You'd be missing out if you opted to go elsewhere for your waxing services. I'd been wanting to try The Undercarriage for a while now. Before I even read the reviews, the designer in me fell in love with their clever name and cheeky logo, but when I saw photos of their salon online and heard such great things here on Yelp, I knew I had to check it out. I was not disappointed. I went at 2:30 on a weekday and I didn't have a problem finding a place to park. It was extremely easy to find, too. The salon parlor was smaller than I thought by the photos, but the colors and antiques they chose were gorgeous - vintage with a modern twist. I was offered a beverage while I waited, but I declined. They had a little settee with sliced pound cake under glass and little napkins if you wanted a snack and the music playing was positively narcotic (but not elevator music) -- soothing downtempo/chillout of some variety. I was greeted by Kirsten who was going to be doing my brow wax. I decided to see how thing went with my brows before sharing my "undercarriage". She took me back to one of the rooms and the whole way the decor was warm and relaxing. Kirsten was really sweet, complimentary and made me feel comfortable. She was upfront and tactful, as well. I'm not newbie to brow waxing so I can't say it ever hurts that much, but the wax she used was just the right temp and hurt far less than most of the quickie nail salon waxes I've experienced. We discussed "the undercarriage" while she worked and I was pleased to hear they don't treat each client the same and they take care and time with your netherbits, unlike *some* places that beat your lady garden against a rock for 10 minutes then usher you out the door with a swat on the ass and a tube of Neosporin. I'm talking to you, Brazilia Skincare! But I digress. My brows look really, really great -- not too thin, nice arch, a little bit fuller than I've had recently, which is a good thing -- I just need to get used to it again. She didn't even need to tweeze! A heads up: you can't add a tip on to the credit card receipt, so be sure to bring cash for a tip or let them know how much you want to add before they run your card (which is a little more awkward so I'd go with cash). I only go here for my waxing needs - Malinda is WONDERFUL. She offers me a glass of wine prior to each session to get me relaxed and ready, and she is quick, thorough, and a great lady to boot! I trust her completely, and she has always done a fabulous job. (One of the other reviewers gave this place one star because they weren't open during supposed business hours. Well, I can understand the complaint, but actually she shouldn't have reviewed the place at all since she didn't receive any services! In any case, this place is really by appointment only; if neither Kirsten or Malinda have appointments, they usually aren't there. Giving 5 stars to a place that provides what is usually a very unpleasant experience is saying something. The Undercarriage is fantastic! I had a great time on my first visit a few weeks ago. The decor is adorable, Melinda was friendly and personable, the whole ordeal was over before I knew it had begun. I'm never going back to Brazilia (my previous waxing go-to, because it's in La Jolla and because they can't keep people on staff longer than a month). I was in a total bind. My normal waxer, whom I absolutely loved and trusted with my life, suddenly went MIA. Girls, I know you know the terrifying feeling of finally finding someone you know won't F your shit up and then losing that person. (I'm speaking in cosmetology senses only, although I guess that applies to the rest of life.) I digress. I was freaking out about having to find a new waxer. I once had my brows almost completely taken off, so you can imagine I'd be a little gun shy about going to someone new. The undercarriage just happens to be literally right next door to my office, so I looked it up on Yelp. It's gotten some pretty good reviews, so I decided to give it a try. I'm very glad I did. I have been seeing Malinda for years. She has unbelievable skills when it comes to waxing and skin care. Not only does she exude a calming energy, she is quick and painless. So for those who are on the fence about a Brazilian Wax, she is the woman for the job. I moved away, and was forced to see others to get waxed and I will say that hands down, Malinda is by far the best I have ever been to. The Undercarriage is not only named aptly named but it is also welcoming and the decor is beautiful. They always offer you something to drink and it's usually wine, again good to calm the nerves. Having heard the top notch reviews from fellow Yelpers, I decided to take a peak inside the fine establishment that is The Undercarriage. Hoping for a walk-in brow wax, I was greeted by Kirsten's cheery spirit and, thankfully, she had just enough time to squeeze me in after her next client. As I waited for her to finish up, I filled out some paperwork noting any allergies I might have to medication, current prescriptions, and my skin's temperament. After snagging a Rolo, Kirsten was ready to wax me. I absolutely loved the ambiance of this place. It's quaint, comfortable, and truly unique. Definitely not the typical clinical set-up that most waxing salons go for. Kirsten was an absolute doll. She made me feel right at home immediately. She's also a fantastic conversationalist. It just so happens that we both hail from the Sacramento area, so we had quite a bit to talk about. The wax itself was quick, painless, and turned out perfect. I'm pleased to say that I think I've finally found a permanent waxer. I'll never risk going anywhere else. Totally cute place. Made my appointment the day before. Was called day of to see if I could move my appointment a bit. Didn't really mind (she was real friendly and flexible about it.) Wasn't offered a glass of champagne (was only for a 15 minute appointment... but was kind of expecting to be offered it because of what I've read on here...) It was a little strange because she didn't realize I'd never been there (even thought I told her) so I was new but wasn't really treated like I was? Was not given an intake form, not asked questions about myself. (um, I use a retinal?) Kind of important to know. Had an upper-lip wax. Malinda did an amazing job! So smooth and she put on some cream to help with the redness. I told her I get bumps afterwards sometimes and she used this magic wand on me that totally helped the redness to disappear! Seriously, people. I'm usually red for hours on hours after and have red bumps! It's been almost 6 hours and my face is totally normal looking! That rocks! I went here for the first time today, and I don't see myself going anywhere else. My Yelp profile states my favorite movie being Marie Antoinette, and this place is decked out french "let them eat cake" style, love it! Besides the awesome decor, I was helped by Kirsten, who was running a little behind but the receptionist was quite nice and we talked for a bit until my appointment. I was also offered some water or wine when I came in. I had some concerns about waxing, since I always just went to the places where you get your nails done, big no-no. I was concerned about my sensitive skin and getting red spots, she told me about what they use to sooth the skin and to prevent that kind of thing. She was quick and I would like to say painless, but waxing stings for just a moment. I am very glad I went here, as I have no redness or irritation. The people who work here are really nice and I was able to find street parking with ease. Maybe I was just lucky. I will be referring all my friends here from now on! read more

I've been getting my monthly Brazilian at The Undercarriage for a year now, and needless to say, from my first wax I never looked back. I can't say enough good things about this salon! I had a wonderful experience more than once here and I think I have found my new spot for all my waxing and skin care needs. I'd gone to the location in North Park a few times to have my eyebrows waxed. Melinda is terrific and she knows just how to shape my brows. I asked her about facials and she informed me that she doesn't do too many anymore. The space in North Park is small but in no way affects the services. At any rate, I figured I would check out the Banker's Hill location for a facial. I went online to get an idea of what sort of facial I could get. There was plenty to choose from so I went ahead and booked an appointment. Booking was very easy and can be done directly from the site. Just pick the service, day and time. I chose to have a customized facial since I wasn't quite sure what my skin called for. Kirsten sent me a text the day before my appointment to confirm, asked about my skin and even offered to help with directions and/or parking. It was very thoughtful of her to ask about my skin. It let me know that she cared and would be able to create a facial that worked best for me. The day of my appointment, I drove to Banker's Hill knowing I would most likely have to park at a meter. I left a little early in the hopes of finding a free street spot. The salon is located on 5th St. and it's all metered but 6th St. is all free parking. I found a spot on 6th just a two blocks from the salon. The lobby was empty when I walked in so I made myself comfortable on the couch. Kirsten came out from the back shortly after my arrival and introduced herself. She was sweet and full of smiles as soon as we met. She asked all about my skin regimen and what I was hoping to have done with a facial. I told her I wanted extractions and I'd started to notice fine lines on my face. She suggested a pumpkin peel for me and we got started. The facial itself was absolutely heaven! I was so relaxed and I loved the music mix Kirsten had playing in the background. I tend to be talkative while getting a facial and she didn't seem to mind at all. We chatted about all sorts of things and I felt as if one of my friends was giving me a facial. Not to mention that she gives the most amazing neck, shoulder, arm and hand massage during the treatment. That massage alone will have me coming back! At the end of our time together, she recommended a daily, gentle skin peel serum for me. I went on a Wednesday and was already getting the Classy Wednesday discount so I went ahead and paid the extra $20 for the serum. I also asked Kirsten about her waxing services. I told her my personal horror story of my first brazilian wax for my wedding three years ago. It was painful, took forever and I'm pretty sure the girl that did it was making faces of disgust at me. She informed me that the majority of her clientele came in for brazilians and that the whole process should take no longer than about 8 minutes. She had such a way of understanding my trepidation and put my at ease that she could do the job quickly and efficiently so I went ahead and booked another appointment to get waxed the following Wednesday. Kirsten came through as promised for my wax! She was quick, professional and still so sweet. Again, I felt like I was just sitting in there with a friend. I will most certainly be back again and again. In a city so over saturated with estheticians, it is by a stroke of luck that I found Kristen and Melinda of The Undercarriage. After a recommendation from my hair stylist, I decided to try The Undercarriage for my first ever Brazilian wax. Kristen was SO professional and business-like that I didn't feel weird or uncomfortable at all. She let me know what to expect as each bit was waxed, and was blessedly quick about it all. The person who did my eyebrows was friendly and knowledgeable - the receptionist was uncommunicative and needs major service training skills. first, she didn't want walk over to me to give me the clipboard to fill out, she stood there at the desk. i asked her how long the place has been at its location, and she looked at me like i was speaking alien. and her facial expression was deadpan. please train. my eyebrows could have been more shapely, but it was livable. read more

Granted I'm a waxing weenie and when I came here with my roommate I was very hopeful because of all the good reviews. The place is cute and clean - I love the décor. The free champagne and beverages were awesome too. The waxer didn't offer me the free no scream cream but they did for my roommate and on top of that I felt the waxer was a bit rough. She'd say, "oh did that hurt?" and then 2 seconds later pull a strip again and say like, "ya that hurts." A good friend of mine who gets Brazilians all the time and came here said the same thing. Also a bit disappointing was that when I went they didn't have hard wax or didn't do sugaring which I think is far less painful and quicker. The absolute best place to get a Brazilian. My experience with professional waxing, particularly Brazilian waxing is limited-alright this is the only place I've ever been to- but I couldn't have asked for a better experience! Kirsten was super patient, professional, and gentle (well, as gentle as one could hope given what was about to happen). Julia is awesome!! She's helped me pick the right products to balance out my complexion when I first moved to San Diego. On waxing, I would rather have a bushy eyebrows and a hariy lip than let anyone else touch my face. I have very sensitive skin and a beauty "mark" that many left either red and bumpy or totally raw. I came in from out of town and a friend recommended this place to get a bikini wax. I looked online and noted the hours say 11-7 mon. thru friday. I was heading to the beach ASAP and needed to get this done before. I arrived ten till 11pm. The place was locked and no one inside. I waited till 1130. I left, then I called and left a message at 1215 as no one answered once again. I finally get a call back by 1 by someone who wasn't sure if I was a walk in or had an appointment! I was long gone by that time! An hour and a half of my vacation day wasted. If a company has to open late due to anything (besides an emergency I can see that as an exception) it is a courteous thing to leave a voicemail at the very least on the company voicemail or a note on the door/window so things like THIS would not happen! read more

First of all I love the decor! So cute! I got my eyebrows done by Kirsten. I am very particular about keeping my eyebrows on the thicker side and she totally listened to what I needed. I have been going to the Beehive Waxing Salon since I moved to SD two years ago. I was getting frustrated driving all the way to Carlsbad, they increased their prices without telling their clients and their reception staff was extremely rude to me, so I was looking for a change. I'm a licensed esthetician and I recommend Sarah. She really listens to you, and yes, she does recommend the wine. Since I don't drink, she sold me the Scream Cream with 20% benzocaine and I'm very excited to use it. What I love about Sarah is that she's no-nonsense and is very intelligent. Ive been coming here for years! And their customer service is on point. Right when you walk in, they greet you no matter how busy they are and always offer a snack, wine, champagne, water, tea, etc. The place is immaculately clean and the decor is very vintage chic. MELINDA is one of the owners of the shop and i have been going to her for my brazilians. She just makes me feel so comfortable and not awkward because she is down there. :o) Also she is fast!!!! This really is the best waxing establishment in San Diego. I followed Malinda over from Bella Tosca when she was getting The Undercarriage started, and have been getting Brazilians from her regularly for the last couple of years here. I've had a lot of waxing and other skin care services with other folks over the years, and everyone has a little different technique and bedside manner when it comes to Brazilians. What may work for one, may not be the preference of another, so I will highlight why I think Malinda and The Undercarriage are absolutely phenomenal in their art: 1. Malinda is a no-nonsense esthetician specializing in Brazilians. I am in and out of there in 15 minutes, and not ONCE have I been bruised, burned, had skin torn off, or had it be red and raised longer than an hour. Whatever it is that she does IS PERFECT and RARE. 2. The undercarriage is a beautiful and dynamic salon that isn't just a pretty face. Decor and feel can really add to an already good experience. While I think it's great if places want to look like a sterile doctor's office or be so casual you feel like you haven't left your house, when you're paying $50 for a luxury skin care service every 5 weeks, it's really nice when the ambiance is absolutely perfect and even a bit unique. 3. Malinda is so unbelievably flexible and unpretentious. She's a woman on-the-go, like myself, so if I need to reschedule or cancel appointments, she is always so accommodating and sweet about it. She once had to cancel one of my appointments due to an emergency and recommended one of her colleagues in the salon for my Brazilian as an alternative. The other esthetician was extremely impressive as well in this. I can't recommend this place enough, and for those other reviewers complaining about the price...for a Brazilian??? Really you guys??? Honestly, I would be very wary of going to a place that offered cheap Brazilians, and $50-60 really is pretty standard for most good places. read more
