We came to Village Bakery & Cafe for their Father's Day prix-fixe brunch and had a really nice time overall. The prix-fixe menu was a great deal and included a muffin, appetizer, entrée, and dessert. We also had a Bloody Mary and some Brut Rosé, and both were good. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and well prepared. The restaurant was packed for Father's Day, with lots of families celebrating, which made for a fun atmosphere. We also loved the bar area, and after brunch we stopped by the bakery next door to pick up a few treats to take home. The only reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is that the meal felt a little rushed. We were in and out in about an hour, including drinks and dessert. Our appetizer arrived almost immediately after the muffins were dropped off, before we'd really had a chance to enjoy them. Throughout the meal, empty plates tended to sit on the table longer than expected, and courses came out very quickly one after another. That said, everyone was friendly, and the manager was especially kind and attentive. I'm sure they were doing their best to keep things moving. We'd definitely come back, but probably on a less busy day so we can relax a bit more, enjoy the patio, and take our time. this was my husband's favorite local restaurant for dinner but tonight was a disappointment. The service was great (refilled our water) but the food was what disappointed the parker house rolls were good the salmon with chard had a weird sour sauce to it. never a fan of chard, so that didn't help, carrots were unremarkable the side of honey glazed carrots were undercooked, crunchy the shrimp pasta with saffron was oily the margherita pizza was disappointing, not Italian, not as good as the home mobile oven my husband's boss has =( the chicken paillard was ok. weird vegetables again dessert was good though they were out of devil's food which they should've warned us when they gave us the dessert menu =( ambiance was elegant, quirky art. love the white paper on table so we could draw. read more

This is one of the few brunch spots in the bay that also serves good espresso! I visited on a whim for brunch on a Saturday afternoon, and despite not having a reservation, I was seated with my husband in a few minutes. Staff were friendly and the dishes were high quality. The outdoor patio is perfect - shaded but bright. My almond croissant was wonderfully crunchy but moist, and my iced latte was delicious. My husband's chicken and waffle was tasty also. GOOD LUCK FINDING PARKING. Came here for the viral giant marshmallow from TikTok. Ordered a hot chocolate to go with it, as well as a ham and cheese croissant. The hot chocolate was not good. It tasted extremely watered down and the marshmallow was just that--a giant marshmallow that wasn't anything special because of the terrible hot chocolate. I didn't finish it. The ham and cheese croissant had close to no cheese inside and just one piece of thicker cut ham. I liked the ham but my cheese? Nowhere to be found! The croissant itself was buttery and flaky in the best way, but I was surprised to find that the cheese inside was just a tiny piece, hardened to the point that no amount of reheating could revive it. Not to mention their ordering system between food and drinks is completely unorganized. Stopped by for a quick Americano and desert. Unfortunately the experience was just okay. The service was a bit slow even for a simple order. The main issue was the quality of the baker items, the first cookey they tried to give me literally fell apart before it reached my hands. However, we asked for our coffee drinks not to be too sweet. They were not only sickening sweet, but they weren't even hot. We love the Village Pub and were excited to try the Bakery. Unfortunately we were left disappointed by the food and service. Stracciatella do Buffalo Toast ($21): fantastic appetizer. Nicely prepared kale and fresh toasted bread. This was the best dish we tried. Rock Shrimp Linguine ($45): shrimp was cooked well, but the sauce was under seasoned and we couldn't taste the saffron at all. Disappointing for the price. Five-Layer Lasagna Bolognese ($30): good, but not great. Layers were a bit light on meat and the bolognese was bland. It was served on top of what seemed to be a pizza-style tomato sauce. Skillet Brownie ($14): great! We had a few odd interactions with the staff. When ordering the appetizer to share our waiter told us we "look like good eaters" and should order the soup as well. We passed since we were planning on dessert. Later, as our mains were being delivered, a waiter completely unrelated to our table came up and began telling a story about how monks lived longer in the old days because they drank beer instead of water. For example, I've been to Village Bakery in person many times and fell in love with their large, fluffy cinnamon rolls with heaps of frosting. Trying to get dessert menus, order more drinks, etc, was incredibly painful. Had to ask multiple times for one of our drinks. I love the ambiance here and food is also good. However the service is hit or miss. Hostess is always great. But the wait staff -- it feels like they rush you both during and at end of meal, make mistakes and forget things, and I don't feel they come across polished enough to be commensurate with the high-end ambiance and prices here. They also start cleaning things up before you're even done, in a rather rushed manner. So it doesn't feel like a nice, relaxed meal. By contrast the service at Village Pub is excellent/top-notch and also Buck's next door has great service. I just would expect a little more high-end service based on everything else here. Party of 7 here on Sunday, 8/10 for brunch. We sat in the outdoor courtyard with plenty of shade. The ambiance here is lovely. As per our usual agreement, Hubs ordered treats before main entrees. We all shared a yummy cinnamon roll and coffee cake. The young man that was our server did a fantastic job with the pace of the meal; he was beyond friendly and seemed to enjoy being there. After a lovely morning walk at Filoli, we had brunch here with the girls with 2:30 pm reservations. We were seated by the host immediately. However, it took the waiter 20 minutes to greet us and pour us water - yes, 20 minutes. This was weird because they had lots of staff walking around who passed by us several times. Other than no one greeting us or offering water until almost 30 minutes, service seemed great and the food was delicious. Our favorite was the James Beard pancake - it wasn't sweet, dense, didn't even need syrup, with the tiniest taste of lemon - perfection. I could've just had that with a cup of latte. I had the chilaquiles, and they were the best I've ever had--perfectly cooked, not soggy or dry, with perfectly poached eggs. The pancake was out of this world, and the French fries were served in a charming little cornet, just like in France. The presentation of every dish was spot-on. The restaurant itself felt cozy, clean, and stylish. The only downside for me was a 5% fee added to our bill, described as a charge for "San Mateo County employer-mandated expenses." This is likely related to local labor laws requiring restaurants to contribute to programs like paid sick leave or other employee benefits, and some businesses pass that cost to customers. But, after an invited phone conversation with the extremely polite and professional manager, "Melyssa," I see things through a different lens. Great time here thanks to our server, Javier, as well as the two hostesses who accommodated us to be on the back patio. The back patio area is so cute it feels like Christmas time and the semi-enclosure keeps it warmer than the exposed front outdoor patio. Javier was great in explaining the specials for the day and helped guide us to the perfect choices. The heirloom tomato salad was a great start. The nice, meaty tomatoes and a delicious balsamic glaze drizzle on top worked beautifully against the creamy burrata. I love the ambiance of this place. The parking is a bit confusing. There's a lot in the front that was full, a parking attendant, you can talk to and then park. The front door has an alcove. Everyone seems to wait to be seated even with reservations. There's a formal dining area that you can see with white table cloths. There's a back area with more greenery, looks like an open covered roof, lots of windows and heaters. It's just a gorgeous relaxing looking place. If you are in a rush, this is not the place for you. We came for Sunday brunch, our waitress, took our order, brought our coffees, it did take a bit. We ordered the James Beard Pancakes. These were misnamed. These need the lemon butter and you have to add the slow cooked blueberries. Great to try and see what it is, but hmmm, not a favorite. I expected a delicious fluffy Japanese souffle pancake, but these are kind of dense, not fluffy, or pancake like. They do look delicious. We had the shakshouka, poached eggs, moroccan-spiced tomato sauce and toasted levain. The egg whites were too watery to us. They were super happy to cook it more for us. Sauce & eggs were much better then. Coffee was fine. The ambiance was great. Servers nice. Prices are up, but a place to snack on food, and relax with coffee is always nice. read more

We celebrated our son's birthday at The Village Bakery and they took great care of us. The staff had clearly read the notes in my reservation request. They had a great table for us and confirmed that someone in our party was having a birthday when we were seated. Our server deftly took the birthday candles that I'd brought and put them on the (decadent!) skillet brownie that our son ordered for his birthday dessert. He also gave my son a lovely birthday card from TVB. Those details made it a special occasion that we'll remember for a long time. For dinner we ordered many of our favorites and were not disappointed--the Bakery Burger, beet salad, and house-made hummus were particularly yummy.
