Our hostess was really kind and made sure to give us extra room between the table next to us so we would have a little more space. The table itself was pretty small, we didn't have a TON of room, but that was okay. Our waiter was really nice and chill and made sure we had everything we needed. I ordered the Nutella iced latte. It was good, but not my favorite (it fell a little short). I also ordered the sausage egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on a bagel. It was good, but I ordered the egg over easy (since that's what seemed to be the standard) but it was hard to eat (since I'm used to eggs being fried or scrambled). Stopped by here with my Brother on a quick trip to Salem while I was visiting the East Coast. The Ugly Mug is right in the heart of downtown Salem. Walking in, it really is your typical New England Style Diner. The interior was nice and quaint, but the decor was a little more Salem oriented (spooky/ghost/witch etc.). Also, living up to its name there were plenty of "ugly" mugs on the table. They were actually really cute and funny - there was a mug on one table that looked like a toilet that was used to hold coffee creamer. For food, my brother and I each got a drip coffee (which came in a signature Ugly Mug), my brother got the Scary Uncle Sully Omelette, and I got the Cowboy Breakfast which came with a biscuit, eggs, pulled pork, and home fries. The food was perfect - typical no-frills, diner-style food that tasted great. My meal was excellent - the potatoes were crispy and tasty, the pulled pork was seasoned perfectly and the biscuit was fluffy and rich. Also, to make the meal more fun, the butter that came along with my meal was green (for the holidays of course). Lastly, the staff here were friendly, made nice conversations, and provided great service. Overall, my brother and I enjoyed our meal here a lot and I'd recommend anyone that visits Salem to pop in for some breakfast or lunch. The food and service is the best. Looks like an old diner, which is fine by me. I stayed at the Merchant Hotel just a couple of doors down and was fortunate to stumble on this gem. The staff seems like they get along like they're best friends. The atmosphere was fun. They don't look past the small things either, like topping off your coffee and water. Sooooo...Ugly Mug was recommended by a friend who works at the university. We get there before it opens, line is already formed up outside. Good sign, right? The diner opens now. Well...waitstaff took about 4 or 5 people inside. The rest of us remained outside, wondering when we were going to be called. They would only take one of two people at a time despite other tables being open. I get it, you don't want to overwhelm the kitchen staff with an onslaught of orders. But maybe communicate that to the rest of the folks in line who've never worked the food industry. They were looking perplexed. Once inside, when I decided to order, was told the scotch eggs were all sold out. Ok. No worries. I took the recommendation of an eggs Benedict special, with two different types of meat, pulled pork and a brisket deal I think it was. Wife had the steak and eggs. We waited for quite a bit. Watched as other food orders came out. Finally ours made it out and I tucked in. I tried the home fries first; cold. I sampled one of the bennies; cold. I was so looking forward to this, I dismissed it and took a sip of my coffee then sampled the second benny. Cold. I was sooo disappointed. From the poached eggs, meat and home fries. Nothing was even slightly warm. Wife was expecting a savory steak and egg dish, her steak was cooked in a very sweet seasoning which wasn't expected. The pumpkin pancakes helped save the meal at least. Our waiter asked if everything was satisfactory and I had to tell him how disappointed I was pointing out the cold dish and oddly prepared steak and eggs dish. We waited in line over 30 minutes prior to opening as we had researched and found this place to be very popular and busy. (A very cold Boston morning but we made the 30+ minute wait outside with our 3 year old, we're Californian's and 38 degree weather is nearly freezing for us). The hostess outside was friendly and all was great until the entire staff disregarded us for 20+ minutes after we were seated. 20 + minutes without water or even taking our coffee order. My husband had to walk to the counter and complain. When we finally got a server she said "oh I didn't see you all there" - we were sat in the middle of the restaurant not a hidden corner. Everyone else (including guests that came in much after we did had all been served coffee and had their order taken). It was evident that we were ignored as we didn't fit the racial demographic. Sad. The home fries were cold and the Omlet a bit undercooked. The whole wheat toast was amazing. My Diet Coke soda was flat (not a single bubble) and tasted odd. I'm not a fan on sending food back so I enjoyed my toast, home fries (which were tasty) and little bit of the eggs and moved on Our waitress was behind the counter on her cell phone. I stopped by the Ugly Mug Diner for brunch with a friend on our way to visit the Peabody Essex Museum (great museum BTW). My friend ordered a mushroom omelet and I had the eggs benedict. The eggs in both of our dishes were overcooked - worse than I've ever experienced. The omelet was extremely dry and the yolks in my poached eggs were nearly hard-boiled. On the bright side, the hollandaise had the proper consistency and sweet potatoes were tasty. The atmosphere is fun and prices are reasonable but the food left us a bit disappointed. Came across this restaurant via Yelp/Google and as mentioned by other yelpers it's both local and tourist friendly. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. the staff were friendly and prompt, they follow COVID-19 state issued mandates to a T. The menu was all by QR code so definitely bring a smart device with you. The prices were ok but I'll admit we're a bit high. I imagine they pay an arm and a leg in rent though so it's understandable. parking was a real pita, to be expected though being that they are located in a tourist trap. so planning accordingly if you're driving to this establishment. Actually a bit busy for a January morning, but room for my party of two. Awesome knitted crafts on the wall! Price: In line with what I expected for quantity/quality and price. Ordered: Coffee, western omelette, 2 eggs over easy Pros: Great atmosphere of a small town touristy breakfast spot. Servers were kind and attentive and the coffee was great, being served in uniquely designed mugs. Cons: The presentation of the food was sub-par. I have pictures of the western omelette but decided not to post it. The avocado was turning black and the ham and peppers in the egg weren't cooked into the egg, but instead thrown into the middle of a completed omelette like they were just pulled out of a pre-cut bag. Overall: I was more disappointed in the presentation than the taste. The decorations impressed me more. Came here for the first time with a friend after hearing about it from so many other people. We walked in at 1:15 pm hoping they'd still seat us since they close at 2 pm. We were the second to last table to be able to get seats. Our server took a little bit of time to get to our table but was precise and efficient in taking our orders but still giving us the ability to customize our dishes. For drinks, my friend had a raspberry lime Rickey while I had a hot chocolate with whip cream. This was my first time trying a lime Rickey but it tasted exactly what it looked. Very refreshing with lots of carbonation. The hot chocolate wasn't scalding hot and overly sweet that can be easily overwhelming. For our meals, we shared the fluffernutter French toast. The Greek omelet had added ham and bacon, regular home friends and a croissant instead of regular bread (+$2). I had a vegiluxe on a sourdough bread and half sweet and regular home fries. The fluffernutter was super sweet as expected with fluff. Since the French toast was a little dry, some maple syrup had to be used even though it was sweet on its own. The omelette was huge in which the fillings were cooked separately from the eggs. Compared to a traditional omelette where the fillings would flavor the eggs as cooking. The croissant was soft and buttery. I absolutely loved the home fries, both regular and sweet as they were well seasoned with at least one crisp side per piece. My sourdough bread was toasted and served as a perfect base for my vegiluxe which was a Portabella mushroom, slice of tomato and goat cheese. Service was great even though they were so close to closing. Would love to come again. Not a single thing I could think to complain again. read more

Honestly, I left pretty underwhelmed. The food lacked flavor, and the so-called "house fries" were either undercooked or tasted like they'd been sitting around all night. What made it worse was the presentation our food was brought out by someone who clearly shouldn't have been handling it, with noticeably dirty fingernails and questionable hygiene. We lucked OUT here on a Saturday morn. I've heard typically that this place is SWAMPED, we called around 11:30am and they said they didn't have a much of a wait on this rainy day. We sprinted over there, being seated immediately (blessed). My heart was split between eggs and sweets per usual, my comrades were sweet angels and agreed to split the Elvis waffle for the table. My main course was the crab cake benedict with a mix of sweet potato and potato home fries. This crab cake was a BIG boy - no joke, fresher than fresh, egg was perfectly poached (you don't appreciate this until you've been burned by an alleged poached egg). The sweet potato homefries were crispy and fluffy and what I didn't know I needed. Now while I wanted to concentrate on my main meal I couldn't. The Elvis was the STAR. I always talk smack about waffles because I love pancakes but MMMM this bad Larry proved me wrong. A crispy waffle, soft in the middle, with chopped pieces of Reese's peanut butter cup, bacon, banana and whipped cream... I mean cmon. It was ANGELIC. Use to be one of our favorite breakfast spots, up until today. Drove out of our way to enjoy breakfast in 32 degree weather and placed our name on the waitlist. In the meantime, found a cool coffee shop up the street and ordered us some coffee to stay warm until our table was ready. However when our table was ready we attempted to be seated with our coffee and were advised we could not bring an outside drink in. Keep in mind we have been here many times with a coffee from elsewhere and never had been advised otherwise. We were told it was a health code violation and there was no accommodation that could be made. So we left and were accommodated else where, where there was no issue and no health code violation (a block away) with our coffee from else where! Ugly mug! You lost a family that was loyal. However that little interaction was all it took! In my opinion it was a good place for breakfast, and great staff! Stupid policy!
