Fried calamari appetizer, at Mario's Tuscany Grill in Winsted, CT.
    Tom D.

1st Timers to Mario's Tuscany Grill in Winsted this afternoon (although I did get a takeout cheese pizza from them about a year ago, I was very underwhelmed with that pizza, needed to be cooked longer. It was just not up to my standards in a state known for its pizza). We started off with a fried calamari appetizer -- it was good. My wife had some white sangria, she wasn't impressed, the drink lacked any fruit pieces in it. LONG wait for our entrees to come out. So long, that a table nearby that had been seated at the same time as us, had already eaten and left before our meals finally arrived at our table. When my wife cut into her Peppercorn steak, she realized it was undercooked, so they took it back to the kitchen. When it came back out, it was perfect, one of the best steaks she has ever had. The sauce was also outstanding. My Salmon ala Mario was "OK", I'll be honest, I've had better salmon at other restaurants. All in all, I'd say we were a bit disappointed with our experience at Mario's Tuscany Grill this afternoon. But that's not to say we wouldn't go back, if my wife had a hankering for a Bangin' steak, I'm pretty sure she'd want to go to Mario's. Next time though, I'll order "something Italian" and see how it goes. Will write an update when that happens.

Mario's is one my very favorite restaurants. It offers traditional, but also unique Italian dishes that are delicious and comforting. The entire restaurant and their staff are very welcoming and kind- the Italian decor and vibe is cozy. The food is very good! I've had a variety of dishes over time- some of my favorites are the Salmon ala Mario, Lobster Ravioli, and Chicken Neopolatana. The best appetizer by far is the Spedini! Get it! You'll want to lick the bowl. The dishes are also always beautiful and good portions. The service is always wonderful.

Looking for good bites that are local to you? Check this place out in Winsted. We love coming here for some pizza, wings and calamari. The calamari is always cooked to perfection and this time they had a calamari puttanesca special which we had to try and we are so happy we did, it was quite honestly the best calamari I've ever had. The wings are also just as good, we order them extra crispy and they are perfect every time. The wings are a great size and the meat isn't fatty which is a huge win in our book. The complimentary bread and sun dried tomato oil they have is really what brings us back every time. I wish I had the recipe, quite honestly. And of course the delicious pizzas they serve. The crust is exactly what I'm looking for when I order a pizza and it's hard to find in this area. Whoever serves us when we come here is always kind and very quick. Our drink is never empty and there is always food on the table. What's also nice about this place is the option to sit at the bar with whatever sports games are on or being able to sit in the dining room for a more formal experience. Can't wait to come back!

The salt in chicken dish almost gave me a heart attack. I arrived with my cousin early and there was another table with four people and just us. I overheard that the people couldn't get the drinks they wanted. One of them said he waited all week for a good drink and they didn't have the right stuff to make it. The waitress made him something else but he didn't get his first choice. The flavor of my chicken tasted like it came from a smelly rancid refrigerator. So I couldn't finish it or take it home. I didn't have the heart to tell the waitress, who was trying her very best to please us. And she did a great job making suggestions. I heard someone else complain her Chicken Florentine was so salty they couldn't finish it either. So much potential for a local riverside restaurant. With changes and more arts happening in Winsted, this place might not survive the demand for better quality and a new trendy vibe like Sassos or Hanqs or Foxtails. My pasta sauce was good, but the pasta broke and fell apart. Whether overcooked or not boiled properly, or re-boiled, if you cannot cook pasta at an Italian restaurant you might consider fixing that issue, stat. They need a bartender, and to get out of the 80s with their menu. Better knowledge of drinks and wines is also important. If you're not training your staff on the latest drink trends and the names of wines, you will fail. You always have to be leery of an Italian place that spells Cavatelli wrong on their menu. "Cavitelli" can't even be found in Google. It doesn't exist. Something is not right with the way the food tastes. I hope they read this, I was going to post 2 Stars, but their affable and accommodating waitress saved them.

EXPERIENCE; What did come as a surprise to me was the popularity of this rural tavern on a fall Friday evening and the quality of food and service experienced. Jason P. had reported excellent fish and chips, noteworthy wings, and selection of local beers at the tavern in his review. I ordered the fish and chips alongside the server's suggested Norbrook Farm-brewed Mount Pisgah IPA. The fish and chips dish ($20) was as Jason had described -- "TOP TIER". I look forward to exploring the menu further (although it will be hard to pull me away from the fish and chips). Kudos to the tavern's Head Chef Austin Ouelette and his crew! AMBIANCE: There are three dining areas -- an outdoor patio, a newly renovated, modern dining room, and the original dining room filled with colonial-inspired furniture. TIP: Parking lot size was insufficient the Friday evening I visited, necessitating parking on the shoulder of State Route 20 . This possibility may be circumvented via a visit on an earlier weekday. The tavern is open to visitors and inn guests Wednesday through Sunday.

Their menu has a lot of different options to please everyone in your party. They've got the typical go-to's (burgers, sandwiches, pizza) but then you get into some house made comforts like chicken pot pie and bacon wrapped meatloaf. The service is great, but since it's a pretty small place the waitresses might be pretty busy so just be patient. With that said, seating is fairly limited on a busy Friday/Saturday night or if they are having a special for dinner, so definitely make reservations! We came for late lunch on Saturday and it was fairly quiet. Needless to say, since it's off the beaten path we sometimes forget this gem is here but when we remember we never regret it!

In fact, it was common in the 80's and 90's to see multiple generations working to provide their customers the best... I had that experience yesterday. Upon walking into the spotless dining room, I saw Nonna/Mom/Great Aunt in the first booth looking over the operation while the next generation was busy in the kitchen - and working in concert with the youngest family member who was working the floor. Fantastic. So friendly, so heartwarming. I also watched as "regulars" came in for their dinner. They ALL stopped by the kitchen entry to say hello to all employees and each employee greeted them by name. I hope to one day achieve this status. The food was good. I had a side salad, fried calamari, and a small pizza (half plain, half pepperoni and ricotta). Everything was fresh, tasty, and really well cooked. I was very happy to be a part of a dinner service there. I am looking forward to trying an entree - I have a craving for veal... maybe later this week. My only knock on my experience is that their sauce is very simple, and, in my opinion, lacks a little tang to stand up to the pizza cheese and toppings. But the crust was almost clinically perfect. My half pepperoni and ricotta side was slightly floppy in the middle - but I have to take responsibility for that as it was a tough order. Each half of my pizza cooks much differently. The plain cheese side was perfect. I can't wait to go back.

I ordered one with pepperoni, sausage and fresh peppers as opposed to roasted ones (which is an option) for pickup. The restaurant was nice. If you're a Prince (the musician, not the one stripped of his title -- too soon?) fan you may love the purple hues. The crust was good chewy. I loved the pepperoni. They cupped and crisped, but in a slightly different visual way than many cup and crisp pepperoni. Very cool. Tasted great too. The fresh peppers ended up being red rather than green. This is a personal preference, but I prefer green. I like the flavor of the green juice better on a pizza. I also think the green color pops better since the sauce and pepperoni are both red. I liked the pizza, but I didn't love it. I couldn't figure out why at first. I think the primary reason was the sausage. It wasn't bad. I just didn't connect with the flavor. And also I prefer larger pieces, than the smaller crumbles Camille's used. If I had this pizza without the sausage, I would have liked it better. I do have a favorable impression of Camille's though. I would definitely return. 4.25 Stars
