I don't understand the 4 and 5 star reviews of the food here. I ordered for lunch simple dishes where they had an hour or more to prepare. a simple grilled eggplant salad, the caprese and cafe parm dinner (with grilled eggplant). It tasted like they just threw it together without a care in the world. Food should be prepared with care and love. This missed the mark on all dishes. The eggplant on the cafe parm was cut way too thickly and not cooked. It had some grill marks on it for show. There was not taste at all. Eggplant should have herbs, garlic and olive oil prior to grilling so it tastes good. We will have to fix it and cook it later. The penne was good. the eggplant on the salad was much the same, a bit more cooked, absolutely NO taste what so ever. The caprese at lease had fresh mozzarella, the tomatoes cut took thickly, the capers a nice touch. I will not return there. Don't bother. read more

Promising menu not fulfilled in reality. Had brunch there. My wife ordered a smoothie and had to send it back because the fruit wasn't blended well enough to sip. Fresh replacement was appreciated but still didn't deliver: watered down milk without much fruit taste. How does one screw up a smoothie? Twice? My "Cafe Brunch Sandwich " their take on a Croque-Monsieur with a Béchamel sauce was nothing but two bland white bread slices a bit of cheese one slice of Canadian bacon and a lumpy milk gravy. Even the tap water had an industrial aftertaste- and this is NY where anyone's tap water tastes great. Never again!! Ugh. Total waste of $25. This place was not bad at all. Had a nice meal and got pretty decent service. My wife and I weren't having a great day when we found the tomato cafe. But the food and atmosphere significantly increased our spirits. I would recommend the tomato cafe for a bite with friends. PS table size was ample so come with a group. read more

We ordered the salmon (cooked perfectly) with rice and spinach, the chicken mushroom wedge (delicious and fresh) with awesome fries, and a personal white pizza (their ricotta mixture is incredible). Portions were really good and everything was fresh and appetizing! I visited the Poughkeepsie location of the Tomato Cafe and I was sorely disappointed. I ordered the linguini pomodoro and not only was it bland, it was nothing like the description. It was described as our tomato sauce with fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic and olive oil. There were no fresh tomatoes or any basil or garlic. The waiter said all of that was in the sauce. When I asked her to pass along the message to the chef, she said the sauce was exactly as described. I have enjoyed the Fishkill location several times, but I doubt we will return to this restaurant. read more

We went to the new Tomato Cafe near Vassar College, which opened last Monday. The food was spectacular, the beer, wicked refreshing, the service was quick and helpful. We are SO happy we stopped by. We had appetizers, the rice balls were so tasty, the sauce delectable! Will order these again! The eggplant cakes were another super taste of yummy! Came here with a friend for a late lunch and ate some pizza. Overall, the food was excellent - came out exactly how we ordered it and it was fairly reasonably priced. However, while our server was friendly and even a little funny, his service wasn't impressive. Our drinks went unfilled for over 20 minutes and we had to ask each time. The restaurant itself is quaint and has the feel of a hometown restaurant in a good way; however, it was very hot in my opinion. I've eaten here numerous times with my wife on her lunch break. Yesterday, we decided to take my parents and sister out to dinner here; what a disappointment. We ordered 2 butternut squash soups (although tasty, both came out room temperature). We split a pizza (it was undercooked). My wife and I split the special (flank steak, grilled chicken, grilled shrimp, potatoes and broccoli), it was flat out cold. I told our waiter, he responded by saying, "uhhhhh" and shrugged his shoulders. Normally I would send it back, however, my wife told me to zip it and not to cause a scene, I listened. My parents and sister's pasta dinners were good (no complaints there) Would we go back there?? Probably, but only on my wife's lunch break for pizza. I will never recommend this place to anyone except for lunch. It sucks that there are so many places to eat in the Hudson Valley, and with all the competition (especially for pizza joints) some places still don't know how to keep their customers coming back. Good lighting, temperature, etc. Servers are casual and friendly--exactly the tone for this type of restaurant. Our guy was wearing a Bob the Tomato t-shirt. Love it. The menu has a wide variety of options, and between the menu structure and the server's attitude, it felt like we could customize pretty much anything to our liking. My meatball and garlic calzone was cooked perfectly, full and cheesy, with fresh ingredients. My wife's white pizza with spinach and garlic is on our lifetime top three list of pizza. So here we are in Fishkill, NY again and thought we would try a new place. This place had good rating from our fellow "Yelpers" so we gave it a shot! We went for breakfast which was great. There was quite a few things on the menu I would have LOVED to try, but I'm on a diet, so I tried to behave myself. They also had a bakery counter with homemade cupcakes (along with other things)... they looked wonderful. Bacon was crisp!! You don't get that very often anywhere any more! We would love to go back next time we are in town .....maybe this summer. read more

On our way to the Dia Museum today this is where we ate our incredible breakfast. Maybe it was because it was our first time, maybe because it was a gorgeous day, maybe it was because we waited to sit in the booth in the window---I really don't care why AND everything we ate was GREAT. The eggplant cakes...so yummy, I can't believe we shared them and didn't get a second order...it seemed gluttonous and I really should not have cared, MORE EGGPLANT CAKES, because they were delectable. We shared a breakfast calzone with bacon and cheddar, adding mushrooms....holy crap, this shizznit was exactly what my mouth and belly wanted. Asked for chili flakes or pepperoncini---they brought me pickled cherry peppers (YES, YES, YES)-my hero. I wanted to keep eating more and more stuff, and knew if I did that I would fall asleep on one of those benches in the museum. What a fauz pas. I really liked eating here. I'll start off by saying that I might be a little biased, considering I live in same village as The Tomato Café, but it's worth checking out if you're in the vicinity of I-84 or Routes 9 and 52 in Dutchess County. The prices here are pretty close to what you'd pay for a meal at a diner, or at a chain restaurant such as Outback, Ruby Tuesday's or Chili's. They have a good combination of standard menu items (burgers, pizza, salads, etc.), but also mix in some dishes for the foodies out there. The daily specials usually offer something a little out of the ordinary. I've enjoyed everything on the menu that I've tried to date. My personal favorites are the skirt steak salad, turkey BLT, and the mozzarella and tomato salad. The pizza is also excellent, and they offer personal-sized pizzas as well. I recommend the margherita pizza. And of course, the desserts are excellent as well. They get their ice cream from a creamery in Kingston, and it's worth trying. I enjoy going year-round, but during the warmer months they offer outdoor seating, which allows you to enjoy the very quaint Village of Fishkill. read more

My fiancé, brother and I had the best time here today. Christian greeted us. It was packed because of the holiday. He made our experience. In fact.. his amazing service made me write my first yelp review. It didn't matter how busy he was. Christian never lost his hospitality, quality or focus. He checked on us multiple times during our stay.. as did our awesome server, and other members of the staff. The young men who helped bus and the young lady at the register were all excellent. Their teamwork and dedication to customer service genuinely knocked me off my feet. Then the food comes.... My mouth is still watering from every single thing we tried today. On a busy holiday lunch your staff managed to get out every single item we ordered perfectly, timely, and fresh. I can't say enough about the food. I wish I could have given you all more stars.
