Eight years ago I came here on a wing tour of the area and liked their food so I put it on my list to come back. It has taken awhile. We arrived on a Saturday night around 6PM and there were three people at the bar. By the time we left around 7PM, there had been at most nine people including us. Either it was an off night or it is a quiet bar. The bartender was friendly, though he accidently forgot to bring our drinks and I had to remind him 15 minutes later. We ordered wings and loaded fries, and food came up relatively quickly. From what I understand, the kitchen guy was new. It showed in the fries, which were cooked but not crispy at all. It was like eating a loaded baked potato... not bad, but not fries. (They took them off the bill- thank you!). The wings were good and varied in size, though of our 10 Buffalo wings only one was a drumstick. I like flats so it was okay with me, but odd. We later ordered 10 more wings and my wife said she liked the Lemon-Pepper seasoning. They have happy hour specials from 5-8 which is nice, though three items were out by the time we arrived. I would have loved to try their maple-bacon wings but they had no maple syrup. In the room next door was a pool table and it might be fun to play sometime if we come back. read more

New owners, new review. There was an everchanging group of friends who would gather weekly, prior to Covid, on a Friday evening at an establishment down the street from the Washington Tavern (better known as WT's to regulars) for a drink or two. Once a year on the Saturday before the St. Patrick's Day parade these friends would shift to WT's for what was known as "corned beef day." With new ownership of WT's it was about time that a call was put out to those friends to reunite. WT's was now the ideal place. Arriving on a Thursday at 4:30 we quickly realized that they didn't open until 5PM. They were kind enough to let us have a seat inside until the bar and kitchen were open and operational. They were not aware of our planned gathering so I will not nitpick about any service. In fact, the bartender who also acted as our server did a miraculous job handling the drinks and separate-check food orders for what grew to about 15 people in the backroom by the kitchen. Kitchen staff also did a wonderful job of getting the food out in a respectable time for our unexpected gathering at the start of their day. All the food I saw coming to our table looked inviting - wings; smashburgers; flatbreads; and someone's salad. I had a pint of Guinness with a Southern Smash burger ($16). There was plenty of flavor and a mix of textures as I took my first bite into the soft roll surrounding the smashed beef patty, a crunchy onion ring, fresh leaf lettuce, sliced tomato, American cheese, and a sweet BBQ sauce. Even the pickle spear on the side was tasty. A true surprise was what I believe were house-made potato chips - so crunchy with an herbed dusting that escapes me but helps to make them addictive. I had a great experience here! This bar has been around for decades. My father remembers coming here. My sister came here. I came here back in college, and they are still going and moving with the times. The bartender during my visit, Chris, was fantastic. I had a few awesome specialty cocktails during my visit and the service was even better. We had been out on the town and decided to order some snacks. I had no expectations, but easy to say they were blown away. The loaded fries were delish and finished with this insane pesto sauce that I fell in love with, the buffalo chicken dip was perfect and the thick cut chips were the perfect vehicle to shovel it in my face. We then got the Mac and cheese bites and they didn't even last long enough for a photo. They were house made and probably the best Mac and cheese bites I ever had, served with a pesto dipping sauce. I haven't been back to WT's in a long time. I remembered it as a dingy college bar and was pleasantly surprised to see the renovations they've made to create a clean and inviting space. I came in to attend a Burlesque Bingo event and started at the bar with a dirty martini. The cocktail was well-made and exactly what I wanted. My partner and I shared an order of their maple bacon wings, and I also had fries and a side Caesar salad. The wings were deliciously sweet with a touch of savory, the salad was well-dressed, and the fries were hot, crispy, and delicious. They're back!!! Now owners and management. Great to be back at thia popular watering hole, tavern and restaurant. It looks updates and very comfortable. I remember many days and evenings coming here years ago. A nostalgic place for many people in a college area. The menu looks fantastic, many apps, entrees, smash burgers and sandwiches. I really was in the mood for a burger so ordered the little piggy. It was a great burger but don't think they asked me how I wanted it cooked hmmmm. It came with a side coleslaw and chips. I enjoyed it. My friend had the cobb salad and liked it. She said it had goddess sauce on it. It was nice to meet Dan who is running the place and getting the menu and things going. Oh T's, the chokehold you have on my friends and I. We are college students and always end our nights at Washington Tavern. However, last night wasn't a great experience. Not due to the music, or ambiance, nor am I complaining about the food this time because I'll have to make another review for that. It is a 50/50 shot whether you'll receive your food in a timely manner. I'm here today to talk about a barback who I've seen a couple times, yet have never been so displeased with customer service as last night. To describe him, he is on the shorter side and usually wears a bandana. My friends ordered drinks at the bar and he immediately had an attitude, asking "what do you guys want? what do you guys want?" and gestured his hands to rush them when they had just gotten to the bar. Some of them tipped and others did not, and he had the audacity to say "thank you for tipping the bartender" to one of them and gave her and not the others a green tea shot to prove a point. I then ordered a passion fruit margarita and he repeated back to me, "passion fruit?" with a weird look on his face and finishes it off by saying "its a dollar more for the syrup" as if I didn't already know that and couldn't afford it. I understand having a long day at work but that does not mean you are rude to customers. I found the whole experience disrespectful and unsettling. read more

They allow (a selective few) underage girls in, some of their staff are rude to patrons, security is aggressive with pat downs and they all enable each other's shitty behavior toward patrons. I don't feel safe and it seems theres a racially motivated protocol when kicking people of color out. read more

Okay, here's a review with some positives and some negatives. First of all, 4 of us came here because we used to come here back in the day and wanted to try it out under the new ownership. We are all in our 50's with disposable income (the people you want coming to spend $$). First impression was the cleanliness of the place. The new owners did a magnificent job on the remodel. So the initial reaction was positive. Next, the bartender, can't recall his name, was very friendly but took way too long to come to end of the bar where we were to serve us. There were probably 6-8 people there so we weren't hard to see. We gave him a pass on this. Ordered smash burger, flatbread and falafel app. Food didn't blow us away but what do you expect for pub fare. It was good, will try the entrees next time. The biggest issue we had was with the bartender. Although he was very nice, he had a hooded sweatshirt on and tended the bar with his hood up. Come on man, looks unprofessional. Owner was on site and had to come to our end of the bar to help us as the bartender was busy talking to friends. After we finished our first round and food he asked if we wanted the check. Um no, we would like another round. This happened 3 times until I asked if he was trying to get rid of us. Anyway, final thoughts. Excellent redo on the place and the food was good. Although the bartender was nice, he needs some work. 1) don't forget the people at the bar, especially when slow. 2) LEAVE THE HOOD OFF YOUR HEAD. 3) Never ask a patron if they want the check. Disappointed tonight-been here a few times. Ok it's wing night but not crazy busy- it took an hour to get 10 wings and beer pretzels. And wings were supposed to be garlic and buffalo but the tasted like curry to boot The were barely warm as they must have been sitting out. Beers ok missing a few. I don't order Irish beer here because despite the fact I'm a harp lover I've never had a good pint here they don't seem to clean the lines. No wifi folks. The Ruben and fries were good and hot- but again very long time to be served- no apologies. Shepherds pie too much potato very little meat. The sirloin mashed and spinach was nicely done. I see why people love the wings at WT - they are huge and meaty. But for me, it was like and not love. Perhaps if I were younger, I would be more into this place. Especially given their very reasonable specials. Instead, I came with the whole family, including the infant little miss Daniel B. and young master Daniel B. Plus two friends from the West Coast who swear they cannot get decent wings in Northern California. My friends were very happy. These wings more than scratched their itch. We got 10 hot and 10 medium, both crispy. The mediums had no heat, they may just have well been called mild. I found them to be a touch sweet. The hot was piquant, but did not require any quenching. My California friends were nonplussed by the viscosity of the hot's sauce, finding it a bit gravy-like. Noting their preference, I decided not to take them to Elbo Room, and instead try a visit to Graney's later in the visit. Ultimately, it's good stuff. It's a college bar, so if it's not your scene, feel free to skip it, and know that you are not missing out on wing Nirvana. That said, it's pretty easy to go in off times and avoid the students. Absolutely terrible. First of all, the service was terrible. Our waitress was extremely rude, she blamed my boyfriend for not telling her something extra on his order, but he did attempt to beforehand but she walked away and didn't look back. In general she was very nasty. It was more than 2 hours before anyone got any food, and of course I was the last to get my food. You know what I ordered? A salad. It took me 2 hours and some change to get a salad. By the time I received my food, everyone was done and getting ready to leave, so not even 10 minutes after getting my food I had to get a to-go box. The food itself...was awful. My boyfriend's tortellini was dry and flavor less, my friends burger was severely overcooked and her mom's fries were cold when she got them. The chicken in my salad was extremely rubbery. This place is really, really bad and I don't recommend it to anyone. I won't be returning. read more

I came here for $1 beer Tuesday and my interaction with the bouncer had me so annoyed. We came at 10pm and the line was extremely long (as expected). Well, we waited on line for a good 45 min because my friends were persistent on getting in and right when it was our turn to go in the bouncer let like 10 people cut us in line. I don't know if it's because he knew them personally (which looked like he didn't), he wasn't paying attention, or maybe because we were Hispanic. I called him out on it because my friends didn't have the heart to confront him & he's like, "fine, go. You're either going to go in or you're not." So even though I was able to get inside, he made my friends still wait in line which defeated the purpose. Also, as I was sitting at the bar, the bartender made a snarky comment towards another patron because he didn't leave a good tip. Wtf? Haven't been back on Tuesdays since. Below is the account of what happened on the evening of 5/30/2017 at The Washington Tavern. I was standing near the edge of the bar where the small pathway for the bartenders to get through would be. When the bartender was leaving, and rounding that corner to go get things to stock the bar he yelled at me for being in his way and pushed me out of the way and said not to be there again. I did my best to cram myself on the edge of that corner as out of the way as I could be. When the bartender came back around the corner he shoved me out of the way again spilling my drink on myself and those around me. I yelled back "What the **** man!". He started yelling back saying that I needed to leave and continued to yell back, "What did I do". Which was what I continued to ask for the next sequence of events. What happened next was fast but as I can best describe it, I was picked up, shoved repeatedly until eventually being pushed out the front door to the pavement. At this point I stood up and continued to ask the bouncer what I had done and he said "the bartender said you needed to leave". I continued to ask him what I had done that justified this. He told me I was going to need to leave the property otherwise he was going to call the police. I told him he could go ahead; I hadn't done anything. He then began to get aggressive and yelling in my face until he eventually pushed me, I went to push him back, at which point he began punching me until I fell to the ground. As I laid there in fetal position he continued to throw punches. I eventually got dragged back up by someone walking by. I realized now that not only was my head throbbing and scuffed up but also my glasses had been broken. Lens had been knocked right out. I contacted the police last night as this was happening and they arrived on the scene only to take down my information and then promptly encourage me to leave and go home. After attempting to contact the bar this morning I was told that the bar owner was 'out of town' for the rest of the week, which seemed like a very strange coincidence. There was oddly no police report filed after contacting the Albany Police Department and attempting to obtain an account of the incident. After being transferred several times I was eventually instructed to contact the Albany City Court, who informed me that they had no details surrounding the incident and that I would need to contact the Albany Police Department to obtain transcript of the evening. I gave up. I know alcohol can impair judgement, and maybe I did or said something that triggered them to react the way they did, as unjustified as it may be. But I also now know what it feels like to be beaten to the ground until a random stranger pulls the man off you, and let me tell you...it's not a good feeling. After talking with many friends and coworkers, it turns out I'm not the only one with a story like this. Do yourself a favor and bring your business somewhere where aggressive men won't bully and beat their patrons into submission. read more

Another college bar, right smack in the middle of the downtown albany alumni quad, along with st rose, and the 'college ghetto'... so be warned! With that being said, WT's has some awesome wings and cheap prices. I went with a friend on a wed night or whenever the special was and we had four beers and a dozen wings for under 15$!! You CANNOT beat that! Plus they were really good too, not just some slop stuff you would expect from a bar. Each night has a diff special going on usually. Tuesday nights get crazy here along with the weekends that are packed with the college-goers. They have cheap prices and even though they have two rooms, plus the outside 'patio' area, it gets packed in here fairly quickly. If you live nearby its a cool spot to stop into, and some nights you can literally drink to obliteration for under 20$. Mixed crowd of chill ppl and the trendier, cough slut, crowd and fratty boys. Washington Tavern probably has the worst lines of all time. You'll probably spend more time in line trying to get in on dollar beer night than you will waiting for the Kingda Ka at six flags. I've been on line for almost two and a half hours and moved maybe fifteen feet. Whereas there are people who I've seen cut the line and gotten in after waiting 15 minutes. There is no structure for the line. People are giving hugs and sliding in. It sucks to see people get in but not see the line move. As I'm writing this, I realized that it takes about 2hrs for me to get from here to NYC. Really really good food. I've tried their dinners and apps and everything has been delicious. Surprisingly good chicken wings and the pizza roll ups are so yumm. Not my choice for a bar hang out, but the food is definitely worth it. Apps are half price during happy hour, which is a good deal even after 7 pm. Only thing that's confusing is the bar and the dining room are billed separately, so if you start a tab at the bar, you can't continue it at your table which is kind of inconvenient. read more

I'll admit it. I graduated from Suny Albany in 1994 and never looked back at the slum city of Smallbany....until I recently found myself road-tripping to see my new favorite band. A mid-afternoon pregame stop at WT's and a walk around the old "hood (and it really is the student ghetto) was de rigeur. Ahhh, WT's, you still smell the same, your wings are delicious, your beer is cold and your tavern fries are heaven. Add gravy and their fake melty cheese for poor man's poutine. Yes, folks Sean and Mr. Harris worked there when I was in undergrad. And I like the fancy new facade. I thought for a very brief moment that I was walking into a classy place but it's the same old pub I knew and loved and kept in business. read more

I'm going to come out straight. I have a big old crush. I am in love with the Lake Placid Ubu Ale. It's dark, but not too dark, just a little sultry and leaves a bit of a tingle on the back of your tongue. I ventured to the Washington Tavern for a happy hour and it being my first Friday night in Albany, I was thrilled to see my beloved! AND for only 4 bucks!* Happy hours with craft beers make Mindy a happy person. As far as all of their other selections, their domestics were only $2.50 or so. Their bartenders were pleasant, even as the crowd grew bigger and rowdier. Their front garden was small, but cute. The only downside - so much farther up Western Ave than I wish it were! *Of course, I am from the City. And of course, craft ales, even from upstate are going to be expensive in the city. But that knowledge didn't deter my absolute joy at seeing Ubu and paying less than half what I'd pay at a bar in the big NYC. 3.5 solid stars. haven't been on a real weekend, so this is a cautiously favorable early review. read more

I gave this place 5 stars because it has been like a second home to me since I turned 21 in Albany. I don't visit as often as I used to when I was still attending UAlbany, but I still enjoy going. WT's is your quintessential Irish pub by day, and "college" bar by night. Lets start with daytime WT's. During the day, it's usually pretty empty which is nice if you're just looking to grab some food. In the summer, sitting out on the front patio is pretty nice. The food is actually very very good for pub food. Their sweet potato fries are amazing, and the burgers and wings are pretty good as well. At night, especially Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays during the college school year, it gets packed full of college kids looking to get hammered and have a good time. The bartenders are cool (especially Mr. Harris who seems like he never leaves that place) but tend to pour the mixed drinks on the weak side. There's a few dart boards which are usually being used (put your quarters up) and a jukebox that contsantly has people pumping money into it (Tip: If you're trying to play a song, spring for the extra $.50 or $1 and "Play It Now". Otherwise your song will probably be played sometime around sunrise the following morning). Happy Hour is Friday 5-9 with some cheap beer specials The one problem I have though is despite all the renovations this place has gone through the past few years, they still have the same crappy tube TV's. This WOULD be a great place to watch the game, but the TV situation is really really poor. Other than that, I'm a big fan of T's. read more

I met a friend for a post-work drink here last night, marking my first time here. I tend to avoid most of the bars near St. Rose and the downtown SUNY Albany campus mainly because they're usually not my scene. I'm out of college and don't usually want to hang in overtly college-seeming bars. I know it;s a little snobby of me. Still, WT's was nicer inside than I expected. It was karaoke night, but luckily there's a spacious area in the back where you can sit and actually have an audible conversation. I suspect I'd like this place a lot better earlier in the evening or afternoon than late at night. I wasn't hungry, but the menu looked a little better than the fare at most pubs. If I ever come back, I'll give the food a shot. The major thing that impressed me about this place - and the main reason I'd come back - is that they have gluten-free beer in stock. I was able to finally go out to a bar and have a "beer" (aka a bottle of Anheuser-Busch's RedBridge, which is made with sorghum.) Not that wine, liquor and hard cider aren't good, but ... it's the principle of the matter. read more

My friends and I have been coming here for trivia since our friends started hosting a few months ago. We weren't thrilled about service but got better as we kept coming. We had a regular server who must have been a student who already went home. We missed him horribly tonight. First it was overcrowded I guess cause schools out. We didn't have anywhere to sit. We managed to get a patio table brought inside so we could eat and play. We eventually got menus. The girl who's usually hear but not typically waitstaff as we could tell took our order. I ordered a burger first along with the other 4 people at our table. Two rounds of food came out no burger. Brought two sets of silverware, then two more, umm burger please? She asked me what I ordered and it wasn't put in. I cancelled on principal. Ordered another beer. After a minute realized I did want food ordered fries, told me already put in on the house, only reason for two over one star. Still no beer after got fries. Asked again was told put in. 15 minutes or so later I asked for a water got that with beer finally. Extremely frustrating. Then when check came after I got two rounds(happy hour 2 for 1), there was three on the bill and 20 minutes later when she came back she looked at us like we were lying about the beers I got. I'm never spending another $1 in this shit hole. I will still come for trivia with my friends, but refuse to give my money to such horrible service. So my teammates can use gift cards we rarely win how they like. read more

Stopped into Washington Tavern for a quick bite. Burgers were good and the tavern offers a lot of options for toppings and seasonings including pancetta and capicolla which seemed odd for a place going with the Irish theme. Fries were cooked to perfection and the wait staff was friendly and attentive. The place was oddly decorated and the tables were kind of plain but there was some nice outdoor seating for nice days. Prices were good and they have several beers on tap. From what I hear this gets crowded at night with the local college kids. Street parking in front. read more

Typical college bar with all the divey aspects you want: jukebox, punching machine, a handful of tvs and decent drink specials. If you go during the week before the rush you get to actual know the bartenders which is nice but they never buy you a drink. There isn't much competition for UA or St.Rose students so I guess they feel they don't need to buy you a drink but if I come to the bar twice a week for over a year I'd like you to buy me a beer every once and a while. More of an upperclassmen crowd, it did get crowded, I mean, come on, it was a college bar. Nice fresh taps, and the kicker, pretty good bar food. I went to SUNY Albany for undergrad and then grad school and I became a frequent visitor to WT's. My fellow grad friends (we were teachers in training) would hit up the bar as soon as our school days ended for happy hour. It was a great time for us to vent and catch up. WT's always made room for our large group(ranged from 10-15 people). Great happy hour from what I remember. We used to get pizzas(AWESOME), wings, and pitchers to split. Sigh. What do you do when you're inconceivably bored at work and have to pretend to look like you're furiously typing something up? Why, you just dally on over to the land of nostalgia and write up a yelp review for your favorite college bar that you haven't visited for, oh, close to a year now. Well, despite the delay and inherent associated deficiencies with it, I've enough experience with the place to at least rationalize some sort of relevance. Perhaps not, but humor me and my trip down memory lane will ya? WT's was, as far as I'm concerned, quintessentially SUNY. I always felt that turning 21 merited an inaugural visit here for a free bottle of champagne and just a general celebration of not having to suffer through Chubbies, The Post, or whatever it is nowadays that accept Subway Club Cards as valid IDs. The aspect I laud about Washington Tavern is the clientele it attracts/attracted. As I said, mostly SUNY kids, but the elitist in me wants to say SUNY to a higher caliber. The dudes who lived on over crowded, under aged, peeing at the bar mentality, even after turning 21, still aren't likely come to WT's. Hell, I've had friends like that who didn't like the place because "it was too well-lighted", i.e, "I can see the cellulite on that skank biddy that I would normally hit on at Chubbies." Those types would be more apt to move on to the clubs on Pearl, or continue their primitive adventures at underaged bars. To be perfectly honest, even compared to the great dive bars in NYC, I still wouldn't mind hanging out at WTs. Great prices, plenty of space, outdoor seating, and probably some of the best wings I've ever had, I don't think I can be faulted for being so stricken by nostalgia. Sure, I'll concede it's not going to be as hip as a place like Bombers or something downtown. The jukebox is still going to be predominantly stuck on Journey and Billy Joel and putting a Pixies song on will be met with jeers, but when you're having a good enough time with pals at Washington Tavern, then you'll find that you somehow know all the words to "Don't Stop Beleiving" too. read more

eating here was probably my worse dinning experience in albany. upon seating we were told our food would be a while because there were only a few cooks in the back. my table and I were confused because we hadn't ordered yet but it was nice to be warned a head of time. the only good thing that came from this visit was the quickness of the kitchen despite being short and the most likely pre package frozen mozzarella sticks. I ordered the Old fashioned Steak,rare, what I received was far from pink. It resembled a rehydrated piece of beef jerky. the white wine garlic butter sauce wasn't added to my meal. my friend ordered the penne a la vodka which looked dryer than sand. If I didn't see it come from the kitchen I would have assumed someone left it on the counter over night. another friend ordered the mac & cheese, let's just say box mac n cheese has a higher ranking. read more

At first I was skeptical as to the food quality because of the crowd it attracts. However I should never judge a book by its cover because I was so pleased with what I ordered. First off their beer selection was very good so that is always a plus. What was even more satisfying were the wings. They certainly lived up to there hype along with the delicious blue cheese. I am pretty sure the blue cheese is made in house. Overall I will definitely be coming here again and recommend this place to anyone in the area. read more

I'd heard that WT's was a good spot for beer and wings from some of my co-workers who are relatively recent college grads so I was forewarned about the college atmosphere of.you go before 9ish. About a week later a couple visiting the area asked for a recommendation for a late lunch and he was particularly interested in getting a beer as well. I work in Troy so I recommended Brown's (which I love,) but I remembered the high praise for WT's and they were staying in Albany so I sent them there. The next day the guy called me and said "hands down the best wings ever!" So after work that day, I had to try it myself. My wife wasn't so hungry but I was starved. So I ordered the Tuscan panini with chicken figuring we could share that and the wings. The food came out and the wings were definitely the best I've had in the capital district. In fact they are among the best I've ever had. The Tuscan panini was great too but the wings were pretty close to perfection! A couple of weeks later we took our college aged daughters to WT's. They ordered fish and chips and a turkey sandwich. Wife and I split wings and Tuscan panini again. Our food came out and the turkey sandwich and fish n chips got good marks but and free tasting a wing each of them lost interest I their meals. We ended up carrying theirs out and ordering more wings for them. I've been back since then and will be back again soon/often! Best wings I've had in Albany. The Friday $10 bucks for 10 wings & a pitcher of beer is so quality. Along w/ the great service and half off apps it's a must go for all around the area. Who woulda thought the bar a lot of us college students go to Thursday & Friday nights have such quality food? read more

Beware, Thursday through Friday is college bar night. Overcrowded and deafening loud music. I've never been on a weekday nor have I eaten Tavern food, so i'm judging this establishment solely on it's prime time night life. Negatives: If you think you're going to the bathroom or sitting in an actual seat your sadly mistaken. A few positives, they have cheap drinks and surprisingly responsive bartenders. Wish I could give this bar one star. Bouncers are assholes that don't let you back in when you go grab your credit card from your house. Music isn't too good, would have to say it's the worst part of my college experience. The bouncers here act like they're working for a high class bar in NYC. Drinks sucks too. The BEST wings. We tried boneless and traditional wings, both were fantastic. The perfect amount of crisp and great flavor. Service was great as well, the cook told us to come back for smoked wings on Thursdays. We'll be there! read more

The wings are still great, but not quite as good as I remember. It also didn't seem like much of a college bar anymore - which may or may not be a good thing. Great pub atmosphere. Good food. Good beer. read more
