Went to this restaurant for the Brunch on Sunday. Wife and I arrived without reservations and we were told to wait a few minutes. The host came back and said there wouldn't be a problem as long as it was an inside table. When the waitress arrived with the water we asked her for two Bloody Marys and we went to serve ourselves from the buffet Food was delicious starting with the omelette station and the rest of the items including the prime rib. The drinks never arrived and the waitress never came back with water, she actually never came to our table, we had to ask for water to the busser same for the check. I am not sure what their system is but looks chaotic since you help yourself to the food it should be fairly easy to assign zones or tables to each server. We walked out to the veranda and came back in the building to seat in the lounge where a pianola was on auto play, really nice environment that takes you back a few decades. We came here for Sunday Brunch our reservation was for 12:00 PM, our party arrived on time and we were seated immediately. Margret was our server somehow I don't think this was by accident I had met her a few days earlier at the hotel bar - she has been here for years and years and some of our friends have been enjoying her amazing personality and high level service for a decade or more. Once seated she offered to put our drink orders in while we explored the feast laid out in the adjoining room, the drinks are made at the hotel bar but they have a table set up to allow you to customize your specialty drinks i.e. Bloody Mary's are amazing before any modifications. The food was simple but elegantly displayed, the quality of the product was exceptional and the preparation was very creative and professional. I started at the omelette station two burners and a limited selection of ingredients but all delicious and being I'm not a veggie guy the meats and cheese exceeded my expectations. The neighboring stations were both carving stations, beef and ham both cooked to the perfect temperature and very tender and flavorful - yes I made two trips. I tried a few of the other sides trying my best to stay away for the carbohydrates that most of the side dishes bring with them. Well as much will power and restraint that I have it all slowly eroded away each time I passed the dessert table. The chocolate fountain surround by sliced pineapple, strawberries and cubes of moist cake, lemon and chocolate pies, cheese cake, chocolate cake, cookies and omg peach cobbler - trust me you can gain a few pounds just by being close to this table. The service was spectacular and the total package price is ridiculously reasonable - I don't think you need to lower your expectations to throughly enjoy this brunch but you do need to keep things in perspective this is a small community and this nostalgic hotel / restaurant puts it all out there so enjoy... read more

We had a party of 11. We are all local residents. We thought we would give it a try since there are new owners. We had reservations for 5:30 It took 45 minutes to get our drinks. Then we placed our dinner orders. We waited over an hour for four of the meals to come out, another 20 minutes for four more meals, then another 20 minutes for the last three. The people who got the first four meals were finished eating by the time the last three were served. It shows that more cooks need to be hired. The wait staff need to be trained properly. In my younger days I was a server and was trained. The food was good but not a good amount on some items for the money charged. $$$ Some dinners were not very hot. Other customers arrived after us. They got their dinners and left before we got served. Now time for the check. My husband and I were charged for an extra drink. We waited another 10 minutes to have the check corrected. We were there from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. Not one of us were happy! We will not be returning! PS The restaurant was not real busy. read more

The food was ok but not what we expected. The staff that was there did the best they could. They are very understaffed. No bar staff at all and no spa staff. The ambiance was nice, very quite probably because we were one of 3 tables in the dinner area. Interesting antique everywhere and the entire place is loaded with history. Just ate there last night. NEVER GOING BACK. The quality of food was horrible for the price. I had the steak frites which was $30 and if you like Ingels quality steak with mystery sauce over it with cold fries then you'd be happy. My wife had the Halibut which was the fish of the day. $35 for a slice of dry fish about the size of two fish sticks with a small pile of leeks and 3 slices of squash? She was still hungry. My daughter who is a teen had the Caesar salad with shrimp added. Almost every piece of lettuce was a core piece with 6 shrimp for $20. My other daughter had Mac and cheese which came in the tiniest ramekin and she said a box of Kraft Mac N Cheese woulda been better. She's a bread lover so we did order the $8 bread (which usually is complimentary at better restaurants) so I was kinda expecting something better? Nope, two large dinner rolls to split between the 4 of us. I tried to give them another try, VERY DISAPPOINTED. If I was the Executive Chef, I'd source better food for this price and be pretty embarrassed to serve what my family ate last night for a $150 dinner. read more

We had dinner from the Veranda Restaurant last night and found it delicious. We started with shrimp cocktail which was great! Then my husband had the filet with loaded baked potato & salad & said it was one of the best filets he has ever had - tender & no fat with excellent flavor. I had the salmon with baked potato and salad. I love ginger, so the sauce on the salmon was spot on. Today we had the Sunday brunch at the Veranda and it was fantastic. We had dinner on a Thursday night and were one of three tables in the entire restaurant. Granted, one was a large, loud party of 12. We ordered filet mignon, which came out burned. Their replacements were better, but more rare than we wanted on the inside (asked for medium-got a cool red center). Service was inattentive-drink refills lacking. $20 brunch buffet is right!!! This buffet is in an ornate dining room with a veranda overlooking a pool and gorgeous mountain and lake views. Top-notch waitstaff and service, but it really shines on the food! It features hand-carved prime rib and dijon crusted pork, an array of local breakfast favorites, and expertly seasoned sides for lunch. Somehow they even made green beans and parsleyed potatoes outstanding! The salad bar included common items such as pasta salad, tomato cucumber salad, garden and ceasar, as well as cheese and crackers, and soup. Made-to-order omelettes were also available. The dessert area also had me impressed, with homemade pastries such as chess pie, blueberry cobbler with ice cream, and strawberry shortcake. There was even a chocolate fountain with fruit and cakes for dipping. There was even "lake lure punch", an effervescent and light citrus punch. In short: delicious! read more

Its a great place to meet up for brunch if you have friends and family staying here for a wedding. Its beautiful. Other than that, you need to be really hungry to get your $18.95 worth. And service was lackluster. There are carving stations, and huge buffet, and there is a made to order omelet station. Everything was good, but nothing that really struck me as amazing. It took me quite some time to get my drinks. The manager was running around working his butt off, but none of the rest of the staff seemed to be energetic, nor personable. It is what it is. Everything was just "meh". I wanted to like the soup of the day, which was a butternut bisque, but it was so peppery, it was hard to eat. The steak was tasteless and had no glaze or anything, just an au jus, which was also tasteless. Potatoes were okay and veggies were okay. We've eaten at this restaurant several times over the years. The "stand out" for us is the Sunday brunch! An outstanding array of foods, hand carved prime rib, pork tenderloin, made to order omelets with ingredients you select and give to the chef. Chocolate fountain and many other desserts. You won't leave hungry or disappointed. Also had an 50th wedding anniversary for my folks here about 23 years ago. The help we received from the staff was extraordinary, as we live 900 miles away. The Veranda Restaurant is attached to the Lake Lure Inn. I went here for brunch with my family and the cost for the buffet is under $20 I believe. The assortment of food is extensive and the dessert buffet is beautiful (and tasty). Almost all of the desserts are made on site (except the cheesecake). The chocolate chess pie is quite good. The omelets are also well done. The dining room is absolutely beautiful and transports you back to the 1920s. The chairs and heavy duty wood and look like they will last hundreds of years (it's quite novel to see real furniture in restaurants these days). I was there too early for the bloody mary bar but that starts at noon. The weather wasn't quite warm enough in April, but there is an outside patio where you can dine overlooking the pool and the lake - gorgeous view. And most importantly, your server should be able to tell you all the details about the parts of Dirty Dancing that were filmed in Lake Lure. read more

We ate dinner here a few nights ago and I was sad to see it was nearly empty. The hotel is a beautiful example of days gone by. I love these types of places. Yes, it could use some updating, but I can look past that. Our servers were friendly, professional and personable. Yelp says it's not child friendly, but we brought along our 3.5 year old, 9 year old and 10 year old daughters and they all loved it. I had the chicken cordon bleu (excellent) and the rest of our adult party had the three course meal deals (only $20.00). My wife had the trout and the rest had the steak. They all loved their meals. Would go here again in a heart beat. This place deserves to be busy and preserved. My life LOVED that Dirty Dancing was filmed here. read more

I'm only giving 2 stars because they tried to pass off Atlantic salmon as "Wild Caught Alaskan Salmon". Im very familiar with all varieties of Alaskan salmon and only one of them is white, but this wasn't it. Took one bite and returned it for a filet mignon which was pretty good. I actually think the "cook" (intentionally not using the word chef) probably doesn't know the difference since no explanation or comps were offered. Anyway the atmosphere is fabulous and the food is ok. Good appetizers, sides, good service, and good prices but I mainly went there because I'm an Alaskan Salmon fanatic. read more

Spent a beautiful weekend at Lake Lure this weekend. We had Saturday morning breakfast and Saturday night dinner at this restaurant mainly due to convenience. This restaurant gets three stars for the value for what you get. Prices are very affordable, so can't really expect gourmet food. With that said, I'd rather see a true chef take over and get the food quality higher and pay a little more. We skipped brunch as was originally planned based on the quality of our other meals and went into Asheville for brunch and walking around instead. This is a hotel that does tons of weddings, and that is the type of food you get in the restaurant. An adequate meal, but nothing exciting or memorable. Breakfast: Breakfast was 5 bucks, including a drink. You can't even eat at McDonalds for that, so we didn't have high expectations. What was decent: bacon, French toast, fruit. (Hubby had a biscuit and gravy and said gravy was pretty good as well). what wasn't: eggs, frittata, grits (horrible, no clue who made these, but they were dry gloopy saw dust testing mess). Eggs are impossible to serve to a large mass and understandable. Frittata was probably ok originally, but got over cooked sitting in warmer. Staff was great. Wedding party also eating at same time, but staff was attentive, welcoming and fast. a+ for them for sure. We'd eat here again for the 5 dollar breakfast. Dinner: first I must say there is an excellent manager present busting his butt to make sure everything is going well. Very impressed by him and his involvement in all aspects of the dinner and hotel. We decided to go with the 18 dollar meal after realizing we were probably going to have a somewhat unexciting meal. For the value, 18 bucks for what we got is a steal. We also shared a bottle of wine that was very nice. The "fresh baked bread" left a lot to be desired. Think three different kinds of cold rolls that weren't even as good as the frozen bread we can get at the grocery store. This is something that can be easily fixed, and should be. We each got a salad to start that was great with house-made dressing. For our main course I got trout that was surprisingly good and husband got a 7 ounce sirloin that was thick and properly prepared. Hubby said it was decent. Served with green beans that were pretty good, but also the most disgusting garlic mashed potatoes I have ever had. They were completely cold and hard. I can't imagine who in the kitchen thought they were ok to serve. Perhaps they were made for the wedding and just later slapped on our plate. Everyone at that time was busy with the wedding departing, so we just let it go. Dessert was also included and it was a pretty basic chocolate cake. Not bad, not anything exciting. We wouldn't go out of our way to eat here again, but if we were there and wanted an affordable dinner I guess we would give it another try. read more

So excited to spend my birthday evening at a historic inn's restaurant- rarely have I been so disappointed. The bread tasted like warmed over old ciabatta from Costco. The artichoke dip was like paste. The corn chips were good. The cherry cobbler with ice cream was fine. The biggest problem was that my lamb was over cooked- not a big deal- just a rush redirected right? Nope. Instead I'm told that I should choose something I like a little less so that it won't take an hour for me to get my entree. The chef has asked her to tell me this and explain that there's a 75 person order headed out. As someone who has worked front and back of house, including a stint as a very informal assistant chef, I am flabbergasted. They have 4 tables of a total of 10 people now seated with two having just arrived- Does this mean those folks will wait an hour? Nope- business as usual. Meanwhile, the one thing I wanted on their sparse menu, lollipop chops- will take an hour. Or maybe it takes an hour to over cook broccoli to just this side of pudding? Or to let a baked potato come out of the oven and sweat itself old? I'm not sure, but my dinner was priced at almost 30 dollars- that's a lot for 70s food. Avoid until they get a better kitchen staff. The ambiance is wonderful and hoping they'll work on food to match. The waiter tried to make amends and deserves kudos for working there- likely this won't be the last mess he tries to clean up. read more

I'm shocked by the high overall rating. True that the prices are reasonable, but despite the cloth table cloths, you're getting what you pay for. I ordered trout with green beans and rice. The trout was bland and somewhat fishy tasting. Definitely frozen for a while. The rice was very bland and reheated. The beans were the only saving grace. They were fresh & crispy. My wife ordered a salad with blackened salmon. Again, the salmon was not close to being fresh and was overcooked. For dessert , peach creme brulee. I'd recommend skipping straight to dessert and calling it a night. Overall, come for the setting, not for the food. read more
