would have been when I said "...and a side order of french toast." By 3:15 (for only twenty seven bucks plus a measly and completely undeserved 10% tip) I was no longer imposing on the staff of The Toasted Yolk with my presence.
