I am Vietnamese. I grew up eating the best you can get from the aunties. I eat out at Vietnamese restaurants quite often. The food here is terrible. Even the hoisin and siracha is watered down home made junk. The pho broth was sweet and tasted like they added seasoning packets instead of natural sweetness. The hu tieu is not even close to what it should be. Mix of random ingredients. Hu tieu broth tasted like instant noodle season packets. Wrong noodle used. Definitely also skip the quarter chicken over rice. Dried and no seasoning. No Vietnamese flavor profile at all. They get 2 stars instead of 1 since the grilled pork and egg rice dish was nicely done with good flavors. Very odd thing at this place is they don't use fish sauce at all! read more

Great Vietnamese restaurant on Main Street in Winsted. I have driven by many times and I can say I wish I went in prior. Food is fresh, light flavorful and the staff is attentive. We had the spring rolls, dumplings and the vegetable rice entree. Delicious! Good size portions. Takeout Review: I'm a fan of this Vietnamese restaurant in Winsted. I've ordered food delivery from them many times and even picked up from there once. The food is always consistently good. I've had their pork banh mi, pho beef burrito "pho-ritto", and rice vermicelli noodle dish. All the food were affordable, fresh, authentic, and tasty. My family also agrees. The restaurant is also nice. The service was good. They are next door to Papa Boba which is owned by the same people. There was only street parking available when I went. Heard about this local Vietnamese, which closes at 730 PM so went for an 'earlybird' dinner. Cute room, fast service, lots of take out. The seafood pho was tasty and the 'medium' sized option means you can finish it. Spring rolls were fresh, banh mi was also warm and nicely presented. So I really wanted to like this place and traveled about 40 mins to try it. My very young Caucasian server is very polite, but not knowledgeable when it comes to questions. Places clean well decorated has some funny signs which I like. It's a nice menu lots of options. My pho ga was a little weak. The broth tasted very generic, as if it's the broth they use for all the pho. It lacked that deep rich pho flavor. My pho was served to be w a doe of lettuce instead of basil w no explanation. As if I'm too dumb to know the culinary difference between Thai basil and bib lettuce. When I asked for the basil they said there was none. So if the place was truly authentic they Willy's not have served me lettuce. If they were more professional they wouid have told me about the no basil when I ordered. I doubt they would have tried this nonsense if I was Thai. Also I asked for a side a carrot and daikon radish (Do Chua) and was told they could not bring me just that. So.... I guess I would eat there if I lived in town, but it's not the hidden gem I was hoping for. read more

We went here after an event with some friends, the food was delicious especially our appetizer and the waitress/host was super friendly to all of us. However, one of my friends ordered some sort of chicken dish and it came out to her completely raw and pink in the center. We pointed it out, and the waitress was not too kind about it, but when she realized we were telling the truth she was super apologetic. My wife and I stopped in to Mama Pho when we were in the area for a kayaking trip, looking for a quick bite before hitting the water. We split an order of grilled spring rolls and we each had a bahn mi sandwich. She had grilled pork and I had beef. We were very pleased with the food and, on this 90 degree day, I was happy to have a sandwich with lots of pickled vegetables on it, which kept the meal light and refreshing. The menu was interesting, with the typical foods you'd find at most Vietnamese restaurants, but there were some interesting additions, like a "pho burger" and a "pho-rriro." There were also lots of bubble teas on the menu, plus desserts written on the well-decorated blackboard. Service was a little slow but not enough to really complain about. I got the sense that this is a family-run restaurant and that not everyone who was working when we were there was the regular staff, but were family helping out for the day. Everything was very clean and the ambience was pleasant, with the walls being hand-painted with "pho" puns. We'll definitely come back to Mama Pho next time we're in the area and, if it isn't sweltering out, will try the pho. read more

Okay. So this place is on our way back and forth from Butternut. It's on the main road and pretty easy to find. I was really hoping for it to be a homerun since it's so convenient for a quick dinner stop. As a self claimed Pho expert I put this place under the microscope. 1. The summer rolls were okay. My wife mentioned that it would have been better if the lettuce was shredded instead of an entire leaf just being inside. 2. The chicken skewers were the best part of the meal. Lots of vegetables and tender chicken. 3. Okay. Now let's break down the Pho. While the soup flavor is okay it doesn't have the deep flavor profile that the best pho places have. It tasted more like beef bouillon cubes. And no cilantro? I don't know if you can call it Pho without cilantro. The amount of noodles was also a bit lacking. And while the beef was soft I somehow couldn't chew through it. It was the biggest culinary mystery. Service was good. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. I think the die hard pho fans might be disappointed but the casual fans might be just fine. read more

I really, Really don't want give a bad review, but Honestly - this place leaves A Lot to be desired. The reviews I read were positive & I was So looking forward to going, but our meal was meh. I ordered the "steak & brisket" phorito. Here's what it should have been called: 'Essence of steak & brisket'. There was hardly any meat in it at all; no exaggeration. It was mostly noodle. Now, here's an idea: put some MEAT in it & add in some julienned carrots, sprouts, etc & some cilantro. That would've been 1,000 times better. It arrived a fair amount of time After my husband's meal (which was equally confusing: Vermicelli bowl = bowl with noodles & small piles of veggies - with a tiny sauce cup in the middle for dipping?? Not sure how you're supposed to dip a forkfull of noodles & veggies into the little cup, or how that'd be enough sauce for the entire bowl,....). If you're feeling adventurous, give it a try, but don't have high hopes :( To the owner: I'm glad you're taking chances & being creative with fusion, but a little more effort & bang for your buck, would really ratchet it up. read more

We confess we've been baffled by this restaurant. For a lengthy period during 2021 we never found them open and never got our phone calls answered. We drove by and they seemed to be closed. So .... it turns out we were wrong. Happily for all of us, we suppose. They did close for a bit but reopened, then shut down ... well, whatever. The problem is ours. And the solution is wonderfully simple: they are open at a new, smaller location and serving good food for the most part once again. They are good folks, and we'd like to give them five stars. But while the Pho is tasty, the broth is a tad bland, and the rolls kinda' chewy. That said, the brisket Pho was delicious and so were the dumplings. The interior is pretty much bare bones but pleasant, and the service is welcoming. So, we're delighted they are back and look forward to more visits. We're keeping our fingers crossed. read more

The food was just as tasty as the last time we were here, but they've changed a few things not for the better. First off, it was 27° today and the restaurant might as well have just sat us outside- it was SO cold in there. The waitress was also a little much- she was nice, but she asked us 4 times if we were done eating when we clearly weren't; she was also kind of pushy when i was ordering a tea and not for anything, but I've had bubble tea before and i knew what i wanted which i why i ordered it the way i did. She seemed to be extremely confused when I asked for tapioca pearls. While the pho was flavorful, we noticed that they cut down on the amount of noodles in the dish. My husband ordered a large which he normally has leftovers, but this time he had no problem finishing the whole thing. The dumplings were a must have, and the pork buns were yummy but not the best I've ever had-the pork was a little dry. I ordered a bubble tea, as they are brother and sister stores with Papa Boba and I've been looking forward to trying it. I ordered a honeydew milk tea and wanted the tapioca pearls in it, but because Papa Boba had just opened for the day, they weren't ready. I mentioned maybe doing lychee boba instead but didn't think that would taste to great- I said I'd just wait for the pearls. The waitress insisted I try it, and said they could put the boba on the side. It took a really long time for me to get the tea and when I did, the lychee boba was inside. It was okay tasting, but at that point I would have just rather had the pearls since it took so long. Overall it wasn't bad by any means, but I don't know how soon I'd rush back. read more

Mama Pho's in Winsted is fantastic for service, food and incredibly kind owners. I have enjoyed their food for a while and invited my family to come up for lunch as they wanted to try "really good Vietnamese cuisine." We arrived, though, to find the restaurant closed, but they opened their kitchen to serve all five of us an incredible lunch of authentic Vietnamese cuisine done to perfection! This is now my second visit to Mama Pho, the first being at the previous location and I honestly left unimpressed. My visit 2 days ago at their new location was much more memorable. The decor appears to be more appropriate in a smaller, more intimate setting. I ordered a Large Brisket Pho Bowl and Spring Rolls. Both were good and I left happily in a much better mood than I was in prior. Pho truly is a "feel good food" when made with quality and love. I do however prefer a bit of a bolder tasting broth, although that is not to say that this one wasn't good, because it definitely was tasty! The server as well as the cook were both great hosts. The restaurant was very cold, I did not remove my jacket for long before putting it back on and the server immediately said she would crank up the heat. I was checked in on multiple times, and also by the chef himself. My water was consistently being refilled without the need to ask also. All in all I am happy to see such a great restaurant be in Winsted. I believe that with the change of location, the service I received, as well as the quality of food, they deserve all 5* in my book. If I still lived near by I would visit more frequently. Keep up the good work! read more

The decor kinda of says Crackerbarrel Country Store, but don't let that fool you. This place serves some delicious food. We ordered a large grilled chicken pho and a steak banh mi sandwich to share. Our server very nicely split out the soup into two bowls without us even asking. The generous portions were meals in themselves. The pho was very nice, though I would like just a bit more flavor in the broth itself. The grilled chicken is a great addition to the pho. The banh mi was absolutely out of this world. Just the right balance of crunchy, vinegary goodness. A real winner! As we finished our meal, our server came over with a plate offering us a tasting of a montecristo, a new item that they planned to serve on their breakfast menu. They are starting to serve breakfast this weekend and will be offering a mix of Vietnamese and American breakfast items. At the end of our meal, the chef came over and chatted with us. He was very outgoing and passionate about his food. It's always fun to meet the owners of a great restaurant. There aren't a lot of pho restaurants in this part of Ct, so it's good to see one move in. I hope that people come out and support Mama Pho! Give it a try!! read more

Incredible place for kids & vegetarians. After a day of skiing at Butternut Mountain (Ski Butternut) we came here 30 mins away and well worth it! Kids had steamed (they also do fried) pork dumplings and fresh Papaya slaw (shredded papaya & carrots). I had a delicious veg pho in vegetarian broth. It may look watery & plain but you add hoisin sauce into the bowl of fresh veggies & herbs. Divine! Husband ordered angus steak pho. He said, "Great flavorful broth with fresh basil." He also added the hoisin sauce & sirircha sauce. Got a Vietnamese coffee to go for the road. Owners Tony & Lin are so kind. Locals came in and clearly love them & have a warm relationship. Dear Mama Pho, I wish you would focus on executing traditional Vietnamese food before trying to go fusion and fancy. Perfect the basics: pho, bún ch giò, tht nng, bánh mì, cà phê. You're in an area where it appears many are not familiar with Vietnamese food, so I wish you would teach them the wonderful basic flavors without any curveballs like sauce drizzles or brew your own coffee, or mashups. Feature the traditional stuff! They should be your go to recommendations! If people are familiar with the flavors than feel free to show them your creativity with "Pho Burger" and "Phorrito". However, I should add are really weird mashups names because pho is soup, and those are mainly bún. Also, make sure you have confident and competent waitstaff that can be ambassadors to a new cuisine. And rip those silly Groupon messages off your tables - those are embarassing.
