The inspector refused to pass inspection due to their work. Universal and Bruce stepped in and stepped up. They had to completely strip the bad roof, repair some rotted wood the other roofer denied we had (and just roofed over it), built the drainage we had but was removed, and did the job right. Then, when we took the shingles off, it was discovered that I needed a complete underlayment and skirt replacement that would add $50K! Of course, there were more magic discounts to knock another $20K off. Just give me the price. I was assured that they used their own teams who were certified with Owens Corning, only to find out that they actually use subcontractors who had no such training. A two-week job lingered for months. I kept getting harassed for final payment even though the work wasn't finished. Nobody ever did a final walkthrough with me to make sure I was happy with the work. There were also some employee issues. Someone urinated into a water bottle and left it in my attic. Universal promised me they had met with "their team" and fired the person responsible. What they didn't realize was that I had talked directly with the lead subcontractor, who told me that never happened and that he couldn't get any of his guys to admit to doing it. To his credit, he climbed into my attic and searched around to make sure there were no more "gifts." Nobody from Universal came out to address this or any of the other issues. Other than the initial salesperson, his "boss" who came out to tell me I needed a full roof replacement, and the assistant who came to collect my check, nobody from Universal was there before, during, or after construction. They seem to basically be a subcontractor management company: bid big, pay low, and make a profit by being the scheduler. The workers damaged a metal porch roof and my back deck. Nobody came out to assess the damage. They just knocked money off my bill and refused to actually fix anything. During the weeks it took to get everything cleaned up, I was repeatedly assured that the cleanup was complete. I finally brought a magnet home from work and picked up about five pounds of nails from around my yard. I have pictures, texts, and other documentation of all of this. I also looked into their history and found that they had low ratings going back to when they started in Glendale. The actual roofing work seems solid, but that appears to be much more a reflection of the subcontractor who did the work than Universal itself.

The big deal is that when I inspected their work after they left saying they were done it was nowhere near acceptable, never mind level 5. Surfaces weren't sanded, there was spilled mud on the trim and splatters on walls that they didn't clean up, the edges of their work were not sanded to blend into the existing surfaces. I was willing to accept less than level 5, but I wanted the work to be at least properly sanded and blended into the existing surfaces, which was not achieved. See pictures below of a few examples of what they left us with. They said they would fix it, and then abruptly said they couldn't do it and walked away from the job leaving us hanging. The one plus is they only took 50% of the payment , but after speaking to two other drywall guys who are quoting fixing their work even that seems like too much given how much we're going to have to redo and the resulting delays to our project.

Daniel has done amazing work on a…read morelarge remodel project with great precision, efficiency, attention to detail, and an obvious passion for his craft. White Eagle built several large four-way flared skylights, corrected tricky framing errors to prepare for sheetrock, applied exterior vertical cedar siding and stain, installed really clean door and window trim, insulated large parts of the building, delivered a very substantial level five finish drywall project, and finished it up with a really smooth priming and paint. Most telling of all, I would add that the parts of a project you'll never see were done with incredible integrity - no shortcuts nor corners cut. Daniel's rough carpentry is absolute art, built super solidly, square, and plumb to provide a great foundation for subsequent trades. Skylight flashing and installation exceeded normal best practices and survived this winter's big storms without a single leak. Even the insulation was a beauty to behold, with each stud and joist bay filled perfectly tight with Rockwool and fiberglass. Again, the level of integrity and commitment is just inspiring. I started looking for a general construction firm about a year prior to starting my project (500 SqFoot addition, patio cover, and general house refresh) which is an intimidating process; however, once I found Curt with Sterling I was extremely happy with their transparency and follow through. Every firm I interviewed does things a little different and Sterling is no exception. They will not be the lowest bid nor will they be the highest. They do not have a dedicated in house crew but a collection of sub contractors they have been using for years and trust. I started with an architect that Curt recommended and I must admit at first I wasn't impressed; however, after sharing that with Curt he helped rectify the situation and it turned into a productive relationship. Curt was there every step of the way attending almost every meeting I had with the architect. Throughout this Curt worked tirelessly to get us the best quotes from his various subs as possible. He contacted at least 2 subs on every aspect of the project and while it was a little more expensive than I had hoped I had a good idea of what I was getting into. After we broke ground I was very impressed how Curt was on sight everyday to make sure we continued to on schedule. I decided to live in the house during the construction (not for everyone) and it became my morning routine to meet with curt for 10 minutes get a download of what to expect for the day and what our next steps were. For a type A person like myself I found this extremely reassuring. For the most part everything progressed as planned with the exception of PGE (moving gas meter) which brought us to a dramatic halt for 2 months as they worked through their backlog from the Sonoma fires. So how did we finish up... overall we came over budget (I know everyone is surprised). Part of this was me adding and changing things, part of this was PG&E screwing me, and finally part of it was unexpected expenses during the actual construction. All in all I would recommend everyone assume the standard 10% incremental cost to the final quote (not accounting for fun things you decide to add).
