Food was amazing. I ordered a buffalo chicken Pittsburgh salad. Service was also good. Server was very nice and always smiling; I have been a server for a long time so I know how to spot a good one. Timing on food = HORRIBLE! We (2 people) waited OVER 50 minutes from the time we put our order in to the time our food got delivered. I have heard similar complaints from other people as well. The Trailside is our favorite local restaurant. It has a bar and craft beers, but we go for the food. My favorite is the Dawson Decker. It is piled high with turkey, ham, and bacon. The French fries are great, but there are also many other great sides from which to choose. We have enjoyed Trailside's pizzas, salads, and wraps. During Lent, you've got to try the Megalodon Fish Sandwich, piergies, and haluski. read more

Have stopped here several times after riding the trail. I would have to agree with the other raters that the servers work very hard and the management is lacking some basic skills. Food takes a long time even when not busy? You will wait 30 minutes for just bar food. The outside sitting is very nice and the bar area is always clean and well attended. The owner looks flustered most of the time when helping to clear tables. Hire a bus boy so you don't look as if you just ran a marathon. I received a hard look when there was only one chair at the only table that was not occupied outside and I grabbed an extra one from a stack of chairs. The manager looks as if he was sitting on it and I asked him to move. Going to go to the hot dog stand across the street or Fox's pizza from now on. read more

it won't knock your socks off, but for a small town, it's nice bar food, and the beer selection was good. Server was nice and helpful. West Newton is a nice little town, and my wife and I are avid bikers. This is right on the GAP trail - there's a bike store on the lower level, so couldn't be more convenient. I'm not a huge foodie, but I'm somewhat picky about food and tough and restaurants, so 4 stars is pretty good in my grading system. Like I said, it's nothing to make you swoon, but it's definitely a great find right on the trail. Pretty typical bar food, burgers, wraps. My wife had a really nice, healthy wrap, she said was yummy. i had some kind of Italian sub type thing - definitely tasty. Enjoy. read more

This casual restaurant was recommended by just about everyone in town we met...the B&B owners, clerks at the CVS, museum volunteers, etc. It did not disappoint. Great draft beer selection...and FRESH pretzels (perfect with the beer!). We ate large salads, very fresh...lots of goodies (cranberries, nuts, cheese, etc) and I have to say that it was one of the best salads we found on the whole of the Great Allegheny Passage. Basket of pretzels for $4.99...dinner for 2 with lots of beer (and the pretzels) and a generous tip: $40.00. Can only judge the restaurant by the beer, salad and pretzels...and those were excellent. Sitting on the deck overlooking the trail with pretzels and beer after a long day of riding, can't get much better than this! Service was great and if you need a bike repair...no problem! Great service. Very clean, and family owned. The locals that we met were friendly and fun for a Friday Happy Hour. The burgers are great and they have a great beer selection. I had the Ohiopyle Hoagie, which was very good. My wife had a club sandwich, which she enjoyed. The fries were very good. The corn bread was ok, I prefer mine a bit sweeter. The decor was cliche Americana like an old TGI Fridays. Was a bit bothered by the fact that there was a speaker near us for a TV which was nowhere in view of where we were seated. Overall very good though, I would good back and would take my pick eater daughter with me, since there was plenty of variety on the menu. Food - OK (had spicy Buffalo wings and French fries) Service - Terrible Location - On the GAP trail Crowed - Awful (worse than terrible) My dad I stopped in after we finished our bicycle ride for the day on the GAP trail. Hopping for a good meal and to spend a few hours there enjoying our evening. This is not how it turned out. We sat at the bar and asked for different samples of the beer on tap. We got a glasses with 70% foam and 30% beer. We then ordered different beers thinking maybe something was up with that beer. While we did get a full beer glass it took a little bit while, because the bar maid had to keep poring out the foam. We then ordered wings. They took 35 mins to come out. And were not hot (temperature wise). Not sure why it took so long. As we were watching the world cup we ate the food and stayed. The wings tasted like someone threw them in the microwave after pulling them from the freezer. We then ordered fries wondering how could you mess that up? Well they did, when they finally came out (39 mins later ) they had sat in the deep frier too long and tasted again like frozen food warmed up. At this point slowly the "regulars"(people the bar maids knew) were coming in and all were the most unfriendly of people to other patrons and the staff. One women even brought in her baby and sat at a booth right behind the bar stools. Needless to say we will not be back and would warn others to do the same. read more

The first time we went here we sat outside and it was great. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. The next time we ate inside and it was absolutely terrible. The waitress was very monotone like she didn't even want our table. Therefore service was slow. Food took over 40 minutes to receive while people around us received theirs. He ordered an extra pickle, the server came out with the bill and she said the extra $0.25 on his bill is for the extra pickle and the cook wanted to ensure that you got charged for it. However just went there today on a Sunday a little after 4pm, after the waitress came to take our order we proceeded to order our diners just to be told they don't do diners until after 5 and pointed out it says that on menu, fine point taken however people do tend to eat earlier diners on Saturdays and Sunday's and maybe when greeted with menus that should be pointed out!!!! sorry my group of 6 didn't realize this, so we were very disappointed, doubt I will be back, which is a shame. We paid for our drinks and left, just had ice tea, I think they could have just apologize and forget about the drinks but we paid. For this area, this is a great meeting place for friends and drinks. The food is simple and good, their fries and chips are delicious, and I've never had a bad meal here. They have an outdoor seating area which is always tough to find, and it's right off the bike trail. You can come as you are, in bike clothes, or dress for a casual meal. Was very disappointed when my 15 year old daughter returned home from, what we thought, would be a fun evening playing trivia with 4 of her friends. My daughter explained to me that they were overlooked several times for seating and one of the girls, very politely, asked to be seated several times only to be ignored or responded to rudely by management. Management told the waitress to seat other customers before them. Why? Finally after seeing that other customers were being seated before them inside and on the patio, they decided to gather their own wet table on the patio and wipe it down themselves. This is when the manager came over, stating in a rude manner that 15-year old's shouldn't be here to play trivia and abruptly opened the umbrella, almost hitting the girls, if they hadn't moved quickly. The girls were not asking to sit at the bar, they were wanting to order food and play trivia. I don't believe there is an age restriction for trivia night. These 5 girls are in the top 10% of their class and management thought they could treat them disrespectfully because they are 15 year old girls! The girls were respectful and polite the entire time, they ordered food, and played trivia. The previous night the girls got online, looked up clues for trivia, and were prepared. They really were very excited to play! They came in 6th out of 13. My point is, the girls weren't there to cause problems. All of the girls' parents patronize the cafe. I am constantly on the bike trail and have lived in West Newton my entire life. It is very disappointing that the girls were treated so rudely. It could have been handled another way by the adults, management. I will not patronize the cafe again and my daughter doesn't want to go back unless, "we each are treated like a person". Second thought, she is a very determined young lady and will probably be back to demand the respect that she deserves! Another life lesson learned, thanks Trailside! read more
