Had dinner here a couple nights ago. I ordered off the specials menu - it was good, but one of the sides was sesame kale for a fish dish; I expected the kale to be cooked, but it was raw - a bit odd. Otherwise, we were happy. One companion had the Moroccan stew and enjoyed it. Another had a burger, one had fish and chips (fries), another a steak. Interestingly, their steak is cooked in vegan butter. Service was good. TVs are a bit hard to see from the dining area - there is a row of doors acting as a wall between the bar and dining area which blocks the lower part of each TV. Nice outdoor dining space. Heard nothing but good things about this spot and can finally confirm that the rumors are true. Super fun and eclectic environment with an awesome bar. All of the staff was extremely friendly, especially the bartender. We went on a Saturday during brunch, so had the Belgian waffle dogs and the Benny and the jets. Our first experience at the Unicorn was great! Friends recommended it and the four of us went together. Our server George was so helpful and friendly! He checked back with us several times which was so nice. The drink menu was fun and extensive with good prices. We all opted for a beer brewed especially for the Unicorn from several breweries. Great concept!! Much of the food has a Belgian twist. Besides the regular menu they have a month long special menu with 6-8 choices. The theme was a beachy one. We all enjoyed the food! Smash burgers were delicious and huge. You can order a single, double or triple. The same is true with the schnitzel single was plenty! Fries are $2.50 and you get a huge serving. My family had a horrible experience here. We came after hearing great things from locals on our family vacation. We had a hard time finding anything that sounded normal. But maybe that's just their "thing". We ended up getting an appetizer. After serving it to us and walking away our server came back 10 minutes later and asked if they tasted ok because they were burnt. Why did they serve them if they were burnt? Then we got our food. It looked bad. My mom, who had a peanut allergy, didn't know that they fried everything in peanut oil. The disclaimer is in the menu, but it's blended in to the rest of the menu and none of us noticed. She had an allergic reaction and wasn't able to breathe. The owner told us that the fda says that if the peanut oil is up to a certain temperature it burns off allergens, however it did not. Overall, just not a great experience. We popped over to Grand Haven to see Lake Michigan before our return flight. We needed some lunch and stumbled upon The Unicorn Tavern. What a find! A Belgian restaurant tucked away in Grand Haven. They have a nice sized parking lot as well as a bike rack for folks pedaling over. We were welcomed in and seated right away. The ambiance is fun with repurposed doors connected together to form a wall between seating areas. They have Chimay red, white, blue and green on tap. All four in one place! We met Garry, the owner, and chatted Belgian beers with him for a few minutes. My husband ordered the Fish n' Farmhaus Frites paired with the Chimay Red, Premiere and I chose the Loaded Farmhouse Frites paired with Perrin's Black ale on nitro. Belgian place, you get something with frites! Our meal was out in no time. My frites had bacon, beans, sour cream, green onion and Trappist cheese sauce. Yum! Visited again on a busy Friday for dinner. I was excited to introduce my partner to the deliciousness, plus the hyper-local location is so lovely. We only had a quick 15min wait before being seated. The server was very prompt and helpful. We ordered beverages and got the mushroom poutine as an appetizer. Good choice. We devoured it. Unfortunately for me, I was informed the prime rib sells out within an hour, so although a bit disappointed I couldn't try it, the steak and fries was wonderful. Typically, I stay clear of steak at restaurants, because of their unlikely Ness to truly cook it medium, but I was truly not disappointed. It was AMAZING. Buttery and mouthwatering. Also, I highly recommend the hollandaise. Partner got a double Brussels, without Andalouse, onions and mustard and loved it. Amazing venue, Amazing service. Spoke with the owners about the history of the restaurant and what it means to them and it was a great experience. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating as we went with our infant daughter and our well-behaved dog. As for the food, I got the schnitzel sandwich which was good, probably could've used a bit more sauce, but the schnitzel was very tasty and love a pretzel bun. My wife has the mussels which she said were good as well. The only thing I didn't love was the Belgian onion soup, a play off a french onion soup. It was ok, but I wouldn't get it again. Everything we heard when researching this area was that The Unicorn Tavern is THE spot! We came for dinner and drinks and had a fabulous time! As visitors, we were immediately impressed by their culture of hospitality it is one that is chill, inclusive, and genuinely welcoming. The menu is expansive and everything sounded uniquely appealing. We started with the "Bramble On!" as they're known for their gin cocktails, and this one was refreshingly complex and perfectly balanced. We split the "Fish 'N Frites," which came with three incredible dipping sauces (garlic aioli, andalouse, & a spicy curry ketchup which were all so flavorful) and the fish was crispy, tender, and spot-on. We also split "The Brussels" smash-burger on a pretzel bun and OMG it was mouthwateringly good. Every bite was packed with flavor, and honestly, we still can't decide which entrée we loved more. Huge shoutout to our server, Jessica, she was not only helpful with the menu, but gave us a full crash course on the town and all things Michigan. Funny, engaging, and full of personality which m made the whole experience unforgettable and left us with her 84yo mother's joke of the day! Before we went to have dinner at the Unicorn we had drinks at the Tiki Bar next door. The place is adorable but the drinks are overpriced and so very small. With lots of ice, it was barely 3 sips for $13.00. The food at the Unicorn was wonderful, the service was great and we will go back there... just skip the Tiki Bar. read more

East Grand Haven is a GEM! We had driven by here a few months ago and thought we will find someplace amazing to eat around here, no question. And here we are! The Unicorn Tavern is a Belgian-motif restaurant with THE friendliest staff you could ever come across! Ours was pretty fantastic (I believe she was also the bartender). The owner was there at the far end of the bar and the actual CHEF came out to our table to tell us to use the lemon that accompanied our Boney Bread to enhance the already delicious flavor of the bread to a whole other level. The whole feel of the place was homey and funky and friendly. Their bathrooms are gigantic! We ordered the Boney Bread to start, which was decadent. The lemon made it so much more mouth-watering...he was right! We had to get the Drunken Flemish (as it featured both the beef stew and the frites)...so hearty and clearly not a health food! Ha! My husband and I ordered a small of that and had to stop our server to ask if we, in fact, received the small as this bowl of goodness was GIGANTIC. (IT WAS!) He wanted the burger with the Danish Bleu (pungent...just the way he likes it) and I ordered the Winter Roots salad. (I truly love a good salad...plus with everything else we ordered, I knew I could count on lunch for tomorrow with this very hefty salad). This place is amazing! It really is a unicorn! It's a themed restaurant where the food is actually delicious and the drinks are packed with bold flavor. I almost don't want to share too much about this place because it's quickly going to become one of my West Michigan hangouts. Food fare here is Belgian-styled. You don't get fries. You get FRITES. And they're dang good (and brought to you by the same chef who invented some space-named fries for a chain of local feline-named restaurants). Order the steak frites, and you get a respectably thick-cut New York strip steak cooked to your liking and full of juicy flavor. We also love the mussels, served straight up in a pot of steaming wine sauce. You'll even have fun watching everyone else's food come out because everything just looks so good. Bartenders know how balance the flavors, too, and they've got a rotating bevy of cocktails that'll spark a dance party on your tastebuds. Or try one of their authentic Belgian beers on tap. Prices are reasonable. You seriously can't lose. Annnd--it's east of 31, so away from the throngs that often crowd the waterfront. We stopped in this bustling neighborhood restaurant on Sunday night, and they were packed! It's obviously a very popular spot and for good reason. While we waited more than 3 employees acknowledged us and said something like "be right with you!/welcome in!". There was about a ten minute wait for a table, they texted me when it was ready which was super convenient. Once we sat down we were given menus and waters right away. The server was super knowledgeable about the menu which was very helpful since it is a lot of information to take in. They have several "make your own" options for drinks which are super fun because once they know what you like they can guide you on a decision. Our choices were spot on for our tastes. The food side also had several options, including some very yummy looking vegan/gluten free/dairy free options. These are important to so many people and I really was glad to see unique offerings in these categories (not just salads, fries, and bunless burgers). You also have a choice for a small portion on most everything. We ordered a burger and the hot chicken and waffle, both with a side of pomme frites (both small portion option). The burger was perfect and the chicken and waffle were probably the best I've ever had. The chicken was crispy and glazed in a spicy sauce that was excellent. These were both more than enough food and I still brought chicken and waffle home. Lastly, the ambiance and the vibe of the whole restaurant was so relaxed and friendly- we genuinely just wanted to hang out there. Staff was super friendly and we appreciated the conversation with the owner, who shared the awesome backstory of how it all started. Beer list was great and it's super cool how they do a featured brewery each month. I've had Unicorn Tavern on my list for almost a year, so I was excited to finally stop in while on a little day adventure to Grand Haven from GR. I'd browsed the menu so I knew the food offerings were unique with a Belgian influence. We were greeted right away when we walked in and given an option of a booth or a high top table so we chose a booth. Our server was super kind and wonderful. The menu is fun to look at, but a bit overwhelming as they have lots of options! I recommend reviewing it ahead of time. Nate and I ordered the Scourmont schnitzel to split with a side of frites and a cup of the Belgian onion soup. The sandwiches come in lite or full portions. The lite portion of the Scourmont schnitzel has one pork cutlet, and the full portion has two. We got the full since we were splitting. I didn't order anything to drink but they have a lot of gin options, including a build your own gin and tonic section, as well as other drinks, beer, wine, and N/A options. The proceeds from some of the drinks went to local charities and organizations, which I thought was super cool. The vibe inside is pub-y with lots of fun art and artifacts to look at. I also liked that our menu cover was colored by a tiny visitor - so cute! Seems like a family-friendly spot as we saw many kids. It was a bit of a chilly rainy day when we visited, so the food was perfect. It wasn't overly heavy which I appreciated. When our food came out, the sandwich was cut in half and they provided an extra plate - such a great touch that feels above and beyond. The food was amazing. I loved the sandwich as the pretzel bun was soft and easy to bite but held up to the large, super crispy cutlet. I also loved the frites and the sauce we ordered - it tasted a bit like spicy mayo. The soup was perfect to warm us up and I loved that it had cheese topped bread. Everything was perfectly seasoned and not overly salty. The owner stopped by our table to clear some plates and he was really pleasant to talk to.
