We've driven by this place hundreds of times at this point and finally stopped to give it a try. Glad we did. It's a super cute spot, much bigger inside than I was expecting with a really long bar and plenty of seating. Nicely decorated in sage greens and natural wood and stone. There is a huge patio outside with a beautiful gas fire pit, a little chilly to be out there today but later in the spring and summer it will be great. The waitress that helped us was friendly enough and there when we needed her which was perfect. Food we tried was good, got calamari as an app. It was lightly breaded and not chewy at all. I got a fish fry which was a thick slab of haddock beer battered. The fish was good, the batter was nice as well. Fries were crispy, battered pub style. Family went out here tonight for a fish fry overall I'm walking away not hating the place but also feeling like it wasn't worth $75 for a fish fry chicken salad and some fried cheese with some sodas. Fried cheese curds were pretty good they came in a really nice sauce they came out super quick waitress was very friendly in the beginning so everything was going pretty well. We got a wedge salad and added some grilled chicken to it which was $18 wasn't a huge fan It was kind of roughly made. Had some onion rings on it that were a bit too large and just didn't have a lot of great flavor. Grilled chicken was blackened not sure if that was on purpose or not as it wasn't in the menu but it was what it was. Fish fry was burnt burnt like not edible burnt. They were pretty gracious about taking it back and getting us a new one in that one was pretty good but still a bit overcooked. All in all definitely not a bad meal and a pretty light and fun atmosphere just not worth $75. But maybe that's just the new cost of going out to a restaurant? Side note that the fries are battered If that's your thing great it's not mine so that also kind of took away from the review. read more

My understanding is that Underpass is now under new ownership. Very disappointing after being there numerous times before. It is under staffed, loud, menu doesn't match online menu with now limited food selections. Underpass bar and grill has an amazing environment. Super clean, and relaxing with amazing AC. (Bring a hoodie) Food is okay. It is what I would expect for bar food. Outside on the patio, there is a wonderful fire with the view of a a beautiful garden and the calming sounds of the road. I would recommend the pizza here. I also ordered a cheese burger and boneless chicken wings. The cheeseburger was big, too much for me to finish, and did fall apart. The buffalo boneless chicken wings were good for the most part just more on the dryer side. I would recommend more sauce and ranch/blue cheese. The service here is good, while they ask multiple times if you need something and bring it quickly. All in all, I would recommend coming here, just remember that it is only bar food. read more

My husband, daughter, and I love the atmosphere of The Underpass- especially during patio season with their covered patio so you can sit outdoors rain or shine, with the big fire pit that keeps everyone warm! Some of their strengths are: fish fry's, chicken wings, pizza, patty melt, Mac and cheese, beer selection--these, never let down. We also love that we've never had an issue getting a table upon arrival (without a reservation) because the space is large. The kids menu is also better than most, so it makes it a family friendly place that we frequent. Unfortunately, our last few times dining was a different experience. (1) two times ago, we had dined on a Friday and attempted to order wings, and were told that on Fridays due to the demand of fish fry's using fryer space that wings were unable to be ordered. While bummed, because wings are a typical Friday staple of ours, we understood, and ordered boneless instead with our pizza. Not a favorite, but we wanted wings nonetheless. (2) returning, again on a Friday, we saw a couple at the table next to us sharing a huge platter of wings, excited, we ordered, assuming they lifted that rule, and could accommodate. The order was placed with our server, only for her to return and sadly tell us they couldn't accommodate. We questioned because of the couple next to us with a platter of traditional buffalo wings-- we ordered fish fry's instead, bummed, but their fish fry's are great! -- after getting our fish fry's, we had received a plate of wings. We were puzzled and said we didn't order them because we were told we couldn't. Had we known we could've had them, we were couldn't have ordered anything else! We appreciated that the kitchen attempted to still push through the order for us, but were confused and so was our server. (3) -returning today, my husband received his patty melt, and THANK GOD noticed that there were two visible pieces of metal, wire bristle in his bread from cleaning utensils that shouldn't be used on a flat top surface. I'm grateful they stood out on the surface of his sandwich, so he didn't proceed, out of fear of ingesting more, in his sandwich. Underpass had comp'd his meal, serving him instead, a fish fry. Thank you! - I ordered a Caesar salad, with chicken tenders because they didn't offer a chicken cutlet, however it's on the menu for another item. I was okay with that assuming I'd receive a hearty portion, but was so displeased to see that I likely had one cut up chicken tender (that is up-charged on the salad) with a pitiful bed of brown, wilted salad beneath it. Barely dressed, dry lettuce, mostly lettuce stalk. I mistook the chicken tender initially for croutons, and almost asked about if the chicken was coming out after, but then realized I had a super small portion. Needless to say, I was still hungry. Hangry, actually, sorry to say! My husband and daughter were long done with their meals before I received my next order, they were busy at this point, not on the kitchen, I just wished I received a better portion of protein for the up-charge. Let this be your sign to not order a Caesar here. Save that for Mulconry's on the canal, or Ferrari who both serve MEAN Caesar's with cutlets. We'll come back, we love the fire + patio, the fact that our daughter loves it here, but we hope the menu sees a little improvement outside of their fryer items. Fish was found to be good, with flaky whitefish and tasty sauce; the Brussels sprouts had good tang and roasted nicely with some parm on top. That was the good. Reuben tasted like rewarmed incompletely offering, as did the onion rings that came with it. Chili was lukewarm at best, and steak overdone. Staff was accommodating albeit somewhat forgetful on requests. Ambience is simple: you enter into the large bar and then there are tables scattered after this - somewhat haphazardly. Place was crowded with patrons mostly at the bar. It was kinda loud with large screens everywhere for sports viewing. read more

The margarita pizza is kind of a cross between a traditional American cheese pizza and an okay traditional brick oven margherita. Basically, added basil and use a more savory tomato sauce. the crust was a little too much on the burnt side, too but at least it wasn't soggy???? Not the worst pizza but don't know if I'd get it again. Maybe in a pinch. Fried pickles are delicious on the other hand. The dipping sauce pairs really well. I tried the tomato soup and the Bavarian pretzels on my second visit, as well as another helping of the fried pickles. The pretzels were good, but the soup was eh. Went here for the rochester fish fry challenge and discovered a few things. First was this is a big place with full bar and huge craft beer selection. Some more rare beers like Foam from VT and Grimm from Brooklyn. Servers are very attentive and helped with beer and menu selections. Breaded fish fry is hard to find I is my preference over traditional beer battered. This place offers both! Runners bring out food from the kitchen so food is hot and fresh. Service was good, ambiance was really nice, but what good is all that if the food is mediocre at best? Ordered the grill chicken melt, which comes on sourdough from Amazing Grains. But... they press their paninis so hard that the bread was thin like a tortilla. Why would you do that to a high quality bread? The sandwich skimped on the artichoke, peppers, and mayo, so it mostly tasted like overcooked chicken breast. Fries were good. Some of the best French onion soup in the county. Service was workman like, kinda busy not overly friendly but efficient. I never did ask if they do beer flights. Somehow lots of people on a Friday night drag their chairs across the floor like nails on chalkboard. Overall not too loud from music or talking and tables are spaced out nicely . Don't understand why' a fish sandwich is 1/2 the piece of fish with a bun but costs $1 less than the whole fish fry. Sandwich was good. Definitely will be back at least for French Onion! read more

We went here on a Saturday evening to try it out. I love the way they did the interior, very inviting and not too 'industrial" as some places seem to be lately. Good service. We sat inside but there is also a huge outside seating area. The bar is very large. The place filled up but we didn't find it too loud. The Beer list has a "top tier" and middle tier and for some craft beers, this is a great way to price things. Really varied selection as well. The food was just average, but priced very reasonably. The wings were the best part of what we had. They were old school and perfect. My Caesar was just not done well; top of the Romaine lettuce, no heart and very little dressing. It came with red onions which puzzled me and also no cheese at all. I did ask for parm which the waitress brought. Burger was just ok, cooked well but unremarkable. Jalapeno peppers were supposed to be "roasted" but were not. Fries were good. Fries were included which is great. All in all we will be back for sure. Big menu to try. read more

This is relatively new place and it's our first time here. I wasn't overly impressed. Had the flash fried Brussels sprouts as an appetizer which tasted good but they were a little heavy on the lime citrus aoli. Next we had some French onion soup which was very bland. It definitely needed some salt or seasoning of some sort. For dinner my wife had the fish tacos that had coleslaw in them and tortilla chips and pico de gallo on the side. They tasted good but there was almost no coleslaw in them. There were 5 tortilla chips, yes I said 5 tortilla chips. The pico was homemade and pretty good. I had the steak frites. The steak was seasoned well but a little under cooked and kind of small. I knew it would be kind of small based on the price but I was ok with that. I did expect it to be a little bigger than it was. The Parmesan fries were pretty good. Our server, Anna, was very good! She worked hard and was very busy. She seemed to be the only waitress on duty.
