I'm writing this review in the spirit of genuinely hoping management can improve, as me and my party were incredibly disappointed by nearly every element of our service today. We came in specifically to watch the World Cup Final given the advertised drink specials; unfortunately, however, we were seated near a TV with bad WiFi service, so the game was about 20 minutes delayed from the live broadcast. When we flagged this to management (again -- this is for the World Cup Final), we received a flippant response, noting that there was nothing they could do given the WiFi and the TV's position. When we then asked to move to a table near a TV without the delay, we got a reluctant "we'll see what we can do"; this immediately put us off even further. Keep in mind -- this is after already experiencing roughly a 30 minute delay in receiving our drink and appetizer orders, and being told there were no drink specials for the game despite both their own Instagram story and post advertising otherwise. To the credit of our server, she was incredibly nice and tried to make up for the misunderstanding about the specials and the drinks/apps delay, but by the time we were waiting for our second round of drinks (which never came), we decided to abandon ship and look for another bar to order our mains and continue watching the game. I understand that this is still a newer restaurant and is likely just trying to work out the kinks; however, the lack of service from management specifically was what was particularly disappointing for our group. Really unfortunate experience at this place. Bad drinks, mediocre food, inconsistent service, and too expensive, Our first round of cocktails took forever to come to our table and when they finally arrived they had clearly been prepared wrong. They were watery (not martinis as advertised) and had either been diluted or left in the shaker for too long. Additionally, the server forgot a simple glass of wine multiple times even after being asked about it repeatedly. Later, we ordered a round of draft beers which came out flat and stale, tasting of a dirty draft line. This pushed my concern beyond the training or capabilities of the bartender and made me worried about the overall quality control and sanitary situation of the bar and kitchen. I wanted to love this place. But I have to give some hopefully constructive criticism. -- Martini was watered down and expensive. Barely acceptable for $17.00 -- Guinness came from a can. I saw him pour it and actually asked the waiter about it after it was served to me and he told me that the tap was broken. I'm sympathetic to unexpected hiccups like this but there's no reason he couldn't have told me when I ordered: "hey the tap is out today is it okay if it's from a can?". I would have ordered another drink. -- I asked what kind of oysters they were serving today. They had no idea. They went back to the kitchen and told me they were serving: "horseradish and mignonette oysters". I kid you not. Needless to say I did not order any. -- Food was pretty good? But some if not most of it was extremely definitely probably dressed up Sysco once-frozen stuff. Burger will cost an extra TEN dollars if you want a handful of fries and a thimble of 'dipping sauce'. Fish sandwich did include fries but cost TWENTY SEVEN DOLLARS. Did include a sprinkling of salmon roe which was a nice attempt to class it up for the instagrammers, though. -- Other little things: We were some of the only people in there but had to wait a weirdly long time to get an order in. Water glasses were way too small. The logo for the restaurant looks like a 10th grader's graphic design midterm done on windows 98. The Waiter clumsily fumbled our dishes. I spotted someone in the kitchen picking their nose (can't do that if you have an open kitchen, man!) not a huge deal to me, honestly. But c'mon, man. I want this place so succeed! They got a lot of things right, here. And I'm focusing on what went wrong in an attempt to help. Really! But everything about this place reeks of a kind of weird private equity (looked it up and it is owned by the 'gold duck hospitality group') focus grouped soulless place that you would see in the suburbs ten years ago that is trying for a kind of authentic 'brooklyn' (or in this case Brooklyn but vaguely British) experience. They're new so I'll try this place again in a year or two but something tells me they won't still be here. read more

We stopped in for a quick dinner on a cold night out - 17 degrees. Burrrr! The new spot in Prospect Heights is nicely laid out inside. The dinner tables are great and the bar is very inviting. The two of us had a glass of wine each. Very hood and reasonable. We ordered comfort food - chicken parm and chicken risotto with squash. Perfect portions and not too expensive. Note that the offer Happy Hour until 7pm which we missed but we will go back and try it another time. The waiter was cheerful and helpful with his recommendations! read more

Since this is a new establishment, I'm rating this on a curve. I unfortunately didn't enjoy my experience here. I'll start by saying since I'm gluten-free, I always look up a menu before I go to a restaurant. So I did look up this place beforehand and they had noted a few items were gluten-free but once I arrived, it seems that they changed their menu and had very limited options for me. In fact, I had to ask the waitress what in the salmon dish made it not gluten free and if they could make any accommodations and she asked me if I would like her to speak to the chef and I said yes, that would be great. She came back and said they had mislabeled it and actually everything in it was gluten-free so that is what I went with. The salmon itself had a nice flavor to it, but unfortunately wasn't evenly cooked and then the eggplant that they paired it with was meant to be crispy, but I think they poured too much sauce on it so it had this weird soggy texture. I also ordered a mocktail and it wasn't well mixed and tasted very sugary, even after I stirred it. The saving grace of my meal was the gluten-free chocolate chip cookie with ice cream. That cookie was so warm and delicious, you honestly couldn't tell that it was gluten-free. My friend didn't enjoy her sticky toffee cake and said that it was very dry and didn't have enough caramel. We did mention to the waitress that she didn't enjoy it, but she didn't acknowledge it. A bit later, the manager came by to clear our table and asked our experience and she told him her thoughts on the dessert and he said he welcomed it since they were a new establishment. The restaurant itself is beautiful, very spacious, has great lighting and seems to be drawing in a crowd already. I personally wouldn't go back given the limited options for me, but I think if you don't have these limitations, you might have a better experience. The first thing you realize when you walk into a place is the ambiance. This place has got a real simple, but elegant appeal to it. It's classy and casual at the same time. I really enjoyed my meal and have been back a few times, when I am in the neighborhood. I highly recommend this as a place for casual date, business meeting, or night out. Took the in laws and my kid to a late 2pm brunch yesterday. Everyone enjoyed their meal (flatbreads, French omelet, shrimp toastie, loaded baked potato, and the star of the show the cabbage). I really appreciated having a dynamic and interesting vegetarian entree (the cabbage had a char with mashed potatoes and a mild curry and nuts for texture). The servers were really attentive, warm, and friendly. I definitely will return. My only feedback is to increase signage outside, leave a water carafe on the table since the cups are small,and to bring out all the entrees at the same time. OMG, the vaux wedge salad and the lobster and shrimp risotto were the best we have had in Brooklyn! The food is a mixture of American classics with European flare. The flavors are exceptional and the service was so good we ended up staying two hours longer than planned. The wine list was much better than we expected and the owners came to greet us and made us feel at home. We can't wait to come back, this really felt like a high end social club with five star food without breaking our wallets. Can't wait to come back and bring friends. read more

My girl and I popped into the new Prospect Heights restaurant The Vaux Social this last weekend, and we loved our experience! We shared the French Onion Fritters = awesome, super-crispy with decadent mornay sauce, & the hummus = super sexy display / delish! My babe ordered the Crab/Shrimp Burger (with the egg and the bacon add-on). I could barely get a taste- gobbled up! My Steak Frites was classic, perfected here, with green peppercorn sauc/ loved it. The ambiance is warm and service is on point. I'll be back for dessert, sticky pudding has my name on it, we couldn't fit it in this time. This is a fairly new restaurant bar that has opened! It has a bakery in the back section of the interior. I can see this place grow to become a large gathering space for Sunday brunches with families packed. I had their burger and it was such a nice treat. The plate came with a splendid amount of cheese and fries, decorated to reminisce a feast of a time! This food was sub-par. Its new, and maybe they need to work out the menu kinks. But the food was not well-seasoned. It was expensive (Brunch Burger was 18 bucks w/o a side salad or fries etc). We live near The Vaux Social and had been regulars when it was Vanderbilt, a bit less when it became the family-oriented Patti Anne's. So, we were excited to see that there were new owners and it had opened. The menu looked rather basic but we decided to give it a try. The place was entirely empty on a Saturday evening at 7:30pm but the hostess still asked when we walked in whether we had a reservation! She then proceeded to confer with some man in a jacket (the manager?) about where to seat us. They put us in a booth towards the back, across from the open kitchen, next to a window leaking cold air. The velvet curtain on the window kept blowing onto the table, until we finally asked them to move us to another place. There was no one else in the restaurant other than a couple of guys seated at the bar. I counted at least SEVEN servers standing around and still the service was just awful. Our waiter was inattentive and annoyingly slow. We ordered cocktails (they were okay) and a beer (no hazy IPAs). The "blue cheese wedge salad" is chopped up iceberg lettuce with a heavy blue cheese dressing and two pieces of candied bacon on top. Like the cocktails, it was just okay. Then, it took another 45 minutes for our 3 burgers to arrive. They were overcooked and over-salted balls of ground beef with some sauteed onions and a slice of cheddar on top, a fried pickle, and thousand island dressing on the side. We had to asked for ketchup three different times before it arrived in a little cup. We asked for a slice of tomato, or a leaf of lettuce for the burger. Again, had to ask twice and finally were told they do not have tomatoes. We were 3 but 2 leaves of lettuce arrived after we finished. Finally, the fries arrived (which you need to order separately) and were partially spilled onto the table. No problem -- they were almost inedible because they were coated with garlic salt (the menu specifies herbs but perhaps like the tomatoes, they were out). With so many truly excellent places to eat on Vanderbilt, Vaux just isn't worth it. read more
