We've lived in Flat Rock for almost 10 years, and somehow this was our first time trying Highland Lake Inn & Resort. Honestly, I think I had it completely wrong in my head--I always assumed it was more of a "pretentious" spot, and that couldn't have been further from the truth. Since we live right down the road, we finally decided to stop in and give it a try--and I'm so glad we did. It's spring right now, and the walk up was absolutely beautiful. The azaleas were in full bloom and completely lining the entrance, which made for such a welcoming first impression. Inside, it felt cozy and relaxed, with a lot of fun, interesting artwork throughout. It immediately felt more approachable than I expected. Our server was the sweetest--true Southern hospitality. I wish I could remember her name because she really added to the experience. We started with Japanese whiskey and ended up chatting with the table next to us, who told us they make a point to come here every time they're in town--which says a lot. When we ordered, I was honestly surprised by how reasonable the prices were for this area. We split the Ribeye Gaucho and the Monte Cristo, and both were delicious. Overall, it was such a pleasant surprise from start to finish. Definitely a place we'll be coming back to. read more

Expected more from a prix fix Thanksgiving dinner. Our experience was mixed from start to finish, with several things being terrific but several things being a disappointment. Starting with the tables, which were reminiscent of diner tables (no table cloth, plastic placemats) the feel was not "high end" at all. The appetizers were generally terrific (shrimp, smoked salmon, salad, soup). The entrees were mixed, with the cornerstone turkey in a huge skillet drenched in uninteresting gravy. No choices for uncovered meat, dark meat, etc. Sausages (breakfast style) were terrible, but the prime rib carving station was great. The ham was boring, and the desserts were fair-to-middling, with store-bought cookies and completely dry chocolate cake and carrot cake. The pecan pie was good, but they didn't have any whipped cream (although a kind waiter found some out back). The danish was literally the exact copies we had elsewhere for breakfast. Very odd. At the end of the meal, our waiter same to the table and announced in a loud voice "here's the check for $xxx" - literally announced the total to all our guests. I was embarrassed for them. I'd recommend this place only for regular meals and not for special occasions. For the price point asked, I would have expected homemade desserts, more consistency, less of an industrial "move them through" restaurant feel and more of an intimate feel. read more

My wife and I made our annually trek to Highland's Resort. Beautiful eclectic place. Our night started at Season's. Toby mixed up some delicious cocktails. Very cool Guy. We shared the mushroom risotto, cauliflower gratin (OMG Good), and I had the pan seared rainbow trout over sweet potatoes and spinach. Cooked to perfection!! We topped off with Pecan pie and pecan ice cream. We had a bottle of Conundrum wine - very good and after dinner drinks. Ms Bethany provided Five Star Service at our table. We had my father's celebration of life in a private room at Season's. We had dined there many times over the years and had good experiences. But this time was different. At over $100 per person for Hors d'oeuvres which were to be served by their staff passing them, I expected the food to at least be delicious and fresh and passed throughout the first hour of the event. Instead they sent the folks through with stale prepared food and all with in the first 15 minutes totally overwhelming us so we couldn't even enjoy talking to each other. And in my follow up with them, they seemed to think this was ok. Extremely disappointed and will not be using them ever again for an event. read more

Been wanting to go there for a while. so finally on birthday, we went. The place is really neat up the drive. We waited for awhile to get service. Bread came late. I want to say it was bc of shortage of staff, but a larger group of 5 or 6 came after us and they got service pretty quick. so... yeah. The food I think is overpriced. It wasn't as tasty as I thought it would be. I was a little underwhelmed!! I don't mind paying high for good food but what I had that night wasn't worth $46 - seafood risotto. The rice was very sour, too much lemon!!! and the shrimps were no better than what you could get at a local dive chinese food place. saving grace was crime brûlée. it was good!! read more

We came here for a Christmas Eve Eve dinner and it was pretty yummy! We started with a couple appetizers: bread, beet & burrata salad, butternut squash raviolis, and their fritto misto. The focaccia bread and burrata salad which came with an arugula salad were my favorites. The raviolis were also delicious!! We split a bottle of cab and my cousin had their margarita special which was good too. I had the beef tenderloin for my main which came with some potatoes and blackened garlic butter. Their risotto had a strong saffron taste (not for me) and the sweet potato croquettes which came with the rib eye were delicious!! read more

I had a quick breakfast before the drive home and had a wonderful experience @ Season's. I must say that they, as other local businesses, take the mask requirements seriously and had the tables and buffet distanced for safety. The setting is an upscale cottage rental complex and was very quaint. The staff were very friendly and had smiles beneath their masks! The food was excellent! I went the brunch route and had baked chicken (with gravy) and rice. The roast beef was NY strip and perfect with horseradish sauce. I wish I could have eaten another plate, as the one plate for $25 (senior discount) was all I could handle before a 5 hour drive. They don't serve dinner hours, so make your plans for before 2. The menu changes, the specials change but the excellence and outstanding service remains the same even 20 years later. There is always something unique to be found whenever you visit and there are some "old stand-bys" that you can always count on. On our last visit we ordered a variety of appetizers and "shared the bounty" and it was plenty for the four of us. The server was accommodating, gladly bringing individual plates for us and answering questions. After our order was placed the chef sent out an "amuse bouche" and it was delicious--a smoked salmon pate with sprouts garnee. My dinner companions had never been to Seasons before but they are committed to coming back as soon as possible. And the favorite dish of the evening? The small crisp fried oysters! We stayed at Highland Lake Resort and it was like stepping back in time. The eatery on property is GOLDEN. Service is amazing, the food is Absolutely delicious. Of all the meals we had there, none were bad, every single one of them, from the Big Birthday Dinner we had that arrival night to the breakfast buffets we had while we stayed, every last one was memorable and delicious. When we were there, the world was just beginning to shut down due to Covid-19, apparently some of their reservations didn't show, but they were cooking as though they were still expected, so the breakfast buffets were absolutely lavish. The omlettes were lavish and the breads and baked goods were decadent. At dinner time, the meats were succulent. We NEVER had a bad review while we stayed on property. We came here on Wednesday evening after making reservations and we were seated right away. The restaurant is in a very cozy location with nice landscaping views from the dining windows. It is part of an inn and resort. The staff was very attentive and accommodating. I ordered the crab salad as an appetizer and it was full of freshness and flavor. The avocado mousse was fluffy with a lemon flavor to it and the salad greens had just enough dressing with a nice variety of fresh garnishes. The salmon was done to perfection and didn't taste fishy. The corn custard was so creamy and the presentation of the meal was excellent. Then came my birthday dessert: I chose the gluten-free chocolate flourless torte with bourbon raspberry sauce. It was so creamy and delicious! All of the flavors from the dishes just seemed to blend so well: one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Another stellar experience for dinner! Strict COVID protocols with masks required. I had a delicious beet and burrata salad followed by scallops and mussels on a bed of kale and grits. My husband had the house salad with a creamy dill dressing, then melt in your mouth beef tenderloin cooked perfectly with au gratin potatoes and haricots vert. Came here for a New Year's Eve lunch. First, Clearly it's time for an interior update. It's gloomy and dated and feels like an assisted living dining room. I am assuming lunch is not their forte so will give 3 stars. For trying. Our window view looked out onto broken dirty lattice work on an ac unit. As other people have said the bread " service" is a joke for 4$ Per Person. I had literally 2 prices of old French bread. Tasted like it had been heated in the microwave. No excuse at all. I had the quiche which came with a good cold salad with good dressing. The quiche was tasty and hot but the cut edges were hard as if had been precut and held in a warmer. I wanted soup but the two offerings were both creamed.... a big no on a good menu. I really wanted to like this place as I read so many good reviews. The manager needs to understand that the bread thing alone is inexcusable. It starts off any meal poorly. So disappointing. read more

The creativity in the kitchen must be something special to witness based on what is brought to the table. I first experienced Seasons Restaurant for breakfast while staying in a cabin on the Highland Lake grounds. The morning buffet was very tasty which compelled me to try dinner. If you're in the area, here's what you need to know. Season's is, hands down, the best restaurant in town. If you like excellent food, great service, and a sensational atmosphere, this is the place. Recently, we were invited to come experience what Season's is really about. Upon arrival, we were greeted promptly and with hospitality as we were shown to our lovely patio table. It was a bit cool out so the heaters were on for comfort. (The indoor dining rooms were lovely as well, with guests spaced reasonably apart.) As quickly as we were seated, we were greeted again, given water and told that our waiter; Chris would be with us shortly. Yep! Chris was there in the blink of an eye! We went through the wine list and menu, our questions were answered, recommendations made and ordered very smoothly. As quickly as Chris took our orders and departed, Mr. Fassbender; the Director of Food and Beverage, appeared with a flute of champagne for each of us! (We were celebrating a birthday and belated Mother's Day.) We all spoke for a few highly enjoyable minutes. Peter was very genuine and wanted to give us the special dinner we had planned. What a fine gentleman and astute businessman! Mom ordered the chef's special rib eye and scallops (oh my goodness, to die for yummy!), sister ordered the rib eye with smashed fingerling potatoes, and I had the pan seared duck with figs and greens. It was ALL SERVED SO BEAUTIFULLY and was mouth watering SCRUMPTIOUS! Dessert was so DELICIOUS! Mom had tiramisu (man, it looked tasty!), I had the best creme brûlée ever (and it was a generous portion too), and sister was given a lovely key lime tart. In my estimation, (and we all agreed), Seasons is the finest restaurant in the area. Go there for an intimate, special occasion, or for the very delicious food (dishes most of us will never get elsewhere), or for impeccable service and a lovely atmosphere. I am old enough to believe science and too young to want to die. I watch what I can see while in eateries and sometimes have to vote with my feet. We loved the outdoor ambiance at night as you approached the entrance, and the staff were so personable. Great menu with enough of a selection for a group, and everything we ordered was fantastic! We had an absolute blast having dinner (and the wonderful buffet breakfast included with a stay at the Highland Lake Inn) at Season's for my mom's birthday. We have been coming to the Highland Lake Inn for more than 25 years for mountain getaways, and it is always a special time. Season's has a fantastic wine selection (and they're recipients of the 2022 Wine Spectator award), a delicious selection of entrees (we tried the peppercorn-cognac tenderloin and the lobster ravioli - both delicious) and a yummy assortment of different desserts (we tried 3 different desserts!). We dined at Season's on September 22nd, 2019 as well as Andrew D. who had an unfortunate salmon incident. We were, in fact, seated at a table adjacent to Andrew's table of four. My husband had his back to the table, but I had a bird's eye view. We had an incredibly pleasant evening, and our food came out perfectly prepared. I had the grouper dish, and my husband had the beef tenderloin. We tried the broccoli bisque, which was heaven in a bowl, and ended our meal with perfectly poured martinis. Our server was polite, prompt, and inobtrusive: exactly what one would hope for when going out for a romantic meal. Andrew's table, loudly complained about their server being slow, and their food being prepared poorly. We listened intently, because people-watching is always fun. The server apologized profusely and said he would have the salmon prepared again. The patron, Andrew, did refuse the salmon but the server said that he would be happy to replace the fish with a more properly cooked portion. After the server left, the table made rude comments about his listening skills. When he returned with the fish it was about ten minutes later. The group was still chatting and eating, although their plates were about 50% gone they were, by no means finished with their meal. Andrew told the waiter he didn't want the fish and that he was disturbing their meal. Befuddled, the server went to get his manager, because he couldn't understand why the diner did not want the plate of newly prepared food. This is when we started to pay closer attention to the table because he (Andrew) began complaining more loudly and making jokes at the server's expense. My husband and I could no longer engage in conversation ourselves​ because Andrew and his guests were so distractingly loud. The manager returned shortly, with fish in hand and said something along the lines of "Friend, I hear you've decided you do not want this fish." The patron proceeded to get more and more agitated and also aggressive with the manager. The manager offered to have the fish wrapped to go, and also to remove the offending meal from the bill. At which point, Andrew began to wildly gesture and raise his voice, disturbing not only my husband and me but other guests as well. This is when the manager said, "I'm sorry you are displeased with the food, but at this point, I'm going to retrieve your bill and I have to ask you to leave because you're becoming quite aggressive." I was impressed with both the manager's decorum and his level head during the altercation. The customer proceeded to say "Are we really going to do this right now?" and something about not leaving. This is when the manager informed him that he had the right to refuse service to anyone and because they were disrupting the experience of other diners it was time for them to go. They paid their bill and left all while exclaiming that they would "tell all their friends" and making other vague threats about their retaliation for being removed from the restaurant. We were pleased when they left and able to relax back into enjoying our meal once they exited. The manager quickly came over to apologize for the spectacle and he spoke to all the tables in that area of the restaurant to ensure we were still having a good evening. As I am sure you know, someone who has a bad experience with a restaurant will tell 50 people, while someone who has a good experience might tell one. I wanted to counteract their retaliation and also clear the air surrounding any conceived misconduct by the management or waitstaff. I believe they handled the situation completely professionally. Okay, when you're looking for fine dining in the Hendersonville, Flat Rock area this is the place to go. Don't forget to make a reservation; and I always feel I need to dress up just a little. You see very casual people there all the time but it's a very classy place with great service and a wonderful menu executed by a marvelous chef. Dinner is pricey but worth every penny with a superb wine list. Lunch is more casual but also an event when it comes to the food. If I'm looking to impress someone on a special occasion this is the place I will take them. I've been here numerous times and I've never been disappointed. From soup and salad thought the entrees and on to dessert it's a tip top experience. My only complaint is that the greeters are sometimes a little frosty but once the wait staff arrives you're usually treated like family. read more

Visiting the area and decided to splurge a bit with a nice dinner. We won't disappointed! From the beautiful walk up to the restaurant to the dessert we loved everything. They had a very decent wine list and I loved how the menu was local and fresh ingredients. I had the pork belly and scallops which melted in my mouth and my husband had the NC rainbow trout. We've eaten here several times and always been very satisfied. This week, four of us had a special celebration dinner, and this was our go to place. Started with the cheese board appetizer, which was awesome! Two of us had the beef short ribs,one the pork tenderloin, and one the duck leg. All were very well prepared, and good to the last bite! Meat was so tender. Sides were perfect. The server, ,Jay, was great. Very personable, and seemed to always anticipate when we needed something, without being intrusive.
