We've been coming to this location for years although it has gone through a number of ownership and name changes. The location is a few hundred yards from the Lake Lure Dam which would normally provide a gorgeous view of the lake, unfortunately like the lake it appears the restaurants in the area are still recovering from the impact from Hurricane Helene. We made a reservation for nine and were seated immediately upon arriving, the restaurant decor hasn't changed much over the years and like all our other visits the staff here has been gracious and very accommodating. Like one would expect the menu has undergone lots of changes so we were all excited to try something new. Although this restaurant was mostly empty it seemed the kitchen struggled to get the food out and was kinda disappointing when it arrived, it's apparent the kitchen staff isn't nearly at the level it once was so we all attributed the food quality to the struggles all the restaurants seem to be having during the areas continued recovery. We ordered a variety of dishes and all seemed to be very bland and flavorless. the portions were fine as were the prices but nothing here was memorable to anyone in our group - I ordered steamed mussels which was served luke warm and lacked any broth for dipping the toast and probably a quarter of the mussels weren't open so I discarded those, we also order the shrimp scampi pasta and it was just as disappointing no flavor. The beer was cold and the cocktails were crafted with generous pours and having dinner with friends who also traveled here was amazing - we all knew this years experience would be different but we definitely wanted to support the area restaurants. Went here to eat around 6pm on a Friday night. Our party of 5 was the only table sat in the entire place, which should have been a warning. Waitress greats us, promptly informs us they are out of fries and kettle chips were the replacement. Also out of pasta (yes, pasta) - so shrimp scampi on the menu would be just... a plate of shrimp? Our orders included a burger, two chicken sandwiches, a BLT and chicken tenders. The menu only has tenders under the kids section, but we were told there was an "adult" button on the ordering system so they could do that. Why not just have it on the menu? Anyways, AFTER the orders were taken and relayed to the kitchen the waitress came back and informed us they don't actually have chicken tenders - it's chicken nuggets. Apparently they saw no problem with this because "chicken is chicken"?! Kinda like ordering a steak and getting a burger? Beef is beef right? Meals came out and the burger and chicken sandwiches were just ok. Bacon on the BLT and on the chicken sandwiches looked to be straight of the microwave, but can't confirm that.... But the chicken nuggets? Seriously this place should be ashamed to put this on a plate and serve it. Obviously frozen straight from a bag and should only be served to a toddler, and that's a stretch. Maybe this place is better during the busier season... but my vote is try somewhere else because today was a disappointment in every way. read more

Very disappointed...we had heard good things about Canoe, but our experience was the opposite. First, it's pricey for what you get. Beers are $8 or more for microbrew brands, and the selection is sparce. Or at least, it was the evening we went as they did not have our first two selections. The server said they had a busy weekend and hadn't restocked...bear in mind we were there on a Thursday. I ordered the shrimp tacos...$16 for two tacos with 3 shrimp on each. The shrimp were overdone and like rubber. My wife ordered the vegetarian pizza. When asked what veggies came on it, the server said mushrooms and zucchini...that's all. My wife isn't fond of zucchini, so we paid $21 for a mushroom pizza that was mediocre. Total bill was $50 for two entrees and one beer(I passed on having one when they said they were out of my second choice). At least the views of the lake and mountains were good! read more

Lucky enough to get a table for 8 without a reservation on a seemingly busy beginning of a holiday weekend. Ordering was a challenge with the waitress very unfamiliar with the menu as well as speaking little to no English. We were asked to finish up our dinners or order desserts as they wanted to split the tables into separate tables. Those that ordered smash burgers they said were great. The menu is somewhat limited and this time around they ran out of burgers. A bit understandable given the inconsistency of business. This little restaurant and bar is on the way into the town of Lake Lure. . Most things around here are a little high in prices just for a burger or chicken sandwich so I went for something different with the fried plantains with avocado and cherry tomatoes. It was delicious! Very cute interior with table games for you to play to help pass time. this review is based solely on the food. I cant give this place anymore chances. I ordered blackened shrimp tacos. the shrimp had ZERO seasoning not even salt or pepper but it wouldnt have mattered the shrimp were not even edible. the driest and most rubbery shrimp I have ever eaten. you can tell they buy already cooked frozen shrimp then they over cook them on top of that. 3 small unseasoned rubber shrimp on each taco with NOTHING else on the plate for $19. wow! that is 100% unacceptable anywhere. high end restaurants do not even charge that. the same exact lunch at highlands reserve had 4 well seasoned shrimp on each taco that was loaded and that included chips and homemade salsa with a great presentation for the EXACT same price. photo on the right is obviously the canoe and photo on the left is highlands. the canoe should be ashamed and it is very disappointing this is a great looking restaurant with great views but someone has zero clue how to run a restaurant or how to cook. i wish them the best of luck! read more

My wife I thought this place sounded nice but we soon found out the over priced food was nothing bit frozen warmed up. The "Smash Burger" is anything but. They tell you 8oz on the menu well done but in actuality it is 2 frozen 4oz patties cooked well done. They pushed drinks as soon as we walked in and we don't drink. We had lunch at Canoe Kitchen and Bar today with our young children and left feeling quite sad about the experience. Our kids were excited to see the standing connect-four board and chess set, so they walked over from the sofa area to take a look. Our server spoke directly to them in a rather sharp tone, first telling them not to put their shoes on the furniture, and then again not to knock the pieces onto the floor, even though I was standing right beside them and responded immediately each time. She later told me that this was a 21+ area, but there was no sign or indication of that, and the games naturally attracted the kids. As parents, we completely understand that restaurants have rules and that staff can be busy, and we are always willing to cooperate. What felt hurtful was the way it was communicated to our children instead of to us as their parents. A kind explanation and clear signage would have made a huge difference. read more

This was our first visit to Canoe as we were visiting Lake Lure. I can't recommend this place. Our party wanted Diet Coke but they said they ran out. I ordered a mojito. It was not a mojito. There was no mint and no lime. I feel like they tried to flavor it with peppermint. It was not good. I ordered the super burger, which isn't supposed to have pickles. My wife even said to make sure it doesn't have pickles. Sure enough, it came out with pickles. The server asked me to just take them off, the kitchen was very busy. I told her I didn't want the burger if that was the case. I despise pickles and pickle juice. When I walked through the inside basically every table had their food. So why was the kitchen so busy? Sounded like an excuse. She did ask me to allow her to make it right. So I did. To their benefit, it did come back and I didn't taste any pickles. That's why I'm giving 2 stars and not just one. Delightfully surprised by a guest chef menu of Peruvian dishes. Seafood rice dish was decadent. Lomo Saltado, a classic steak dish served with rice and potato fries came out with a generous serving of lean, medium rare cutlets, one of the more elevated preparations of this particular dish that we have had. Lastly the seafood chowder was a flavorful and complex stew with crawfish, flounder, and potatoes. Chef Amaru is a big personality who brings to Lake Lure a new and exciting alternative to the usual pasta, burger and pizza menus. It's casual but the menu is expensive like a higher end restaurant. $36 for an 8 oz sirloin? At the store a sirloin is $9/lb grocery store price. So, thats $4.50 for 8 oz. 3x mark up for it being at a restaurant...$13.50. 8x mark up for a piece of leather. Also, the website advertised brunch. And...no brunch. I really wanted to try the chicken and waffles. I got the black jack sandwich. The fries had no salt. I don't mean very little. None. They were also soggy and floppy. The sandwich was bland. Even with the sauce. The turkey had no flavor. Turkey is like chicken. Bland. It needs help. The price was reasonable. I expected more. I've read previous reviews. I'm sure the owner is going to have some snarky comment about how everything is fantastic. Here's the best review tip I can give you...pay attention to the reviews. Not everyone is going to give you 5 stars. People will tell you everything is good and never come back. I love supporting small business. Especially, in Lake Lure. I won't be back. We visited Canoe Kitchen and Bar over the weekend for the second time. I have to say it was as good if not better than our first time. The food was amazing and the service was excellent. We were met upon arrival by a very pleasant host and seated near a window over looking the beautiful lake. Our server was kind and polite and never allowed our drinks to bottom out. We had the opportunity to try out Canoe while staying in Lake Lure for the Christmas holiday. The interior is cozy and inviting, loved how it was decorated for the holidays. We opted to sit at the bar and are glad we did as Heidi was wonderful. For lunch my husband and I split a crab cake and the canoe burger. Both were great, the burger was flavorful and juicy without being messy. Heidi served great beverages and provided wonderful service. We tried several of their cocktails: Blackberry Old Fashioned (perfect for me, as it was a tad sweeter than a regular old fashioned which is how I like mine), regular Old Fashioned (perfect for my husband who likes a more liquor forward drink) and a Spicy Paloma (I liked that the spice wasn't overpowering and just had a brief spice kick that didn't take over). Prices are crazy! Menu is limited. Wanted to see what they had before going, but nothing posted. Ended up trying to support a new local business. Employee was sitting up front eating a good looking pasta dish. Got sat, looked at the menus. 4 dinners with two being "angus burger" and no pasta dish to be seen. Burgers were $22 each. Ok, maybe they're amazing but still, $22?!?!? My family got them as the other dishes didn't sound appealing. It arrived and it looked like the Costco angus burger patty put on a decent bun with some sauce and a handful of store bought potato chips. NOT $22 worth. That, an appetizer and some waters and it was a $100 dinner for four people and two of us were still hungry. This place was only open for 3 days and we are already in love with this place. Awesome atmosphere friendly staff/owners, and the food was incredible. The burger is the best In town, my wife had the beef tenderloin and she loved it. We visit lake lure 5 times a year and it's nice to have a new place with great food in the area.
