I don't consider myself the traditional buyer of crystals. However, I recently found myself compelled to buy some. Searching for locations nearby me, I stumbled upon The Universal Connection store. They have a solid collection of crystals and I did end up buying ~$200 worth. This was pricy, but I was willing to splurge. However, while I appreciate the items I bought, I would not go back to this store and slightly regret supporting them. The workers were distinctly more welcoming to certain customers than others. Even during checkout with a fairly large purchase, they did not help package, label or answer questions without prompting from me. Additionally, I understand the nature of this store and the type of personality it would take to run it- but the casual conversations of the workers about cyber attacks and conspiracy theories was slightly off-putting. I've been here many times. Yesterday around 5pm was different. I likely won't be back again. I purchased 2 crystals a couple weeks ago that are labeled as jade. My own research yielded they are actually serpentine. I mentioned this to a store rep, and received pushback and unnecessary combativeness. I was here today to enjoy myself and grab some new items, not to be spoken to in such manner. The rep was highly offended and suggested it was my word against hers and that jewelers deal with higher end gems and not crystals. She went on to state they don't sell fake stones, and the owner has been using the same vendors for many years. I never said the stones were fake. I mentioned they were very pretty and I'd be keeping them. Serpentine is a great crystal but not at all in the jade family and not for the particular intensions I had in mind. The store rep turned her back to me while I was in mid sentence while trying to explain I had not called the crystal fake, and she grabbed the store manager. The store manager was very polite and informative. She took her time to hear me out and advised she would let the store owner know. That's all I wanted! When I got to the counter to pay for my items, the store rep that was rude to me finished assisting the customer ahead and then asked the store manager to step in to assist me instead of taking the opportunity to smooth the situation over or to thank me for coming back. This rubbed me the wrong way, and I left without making a purchase. There are too many crystal healing and botanica shops around to spend money at a place that doesn't treat you nicely. There was a lady who came in crying in the store and the worker was just trying to offer her items to buy. It really rubbed me the wrong way because in most cases you'd console someone not just tell them they could buy items from your store because it will help solve their problems. The store profits off of cultural appropriation too. They use things from closed practices too and just have many Buddhist statues and Mayan things laying around to seem spiritual. After she identified the aquamarine, I asked her if they have that specific crystal in stock as I walked towards the shelves and she started doing something else by herself Completely ignoring me. At check out (purchased tumbled citrine & clear quartz) I asked another girl if my crystal that I bought from another shop was aquamarine and she said, " idk *chuckled* you're the one that bought it." SMFH.. I wanted to be certain since I had a couple green ones. (The first girl that "helped" me first was at the other cashier doing nothing). So then I asked if she had an extra meaning card for aquamarine since there wasn't any on the shelf and she said that since I didn't buy it there I couldn't have one (asked me for proof that I bought it elsewhere) but she'll let it slide this once. Although my intention was not write a review, I really want to because some of the review claiming racial profiling are downright wrong and misinformed. I'm a woman of color and feel nothing but respect when I come in. The store manager is friendly, opens the door for customers upon entrance and exit, and let's everyone know protocol. If you don't know what the protocol is, let me state it here: IF THE STORE IS AT FULL CAPACITY, SHOP TIME IS 15 MINS. IF NOT BUSY, YOU ARE FREE TO BROWSE FOR AS LONG AS YOU WANT. I've been coming here pre-covid and post, and can tell you that the size of the store is what leads to the shop limit when at capacity. It is strictly enforced for safety. Every single person I have met here has greeted me, gone out of their way to ask me if I needed assistance or had questions, and let me try on the same ring that I keep eyeing in hopes that it one day is the perfect match for me. The little mesh bags are offered when the store is slow, but when it gets busy there is no harm in saying "may I please pick a bag." I usually leave things like this up to Source, but dang!!!!! I live in San Jose and I thought it was nice having a crystal shop so close by, but I've DEFINITELY felt uneasy about the customer service there. I thought I was just being paranoid the first time..then the second time I was more suspicious... Now, after bringing family members and friends to their establishment I can confirm that some, specifically the blonde woman/women who work there are rude and judgmental if you do not share their ethnicity... if you catch my drift. I always like to grab a bag of their $10 fill-it-yourself pouches with any purchase, and the lady who checked me out today actually accused me of trying to rip them off by "sneaking a medallion rose quartz into my gram bag" because someone else had probably misplaced it. I looked her in the eyes with all my sincerity and explained to her that I would never do something disrespectful like that. Her reply, "well you'd be surprised what people will do," as she removed it from my bag and put it to the side. Surprised I was indeed! She even went as far as charging me for a bag and refused to bag my items. I felt disappointment for taking my best friend there for her first crystal shop experience and hearing her tell me how judged she felt and lowkey ripped off by their prices. I was hesitant on coming due to the recent 1 star ratings. I came from the valley to visit this shop in Willow Glen and I was satisfied. I was notified right as I walked in that I only had 15 minutes to shop. I felt like that was very little time to look at everything, but I grabbed what I needed and what I was attracted to. There was one lady who eyed me the whole time I was shopping, and one lady behind the counter than kept checking up on me if I needed any assistance. Everything was fairly priced, and I was happy to spend under $20! If I were given a little more time to shop in peace, I would've found more gems. Giving this place a 3.5/5 stars due to the fact that one if the workers rushed my boyfriend and I out, which resulted in my boyfriend leaving empty handed :( He was about to purchase a crystal (amethyst) but the worker informed us to hurry which rubbed him wrong and ended up leaving. He was clearly browsing and I was still finishing up my purchase at the register so I don't understand why she rushed him And there were 7 people inside when we entered, when she had asked us to finish up there were 5 of us inside while 2 were outside~ she could've easily asked if they wanted to come in separately like I've seen most stores do. She said that there would be a 15 min time limit if a line formed outside and there were 2 people waiting outside... that's not a line? I have to wonder about the horrible written reviews I have seen for this place. I am Hispanic and saw some of my cultural things for sale at this store for spiritual purposes, etc. and it did not offend me. I didn't take it as cultural appropriation. I find it perfectly acceptable and okay that they sell items from many different faiths, cultures, and what not. Why is there this need to own these items and make it only exclusive for the people that originate from that particular culture? If we are even going to have a chance at getting to a better place in this world then we need to share cultural items, beliefs, traditions with anyone who is interested. We can all benefit from the wisdom that comes from other groups. I know people have a problem with New Age stores being a mishmash of different spiritual tools from varying cultures, but that is the natural progression of things when people of different backgrounds come together. Spiritual tools and traditions mix, old ideas become obsolete and are discarded. New ways of using tools begin to take shape and new ideas are born and shared. This is the ONLY way to advance ourselves as spiritual beings. The employees at the store didn't come off as rude to me at all. They were nice and helpful and answered my questions. I like that they had an assortment of books and oracle cards but did notice that they lacked a few, if any, books on Witchcraft or Wicca. If you are looking for those kinds of books then you might want to try another place. Still, this place has an assortment of crystals (which is all the rave right now) and other trending items. I took my son and his friend in to check this store out, wheeww the Energy in this store is totally off, bad, terrible... the older lady I believe she is the owner is nasty as she is passive aggressive very much... my son ended up spending about $90 in there which we regretted since everything is over priced. I have to say, there is something about the Universal Connection that is hard to describe. I used to pop in after a hard day at work and find that all the stress and tension would just fade away. The presentation of crystals and the like is beautiful and they offer a large selection. I have always found the quality of the cut stones to be high and often have left with more than what I originally intended to find. When COVID hit I was a little devastated that I wouldn't be able to visit the UC in person. Its taken till September to realise that the wonderful people at the Universal Connection were still working behind the scenes to offer an online store. I ordered some Rose Quartz for my wife on our anniversary, which was on our doorstep two days later. It was well packaged, and included with the same quality service I have had in person - a little bag and information card along with a personal message with the receipt. I will start by saying that I have been here several times and I LOVE the items and variety of deities and spiritual items this little nest has to offer but, each time I have come into the store the staff, Particularly Randi has been very minimal in assistance, the energy of the staff counter balances the stores energy. This place is typically my last option for soul gem mining due to their over priced EVERYTHING (Incense and Oracle cards are pretty average in pricing). To get to why I am bothering giving my time I can not get back, I went into the store as a last minute spiritual bday gift for my boyfriends mother, while in the store we ended up purchasing several other things including two Hematite rings, I knew very little about Hematite so I asked the young lady that was working at the register, I asked her if the rings were natural or man made because they were very magnetic, she was not sure so she asked the older woman who replied that they were natural. The rings were $19.50 each but none the less I thought it was cute my boyfriend and I would have natural Hematite rings that were magnetized towards each other when we hold hands. After getting home I decided to look in my gem books as well as the infamous GOOGLE... I found that Hematite is not supposed to be highly magnetic or so all the sources said. I decided to call the store to which I spoke with Tracy, I mentioned that I was not familiar with Hematite and that every thing I was researching was stating that it should not be so magnetic. Tracy was very nice but basically said,"you can't trust the internet and that Hematite actually is magnetic depending on the level of Hematite it has in it." I just thanked her for her time and the bit of knowledge she shared and that was it, I was satisfied with a chance of the rings being natural or man made. Later in the day my boyfriend was doing some light work and the ring broke in half like glass, the ring on the inside was completely black and stuck directly on my fridge like a magnet. We knew there were no returns or exchanges per the receipt but opted in bringing in the ring to at very least show them. Randi's reply was,"Hematite is very fragile, I suggest you be more careful when you wear them." Randi also stated that" if you even so much as squeeze the ring it will break." They of course would not exchange or refund the ring which is fine but as a Yogi it seems a bit out of the realm. I am a firm believer that Karma has a significant place for unethical behavior. I sadly will not be back to UC store and I hope that the San Jose area opens up more of these little gems with people who are genuine and authentic. So I've never had a great experience. The 1 star is because they have a big selection. But everything is WAY overpriced. I was buying a crystal for me & my son and I needed a chain to go with them. She showed the chains that go with them or offered leather cord. There was stainless steel & silver. Both over priced. I chose 2 stainless steel chains to go with the crystal Pendants she is selling me. I checked out and wanted to bring the necklace and pendent home to my son assembled in a cute bag ready to go. So I tried looping chain through crystal jump ring & it didn't fit. The girl then grabs out a janky tool to help me because I said maybe you can squeeze the jump ring so it'll fit I figure it's OK I won't get something different I will just make this work , trying to help a local business out. So she can't seem to do anything she hands me the tool I can't do it then the jump ring comes off so I say let me just get something different because this obviously doesn't work together and she says oh if you want another chain you have to buy another one. I was shocked ! I just spent 95$ and I was still standing in the store ....at the checkout counter! . And she says "sorry we don't return anything." I literally was still in the store at the checkout counter.why are they picking out & trying to sell me a chain and pendant that don't go together that she sold me together & told me go together???? and is now telling me that I can't have a different chain that actually fits , even though I'm still there. Never have I had such bad experience with customer service. It's your responsibility as a business owner to make sure every customer that walks through your doors has a comfortable, good and safe shopping experience. it's your responsibility to make sure every race, gender, or person is represented and treated equivalently in your store. as a person of color I should not feel scared walking or weary you are following or watching me. as a store owner you should be addressing EVERY negative or racially sensitive review. it's very unprofessional not to address this topic especially in today's times. this i a very real current issue that needs to be addressed. CLEARLY this is an ongoing issues within the store. Nonetheless i still purchased my items. The store store has a great selection but because of the reasons stated above I will no longer give this shop my business. i hope the owner receives healing for whatever she's battling, that is causing this negativity energy that she is spreading.
