Good atmosphere. Even better food. I had the duck breast, and my wife had baked lobster stuffed with crab meat. We both enjoyed the food. Highly recommended. No alcoholic drinks so can't rate it, however the coffee was fresh and kept coming. Service was fast and accurate. Food was hot. read more

We were looking for a good takeout place while staying in the area for a contact free hiking vacation over Thanksgiving. We got a full take out Thanksgiving dinner from tributary that was absolutely excellent, everything spot on. We liked it so much that we came back two nights later for the prime rib dinner. My mother and I decided to take the easy way out for Thanksgiving this year. My brother got the turkey dinner, it was moist, juicy and very tasty. They gave both white and dark meat. My mother got a filet mignon steak wrapped in bacon. She thought it was out of this world. Cooked perfectly. I got the prime rib. Mine too was perfectly cooked. Our sides roasted carrots!, mashed potatoes!, tossed salads!, and pies for dessert! It was truly the best meal I have had this year!! Totally recommend!!!! read more

My lady and I came here after searching for a spot to eat on a Tuesday night. We had our daughter with us who just turned one. When we arrived we were seated right away. George was our server. He was pleasant and accomedating. The restaurant looked like a throwback to the 80's. Not a bad thing. It was very clean. The salad bar was neatly organized. The menu had a good variety of choices. George recommended a few items for us which were spot on. The draft list had a lot of good beers on it. Our meal was great. It came out hot. My wife's steak was cooked perfectly as well as my fish. George made us feel comfortable even when we were the last people in the dinning room. There was no rush. We'll be back soon. read more

The Tributary is a Winsted landmark and has been a local spot since 1979. I live in California and the last time I dined there was New Years Eve with my now deceased Dad, brother & his wife. We had a wonderful celebration and a wonderful memory. I recently came back to Winsted and had dinner with family and friends at The Trib. Our drinks were delivered promptly, I ordered a dirty martini and it was chilled to perfection & delicious. The waitress Giota was friendly and efficient checking on us just enough to make sure our food was perfect. The dinner rolls were served hot (always a good sign when the bread is hot & fresh)! I ordered the baked stuffed shrimp, it is never on the dinner menus in California and it was perfectly cooked. Everyone at the table was happy with their meals and after dinner we roamed the restaurant and looked at the pictures of Winsted which brought back memories for all of us. The manager brought us over 2 chocolate cake desserts to go as we were leaving and his generosity was much appreciated. Thank you to the staff for a relaxing evening with family & friends. read more

My husband and I have been going to the Trib for Valentines day every year for the last 4 years to treat ourselves to lobster. It's always cooked very well and a good sized chic! I love that you get a salad bar with your meal too. It's definitely a nice little spot for a "nicer" dinner out in the area without having to drive to litchfield or avon and beyond. At one time, the Tributary was apparently a reputable seafood restaurant. I didn't try the seafood this time around, so to be fair they .. may have good seafood. I can't say. I was very unimpressed with the food. The Tributary is a restaurant serving retirement home cafeteria-grade food within the facade of a "let's go someplace GOOD tonight!" upper class piano den. Canned peaches baked on over-cooked chicken! and the worst salad bar this side of.. I don't even know. Delicious. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I have read the other reviews and have to say the first one, which described Tributary as 'retirement home' food, is spot on. I've noticed that for many diners, portion size is the most important factor...the larger the better. Read between the lines at the positive reviews and you will notice a common thread amongst them. They almost all point out that portions are large. Maybe they are, but if they aren't prepared well and aren't always fresh, who cares?Shouldn't that be what's most important? If you feel the same way, stay away from this place. As for the decor, yes, it's dated, but it fits right in with the feel of Winsted...dated, tired and in need of a revamp. read more

Can't say enough about this place!! From the decor ,to the quaint booth with flowers and so much space ... The salad bar is amazing. The Mussels were amazing. The Prime rib- the best. Go for the bigger cut, so worth the $2. My bf got filet mignon that was wrapped in bacon that didn't even need the mushroom topping or rye bread, but still had it!! Ordered the Rib eye special ($24.95). I was brought a Sirloin. When I question ed the waitress she told me that it was Rib eye, but very lean...Really??? I wonder what the prime rib is? All and all I would have to recommend a pass on this place! It really is too bad because the atmosphere was very comfortable and relaxing, pretty nice if not small salad bar. I would give this a 3 1/2 not just a 3. The positives are the Prime Rib was pretty good although a tad cold. I over looked it because it was tasty. Now as I sat at my table I noticed a light bulb out, music speakers that were not on, balusters missing in the hand rails, minor ambiance things. Im not a huge salad bar fan, but it was offered with the meal. Tuna,red onions, mushrooms,croutons, cold slaw... blah blah blah. Seems like there is potential but I really wasn't feeling it. Wait staff was eating their dinner at the time we were waiting for our check. It was so quiet I felt like I could not have a conversation that would not be over heard. Stopped by here while out for a Sunday autumn drive. Nice atmosphere. We sat in the "lounge" and service was a little slow...but the food was delightfully and surprisingly delicious. To be honest, if we sat in the dining room service would probably been quicker. But the food! Definitely would stop by again when in the area. read more

Guess I should have read the reviews before coming here. Somehow it has 4 stars but as you can see I'm giving it a single star. To start about a minute after we walked in the door the lady walked up looking like she was annoyed we were there. She picked up a couple of menus and walked us to a table without saying anything and then just walked away without taking drink orders. She came back a few minutes later to take orders still not offering drinks so I included it in my meal order. We ordered the clam strips for an appetizer (big mistake). Not fresh and mostly breading. Honestly not sure there was any clam in it. Sad considering it's a seafood restaurant. Oh by the way still haven't received my drink yet. Finally the steak sandwich and cheeseburger plates came out. Disappointment again. Steak sandwich was very generous on the steak but unfortunately it seemed to be either precooked and partially reheated or it was fresh cooked and sat to long before making the trip to the table. My drink also came out shortly after the sandwiches. Asked for a refill on the Diet Coke, took a few minutes but came out. Burger was subpar, overcooked. Got the bill and again was disappointing after the quality of the meal and was charged nearly 6$ for a Diet Coke. No free refills there lol. Hopefully dinner service is better then what I experienced here for lunch. read more

This spot isn't terrible in all accounts. What I love here is the salad bar and some of the seafood options. Salad bar is fairly simplistic, but it has some wonderful options like macaroni and potato salads - and just the basics in terms of veggies etc. Make sure to hold onto your plate as they quickly snatch them up so you can't seemingly get seconds. Prime rib special is also legit here too. Huge slab of beef. Overall I enjoyed this spot with my family, will likely come back. read more

The Tributarys food was excellent for the most part. My daughter and I had the stuffed sole and the crusted cod, both were amazingly delicious. My wife had the fish with ginger and citrus and unfortunately was very bland and the fish was overcooked. The salad bar, cocktails and dessert on the other hand were fanulous!!! I don't have any complaints. I like that they have a salad bar, that way if you're picky like me you can get what you want and leave out the things you don't want. For dinner I had the vegetable lasagna and it was really good. Big portion, I couldn't eat the whole thing so it made for a nice lunch the next day. This place was way better than expected. My in laws, husband and year and a half year old daughter stopped in for lunch around 11:30 today. We all had the salad bar which was chock full of delicious items. There were your standard salad items plus coleslaw which was soo yum. There were three different breads lemon, pumpkin and zucchini raisin that were homemade. I didn't have any but my husband said it was delicious. We all had half sandwiches with the salad bar which I thought was a great deal for 9.95. The portions were AMAZING! Huge and filling. I also tacked on a cup of beef stew (which was the soup of the day) and fruit full of cantaloupe, grapes, oranges and grapefruit. All sweet and perfect. I got the soup and fruit for my daughter who loved it all. Adding those items brought the price of my lunch to 12.95$! Amazing deal. We'll definitely be back because I hear there's a lobster night on Thursday's and prime rib special on Friday's!! We spend a lot of time in Winchester in the summers on highland lake and I'm so happy to know there's a yummy restaurant so close by. Excited to try some more meals here! read more

My family purchased a Groupon that we presented upon arrival, so that there wouldn't be any problems. We believe that once the waitress/server saw the Groupon, that we were "cast aside" and treated us as a non-priority. It was so uncomfortable that we didn't enjoy our dinner and based in this experience, we definitely won't be returning. We almost felt like second class citizens. If I were a gambler, all bets would be on this woman as being part of the owner's family. The quality of the food was "okay," but I must say that my steak tasted like an Omaha Steak (which aren't very good). Again, the disrespectful treatment by the staff (only this woman) overshadowed the quality of the food (which was only fair). She didn't even fill up our water glasses... And the place was NOT busy. The Groupon was a good deal, but again, the manner in which we were treated led the Tributary to lose us as future customers. We have been to the Tributary on and off for many years... The salad bar is still very good, but the decor is old and the rooms are dark and uninviting. Add on the fact that the waitress was very unfriendly (as I have already said) you have a business that leads me to believe that they are unappreciative to their customers. If the Tributary is upset about possibly "losing money," then they shouldn't offer the Groupon to begin with. I overtipped the waitress (paying way above 20% for the full cost of the meal) since I didn't want her to feel like we were cheating her. Looking back at it now, she didn't deserve any of it. For example, I can understand that if some pays $50 for a Groupon that gives you $100 worth of food, many people probably only tip on the 50.00 they paid... We are not those type of people, and shouldn't be treated as such. This is as honest and real as it gets. Please save yourselves. I am currently parked in the bathroom, puking out my nose an hour after eating here. Let me start with the place itself. Wicked, wicked, wicked awful decor and nasty carpets. I am guessing everything is a 1970's original. But whatever if your food is awesome I don't give a crap what the place looks like. Had a groupon, sat down ordered 2 bud lights-warm. Gross. So I switch to diet coke. Ordered the fried clam strips, they were big, and good but clearly not fresh. I had the stuffed shrimp for dinner. The shrimp were cooked to death, the stuffing was made of some kind of bread. The asparagus was basically raw and the rice was slimy. My companion had a ribeye cooked MR. That was not a ribeye. And it was super rare. The salad bar was diner appropriate, not bad. Very disappointed, and now I am pretty sure this may be the end for me. read more
